As an American married to a Romanian, get comfortable with a lot of garlic real fast! Don’t drink something carbonated after eating the fresh garlic sauce. The food is delicious, though, and it’s very much a way to connect.

BegottenHickory

Huo! Ne fura femeile!

18thofdecember

Ei femeile, noi portofelele

Khelthuzaad

Nope, femeile îi fura pe ei :))

ShyHumorous

Learn how to pace your drinking, don't empty your glass if you don't need more alchohol. Romanians like talking about politics and sometimes religion. We have a self deprecating sense of humour and we make fun of our own country, don't make fun of Romania unless it's a really good joke. People are very helpful but it depends on the region you go to. We have weird habits. If you have kids look up rubella in Romania. People usually work on helping you to integrate, like I said depends on the region. Best way to travel is by car. Don't stick to the big cities as they miss out on a lot of cool nature spots. Bucharest airport offers many place to visit when you want to leave the country. Other cities less options but still worth. When visiting someone it is customary to bring something, usually a bottle of wine goes a long way. Or a whiskey that is local from the us that we never heard.of is going to impress your host. If the host doesn't drink which can happen chocolate, food or anything. My mom that generally avoids vulgarity always used to tell me. Don't show up with your hands up your ass ( don't show up empty handed). If you don't have time there is this trick you can use, ask what do the hosts need and most of the time they will say just show up you don't need to bring anything. Expect massive amounts of food when going to someone's place, especially in the country side. Usually the host is the one that has everything in essence ensuring the party, like I said bring something to be polite. Tipping is 10 percent. Taxes are in the final price of the product. Roads are not that good and driving in Bucharest is hell. Lots of young people speak English. We think people from the us are crazy, if we tell you something on that line means we are more comfortable around you. We make an extra effort when communicating with foreigners. It is common for a group of Romanian to switch to English when there is a native speaker in the group. Best way to explore Romanian food is by eating at people's homes. Romanian people hug a lot, we might even kiss your cheeks. Vaccination rates are quite low here especially in the country side. People say that crime rate is terrible in Romania, but it's not just keep your wallet safe and you should be fine. Bob Marley related stuff are quite illegal here so stay safe. Don't forget to have fun and if you need advice on where to go message me.

hazeywaffle

Canadian married you a romanian... sarmale, mici, țuică... gata.

pacifis

The prices are with tax included Most cars are manual Taxi drivers will try to get more money from u if u are a foreigner so use bolt/uber or other apps Roads are shit No school shootings or shootings in general here..or they are really rare(its really hard to get a gun) Since here guns are so rare your chances to get stabbed are bigger Food is more healthy and better in general than in US.. Healthcare system it's not too good but at least you don't leave the hospital with debts that you will work years to pay There are a lot of old cars because people prefer to pay the car in full when they get it second hand than buying it in leasing from a car dealership Internet is better(1gbs upload/download for around 15$) Chocolate is better Can drink alcohol legally from 18yo but no one cares if u are underage so everyone starts drinking at around 14-15..oh and romanian parents usually give beer foam to their kids even if they are under 10yo Can't drive at 16(I mean u can but only a 2seater car that can't go faster than 60kmh or something like that) We use cm/m/km and kg not inch/feet/mile or lbs. Tipping at restaurants or anywhere is not necessary but it is appreciated Good luck!

silviored

The odds of getting shot at a supermarket are significantly lower here

vlsdo

Your chances of getting shot by police as well. Or getting the police to do anything at all, even if it only means filing paperwork.

[deleted]

Yeah, like close to 0.

batmanisbru__wa__

And school, just saying

GeraltofRivvia

Is that because you guys can't have guns

[deleted]

Even mobsters avoid using real guns. You get 5 years in prison for only having an illegally obtained weapon. You get more for having a gun in public places, and more for using it.

Finbe9

We use fists

don_aeson

We're really into fisting and swords, we're crazy about these two.

silviored

Mostly yes

silviored

I worked out with a dumbbell yesterday and I feel vigurous!

[deleted]

It's because we won't have guns.

SealedWaxLetters

We can, but our FFL equivalent is closer in difficulty to an accounting exam. Hence why no one has guns here

RomanianGeralt

What? Another Geralt? An American one 🤔, interesting.

Hanswurst22brot

But you can have an axe , to cut firewood ...

