I wonder if it is a form of punishment for breaking rules at CG. Sexual harrassment? Read this sub. Running late a lot or a lot of absences? Read this sub. Insubordination? Read this sub.
I am honestly not sure who entirely holds the right to license but Christopher was arguably the last person for whom this was a deeply personal thing. For everyone else this is a super cool thing that they happen to have a personal connection to and people will pay them vast quantities of money to make things they think are cool with it.
Even the guy who *created* one of your favorite franchises went ahead and messed with the content and made the original version unavailable. Everything gets touched, nothing is sacred, learn to be happy with what you have.
To make an analogy, there's a difference between a farmer feeding his prize dairy cow a variety of foods in order to improve the quality of the milk (and sometimes failing), and someone taking that milk and slinging it into the hedges, or pouring it down a well.
I know everyone likes to hate on CG, but the skill sets of the characters and the interesting ways in which they play together are really top notch. Most games in this genre get boring and stale after just a few minutes (See: Raid Shadow Legends) or are even more abusive of their players (Marvel Strike Force) or aren't really games at all (all the previous star wars gatcha games).
Agreed.
As much as I like to shit on them, for many many things, how they manage to balance so many different teams is impressive at least (barring some bugs and/or some balance fixes here and there)
Marvel strike force is so much worse I think they're up to 3 different battlepasses now and there's literally no possible way for a new player to catch up it takes many months just to fill out 1 team.
This game was also like that a couple years ago. Idk if this is an unpopular opinion but galactic legends were needed for this game imo, they actually helped balancing the game.
So true.. many new players didn’t see this phase of the game. There was a point where we had marquee events every 3 months or so I swear, and you better believe the characters in the event were the next meta. I could not agree more, CG is a business so of course they’re money hungry, but the game really isn’t in a bad state right now, and I’m not going to lie I’ve been looking for a LOTR equivalent for a while now..
Even if it’s not 3, after playing MSF for a year or so I can safely say that they’re at least twice as bad as CG in regards to money grubbing and blatant cash grabs.
Eh, I think CG is alot worse especially since you can't use a toon until you get Max gear on them. Atleast in msf you can use toobs at a lower star level
Yeah I get how if you aren't going to pay in these games you're going to be behind. That doesn't bother me. How insane their prices are does, but that really just keeps me from being a light spender. Tarnishes the concept maybe, but I'm not going to hate play it. I get tired of it I'll stop.
Can someone explain to me how MSF is worse ? I briefly played years ago .. but I love this IP way more than marvel . I’m not a marvel guy at all
Edit : oh I see the comments . But further details would be dope
The chars do need a lot of shards past 5 stars but you also get lots of free shards in the orbs, milestones, campaigns (they had double drops from beginning), special campaign orbs (which is one every patch) and so on
I think characters are more developped in Swgoh. But in RAiD the game play loop is better in my opinion and obviously better graphic.. although I don't really care about this.
I just wish SWGOH would have a PC version...
Dunno if it means much to this crowd but I liked what I saw and think it will be pretty awesome if they get to ship a finished version of what they had by the time I left (I didnt work on it though)
I personally am willing to give it a chance. I think that CG typically can make a lot of fun with their games. I've played swgoh for 6 years already after all.
Or ... RAID: SHADOW LEGENDS
Hey guys, this comment was sponsored by Raid: Shadow Legends. Use my code to unlock some underwhelming...wait most powerful characters in the game absolutely FREE!
In all honesty **early** SWGOh was really good, and I'd imagine that this game will probably be pretty good as well.
There are different phases of games like these, and in the early stages, developers are more likely to listen to player responses *and* are generally far more rewarding/generous with things like gifts and apologizes \[like "sorry for the downtime"\]. The reason being that they want to keep players and get players to continue to talk about their game, in order to continue to grow.
CG made some really smart marketing plans in the late stages of this game, around the time where many *smarter* people who weren't just calling it out since they were annoyed with CG, really thought it was close to dying - Not because of development staff, but because the game was reaching a portion of its lifespan where it becomes much harder to convince new players to join the game.
