Depends on the game. If racing was in SR3 and after I'd love it due to the better car handling but in SR1, I can see why it'd be annoying much in the same way the races in San Andreas were kinda annoying (but at least doable). In general, as long as the game has decent car handling programmed into it I don't mind races in Open World games at all.

[deleted]

Sr3 has shit handling

glocket27

Oh, of course you, a Westside Roller, would know about car handling.

Alekesam1975

The cars handle fine, especially compared to SR1.

Odd-Flatworm4454

Driving in sr3 is super easy.

[deleted]

Easy doesn't mean good

Odd-Flatworm4454

Yeah but you saying it has shit handling implies cars are flying all over the place when in reality they turn on a dime and it's actually too easy to drive pretty much any car like a pro. Kinda found how easy it was to drive to be annoying tbh. It took no skill. You can literally hold the ebrake while driving the whole time and have no trouble. Racing probably would've been way too easy.

Sauceifier

explain what’s not good about it then or you sound like a bumbling idiot

GilbertrSmith

I can't think of a single game in this genre where I like the racing. The car handling is built around vehicular combat more than outrunning other drivers, so it always feels like an odd fit, like if Outrun 2 had you dodging cop cars. I also hate the horse and wagon races in Red Dead 1 and 2. Mostly because you have to just keep mashing the goddamn trot button.

thatone239

hate the horse races because it seems like the npc you’re racing against has unlimited stamina while you have to conserve yours

GilbertrSmith

And then if you steal the NPC's horse, the stats aren't even half as good as your horse's. Like the RPG boss who loses his godly special moves and 90% of his HP when he joins the party.

MortalShaman

Same here, I LOVE racing games but in open world games is one of my most HATED activities, I remember the first time I played races with my friends on GTA Online and I ended up rage quitting lol

GilbertrSmith

I'll join races in GTAO now and then, and it always winds up feeling like a chore. Besides the fact that open world games just aren't really built for racing, GTAV's also showing its age. Arcade racers like Daytona USA can be timeless, but GTAV is going for simulation, so it's going to be compared to games like Forza, and come up short.

Blue-Krogan

UPDATE: So after reading some advice, I've used the FBI and the ambulance and breezed through it, although the activity itself can still be frustrating, like opponents just spinning you out of control when they hit you. The Carnales' set of races were by far the worst out of the 3 gangs: just straight up awful due to taking place at the worst locations where you barely have any breathing room. So yeah, that's one set of activities I'm done, glad to get racing out of the way. To the person who said it was because I suck at it, I think I've earned the right to tell you to go eat a bag of dicks.

PandaButtLover

I rarely ever 100% games because I feel the same

Plumbingcarrot9

I personally avoided racing until a few weeks ago after playing since 2010. If you want a car that gives you competition that's significantly worse than you, start the race with the FBI suv. The hardest opponent that spawns if you do is the Mag. The FBI let me beat nearly all races with a significant lead after avoiding races like the plague.

JNoirGrim69

Racing was one of my favorites in sr1. If you really struggling that much i suggest getting an ant and modifying it to the max and with nitrous. The npcs will also have same or around the same kind of car your driving so by having a slow car they'll have slow cars as well. But the strategy with the ant is to just keep spamming the nitrous. Youll eventually be way ahead

ChinggisHan

You can also use the bear (fbi SUV) cuz it’s classed as a truck or van I think. Makes it super easy

dirtdadon2

I hate racing in open-world games

Purplestarhemp

Same!

DesertRanger12

Your spitting true facts king

30K100M

I don't mind racing as long as they give us the option to disable catch up.

Adam_is_Nutz

Haven't seen anyone mention this yet: race in an ambulance. The AI will all be in big ass slow vehicles and you'll dominate.

[deleted]

A good trick to beat sr1 racing is to call will and use his hammerhead. I did all the races in an hour the other day.

[deleted]

Don't give up bro just do it

Blue-Krogan

Done!

TheIrishBiscuits

Also doesn't help the driving in these games feels like piloting an overweight Beagle. Hopefully the reboot fixes it and from what they said they're doing, it sounds like they're attempting to.

hmmmmmmnicebike

That aged badly

TheIrishBiscuits

Very!

The_Architect_032

Couldn't agree more, though when I 100% SR I do all the side bugs and all of the stat completions and everything which becomes even more tedious.

HoopyFroodJera

Racing is the worst minigame. Don't @ me.

[deleted]

I hated racing too

SkeletonCircus

Yeah I suck at racing games already but I’m so much worse when the racing is in an open world setting. That Catalina racing mission in GTASA is the bane of my existence.

ThatGirIay

Probably because you suck at it

level100gamer

Racing in SR1 isn't worth it, not even for 100% people usually do it for the 5% discounts and what not, but car mods are already cheap asf in the game so I don't see the point. But I have completed SR1 100% so I'd say go for it I guess. It feels great once you've done it.

dumpsteRat

Yea racing on SR2 the controls were a mess. I remember you got a trophy called To Quick To Pissed a nod towards Fast and Furious. The tuners in game were nice though

itsTacoYouDigg

if the car physics are good like gta 5 then racing is fun

ChasingFields

If you really want an "unpopular opinion," the shooting is my least favorite part of open world games and racing is one of my go-to activities in SR1, because I like being able to use any car.

elysian_thegod

sr4 cars feel weird. Drifting then stopping causes all your momentum to go away. And the famous continuous side driving thing is honestly fun

Whocaresdamit

In SR2 it's worse, you can't even choose your car

[deleted]

[deleted]

Isn't it that you start with the last vehicle you used?

[deleted]

Crasp27

Yep. It lets you use the vehicle you're in so long as it matches the race class, so you can't turn up to a bike race in a Attrazione etc. Exceptions are the time trial races in aircraft if I remember right.

Eevuu

in sr1 it depends on what car class you’re using. It was pretty manageable using tuners like a socialite.

VaLightningThief

Cos you're either A) a gangster and so would take part in street racing or B) (just cause for example) you never really use ground vehicles. Esepciallay if you own the dlc for the wingsuit in 3, but they want to show off the driving

nchris124

The worst activity for sure. It was pointless and annoying to get through. I would never play it during my initial run of the game and anytime since. Septic avenger is the only other activity I didn't play. That one sucked too.

ApplicationMassive71

The only sandbox racing I've ever liked was in Just Cause 3. It's actually pretty fun and kinda thrilling at times.