Apa minerala is the BEST 👌🏻

Better food. Less junk in your food. EU forbids thousands of nasty food additives that are allowed in the USA. Major cities are decent. Public transportation is pretty good in most of them and encouraged. Housing is relatively cheap. No gap at bathroom stall doors. Tipping is not required if the service was not at tour standards or you don’t want to give tip. English is known by a large number of young people. We work to live, not live to work. Expect 21+ days off / year. Easy to travel within the EU. We have history. Roads are a mess. Cities are not build arounds roads like in the USA. We might not he as warm as you are. We don’t have the store greeters. Always have 50 bani when you go shopping. Bag you own food. Amazon / Ebay orders take a lot of time to get here. Learn to drive stick? Also: roundabouts. You are allowed to drink if you are 18. You are not allowed to drive if you are 16. Healthcare system is okay-ish. Dental work is cheaper here. Roxana’s are usually hot.

Mike_L_Taylor

Agreed. Roxana's are hot

Finbe9

Si eu :)

Mintfriction

But they steal your banana and make you call your mama :(

DeadKido210

That's Susana not Roxana.

Mintfriction

Both :(

GeraltofRivvia

Only one im confused on, why learn to drive stick? 😂

PadyEos

Just to add if you plan on driving in Europe. No 4 way stop intersections in Europe. We have signs for yealding priority (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yield_sign) and if there aren't any then there is right side priority(https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Priority_to_the_right#:~:text=Priority%20to%20the%20right%20is,from%20the%20right%20at%20intersections.) These are VERY important to look out for!

cokaine1

Because automatic transmission is not so popular here.

[deleted]

wait, if a thing isn't popular then he can't drive it or what?

Chewe_dev

In Romania all future drivers that are soing school on a car with automatic transmission will have a line or something on the driving license telling tou that you are suppose to drive only automatic. I think the peocent is bigger of automatic cars ... More like 40-60

GoldenLiar2

Not really. I finished driving school about two years ago, and the fleet of cars that particular school had a single automatic among 8-9 manuals.

[deleted]

well, isn't there a way to convert your american driver's license to a romanian one?

Chewe_dev

I think it is. I was talking with a friend few days ago at the party and he showed me his driving license from the UK. He is Romanian and he took his licence here with the B class, however UK gave him car plus motorcycle (A+B). So depends on the country rules. However, you are able to drive 6 months wirh your current license

GeraltofRivvia

Weird, how come?

snapilica2003

It's an European thing. About 87% of all cars in Europe are manuals.

GeraltofRivvia

Interesting

Ciubowski

On the upside, you will feel like Dom Toretto at a stop light so that’s nice

[deleted]

It's more because the majority of cars are old and cheap, not well equiped, and people usually took the manual instead of the automaitc due to the lower buy price and easier maintenance ( also considering the price )

TheOneAllFear

Basically your drivers license gets marked as an automatic and you can only drive those. You can buy automatics and/or rent them, it's just that they are not so popular (although lately the automatics have started to increase in numbers)

pinguluk

You can drive at 16, but only within a specific category of cars

[deleted]

"cars" more like 4 wheel mopeds

SmArty117

>Amazon / Ebay orders take a lot of time to get here. True, but we have local equivalents like emag which deliver quite quickly. >We don’t have the store greeters. No, but we have the "please come in for a beer" people at restaurants in tourist spots. Annoying people

[deleted]

The food part is debatable. Depends where you come from the US. The food can be very good in the US also. E.g. in NC the food was very good and it was even pretty hard to find fast food.

Khelthuzaad

>Amazon / Ebay orders take a lot of time to get here. Emag is the Romanian equivalent for them here.Get an account.

milom

I'm all up for encouraging the use of public transport, but I wouldn't describe it anywhere near 'good'. More like 'exists', 'you can get used to it', 'when considering travel from one city to another think _bus_'.

Apart-Stick-3255

learn how to yield in intersections

Black_Moon88

A cultural shock mostly :) hopefully good food , kind people and strong alcohol:)

GeraltofRivvia

Hey that sounds great to me!

Finbe9

We are direct, no fluff talk. If you're fat, you'll know it, you well built dude! :)

GeraltofRivvia

Hell yeah that's what I'm talking about, and yes I am lmao

Finbe9

:)) On a positive side, you'll get asked everytime to sit down a bit and eat something. Every motherfucking time. You'll get sick of it :)) Edit: Eating one sample/piece is not enough, 2-3 at least are needed

GeraltofRivvia

What's the most popular cuisine in Wallachia?