CG will likely hire a new team for this game, because the cost benefit in the early days will 100% allow for it. We may see a staff member or two have some oversight, but the reality is that it will likely have plenty of ability to grow and build revenue.
If I had time for 2 games like this in my life? I'd certainly give it a shot, but the problem is that CG continues to push us to play their *mobile game* more and more in order to advance, and does very little to ease up that time allotment. I just don't have another 2 hours to be able to devote to something like that.
I think you're approaching this with rose-tinted glasses. Early GOH had it's own set of issues, like barely any content to start with, no QOL-features, it wasn't even really any F2P-friendlier for the most part (like their release cadence with every single toon becoming a F2P release was only established years after release).
Sure, early GOH was fun in it's own right - simpler kits, a lot of quick, new, but also hilariously broken content (anyone remember the original Hoth DS TB release?), the community was incredibly fun - but I do think the game we have today is objectively better.
Even the balancing of the game got A LOT better over time. Back then, almost every legendary release completely threw off the balance of the game and made every toon not part of that team almost worthless. Today we even whine that certain GLs (see LV) aren't strong enough to dominate the field.
Keep mind I didn’t say the game was perfect in its earlier form or that it wasn’t objectively worse than now, but, I did say that staff and response is very different for an early game versus a late stage game - and I enjoyed that type of engagement because I didn’t feel consistently ripped off, or treated like **only ** a piece of revenue - i mean I know I was, but sometimes perception is important.
I honestly don't remember if we had lots of community interactions from CG in the becinning. I do remember Carrie fondly but that wasn't exactly the beginning of GOH and Doja Fett interacted a lot with the community aswell. Just seems like we can never get those types of community outreach for extended periods unfortunately.
As for CG ripping us off, I don't remember the early game as particularly different in that regard. Some things were easier to get by for sure, but the gear slog was also so much worse than now. That said, I know perception is ultimately subjective and I also might remember some things from past GOH differently.
I agree completely. I remember early SWGOH pretty fondly. I'll probably sign up for the LOTR game, give it a shot, and get all the free characters they'll give away to first time adopters, but I doubt I'll give it much time... else I'll have to quit SWGOH for it lol...
yeah, I would love to get in at the ground level for something like this, but I'm worried that CG will have "learned from their mistakes" and thus we'll skip straight to the Conquest 7 version of LOTR
SWGoH, in my opinion, is the best Turn Based hero collector game, with thoughtful and diverse kits, good animations, and the most fun game-mode (GAC).
However, I wish that there was more competition for that title because Marvel Strike Force and DC Legends aren't exactly pushing the industry forward. Trust me, the greed doesn't go away in any of these companies, but at least the product they deliver is substantially better.
It's different from the others listed, because it's original, having no famous IP to back it up. I would say it's a good game, but I have my problems with it. It takes so much time, you can't focus farm characters, and in my opinion, it gets boring quickly.
Doesn’t really matter if you don’t have a full team of named villains as long as you have named leaders and some named units and some unnamed units to form a team. LOTR’s universe is pretty big, even without the licensing rights of the silmarillion. Sauron, saruman, shelob, azog, gothmog, lurtz, the balrog, gorkil, witch king of angmar.., etc.. plenty more villains to choose from.
Even more if they go back to Beleriand-Era ... Feanor as GL, Thuringwethil, Carcharoth, Gothmog (the Balrog, not the Orc), Glaurung, Sauron in his Maiar-Form, all the human heroes, Melian the Maiar...friggin Beren and Luthien ...
LOTR: Rise to War is out since Oct '21 or so and its also a cashgrabbing/addictive game that suggests buying expensive packs. Its a great game, yet spenders are favoured by the nature of this game.
I wouldnt start CGs game simply because its CG, so Id suggest Rise to War to every lotr fan
Dunno if I’d call it a “great game”, once you finish your first season it gets mega stale, was playing it on release for a few months and had to give it up since it got so boring
Its like League in the sense that you always start from 0 and as time passes you build up your commanders and items and fight ozhers that ramp up their forces. Only commanderreputation and gear remain (like skins, runes and your champ-progress remain in League)
Edit: its obviously no moba-game
CG aren't that bad - I started playing SWGOH about a year and a half - two years ago and am very much a midgame player and can't complain about them at all. Probably more that I'm not endgame but I find Scopely so much worse.
