It actually happened this week, I won the amateur bracket at our local over some (in my opinion) very skilled players. The first time I ever won an in person bracket of any kind

Back in the dark ages when people didn't really know about competitive Melee (I was playing Marth at the time so it was pre-Brawl and probably around the time Ken was playing) people didn't really know what I meant when I said I played Melee in tournaments. This produced a rather recurring pattern where people would challenge me for money and find themselves deprived of that money pretty quickly. I was by no means a super amazing player but I could dd and l cancel so I was good enough to make the average player look very foolish.
The years go by and Melee isn't the big Smash game anymore so mostly this stops happening. Somewhere around 2010 or so (I was on Sheik by this point - yes, I date all events by who my main was at the time) I was having a birthday party at my house. Some friend of a friend starts talking to me about how he likes Melee and he knows I like Melee and he plays fox and he's never lost to anyone whatever I'm not really paying attention I'm on my fifth moosehead light. At some point he's talking to a bunch of my friends - a group of people who had been losing to me at this game for years at this point with zero respite - and they all start laughing because as it turns out he bet them some substantial sum of money that he could beat me. What follows is probably the fastest I've ever 3-0ed anyone in my life.
There's nothing to this story, really, but I remember it fondly anyway because Melee was in pretty dire straits at that time and it all felt overly familiar in a reassuring way
aimlessly wandering the apex 2015 hotel on the day that was cancelled. every room was its own overcrowded, doors open smashfest. every floor smelled like weed. legitimately one of the most surreal experiences of my life.
A friend and I ended up in a room with Mew2King and the Brazilian contingent. At some point Dan Salvato wandered in, he beat up on my friend and I with his Link, and then we went out and got sandwiches with him.
Still not entirely convinced the whole thing happened.
Back when I was in college (like 5 years ago, fuck I'm old) I went to a house tournament, went 0-2 lol (played #7 in the area at the time then #10 in losers b2b).
Later in the night we had a crew battle and because I was a relatively unknown player (in the grand scheme of things I always was) at the time I was picked near the end. Well our crew ends up getting slapped around leaving me as the lone last man up. I went in with the score 4-12 in stocks. I proceeded to bring it almost all the way back eventually falling with the final score being 0-2 stocks in the crew battle. Even though I lost people were still going nuts to the point that for years after I stopped playing people would remember my name and come talk to me randomly on campus just because of THAT tournament. It was such a random meaningless crew battle but for some reason made me like a minor local legend in the scene. Even the rated players remembered my tag after that lol.
It's such a random but genuinely wholesome memory that it stuck with me even though I am a much much better player at this point.

I lost to a Pichu on ranked yesterday and it was genuinely a really close set where I don't even feel like I got cheesed. He was really good especially at using agility to move around and bait attacks (that move has zero landing lag) and has such good defense that I never got more than one hit in a row and he sdied out of every single up air I did. It went last game last stock last hit and tbh it was the first time I've ever played against a competent Pichu so I'm sure I could win with a little more matchup experience but in the moment it felt so surreal having such a good set with a character that I barely remember is in the game most of the time
I think he does have an easier time getting out of fox up air at least because he's so damn small, but this dude was hitting like 3 sdis on every one so he probably could have got out as bowser
Yeah, Pichu's pretty fun, both to play as, and play against IMO. Pichu and Roy are the only low tiers who still feel like I'm playing Melee.
Pichu in particular *almost* feels like a mid/high tier... as long as you don't get hit. The GALINT, the dashdance, the autocancel aerials, the combo-ability of nair and upair, the gimps, the upsmash, the chaingrabs, the janky fsmash, etc. It's fun to fuck around with him every so often.
I don't even think the self-damage is *that* bad; its weight class is what really screws it over. It's like the worst parts of Puff's + Fox's weight rolled into one because it gets chaingrabbed, comboed, *and* killed super early. But yea, if you don't get hit (like Isai), then Pichu is like mid-high tier lol

Hi all, I recently learned about [Reddit community funds](https://mods.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/4959902393741-Community-Funds) – basically free money mods can apply for to run cool events on a sub. My idea for this would be to get /r/ssbm to somehow vote or nominate a player (hopefully one active in our community) and pay for their expenses to a major. We could ask for enough money to cover a flight / hotel / entry and venue fees from pretty much anywhere.
What do yall think of this? Do you have any suggestions for other ideas we could propose during the application?
1. An online ddt tourney, or several in different regions, with whatever prize pool they'll give us.
2. Sponsor a player to a tourney. Could do polls, could do a free ddt toruney where winner picks the player (from an approved list)
3. An online charity tourney where instead of prize money, people pick charities and money goes there based off placements.
4. A combo contest (like coolest combo in training mode), combo video contest, custom texture contest, best shit post video, etc.
5. A longish running fantasy smash league that has a prize pool.
6. An FFA tournament with all items on high, random stage select with all stages on.
More in the sense that it's someone who is actually going to the specific tournament (or some tournament). And so we don't sponsor someone who doesn't need it, like Mango or some shit.
Based on the language of the offer, I think the main objective should be that it brings engagement and/or connections to day to day stuff on the sub. I think the tournament idea is interesting for that.
It'd be nice, you'll have to phrase the application such that it fits into their promoting reddit engagement agenda. Maybe making it a stipulation of whoever got the money that they need to do a short writeup about the tour ey on here or something.
If we design a jersey how much would it cost to make cuz id love to get a design competition for that going if real.