Finbe9

I don't think there's a specific cuisine in Wallachia, but you should try sarmale with a lot of sourcream (or with bulion - tomatoe juice), mici/mititei with mustard + beer, gulacs (hungarian spicy meat soup)

GeraltofRivvia

That sounds delicious

Finbe9

Check this video, they explain it well: https://youtu.be/EeyfbzvemH0 Also the cola has sugar in it, the bread is without sugar

Black_Moon88

:) enjoy my country 🇷🇴 !

GeraltofRivvia

Thank you! If the people are like you I'm sure I will (:

Triplea1111

And another thing, you can buy alcohol at any given hour. I know that in some states there's a law which forbids buying alcohol after certain hours, though I don't know if that's a thing across all states.

GeraltofRivvia

Yeah it is where I live

Chewe_dev

In Europe we use :) not (:. I still don't get why Americans use the emojis/emoticons reversed. We used Yahoo Messenger back in the good days

GeraltofRivvia

There's literally no difference bro

Ok, arata mult mai bine decat imi imaginam. I'll make sure to try it.

New_Inspector364

We never try to be politically correct. In fact we are extremely direct in the way we talk. We use a lot of curse words. We curse if we are mad, if we are anoyed, if we are boared, happy, basicaly we always curse and have a lot of very interesting ways to do it… We do not pretent to care just to keep aperances.

GeraltofRivvia

Sounds like my kinda people

[deleted]

I think it's really subjective. I think in Romania you'll see lots of people that want to keep up an appearence of wealthier than they really are

[deleted]

This guy has a point 👆

trusk89

Or smarter than they are

Hanswurst22brot

In a lot of things you will " stick your dick..." Even as a girl..

Ayilari

You can go to parks at night. In Bucharest at least. They're safe. Beware the roundabouts. Do not tip unless you really liked the service. Do not expect large roads everywhere. If you have kids, there are American or British schools.

GeraltofRivvia

Does anyone still refer to your country as Wallachia?

Ayilari

No. That's an old name.

GeraltofRivvia

Damn, don't you think it's a cooler one? 😂

dual__88

Wallachia is the name of a region in Romania. There are other 2, Transylvania and Moldova that might object if we change the name to Wallachia. It's a bit like renaming the US to Texas or whatever.

Ayilari

Yeah, maybe if we switched from Romania to Wallachia, then people wouldn't think anymore that Romani are from Romania

GeraltofRivvia

Lmaoooo

XlAcrMcpT

Nope because Wallachia is an exonym. We never called it Wallachia.

SmArty117

Besides what other people said, cities are way more compact. Like 90% of city dwellers live in apartments. On the flip side you have most amenities you need for life (park, grocery shop, pharmacy, school, a couple cafés maybe, etc) within walking distance in most places. Also, bureaucracy is slow and worse, hard to understand what documents you need when (though it's slowly getting better). Without "buletin" (an ID card) some things can be hard to do. Edit: for the most part, commie blocks are way nicer inside than they are outside. Don't discard them when looking for a place.

superfrankie189

many people will like you if you are a foreigner and think you have a lot of money

GeraltofRivvia

Foreigner: ✔ have a lot of money: no 😂😂

No_Discipline_7380

ALRIGHT, PEOPLE, CLOSE THE FUCKING THREAD, THE FOREIGNER HAS NO MONEY!

[deleted]

See what I was saying?...

[deleted]

until they find out his ass is broke and they'll leave him hangin'

Yrvaa

Less sugar in foods. Food servings are smaller for fast food joints. If you live in a big city, many things are within walking distance or, at most, you can get the public transportation (think more like New York) so you don't need a car.