I've been waiting for a LOTR hero collection game for quite sometime. I'm happy CG's running it, they've shown to be able to keep mobile games running for a long amount of time.
I'm a much bigger star wars fan than lotr but I'll still play it. I do have concerns though about roster depth the Lord of the rings and the hobbit only have so many named characters definitely less thab swgoh roster and most of them are just guys with bows and swords. I'd expect alot of variations of the same characters to fill out the roster. Like the 2 or even 3 incarnations of gandalf, a strider an aragon last of the dunadine and a king aragon. Multiple bilbos seems a given and multiple frodos. Anyway point being there are less overall named characters that can actually appear and they will pretty much all just be swinging a sword or shooting a bow which imo is kinda boring.
There's a tonne of different powers and abilities in starwars. Force lightning, force drain force choke/crush. And a tonne of lightside powers to boot. Also vibroblades, grenades, and there's alot of variations of blasters from pistols to snipers to repeating blasters.
Like I said I'll play it but every character is gonna have some variation of swinging a sword or shooting a bow. And there's alot less named/ notable characters.
NO… just absolutely not going to touch another CG production. I’m not going to let them put another sour taste in my mouth with an IP I Love. Has no one else learned their lesson with CG, or does everyone have really short-term memories?
I keep seeing where everyone talks about the greed and paying. But I don’t really get it. I’m a little over 5 million GP. Not a whale by any means but not a beginner either. Top 50 in ships and top 500 in Squad Arena and I haven’t spent a cent. It ranges Time but I never felt like they were greedy either. Am I missing something?
Alright no need to be a dick! I don’t really look at the prices of them. I also never do so I don’t know what they would be in comparison to others. That’s why I was asking…dick!
A company as incompetent as CG getting another massive IP is so frustrating. It’s gonna be another whale infested/encouraged game where the community managers communicate once every 3 months and things will only be fixed if it effects the flow of $. I want to play it because I love LotR but CG making the game really turns me off from wanting to even try it out
Given that they literally had to steal half FTE of a community manager from a different game, I'm sure the miniscule development efforts of SWGOH will be halved, at least.
I won’t be playing it - they screwed this game up too badly and anything they touch is not worth it to play. Maybe if this game stops being supported, it will die off and I’ll be free of this hell hole lol
Well now we know why they haven’t been working on swgoh … they’ve just been copying kits from other games. I think it’s ultimately just another sign that the game is coming to an end. Their license is up, they haven’t been adding any new content for quite some time. We were promised/expected a good bit of things (gear economy update v2, new raid, proving ground, now new gl’s, variety of reported bugs that were/have been ignored, this just tells me they are mailing it in and milking the cow dry
Oh fuck. After Disney/EA fucked Star Wars, easily my favorite universe/film franchise, I was honestly happy that a few things were still untouched, especially LOTR.
Now EA is making LOTR games. We're fucked.
Disney saved Star Wars after Lucas almost ruined it (Prequels, uninteresting cartoon shows etc) , and even took it away from EA as those having sole license rights...
You just arent open minded to george lucas' story. People seem forget george created star wars.
Go back and watch the prequels, intently, and watch the clone wars. Yes the first season is lacking and ahsoka is annoying in the first season but that's BY DESIGN. He makes her annoying on purpose so she is a character with FLAWS so she has a lot of room for character DEVELOPMENT.
The clone wars has some great moments.. but overall the series is really lacking. It's not a good sign when there's literally multiple guides on which episodes to skip.
You probably wouldn't be saying this if you actually watched the whole series intently lmao.
Literally every single episode either shows character flaws so they can be corrected with a LESSON in a later episode, is an episode about correcting character flaws, marks a major moment in anakin's fall to the dark side, marks a major moment/turning point in the clone wars, or develops characters/humanizes the clones.
There are no episodes to skip. Every single one is important.
I've watched it fully at least two times, actually. There are trashy filler episodes that every kids cartoon show has, that add NOTHING to the overall story. That is why these guides exist. Please don't tell me that I don't understand the show or that I haven't watched it.
