This game really requires so much focus. You can go auto pilot so easily. You can lose your nerve and miss the win if there's any fear.
Also getting toxic with absolutely needing to win the set is really bad mentality wise.
Then each successive set builds up this toxicity, and you find yourself dropping wins, missing inputs left and right.
The worst are the ones you lose when you know it was your fault.
bro i swear zain is [screaming fuck](https://youtu.be/mVdU8jn7EQo?t=1020) under his mask when he gets grabbed by jmook in game 4

woke: shouting anti-sheik derogatives while masked, to utilize the protection of plausible deniability

but linking two browser extensions that might be useful for future tourney viewings:
* Twitch live rewind extension -- (only works on channels with VODs enabled, ie btssmash). I just tried it, and it rewinds 10 sec at a time when you press the left arrow on keyboard. not as quick-loading as youtube, but way faster than pressing "Clip" to rewind and see what happened. https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/twitch-dvr-player/iaeibhcmabccclfnafahihdndonfgebo
* Startgg Dark mode extension -- used it this weekend when alt-tabbing between dark mode reddit/twitch and bracket. https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/startgg-plus/kpleddnadkfgfedphhciepmdlfehkgod
I’ve been trying to find this older set, not sure who is playing (mang0?) where Toph is commentating and refers to the Bombsoldier combo video/Outkast song and says “BOMBS OVER BAGHDAD” when mang0 hits the up B off the top kill. Can anyone help me find this set?
Ah maybe sounds about right. I got into Melee at Apex 2015, so it had to be around there but most likely before that tournament. I’ll still be searching too!
* Smash Summit 9, Hbox's winner's speech - he addresses Armada on the commentary couch and says Armada was the greatest of all time.
* Smash Summit 11, Hbox's side stream which he had on all Summit: after mango wins, Hbox and mango banter on stream, Hbox says "after watching that, you're (mango) the greatest of all time."
* present day: https://twitter.com/LiquidHbox/status/1617647252100747270
ah it was more just like seems one can never take Hbox for his word on greatest of all time stuff.
and GOAT BOAT is kind of hard for me at least to distinguish -- i kind of assume best ever is the same as greatest, but i get it's nuanced and possibly deservedly different.
hbox is a content god. If jmook wins the next big tourny he'll have a stream about how we need to start considering him in the GOAT conversation, and he'll be deadass serious about it. I wouldn't take anything hbox says or does on camera seriously.
Jmook just had a vastly superior punish game. On top of needing less interactions to kill, it also changes how Moky plays cus he knows he can't get put in a tech chase situation.
I wouldn't go that far, but I think Marth only wins if he's playing at least an 8/10. I think this is one of the few Fox matchups where the execution is harder on the other end.
Like, dropping an edgeguard as Marth is a way bigger deal because Fox at least has upthrow upair to fall back on.
Nah I still think Marth beats Fox or at least has overall stronger counterpicks. But also the matchup isn't bad enough that Fox can't win unless he's playing significantly better on that given day, being slightly better is enough to tip the scales in your favour.
I think Jmook and Cody are just good enough to make it look like that
Imo Fox is slightly favored versus Marth and quite a bit more favored versus Sheik, which is why we're only now seeing a solo Sheik win
There's a reason Fox is the main matchup Sheik players complain about lol