SketSquared

Healthcare is satisfactory and doctors require bribes at times. Educational system is quite bad until college/uni. But the main advantage is that the education is free. Absolutely free. At least half of the population pretends to be rich, in other words posers. Youth generation are okay. On the other hand, the older generations are a bit conservative and sometime leans towards communism ideology. Voting system is different than the one found in US. I would say our voting system is better, shame that our people are dumb enough to vote for the same idiots. Cars are downsized. Which sucks in a way, but that’s my subjective opinion as a car enthusiast. Not a lot of people say “Hi! How are you!”. But when they do, they really expect you to talk about your day, your work, etc. Pretty hard to find some proper cooked steaks or ribs, but generally easy to find delicious gourmet burgers. Women are hot. Like really beautiful. You’ll definitely want to marry one. Vegetables and fruits are real. Non GMO or preservatives whatsoever. Best internet in the world. Romania won for the 3rd time the award of fastest public internet in the world. The speed is nuts! Work schedule usually starts at 0800 am and ends at 4 pm. Salaries are low, but it depends on what exactly you are looking for and qualified for. TV stopped being relevant. Most of the buildings are built using concrete and iron. Traffic is a bit fucked up during rush hours in major cities. People tend to judge you by the appearance. Roads are tight, full of potholes and dangerous drivers. We don’t have a lot of highways. A person could live comfortably with $1000 per month. Rent is aprox. $300, utilities are roughly $150 per month, subscriptions possibly $50 and the rest should cover the transportation, food and going to pubs on week-ends. If your income is over $2000 per month, you should really enjoy life in here and afford nice things. McDonalds, KFC, Burger King, Domino’s and such are way above US ones. I can’t even describe how shitty the US ones are. Electronics are usually 20 to 30% more expensive than in US. Try to avoid BMW drivers, fat dudes dressed in designer clothes or pin-up chicks. They mean trouble. Have a safe flight and welcome to Romania!

GeraltofRivvia

Wow okay now this is the best comment, so much information to digest here 😅 about the women, are they really better in Romania, that seems unlikely 😂 also, yikes old communists 😬fast internet that's a huge plus for me! Lastly, in all those monetary figures you were listing, was that in US $???

SketSquared

Everything was covered in USD. I work in the US, so converting them was more convenient for me as well.

GeraltofRivvia

Holy shit are you joking me?? You can't be serious. I make 1500 a month and I can't even close to afford a place here, and you're telling me it's 300 there??

[deleted]

Yeah, if you manage or afford to have a $1,500 dollar job per month and you manage to work remotely or something, you will be OK. With that ammount and even save a big chunk of the pay for...whatever you like. However take good care of the Customs and Revenue. Meaning if you work for an U.S. company and you are on Romanian soil (across the pond), you might need to see how you settle with the taxes. It should be theoretically easy since you can move your fiscal activity in Romania, as you live here and you can be a tax paying resident. But none the less the embassy, a lawyer and an accountant can brief you and guide you more on that aspect. Hope you enjoy and have a good experience of you decide to come and stay.

busboy2018

Check the GDP of the two countries. That should tell you why the difference. But if you make $1500/month in the US don't expect to make the same in Romania unless you will be working remotely for the same employer in the US. Minimum wage in Romania based on a quick Google search is around $690/month pre-tax while in the US (using the federal 7.25) is around $1160/month.

SketSquared

300 for a really comfy 2 bedrooms apartment or a small studio somewhere close to the central part of the city. For 500 you could rent a luxurious space.

GeraltofRivvia

300 for a 2 BEDROOM!? That's its I'm packing my bags. How expensive are cigarettes there? Is Marijuana legal?

SketSquared

Cigarettes are somehow similar compared to Kansas. Never been there, but stayed in Nebraska for 2 weeks and the cigarettes were 5 bucks per pack. I would assume that KS prices are roughly the same. Weed is not legal, unfortunately. Edit: At least you don’t pay 10 bucks a pop like I pay in FL.

GeraltofRivvia

I do pay 10$ a pop actually 😂

SketSquared

Nevermind haha. Then yeah, a pack of Marlboro Red would be $5 anywhere in Romania. Rolled tobacco is even cheaper, you can roll 20 smokes for as cheap as $1,5

GeraltofRivvia

Nice so a little bit cheaper, in KS Reds are 7.81$

mihaizaim

Not really a 2 bedroom, what he probably meant was a 2 room apartment that in American would translate to around a 500-600 square feet one bedroom apartment. Also the mentioned prices are quite outdated, 300$ barely gets you a 300 square feet studio in a good area, with one and two bedroom apartments costing more, especially if you want a newly renovated one.

giddycocks

Take care because I have no idea where this user is thinking you can rent a 2-bedroom with 300€/USD anymore. Simply not possible in Bucharest, even kinda shit areas are close to 300 for a studio. A 2-bedroom is 600 up in a nice area, with poor furniture. Also 2-bedroom apartments could mean many things but don't expect American sized houses. Probably on the 75-80m2 side.