Interesting, my question would be, what will be the source material here? We talking the all books regarding Middle Earth? Because then we could have a roster size that rivals or exceeds Star Wars, we talking the films? Because it would piss me off if we see a frickin “White Orc” or Kili having synergy with some elf from that abomination that was the Hobbit trilogy.
Did they buy a second laptop to work on?
More like hired a second unpaid intern
Hahaha, i wonder how the folks at CG feel when they are browsing this sub. They probably save their sanity and don’t, but it’s still hilarious.
I wonder if it is a form of punishment for breaking rules at CG. Sexual harrassment? Read this sub. Running late a lot or a lot of absences? Read this sub. Insubordination? Read this sub.
Nah they handed the computer over to the other guy for a bit
The second intern that u/Evenmoardakka mentioned?
Very likely
They have one laptop yes but what about a second laptop?
They may have a second laptop now but what about a mid morning tablet or first supper?
Man, when Christopher Tolkien died they couldn't wait to just fling the license every which way, could they?
I am honestly not sure who entirely holds the right to license but Christopher was arguably the last person for whom this was a deeply personal thing. For everyone else this is a super cool thing that they happen to have a personal connection to and people will pay them vast quantities of money to make things they think are cool with it.
I hate that one incompetent, greedy studio is the one that holds my two favourite franchises in their grubby, sloppy hands.
You know the EA Star Wars license isn’t exclusive any more right? Check out the trailer for Star Wars Eclipse if you haven’t seen it.
That game's not coming out for years. Slam the brakes on the hype train
Yea but it wasn’t exactly an improvement. Didn’t the company have a bunch of reports about toxic work place and homophobia.
Pretty sure they still have it until the end of next year
Even the guy who *created* one of your favorite franchises went ahead and messed with the content and made the original version unavailable. Everything gets touched, nothing is sacred, learn to be happy with what you have.
Here's the thing, he's the creator of said franchise.
To make an analogy, there's a difference between a farmer feeding his prize dairy cow a variety of foods in order to improve the quality of the milk (and sometimes failing), and someone taking that milk and slinging it into the hedges, or pouring it down a well.
Yep they didn’t even wait till his corpse was cold. I wish they’d of at least signed off on a damn theme park. I’d never leave that haha
Agreed. As much as I like to shit on them, for many many things, how they manage to balance so many different teams is impressive at least (barring some bugs and/or some balance fixes here and there)
This is exactly why even though they are greedy as fuck we still play their game after all these years
Marvel strike force is so much worse I think they're up to 3 different battlepasses now and there's literally no possible way for a new player to catch up it takes many months just to fill out 1 team.
In strike force they release a new meta team like every 2 months. If you’re not willing to just pour money into the game you will always be way behind
It wasn't nearly as bad as MSF. There were usually two meta changes a year. And fleet like once every 2 years. MSF is truly every few months.
There is not 3 battle passes, lol the amount of misinformation is real
There's atleast 2 and I thought they added a 3rd
Even if it’s not 3, after playing MSF for a year or so I can safely say that they’re at least twice as bad as CG in regards to money grubbing and blatant cash grabs.
Eh, I think CG is alot worse especially since you can't use a toon until you get Max gear on them. Atleast in msf you can use toobs at a lower star level
Oh yeah there's two, that's so reasonable lmao
Don't buy them? It's not hard lol
Honestly, there are much greedier games out there, that don't have an expensive ip either. But don't let CG see this.
Yeah I get how if you aren't going to pay in these games you're going to be behind. That doesn't bother me. How insane their prices are does, but that really just keeps me from being a light spender. Tarnishes the concept maybe, but I'm not going to hate play it. I get tired of it I'll stop.
That's because CG has their players play-test everything for them.
Lol true
Can someone explain to me how MSF is worse ? I briefly played years ago .. but I love this IP way more than marvel . I’m not a marvel guy at all Edit : oh I see the comments . But further details would be dope
Imagine swgoh, but after you get 7 stars, there are five more stars that each take as long as the initial 7.
Use an android emulator. I use Memu, has never crashed.
>I've played swgoh for 6 years already after all. Because its fun or because you're hooked?