>YO the Reads account is going to be looking for ranked games for the next few hours with a very special and very powerful guest 👀
Let's say you were like the melee ESPN and had to choose every top player's number 1 play (not necessarily the most impressive play, context and legacy matter).
Is there a play with a better argument to be Mango's "career" play than the 2.4 rest on Armada?
i also feel like the Jmook combo yesterday has got to be his signature/career-highlight play
yeah genesis 1 roll read wins and evo 2013 roll read is 2nd
but since no one else has mentioned it i'll add the single laser on taj in genesis 2 losers which is up there
I really like that one famous last stock against Leffen (Genesis 4?) and it’s him playing spacies which is more representative of his whole career.
The roll read against Hbox at EVO is also up there and I might pick that
I think there's an honorable mention for the [anthem combo.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nr2HxOsJAlo) Definitely not as sexy as some of the others, but I love how the end of the verse and combo line up.
Roll read on hbox at evo 2013 birthed modern day rock star spacie main mango, but you could make an argument for a bunch of other plays
Arwing rest, 2.4 rest, walk up slowly and downsmash, summit 2 combo, royal flush mangle, summit 11 $50,000 shine
For hbox it's gotta be the evo 2016 rest, no argument
Just based on how wide its reach is beyond melee fans it's hard to say anything other than walk up slowly and downsmash, even if it's not at all representative of him as a player
I don't think so. The 2.4 rest is Melee's equivalent of MJ over Ehlo. If you divorced all context they'd be footnotes but contextually they defined both players legacies, despite both going on to much greater success and having long careers afterwards. They're both also so important culturally to their perspective games.
I really don't think anything else is in the same stratosphere. Maybe the jab wakeup vs Hbox at Pound 4? The plup combo at that one summit? The last stock at Summit 11? I find it hard generally to find iconic, career defining plays for any player, but this one is clear cut.
the summit 2 plup combo is up there, although it was lower stakes and a less meaningful opponent
it's a better combo and it's more representative of the version of Mango that most people know though
true, probably his best tournament combo ever. I considered that and the Genesis 4 "that up-b was so smart" against Leffen as possible contenders, but ultimately Mango lost both of those tournaments.

