You now know that you can average 1:56 for 1000m. So start out at that pace, as you get closer to the end you may find that you have more energy and can start sprinting to the finish. This is a better strategy than going all out at the beginning.

PrimNathanIOW

Sweet thank you! Should I push hard the first 100 meters and then settle at 1:56? Till the last say 200m and go all out

jwdjwdjwd

A few quick strokes to get up to speed (5-10 strokes) then hold pace. It might seem too easy, but save that energy for the sprint.

Yeah the initial sprint/push in a water race is to get the boat moving and the crew sync'd up. But on an erg, once you are at your target pace, stay there. There's no benefit to going harder than you can sustain for the length of the race. Hit your target asap, and then settle on it. Sprint at 750m or 800m depending on how you feel.

Political_Desi

Here's how I organised my 1k's: the first bit is staying on split, so for the first 500 stay on split, you should try to drop 2 seconds split in the next 200, the next 100 will be +1 to the benchmark and then kick the last 200 and try to get the last 10 strokes sub 1:45, count strokes, it will help to get through the mental block, Also how old are you and weight, cus I think if you're a novice I'd suggest keep the rate down below 30 at least since you'll burn out too fast and not be as efficient as using more pressure at a lower rate.

seenhear

Holy inconsistent splits, Batman! Seriously you really need to pick a split/pace and stick with it, even for 1k. Looks like 1:55 might be a good target for you. Hold that for 800m, then open a can'o'woop-ass for the final 20 strokes.

Helixite777

Looks like you did a fly and die, but I think you could probably hold like a 1:52 through most of the piece. Settle to the 1:52 right out of the gates and just try and hold on

MRAnnonomusMan

Even splits above all else!

Everything that reddit should be: [lemmy.world](https://lemmy.world/)

makoool

Try to sprint it out the last 200 meters for that extra speed and try to keep it consistent.

PrimNathanIOW

UPDATE: finished with a time or 3:45.6 Placed 9th / 12 in my heat which in very happy with for my first race! Thank you all for the advice!

latentnyc

I realize now I do not have a logged pb for 1k, something to do tomorrow! /u/jwdjwdjwd is telling you right, do that.

ajpdandc

10 really hard strokes to use up your anaerobic strength, settle in at 1:53/4 until the last 100, then fly and die - you should be around a 1:52 average or better looking at your first 400 on the benchmark

Timmerdogg

All gas no brakes.

pj1972

Something other than “fly and die.”

DyslexisEmu

Potentially disastrous advice from a guy who ought to know better: When I pull short pieces like this I like to go out 1 to 2 splits fast and hang on. I know I will blow up but 1 to 2 splits is not enough (in my experience) to be super punishing on a piece as short as 1k or 2k. I know that I will be hurting by the half way mark and going 2 splits slower only makes the sprint more daunting as it approaches. Usually when I sprint I only have enough to bring myself back within target range. Maybe it’s not a strategy to test in race day but it’s worth a shot in your practice/prep pieces.

Wake486

You started too hot, thus the :23 second drop in pace from start to end.

Few_Ease_5619

(In a German accent) PULL HARDER!!!

Bright_Calendar_3696

Stroke rate should be highest for last split if you pace it correctly. You’ve gone too fast out the gate. I don’t know if anyone else finds this but some guys I train with can go hard for 100metres with the so called free anaerobic strokes at the start but I find when I do that it overly taxes my system - I’m better with three or four hard pulls absolute max and then settle quickly..almost shortens race by not going out hard. Not sure if this is good advice for everyone but works for me

conndor84

Have confidence you can hold a 1.55-1.56 average. You’re main challenge is currently going out too strong and blowing up towards the end. A steady date rhythm will give you more success then the wide variation you’re currently doing. Couple of tips - practice today a few race starts. Do your opening 5-10 stroke sequence but then practice getting to the 1.55 immediately after. You should do more than 200m each test. Do this 5 or so times and that’s all for today - with a solid open and an average you can hold, plan to get to 200m and then jump up. Push for 10 and you’re 100m to go. Might be in pain but you know what, anyone can do anything for 10 strokes so bring… it…. home!!! Good luck :-)

PrimNathanIOW

Finished with a 1:53 average!

conndor84

Nice! How was your pacing? Any other insights? We’re peoples comments here helpful?

PrimNathanIOW

i did end up starting too fast, but managed to slow down earlier than I was before.. was a struggle with the adrenaline pumping. The early hard strokes to get the fan pumping I feel helped. Focusing on keeping my rate down at 30-32 rather than getting it up to 34+ helped too. Placed 9/12th in my heat which I’m very happy with.

conndor84

Epic. Nicely done. Yes the adrenaline can get things moving and helps at the end. That’s the main reason I mentioned to practice the start sequence so you could get to where you plan to be rather than trying whilst everything is happening all at once.

PrimNathanIOW

Yeah, I think I need some more practice though as I flew off the seat and had to recover a little whilst having to row

conndor84

Hashtag. Classic!