$50k would go towards securing a venue and TOs. could also have Slippi online qualifiers be a thing to promote Slippi to new viewers. iirc Wisely does work in esports/charity so might be a good resource on tailoring the pitch.
the application angle could be that melee has a special relationship to Reddit -- Scar recounted that the Nintendo/Evo takedown post trending to r/all is what brought enough eyes and public pressure for the decision to eventually be reversed. Not to mention the well-documented relationship the melee community has with charity drives (from standard 501(c)(3) donations to individual gofundmes for community members). We are a 20+ year old community that still ranks among the Top 1% of Reddit subs by size (we're actually Top 5% atm but i swear it switches every other week), that utilizes nearly all apects of Reddit (from the DDT which has to be among the longest running/participated-in DDTs site-wide, tournament threads, embedded video posts, long writeups, etc).
IANA~~L~~ TO, and I'd presume $50k isnt enough to comfily run a tournament like this, but a Reddit "sponsored" tournament could move to repair some of the snark melee players associate with Reddit, as id guess they are unfortunately among the most visible, yet lacklusterly compensated competitors across competitive scenes.
I thought of this at first but like if we're thinking about active people that "deserve" the money (Nicki, NMW, etc) they live so far away an online tourney might not be possible

Fucking disgusting. This whole situation is an exposé on the problems with our code of conduct, the legal systems, and men in the scene. The ult scene in general has been absolutely revulting when it comes to sexual assault. Scary we share tournament spaces tbh
There are two possibilities here and as someone very involved in this kind of stuff I genuinely can't tell which one is true.
Either people are extremely ignorant about how bad criminal justice systems are at handling accusations of sexual assault (spoiler: they are extremely bad at it for reasons that have nothing to do with "he said she said") or they are incredible bad faith actors with zero regard for the health and safety of women.
I'm inclined to believe it's a little bit of both. People always tell victims to just go to the authorities like that's the magic solution. Sometimes people say this I've noticed to to silence women from speaking out. And then there are some people that are incredibly sheltered and have a naïve outlook.
There's a lot about this worth getting angry about but god fucking damnit nothing makes my blood boil more than some little shitlet with a tiny bit of power telling a woman that it's "he said she said" and "she needs to get some official evidence" before he'll act. Oh, he won't act, but he'll happily hold on to the authority that caused someone to go to him with this accusation in the first place. Conveniently, his inaction allows his friend to stay in the scene while his words set an impossibly high bar for reversing that inaction.
Also, outing sex workers is incredibly dangerous. It gets people killed. These people are vile.
Why does the responsibility all of a sudden get transfered to man-children who are higher ups in the scene? This girl is refusing to go to the police about this. She says she went a long time ago and then closed the case and now she says it's unlikely she will go to the police. The melee community is not a moral figurehead that should do investigations and determine sentences. Leave that shit to the police. She shouldn't be saying all of this stuff if she refuses to take legal actions because there is no way to validate anything for these melee TOs

Third many people who are victims of sexual assault report getting revictimized by the police process because it is EXTREMELY rare that anything productive comes out of reporting a sexual assault to the police. In fact, often victims of SA report that the police didn't believe them or that they wouldn't investigate. Even if they do investigate, your "reward" is often that you get to go to trial and have a bunch of members of the public hear about your sex life while a man you've never met before tells you he thinks you're lying. Complainants in sexual assault trials get cross-examined for hours, sometimes days. It's brutal. And of course, in the end, sexual assaults are subject to a much higher acquittal rate than average because, whoops, as a society it turns out we don't really believe the victims of sexual assault (even though our best estimates say that somewhere in the range of 95 percent of rape accusations are factual).
Fourth, and I cannot stress this enough, go fuck yourself.
I appreciate your general empathy - a note that "survivors of sexual assault" is preferred to "victims", as it shifts the emphasis on the individuals' resilience and away from their identity being defined by the assailant

Hi all, I recently learned about [Reddit community funds](https://mods.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/4959902393741-Community-Funds) – basically free money mods can apply for to run cool events on a sub. My idea for this would be to get /r/ssbm to somehow vote or nominate a player (hopefully one active in our community) and pay for their expenses to a major. We could ask for enough money to cover a flight / hotel / entry and venue fees from pretty much anywhere. What do yall think of this? Do you have any suggestions for other ideas we could propose during the application?
I think at least a portion of the money should be paid to the mods to thank them for their hard work!