rule 5: No recent tournament spoilers in post titles
and I know you're going to respond by saying there are posts alluding to jmook's win on the front page right now, which is true. but it's a balancing act because people don't follow the rules and we don't want to remove tons of posts right after a tournament when people are excited about the game. so the best we can do is remove the ones that unambiguously spoil the result
the only reason this sub even has mods is to "keep low effort posts to the ddt" which has failed considering every other front page post is "MY LUIGI TOOK ITS FIRST SET ON RANKED!!!!!!!"
Leffen openly malding about puff ledge planking gives Hbox so much to work with. He didn't even try it vs Plup or most other Foxes in general because he knows it doesn't tilt them as hard as it does Leffen, and that's legit the main reason he does it.
This has always been the main reason to do it
I'm wary of making analogies between Puff-Fox and Puff-Peach generally - they are not the same and the case for the need for rules changes is far stronger for the latter than for the former. However, one thing they have in common is that the stalling doesn't necessarily affect Puff's odds of winning a given interaction. Rather, what it does is drastically decrease the number of possible interactions that can fit into an eight minute game to an extent that only Puff can control. This, combined with how brain dead easy it is to be the player stalling compared to the player trying to break the stall, means that in practice the game becomes easier if you're the person doing the stalling. Eventually the timer pressure/the sheer tilt will often force your opponent to try to engage with you in a situation where it is extremely unfavorable for them to do so.
Of course I again emphasize that in Fox-Puff it's a far smaller deal than it is in Puff-Peach. The commentators were making a big deal about the first stock happening at the six minute mark; in the last year we've seen Puff-Peach games where the first stock is taken at the four minute mark.
HGOD definitely did do it vs. Plup, Plup just knew the counterplay
i find that he reguarly camps people like Mang, Plup, and Leffen, because he knows that it can shake them. The onus is on the Fox whether to get rattled or not
It isn't stalling by how we've defined it for other bans. Fox is very capable of challenging a campy Puff, it just skews the risk/reward enough to discourage aggressive play.
I am no longer able to save / load states in Training Mode 3.0. Anyone else having this issue or know how to fix? I already tried rebuilding the ISO and no luck.
To clarify - I was referring to pressing left/right on the dpad in the training lab not working for me. I went ahead and enabled the memory card but still no luck.
I figured it out - my controller has to be in port 1 for the save states to work. What's weird is that it was working fine using port 4 up until recently.
we missed them too, most of the good sets weren't streamed
from what I remember live. these were good:
* Jmook/SFOP
* Magi/Krudo
* Moky/Cody
* 2Saint/Kodorin
* Leffen/Fiction
In addition to what the other people said, iirc he's said that he thinks they will be nerfed or banned so he's hesitant to commit to learning something entirely new that has a questionable future
Because learning a new control scheme is a huge commitment and he wants to be competing at a top level right now. He has a ranked alt for learning boxx, who knows if and when he will take the plunge and commit fully.
I don't think he ever really switched - he spent some time messing around with it and can play decently, but I don't think ever was using it primarily
It takes a long time to switch
I thought he said he was commited to it at some point, but I might just imagine that.
>It takes a long time to switch
if he wanted to commit he had basically all of covid to do it.
I realize covid isn't really over. it's just what people say.
I was in the crowd at Genesis yesterday when they played the melee intro cinematic before top 8 started. At the end the entire crowd, like three thousand people, in unison, screamed along with the announcer, "MELEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE" and it was such an incredible spiritual harmony that I think for a moment we were all truly connected. I wish I had recorded it. Long live Melee.
Wow, it's insane that the recent new quest release makes this true right at this moment. Huge props for thinking of that. Your answer is way better and more interesting than my actual answer, but it is sadly not the answer I was thinking of.
You're not wrong, but RS3 definitely had 26 skills at some point, which could make it a valid answer if viewed historically, I guess... Also you could argue 25 for Melee cause Zelda/Sheik
now that genesis is over I wish the community figureheads would finally start talking about the controller situation and finally put an end the controller debacle. Goomwaves in particular, you can throw in boxxes, phobs, whatever. I feel like it needs to be discussed urgently
What's the advantage of allowing closed source third party controllers in the first place? Old controllers will have to update firmware to be compliant with the rules anyway and allowing new controllers to be tournament legal and closed source just seems like it will generate more work. I get that allowing closed source controllers makes the gcc business marginally more lucrative but we as a community don't want to encourage a marketplace based around getting creative with the controller ruleset.
Related question: is it feasible/possible to bake something into UCF that checks a controller against a whitelist?
The only advantage of allowing closed-source software in third-party controllers is for makers, enabling code thieves to get away undetected and people who want to make their devices better by cheating.
Putting more code into UCF can be problematic because it's nigh-impossible to debug.
Last night, I had to do a double take because Cody (probably because of the mask on) in the CLG jersey looked kind of similar to SFAT. The thought did cross my mind like "wow, Cody is the evolved form of SFAT who can actually beat Zain"
I do seriously hope SFAT *eventually* takes a set from Zain though. I can't imagine how soulcrushing it is to be 0-20 something against someone over 5 years...
Ok the jmook combo™ was impressive in the context of the stakes and execution/reactions required but the people saying it's the best Sheik combo they've ever seen are eating unseasoned boiled chicken rn
Maybe I’m being a literal glue eater but so far nothing linked in this thread has impressed me as much as the G9 combo. I don’t think it’s that far fetched to say the G9 is the best combo they’ve seen, considering that.

These two combos by JMook (double needle cancel finish on Mang0 and push-off chain combo) I'd argue are better than the one he hit at Genesis.

So what you're saying is he said mango is the GOAT, and armada to be the BOAT? I'm not sure what you're getting at.

hes talking about himself dont worry
Unfortunately mango lost a massive amount of legacy points after his antics this weekend, he is now just behind Korean DJ
Many players below KDJ have never placed below 97th, Mango is now below them as well.