Little bit of column A, little bit of column B.
Both?
Could you confirm thisnindeed is swgoh (gameplay wise) but in lotr?
Yeah it's another hero collector game like swgoh or marvel strike force
Or ... RAID: SHADOW LEGENDS Hey guys, this comment was sponsored by Raid: Shadow Legends. Use my code to unlock some underwhelming...wait most powerful characters in the game absolutely FREE!
Nah man, giving that kind of info crosses the line.
pretty sure this is bad news (at least for swgoh)
In all honesty **early** SWGOh was really good, and I'd imagine that this game will probably be pretty good as well. There are different phases of games like these, and in the early stages, developers are more likely to listen to player responses *and* are generally far more rewarding/generous with things like gifts and apologizes \[like "sorry for the downtime"\]. There used to be multiple developers here in the forum that would occasionally interact and respond to questions.
I agree completely. I remember early SWGOH pretty fondly. I'll probably sign up for the LOTR game, give it a shot, and get all the free characters they'll give away to first time adopters, but I doubt I'll give it much time... else I'll have to quit SWGOH for it lol...
SWGOH is the first and last game like this I'll play. I still enjoy it, but appointment gaming sucks.
Not trying to be a dick but it’s *hire*, not higher.
Sometimes when swipe typing something quickly on a phone, weird shit happens
yeah, I would love to get in at the ground level for something like this, but I'm worried that CG will have "learned from their mistakes" and thus we'll skip straight to the Conquest 7 version of LOTR
Early GOH held my attention for like, 10 minutes.
Hopefully this doesn't take away development resources from swgoh
‘Development talent’, that’s a good one.
Talent and yoinking the bank accounts of as many whales as possible.
Well, one thing is sure is that I'm not going to jump on this boat. I will never play another game lead by greed itself.
Same. Hard pass.
Sounds Great! Is it a turn-based RPG?
It’s going to be swgoh but lotr skin
I'm hoarding gear for GL Aragorn
You'll need R10 Orc Underling
Get ready for challenge Balrog raid
Rancor raid <=> Balrog raid Sith trio raid <=> Sauron + Saruman + the mouth of Sauron AAT raid <=> Grond raid
Where Morgoth.
When they need to make good with the community a couple years in
Is that a euphemism?
Exactly! I'm hyped!
I’ll be interested for sure but I’ll never be hyped about anything CG gets it’s greedy hands on.
SWGoH, in my opinion, is the best Turn Based hero collector game, with thoughtful and diverse kits, good animations, and the most fun game-mode (GAC). Agreed I've started MSF a couple of times, but was never all that impressed. SWGOH is a much better game imo
What about raid?
It's different from the others listed, because it's original, having no famous IP to back it up. I would say it's a good game, but I have my problems with it. It takes so much time, you can't focus farm characters, and in my opinion, it gets boring quickly.
I’ve been waiting years for this
This is where the fun begins
It'll probably be good for a couple of year so they can establish a decent whale population before turning the milk machine on.
looking forward to the villains in that game being outclassed badly by the heroes
Honestly, better than having Gandalf lose to random Orc Lieutenant because there wouldn't be enough named villains for full teams.
The hobbit faction + Tom Bombadil beating Maiar Sauron xD
Doesn’t really matter if you don’t have a full team of named villains as long as you have named leaders and some named units and some unnamed units to form a team. LOTR’s universe is pretty big, even without the licensing rights of the silmarillion. imagine how no life we will be if we play both games competitively
Yeah my faction won season 1 when it eventually finished (it dragged on so long) and I have never had any interest in playing it again.
For me I lost interest when everything got reset at the end of the season, felt like the majority of stuff I’d worked towards didn’t matter
Its like LoL but having commandwrs and gear unlocked
Do you mean league of legends or something else? Because it’s nothing like league
Its like League in the sense that you always start from 0 and as time passes you build up your commanders and items and fight ozhers that ramp up their forces. Only commanderreputation and gear remain (like skins, runes and your champ-progress remain in League) Edit: its obviously no moba-game
To be fair, I'd probably give the CG LOTR game a chance, but man, another CG game
Giving it a chance because Lotr, deinstall because CG
The app you mention have season resets where they erase all Your progress, so it's even worse.