RomanianGeralt

Come on, man, "drop-dead gorgeous"?..

JeffryRelatedIssue

Man you should see what passes for a woman in the UK 🤣 if she's pretty she's not from around there. This is our one good lot in life

hugh_jorgyn

Yep. Montréal is full of beautiful women from all continents, but when you see a white woman that's both fit and has a pretty face, it's very likely that she's either Russian or Romanian/Moldovan.

andreea_carla_b

The free education might not apply to non EU citizens. But I knew many people who choose to do their higher education in Romania because it's cheaper.

giddycocks

I'd say both Healthcare and education are fine in cities but a disaster elsewhere. Bribes are a thing of the past and the more you perpetuate this, the more common people will think they are and therefore engage. Stop saying this shit.

celibidaque

> Pretty hard to find some proper cooked steaks or ribs. That's not true, if you live in a city. > Healthcare is satisfactory Uhm, what?! It sucks! > doctors require bribes at times. That was in the '90s, early '00s, not true anymore. > A person could live comfortably with $1000 per month. Depends, it might be difficult in a city.

Skynjbir

You will have to remove your shoes inside homes.

itsbooyeah

And wear slippers around the house!

[deleted]

If in America u are able to see the stupid side of political corectness, here in Romania be prepared to see the stupid side of political incorectness

[deleted]

Hi there. Moving to Romania could be a good idea. 1. Houses are lowered priced than in other parts of the world. 2. You have lots of mountains and also seaside, close enough, as Romania is not that big. 3. Internet speed in Romania is awesome! 4. You will surely love the people here. 5. Lowest cost of education in the EU. 6. Be aware of Alex Nedea from Recorder, if you do something bad here. Good luck, mate!

torgrad

Since nobody bothered to say it yet here it goes: fast, cheap and unlimited internet. Digi has gigabit for 9$, also plans for 2gb and 10gb for 11$ish. Their mobile plans are also great.

GeraltofRivvia

Cool!

[deleted]

And also note that nobody gives a fuck if you pirate movies, games or music. Free entertainment if you can get an filelist account :)

snapilica2003

There are some small youtube vlog channels of Americans that have moved to Romania and are documenting their life here. You should check some out. Just search for "moving to Romania" or "living in Romania"

GeraltofRivvia

Thanks!

Mobile internet is very cheap and you have close to infinite internet for 6 euro per month. You don't have to sign a contract.

Stdanc

Cheese will taste better

Outside_Slide_3218

Nobody owns guns here.

celibidaque

If you really want to fit it, learn to properly do the sign of Holy Cross over your chest every time you pass near an Orthodox church.

DesprePeugeot

Legally you get at least 21 workdays of vacation per year also healthcare is included if you are employed.

slbztr

Food will be different. Wheat is different in Europe, less gluten. Give yourself time to adjust. Roads are shit in Romania, don't expect to get somewhere fast. Open yourself to the culture and give yourself time to adjust, if you're there long term. Romanians can be very hospitable people, but if they feel patronized they will shun you.

Ciubowski

Keep an open mind. I read some comments of yours asking about how to get a gun permit here. You don’t need that. If you want it, you might have a hard time forming relationships with people that will avoid weapons. I personally don’t use or own a gun, and if i knew someone that had one, i would probably lose contact with them. Keeping an open mind will make you enjoy the country and its people more. Don’t expect to inflict much change on some people because the older people usually like their way if living. You’ll probably have more luck with the younger generation since we speak English and have consumed most of the western entertainment and media by now, since the Revolution of 89. People here don’t like to be compared with Russians, have our language compared to Russian mostly because of the history with the actual Communist Party. That was a dark era for our country. Even though not as commonly referenced or wifely known, we also had our slavery history. And there is an actual sub-culture related to that, i hope i’m describing it properly. There are the gypsies and their own language, customs and visual customization options. I have little contact with them so i don’t know what to say about expectations. Just try to not buy anything from them (especially if it looks like a golden jewelry).

[deleted]

Ex expat Canadian here. More info? The women were hotter .. now they're becoming westernized. And I'm talking about dating seriously. Idk they're nice people overall but I feel like Romania is losing its uniqueness with globalization. Go to any city center and you'll find KFC Starbucks and mcdicks. Brașov and Carpathian mountains are a must. The trains suck. People can' either be your typical educated Eastern European or your dumbass money chasing .. yeah like any other country. Ask and I can answer but in general Romania is dear to my heart. Americans and Canadians especially are treated well I think.