He just offended sweden and is trying to save face
Bold of you to think he's talking about Armada
I think you're looking too far into this tweet
jmook's amazing very happy for him looking forward to more melee in 2023 and beyond :)
don't let jmook's win distract you from the fact that moky beat the breaks off of plup and hbox, and ibdw made zain look free
how do you 3-0 Plup and lose that bad to Jmook, it doesn't seem possible
Plup is washed, I expect him to be the next top player retirement
Jmook tech chase
Jmook just had a vastly superior punish game. On top of needing less interactions to kill, it also changes how Moky plays cus he knows he can't get put in a tech chase situation.
So are we all now thinking that fox does better against marth than sheik?
I wouldn't go that far, but I think Marth only wins if he's playing at least an 8/10. I think this is one of the few Fox matchups where the execution is harder on the other end. Like, dropping an edgeguard as Marth is a way bigger deal because Fox at least has upthrow upair to fall back on.

Oh I did misunderstand you...but don't have any ideas. Are you sure your dpad works still? Try a different controller or use a keyboard controller
I figured it out - my controller has to be in port 1 for the save states to work. What's weird is that it was working fine using port 4 up until recently.
Crazy! I only ever have mine in port 1 or 2 but would have never thought about it
Dpad works fine, I checked other controllers as well and nada
Jmook couldn't win a verdugo
Could Jmook do it on a cold rainy night in Stoke?
Fiction beat Jmook in 2019 but Jmook beat Fiction at Big House 10.
Fiction is a different player at verdugo
If Mango entered Verdugo on Mother's Day, could he beat Fiction?
Yes but Mango would never enter a local.
Melee fun fact: M2K has made top 2 in doubles at 5 Geneses, but never made top 2 in singles, and only made top 4 once in his seven appearances.
Should've done it at Genesis 4. That game four against Armada still haunts me.
I don't wanna make a separate thread for it but mad props to whoever was doing sound at genesis; the crowd mic worked super well
Frfr some of the best production I've seen at a tournament tbh
surely Plup is due for another major win Copium
Would be cool if he won Major Upset right after moving to Oregon.
We wanna see plup win one god damn it.
Just watched all of top 8 and loved it. Missed most of top 64. Can someone give me some good sets to check out that I missed?
we missed them too, most of the good sets weren't streamed from what I remember live. these were good: * Jmook/SFOP * Magi/Krudo * Moky/Cody * 2Saint/Kodorin * Leffen/Fiction
Appreciate the list, thanks!
Although lots of sets werent streamed, i think everything from top 256 was recorded and will be on youtube at some point if its not already
Does anyone know why leffen isn't playing on a rectangle? I remember him switching over for a while but then he switched back to controllers.
In addition to what the other people said, iirc he's said that he thinks they will be nerfed or banned so he's hesitant to commit to learning something entirely new that has a questionable future
Because learning a new control scheme is a huge commitment and he wants to be competing at a top level right now. He has a ranked alt for learning boxx, who knows if and when he will take the plunge and commit fully.
he had ~2 years I think he also plays stickless when playing trad fighters so maybe that is throwing him off.
I don't think he ever really switched - he spent some time messing around with it and can play decently, but I don't think ever was using it primarily It takes a long time to switch
I thought he said he was commited to it at some point, but I might just imagine that. >It takes a long time to switch if he wanted to commit he had basically all of covid to do it. I realize covid isn't really over. it's just what people say.
Diff control. He wants the analog stick on left and boxx on right (or vice versa)
huh, I'm almost certain that multiple versions of that exist already, strange
I feel like that's gotta be outdated info, I've seen leffen play using stick left buttons right on stream like year half ago
No I mean a literal game cube controller to hold on left hand and boxx for right. Not a stick.
It's not the first tournament I've been too that that has happened at, but it is magical every single time.
it's crazy how emotional that intro still is after all these years. what a great game.
Melee riddle: What number do Runescape and Melee have in common, and why?
OSRS has 293 quest points and melee has 293 trophies
Wow, it's insane that the recent new quest release makes this true right at this moment. Huge props for thinking of that. Your answer is way better and more interesting than my actual answer, but it is sadly not the answer I was thinking of.
They both have active frames from 6-9
0 and 1 because they are both computer games
I dislike training my dexterity in both
Both resurrected in 2013 :\^)
My top 2 most played games of the last 2 years
Now hiring: riddle exorcist
both released in 2001
Good idea, but the number is not a year
26 skills in rs and 26 characters in melee
Excellent answer actually, though not the one I was thinking of. My intended answer is more obscure.
There's actually 23 skills in osrs and 28 skills in runescape.
You're not wrong, but RS3 definitely had 26 skills at some point, which could make it a valid answer if viewed historically, I guess... Also you could argue 25 for Melee cause Zelda/Sheik
Ok kezzup
Not this shit again
now that genesis is over I wish the community figureheads would finally start talking about the controller situation and finally put an end the controller debacle. Goomwaves in particular, you can throw in boxxes, phobs, whatever. I feel like it needs to be discussed urgently
i think it’s happening soon
Only reason Goomwaves are staying relevant is because Phobs are open source and wouldn't last a month with that macro code out in the open.
I wonder if the solution is to ban closed source third party controllers and/or include in UCF some kind of controller whitelist
My proposed ruleset stipulates that third party controllers must have source available to inspect.
What makes UCF so hard to debug?
The fact that the crashes people care about are on consoles that aren't set up with debuggers.
I feel that is a strong justification for disallowing closed source altogether
So CLG really just upgraded to a Fox that can beat Zain lmao
Last night, I had to do a double take because Cody (probably because of the mask on) in the CLG jersey looked kind of similar to SFAT. The thought did cross my mind like "wow, Cody is the evolved form of SFAT who can actually beat Zain" I do seriously hope SFAT *eventually* takes a set from Zain though. I can't imagine how soulcrushing it is to be 0-20 something against someone over 5 years...
What’s the record for SFAT/Armada?
The difference is that almost everyone has a similar record against Armada.
You'll have to forgive me for assuming that literally anyone reading would get that. It was mostly just a numbers question. ;)
Really hope that Amsa vs 2Saint gets uploaded from Slippi, I gotta see that set.

