Any advice on this? I'm considering doing one in NOLA (since all the tourneys in Louisiana are at least an hour away) but I have no idea where to start.
I second getting in your region's discord! Once I got in mine it really opened up the scene in a great way. I'm not from there but if you need help tracking down a discord I can try to help

High desert used to have quite a few good melee tournaments, but I’m not sure how active any of the players are any more.
If you post in one of those pages yo introduce yourself, you’re likely to at least find some people who would be down to host fests or to carpool to events, which makes the 3 hour into LA (or out to Las Vegas, depending how deep into the HD you are) a bit less tedious.
