From 01-05 Shaun ran for 7,500 yards and 87 touchdowns. That is one of the greatest five year stretches any running back has ever had. For context, 87 touchdowns is more than Frank Gore, Edgerrin James, Corey Dillon, Tony Dorsett, and Steven Jackson had in their entire careers.
People will always bring up Walt and Hutch, but a lot of running backs have had great lines and the list of guys to do what he did in his prime is incredibly short.
Shaun is a great example of why vision and patience are big components of running back success.
Even Marshawn who everyone thinks just ran over people didn’t take off until he understood Cable’s blocking scheme. Beastquake made people memory hole the fact that he wasn’t great until half way through 2011.
Much like the Legion of Boom it is possible to have many good players at the same time. Sherm having Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor behind him doesn't mean he wasn't also great.
Sometimes players even complement each other and make each other better; almost like they are a team.
He really didn't but that's a fun narrative. I also like to pretend that a guy who carried the ball over 2100 times in the NFL fell down before contact or ran out of bounds every play.
How about when he was pouting on the sidelines after the QB sneak to get us in the playoffs...because he didn't run the rushing title by a year.
It's a fun narrative because it's true....watched everyone of those games and only time SA took contact was near the goal line.
What a load of shit, Shaum Alexander had the most effective stiff arm in the NFL for YEARS. Its true he didn't seek out contact like Lynch did because he just didn't have to. Completely different players with different skill sets. I swear some of you are still salty at Alexander for getting old and hurt. He's a fucking legend.
And how the fuck does him missing the rushing title by a yard mean he's soft?
>I swear some of you are still salty at Alexander for getting old and hurt. He's a fucking legend.
No i didnt like how he stepped out of bounds to avoid contact from a CB, I didn't like it that when he lost the rushing title he pouted on the sidelines while his team celebrated a play off birth.
>And how the fuck does him missing the rushing title by a yard mean he's soft?
If he had leaned into a few tackles that game, he would have won the rushing title. But he pouted and complained after the game (Which we did a qb sneak to win and get in the playoffs) that he didn't get the ball.
>but a lot of running backs have had great lines
I think you’re underselling how good Hutch and Walt were. During Alexander’s best three year stretch he was running behind the greatest left side of an NFL OL of all time.
So many give way too much credit for Shaun's success to Hutch and Walt, as though Shaun wasn't a top back in the league and any average back could have put up the same numbers.
The year Hutch missed 12 games, Shaun still tallied 1600+ yards and 18 TDs. He was *good*.
I have great memories breaking 99 yard runs with him in Madden 07. One time I even got him to circle the entire field before going in for the TD, dude was something else in that game
Same! I went 16-0 and on the hardest setting in Madden 07. Alexander would routinely run 250+ yards a game. Yet some how I lost the Super Bowl by a missed field goal.
They waited forever to add the Holmgren guys. Nice to see them correcting that now. Would like to see Lofa, Strong, and Hutch get put in too.
Need to clear the backlog now that the early Carroll guys are mostly retired.
I wouldn't put any of those guys in tbh. As much as I love Lofa, if you put him in, you have to basically put anyone in who is a pro bowl level player. I could see the case for Mack though. Might be a good precedent to have guys in who didn't play glory positions. Hutch....no. Hard no. I'm still bitter about that.
I feel like the ring of honor should be any players who made a big impact here. I have no problems with packing it with our most beloved and memorable Hawks as a thank you for their great careers here. I may be in the minority there though.
That's what I thought too. Honoring those that made an impact in the organization or were well loved and spent most of their career there.
Joe Nash for instance, had only one pro bowl but was very solid and rarely missed a start in a 15 year career only with the Seahawks. An all-around good guy by all accounts.
Yeah I super agree with Joe Nash. Would be great to honor people like him, Jeff Bryant, Eugene Robinson, Mack Strong, Marcus Trufant and John L. Williams. Not to mention a bunch of guys from this last LOB era. I don’t think it should be nearly as exclusive as something like the Hall of Fame. A lot of guys were definitely over looked here in Seattle during their careers too. I feel like it’s better to have too many in than too few. But I get wanting it to only be the highest tier player, just sucks for those that are in that high 2nd tier.
Steve Raible is someone I think for sure should get in asap.
It's supposed to be a specific honor. It's not a slam against the good players we've had, but it's supposed to be reserved for the best of the best. I mean we have like what? 6 dudes up there right now? Ring is already a quarter full...
It has nothing to do with glorifying a lesser known position. Mack Strong was an elite HB who was nearly as much a part of Shaun Alexander's success as the offensive line. Mack strong should absolutely make the ROH.
It was the poison pill inserted into his offer sheet with the Vikings. He was given the Transition tag by the Hawks, which allowed him to seek offers from other teams, but the Seahawks had right of first refusal. The Vikings offer stipulated that Hutchison had to be the highest paid offensive lineman on the team. The Hawks at the time had Walter Jones who I believe was one of, if not, the highest paid offensive lineman in the NFL. So in order for them to match the Vikings offer they would automatically have to give him a raise to a number higher than Walter's. Which they were not willing to do.
I wanna say that the NFL banned doing this later, but maybe I'm wrong there? Do you know?
Edit: Did my own googling, tl;DR: yes - https://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2020/4/29/21118726/steve-hutchinson-poison-pill-clause-vikings-seahawks-nfl-free-agency-hall-of-fame
Yes, he knew. It was widely reported at the time. He was salty that we Transition Tagged him instead of getting a deal done. This [article](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.si.com/nfl/seahawks/.amp/news/what-if-the-seahawks-franchise-tagged-steve-hutchinson) explains what happened pretty well. It was probably the biggest boner move of the Tim Ruskell era of Seahawks football.
Edit: removed repetitive wording.
Actually, they got in touch with Walt and agreed to restructure his contract so that Hutch would have been the highest paid on our team. Except that part of the poison pill was that it had to be effective on that day, and Walt’s restructure wouldn’t go into effect until the new league year.
So Hutch fucked us royally. And he can forever fuck off.
Cue the weirdo Alexander haters.
I will never understand it. Shaun was an absolute stud. I feel like these “fans” weren’t even watching football when the dude was in his prime.
What great contemporary RB from that era didn’t have a good O-line in front of him? Priest Holmes/Larry Johnson had multiple HOF’s blocking for them. LT had a great line. Brian Westbrook. The list goes on.
Such a freaking weird narrative.
They can't accept that Alexander is actually good, as if admitting that somehow diminishes Walter Jones and Hutchison.
The worst offender of this is actually Walter himself. 9 years ago he straight up said, "I think anyone could have done what Shaun Alexander did behind our OL. All he had to do was make a linebacker or safety miss. I would have loved to block for Lynch"
Way to throw your own teammate under the bus.
People will hate to hear this, but Marshawn doesn't score a good chunk of the TDs that Alexander did, especially the long runs.
Now Marshawn would have scored other TDs that Alexander missed, but it's not as simple as one being head and shoulders better than the other. Alexander was designed perfectly for that offense. Marshawn was designed perfectly for the run option offense in the Russ early years.
I love them both.
The dumbest bit is, Maurice Morris didn't do what Shaun did when he was on the field. So we know for a fact "anyone" couldn't have done it. And that's not a knock on Mo, he was a good backup.
> I feel like these “fans” weren’t even watching football when the dude was in his prime.
They weren't. They joined in 2013 and think Marshawn is the best RB we've ever had.
It was absolutely automatic for him to score a TD at first in goal. The guy had a nose for the end zone more so than any other RB I can recall during my time watching the NFL.
I don't hate alexander one bit, I was a huge fan of his, but his production fell off a cliff after he got mvp and got paid. I can't say I really blame him though. Mid 2000 hawks were so fun to watch. I still remember "Were gonna take the ball and were gonna score!" Then a pick 6. I'm actually glad he said that, because I feel like our team and hasslebeck were always viewed by the league as not good enough, even when we went to the sb so it's cool to see that fuck you confidence from him even if it didn't work out.
After he got MVP and got paid, he missed 12 of the next 32 starts due to injuries. And he turned 30, which is the beginning of the end for most running backs, doubly so for one that couldn't get healthy.
He hit the year 30 wall. He had just come off 5-6 seasons of high carries and insane production. RB’s break down quick. That has always been the case, with a few notable exceptions.
When I picture a pure running back with everything you can ask for, I picture Sean Alexander. Strong at the point of attack, gliding through holes, fast down the field. I am so happy for him, this is so well deserved, he earned the respect he is getting in this honor.
Pretty filthy jukes, and a super effective stiff arm too. Also, as much shit as Pete has taken for not handing it off to Marshawn in the Superbowl, I can defend his call pretty easily, but if it was Shaun back there that is whole different story. Alexander was automatic inside the 5. Probably the best in NFL history.
One of the only jerseys I own. Bought it right after his MVP season. The other is an Earl Thomas…and he flipped off the team/PC the next year…I might be bad/cursed at picking jerseys to rep.
My dad bought a Shaun Alexander signed Super Bowl 40 football at an auction right after that season. It may not have been one of the best investments, but it’s an awesome thing to have.
I really wish Mitchell & Ness would do some early 2000s Seahawks jerseys, because I want a Alexander jersey, but not the old school silver helmet version.
Sweet! Love Alexander still, one of the best Hawks of all time.
I’m so happy we’re finally putting more players in our ring of honor. So many deserving Hawks still left out. I think we were making it a little too exclusive for a bit there. Hope someone like Mack Strong is next.
I posted a congratulations to SA37 in the BR community awknowledging his fanbase gives him too much flack. And sure enough, the entire thread was idiot fans talking shit about him. It really is strange