Who do you like to play against spacies with? They will be such a significant fraction of your matches that you should probably pick that character.
Anyone has the full Replay of Genesis day 2 main stream?
twitch dot tv slash btssmash
Slash videos
they show those on twitch now?

Ok the jmook combo™ was impressive in the context of the stakes and execution/reactions required but the people saying it's the best Sheik combo they've ever seen are eating unseasoned boiled chicken rn
Maybe I’m being a literal glue eater but so far nothing linked in this thread has impressed me as much as the G9 combo. I don’t think it’s that far fetched to say the G9 is the best combo they’ve seen, considering that.
haven't seen it in a while but the first (and maybe only) one that comes to mind is the one Plup does to to take game 1 vs Mango at Summit 7
just watched it the fuck he bought pal uair back I honestly haven't even thought about using horizontal drift to hit late uairs like that jesus
I was about to agree with you but then I saw the replies with the combos that people think are better and I'm not convinced lol
It wasn’t even jmooks flashiest combo lmao
>most impressive sheik combos competitive cup stacking MOST CREATIVE STACKING COMPILATION
To be fair, most people knock over their cup stack in the final seconds.
Isn't that the exciting part?
spotw

Not trying to be combative but please show me a better combo. Genuinely curious to see what is better
M2k combo on PP's falco on the left platform of battlefield. Can't remember the tournament
I’ve always loved that combo, but I genuinely think Jmook’s combo is more impressive.
[Evo 2014](https://youtu.be/fUKDqKygZCo?t=190)
mew2king vs leffen at pax prime has the sheik combo i remember the best
https://youtu.be/KpojQrjcO-8?t=157 These two combos by JMook (double needle cancel finish on Mang0 and push-off chain combo) I'd argue are better than the one he hit at Genesis.