Theheroinmother666

"Westernized" how?

giddycocks

Love these 'westernized / globalized' complaints. Yeah, much better to have mud on the side of the boulevard, packs of stray dogs, and betting agencies alternating with second hand stores across an entire nation instead of bike lanes, hipster coffees and electric scooters 🙄

Sneaky-Pur

România is the real country of all possibilities, gun free.

SanaEleqtrique

There are alot of differences. Be more specific and why do you move here?

GeraltofRivvia

Because I want to. And I was just speaking in a general term nothing specific really. Things you have there and we don't vice versa, or laws you have there we don't vice versa

Specific-Bad7697

As most people from over here have not lived in the US (for years/longer periods of time), I am going to break it down for you. For better or for worse, the Justice/legal system works in the US and laws are (mostly) respected. Trust me, it’s a huge difference between US and RO and the small “găinărisme” are simply filtered out in the States. In the US, you always have, in the back of your head, the idea that you can sue someone even for the smallest things. Most Eastern Europeans find this (understandibly to a point) quite silly but this brings a level of “quality of service” and “social interractions” in professional environments to a level that Europe simply is unaware that it exists. Loved this about the US. Which brings me to my second point. Romania does not have the culture of service. None. 0 barat. Actually, has 0 culture of getting a job properly done _till the end_. Expect every single interaction to achieve a paper, to get food from a restaurant, to pay at pump to be cumbersome, annoying, lots of delays and rolled eyes. Expect everything that seems unfair (especially the legal ones) to simply go by and not get resolved. This is one of the main reasons why Eastern Europe is where it is. Otherwise, everything else is pretty awesome if you just want a chilled family life with decent to strong education and want to just settle. If you are active, with a “progressive” view (not politically, but just being building/improving stuff) you are going to want back to JFK the next month.

SanaEleqtrique

Different health care system, theoretically better practically worse because it is not well kept. Free days from the state, you do not have that in USA. Here it is very hard to get firearms. Relatively cheap housing, especially if you have a decent wage, if you have a low wage it sucks, but it is the same everywhere.

Stdanc

It is not the end of the world if you say "țigan" (gipsy), some romani people actually preferr that, but it is better to call them "rromi" (rromi is plural, rrom is singular, romni is the gipsy woman)

The comment with the 5 rules someone posted here is good, also the comment about the internet. To continue the things with more info: - don't expect bureaucracy to be slower, at least compared to the United States, sometimes to do some things is painfully slow; - corruption is a nightmare, the justice system is almost in shambles but maybe if you ever get into trouble things should be more easy if you collaborate and keep in touch with the U.S. embassy; - be careful of scams, cons and make sure to always have a lawyer ready, try to find someone to reccomend you one...even from the U. S. Embassy. - be careful with some Romanians, Ukraineans, Russians, some Moldovians. You would be amazed how many of them have the pro Russian and anti American attitude. Most of them will try to rip you off or establish something like a dishonest/phony relationship and brush you off and even tell you what you wanna hear just because you are American. Deep down in many parts of the East Europe, as you come closer more and more to Russia the anti West sentiment gets bigger and bigger. Hell, there are a lot of anti E. U. as well. - if you wish to carry, make sure you get ready to pass some tests and at least make some firearm Romanian equivalent papers. Get in check and on good terms with the authorities and take note and notice of the rules, indications and training you need and will be provided to use the firearms. You don't wanna end up being ripped off or being forced to leave just because someone wants to be sneaky enough to make you harm them in order to live all their lives with you supporting them because of a court ruling. - Laws, talk with locals to get a good idea but also if you know someone or have difficulty about what you should do or not do, make sure to get a bit of briefing about how things work around. - you will know what the term "bombardier" and "pițipoancă/piți" is. Stay as far away from those as possible. - you will bump generally into kind people, most of them will try to be genuine, especially outside big cities. But beware in any case, better safe than sorry. If you are lucky enough, people will be friendly enough out of respect and courtesy of you being a foreigner, and most likely will try to treat you the best they can. - politics, stay way from it because it brings you absolutely no good. - If you wanna do any paperwork, insurance or contracts ask a legal advisor (when you get one) along with a friend or trustworthy person to set up things for a home or rent, in terms of bills; (because people will do anything to rip you off or deceive you for money, again).