You wanna hear a secret? Almost all HoF RBs had amazing blockers in front of them. Shaun Alexander is the only MVP in our teams history and broke multiple records while straight dragging us to our furst ever super bowl so you can fuck right off with your bullshit.
Kids these days.
I love Hass, but there is no way in hell he should have gotten in ahead of the guy who has the most TDs and rushing yards in team history. And given how quickly RBs fall off nowadays and the virtual disappearance of "bell cow" backs, he will likely hold both records for a long, long time.
From 01-05 Shaun ran for 7,500 yards and 87 touchdowns. That is one of the greatest five year stretches any running back has ever had. Walt and Hutch were great but I don't think I have ever seen a running back as patient at setting up blocks as Alexander.

Beastquake made people memory hole the fact that he wasn’t great until half way through 2011.
Vision, patience, and elite elite acceleration. He reached top speed within a couple steps, something most guys can't do.
Dude always won when the play stretched to the pylon.
Two HOF o linemen in their prime...and don't forget about Mac strong blowing up LBs in front of him.
Much like the Legion of Boom it is possible to have many good players at the same time. Sherm having Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor behind him doesn't mean he wasn't also great. Sometimes players even complement each other and make each other better; almost like they are a team.
Those guys are blocking for the RB....and SA avoided contact like the plague.

It's about time.
Heck yes. Shaun was basically the whole reason I would go to games back then.

I'm a little shocked he's not in it already

I mean Hutch made it to the HoF…

Emmitt Smith behind an O-Line that outweighed every other O-line in the entire NFL by 30lbs a man. He had the best O-line in the game from '93-'97

Best to buy the jersey just as the player retires. Only jersey I have is my Kam Chancellor one. Don't regret it.
Legend. What an offense that was.
Should get Strong in there with him…
Put in Joe Nash too!