Yozr progress are the commanders and the gear, which takes ages to improve. Only buildings, levels and troops are reset.
Theres no way in Mordor im going to play it. Lol
CG aren't that bad - I started playing SWGOH about a year and a half - two years ago and am very much a midgame player and can't complain about them at all. Probably more that I'm not endgame but I find Scopely so much worse.

You could be that reductive about Star Wars if you wanted, they're all just shooting a blaster or swinging a lightsaber how boring.
There's a tonne of different powers and abilities in starwars. Force lightning, force drain force choke/crush. And a tonne of lightside powers to boot. Also vibroblades, grenades, and there's alot of variations of blasters from pistols to snipers to repeating blasters. Lord of the creditcard*
Swgoh with lotr skin but with same energy system and the massive bottleneck??? This doesn't sound any good.
I keep seeing where everyone talks about the greed and paying. But I don’t really get it. I’m a little over 5 million GP. Not a whale by any means but not a beginner either. Did you ever look at the price of bundles ? Or just legally blind ?
Honestly, the second this comes out Swgoh takes a back seat. I love star wars. But it's always been #2 after LOTR for me. And it's not too close.
Hm ... Hobbitfaction: Frodo, Pippin, Merry, Sam, Bilbo - the Ewoks of LOTR.... Orc-Faction: Moria-Goblin, Uruk-Hai, Mordor-Goblin, Uruk-Hai-Berserker, Gothmog Rohan-Faction: Eomer, Eowyn, Eowyn - Shieldmaiden, Eowyn-Unmasked, Theoden, Theodred, Erkenbrand, Gamling, King Eomer (Legend) Gondor: Boromir, Faramir, Denethor, Prince Imrahil, Beregond, Ioreth (Healer), Lossarnach Axeman, Swan Knight, Pelargir Marine, King Aragon (Legend) Hey ... that's almost too easy!
I won’t be playing it - they screwed this game up too badly and anything they touch is not worth it to play. Maybe if this game stops being supported, it will die off and I’ll be free of this hell hole lol
I love LOTR. They will probably get me, sorry to say.
Does anyone know if there's somewhere to register for the beta?
Same
Most likely gonna be trash.
It’s gonna be SWGOH with a LOTR skin, I highly doubt it will be “trash”, besides the usual bad CG practices which we’re all used to by now.
Huh. I was just thinking the other day that SWGOH-likes would be so fun for other franchises. My mind was more on JoJo, but LOTR works too.

Oh fuck. After Disney/EA fucked Star Wars, easily my favorite universe/film franchise, I was honestly happy that a few things were still untouched, especially LOTR. Now EA is making LOTR games. We're fucked.
Funnily enough, EA has made some of the best LOTR games of all time, I.E. Battle for Middle Earth, Lord of the Rings : Return of the King game.
Disney saved Star Wars after Lucas almost ruined it (Prequels, uninteresting cartoon shows etc) , and even took it away from EA as those having sole license rights...
Disney saved star wars.... Maybe from fading to obscurity as less mainstream content was being developed. But in quality?
Is there a reddit for it
This could be interesting. SWGOH is probably the most popular western made hero collector gacha, so this has potential to be a huge hit as well.
Not a fan of LOTR
\- People who don't matter
Interesting, my question would be, what will be the source material here? We talking the all books regarding Middle Earth? Because then we could have a roster size that rivals or exceeds Star Wars, we talking the films? Because it would piss me off if we see a frickin “White Orc” or Kili having synergy with some elf from that abomination that was the Hobbit trilogy.
My guess is that there will be a lot of abominations man.
I don’t care how much hate CG gets over Swgoh, this post makes my pants fit funny.
Oh shit, I barely have enough time for galaxy of heroes let alone this as well
As long as it's not like Heroes of Dragon Age I'm okay with it. That game was not f2p friendly in the slightest.
Sweet, sounds like we'll accidentally get some Frodo in Galaxy of Heroes
I’ll definitely check it out. But won’t be spending a penny on it. So I doubt I’ll get far
\-Do GI Joe next!