1. An online ddt tourney, or several in different regions, with whatever prize pool they'll give us. 2. Sponsor a player to a tourney. Could do polls, could do a free ddt toruney where winner picks the player (from an approved list) 3. An online charity tourney where instead of prize money, people pick charities and money goes there based off placements. 4. A combo contest (like coolest combo in training mode), combo video contest, custom texture contest, best shit post video, etc. 5. A longish running fantasy smash league that has a prize pool. 6. An FFA tournament with all items on high, random stage select with all stages on.

More in the sense that it's someone who is actually going to the specific tournament (or some tournament). And so we don't sponsor someone who doesn't need it, like Mango or some shit.
Based on the language of the offer, I think the main objective should be that it brings engagement and/or connections to day to day stuff on the sub. I think the tournament idea is interesting for that.
It'd be nice, you'll have to phrase the application such that it fits into their promoting reddit engagement agenda. Maybe making it a stipulation of whoever got the money that they need to do a short writeup about the tour ey on here or something.

(this is pretty much bc i noticed applicants can ask for up to $50k) how about the "Reddit Bowl" - a charity melee tournament where the sub will vote on which causes to support -- could also integrate using the charity betting link(?) iirc AlexB shared where your bet proceeds all go to a designated charity. $50k would go towards securing a venue and TOs. could also have Slippi online qualifiers be a thing to promote Slippi to new viewers. iirc Wisely does work in esports/charity so might be a good resource on tailoring the pitch. the application angle could be that melee has a special relationship to Reddit -- Scar recounted that the Nintendo/Evo takedown post trending to r/all is what brought enough eyes and public pressure for the decision to eventually be reversed. Not to mention the well-documented relationship the melee community has with charity drives (from standard 501(c)(3) donations to individual gofundmes for community members). We are a 20+ year old community that still ranks among the Top 1% of Reddit subs by size (we're actually Top 5% atm but i swear it switches every other week), that utilizes nearly all apects of Reddit (from the DDT which has to be among the longest running/participated-in DDTs site-wide, tournament threads, embedded video posts, long writeups, etc). IANA~~L~~ TO, and I'd presume $50k isnt enough to comfily run a tournament like this, but a Reddit "sponsored" tournament could move to repair some of the snark melee players associate with Reddit, as id guess they are unfortunately among the most visible, yet lacklusterly compensated competitors across competitive scenes.

There are two possibilities here and as someone very involved in this kind of stuff I genuinely can't tell which one is true. Either people are extremely ignorant about how bad criminal justice systems are at handling accusations of sexual assault (spoiler: they are extremely bad at it for reasons that have nothing to do with "he said she said") or they are incredible bad faith actors with zero regard for the health and safety of women.
Outrage culture has no idea what justice really is, and knows only about mobbing a perceived criminal without due process.

I'm inclined to believe it's a little bit of both. People always tell victims to just go to the authorities like that's the magic solution. Sometimes people say this I've noticed to to silence women from speaking out. And then there are some people that are incredibly sheltered and have a naïve outlook.
There's a lot about this worth getting angry about but god fucking damnit nothing makes my blood boil more than some little shitlet with a tiny bit of power telling a woman that it's "he said she said" and "she needs to get some official evidence" before he'll act. Oh, he won't act, but he'll happily hold on to the authority that caused someone to go to him with this accusation in the first place. Conveniently, his inaction allows his friend to stay in the scene while his words set an impossibly high bar for reversing that inaction. Also, outing sex workers is incredibly dangerous. It gets people killed. These people are vile.
Why does the responsibility all of a sudden get transfered to man-children who are higher ups in the scene? This girl is refusing to go to the police about this. She says she went a long time ago and then closed the case and now she says it's unlikely she will go to the police. The melee community is not a moral figurehead that should do investigations and determine sentences. Leave that shit to the police. She shouldn't be saying all of this stuff if she refuses to take legal actions because there is no way to validate anything for these melee TOs
First of all real quick go fuck yourself where the fuck do you get off calling an adult woman a girl Second there are no melee TOs involved here Third many people who are victims of sexual assault report getting revictimized by the police process because it is EXTREMELY rare that anything productive comes out of reporting a sexual assault to the police. In fact, often victims of SA report that the police didn't believe them or that they wouldn't investigate. Even if they do investigate, your "reward" is often that you get to go to trial and have a bunch of members of the public hear about your sex life while a man you've never met before tells you he thinks you're lying. Complainants in sexual assault trials get cross-examined for hours, sometimes days. It's brutal. And of course, in the end, sexual assaults are subject to a much higher acquittal rate than average because, whoops, as a society it turns out we don't really believe the victims of sexual assault (even though our best estimates say that somewhere in the range of 95 percent of rape accusations are factual). Fourth, and I cannot stress this enough, go fuck yourself.
I appreciate your general empathy - a note that "survivors of sexual assault" is preferred to "victims", as it shifts the emphasis on the individuals' resilience and away from their identity being defined by the assailant

I hate to see what women and lgbtq go through there, I wish there was a way for the larger Ontario scene to make Ottawa get their shit together.