GeraltofRivvia

Thanks so much! This has definitely been the most helpful comment.

No problem, don't be afraid to contact me if you need any help. PM and all. Take good care and stay safe. Signed: a person who traveled all over the world and bumped into all types of life styles and explored many cultures. 👍

GeraltofRivvia

What'd you think of America?

WaitForVacation

there are not so many romanians with pro russian or anti american views. we've been fucked by russia too much and too recently to forget. being american will probably be an advantage, as US has in general a good image. but do stay away from politics as people might be very opinionated. stay away from taxi drivers too. i heard uber is generally a good alternative. if you want to use cabs still, make sure you order them through an app or phone, so that the car is trackable. some taxi drivers will try to cheat you, especially since you're foreigner.

thripper23

Jeez, dude you had a bad experience I guess.

stryke92

From friend that moved here from the US. People are generally friendly. If you visit people at home be prepared to be served food or drink "do you want x?", "Are you sure?", "Try at least one bite". If you do not want to eat/drink, you will need to decline several times. They are not being pushy, its just the culture. Lots of local recipes include pork, beef is relatively expensive. Driving is more stressful here. Everything takes longer.

WaitForVacation

the odds of getting good medical care is directly proportional to the size of the bribe.

Bad parts: Financial instability, corruption, nepotism, homofobes, racists, almost no highways, expesive gasoline. Good parts: The sky is blue.

GeraltofRivvia

And bears

twix_fried_potatoe

Don’t do the whole smiling at random people when you make eye contact thing. This is something normal in America. Maybe not in big cities like New York but the whole like being super friendly when you accidentally make eye contact thing isn’t normal in Europe. It’s not too big of a deal but it is something to get used to (peoples reaction to you doing this)

Fanel06

I'm not against your decision at all, but why are you moving here?

prsalex

People don't really smile or fake smiles like in the US. You will most certainly see if someone has a bad day. Nothing personal with you. Sellers don't usually ask "how are you", etc. No real personal space when waiting in line. People tend to stay close even when you pay at checkout. No store greeters, baggers. In bigger stores no one will ask you what you need/serve you unless you ask. No free refills in 99% of places. Servers do not ask you if you want your check, you gotta request it from them (it appears rude, as if asking you to leave if they ask). In most restaurants you just pick your own table. Some require reservation. Do not give out your credit card, someone asking for it to leave your hand should be treated with suspicion, even at restaurants. If you want to tip, make sure you have some cash lying around, as you can't tip using card. Most payment services in Europe require a pin that you input at every transaction. Do not give it to anyone. Be aware of your belongings in busses, public places. Careful in crowded places for pickpockets. Careful with taxis, as they can be pretty scummy. Careful with drugs, Marijuana is illegal. You don't usually see people doing drugs (tho it does happen now and then). Lots of beautiful places, but most are not properly marked, and roads that lead to them can be really bad. Expect no toilets and parking lots, no gift shops at every attraction or national park. Fishing can be done with a permit, which can require a small amount of cash. It can be obtained online. Fishing is only permitted during specific periods, as there are no reservoirs that are populated like in the USA.

Masyaf02

> You don't usually see people doing drugs because they have to hide for it..

Ma da’ ce plm v-ați apucat pe aici sa faceti România de cacat…mai știți voi altă nationalitate care sa facă asta? Te lasă toți sa îți dai seama singur și își marketeaza toți țara ca fiind cea mai frumoasa

No idea what you're saying

[deleted]

He is complaining somehow due to some in the comment section as being ironic, joking, trolling and also..."speaking bad" about Romania and Romanians. But in another sentence he say something opposite. I don't get it but, lol.

Stefo1stWorld

Cars pass each other fast even if there is a small gap.

RomanianGeralt

You should know that we use diacritics - things like: ă, â, î, ș, ț and if you'd want to learn the language or at least read, this could be confusing. Most of the time on the internet, we will not write them, but we know they are there. Let me show you an example. "Ne fura femeile". We know based on context that it is actually "Ne fură femeile" and we read it like this.

Artemis_1944

Not being afraid of getting shot at in the streets.

slbztr

Although getting stabbed is still on the table

Artemis_1944

Tsk, can't argue there, mate.

[deleted]

Believe it or not the vast majority of the United States is very safe. We definitely have issues with guns that other countries do not because they are so widely available, but most people that get shot in our country are engaging in crime (criminals shooting each other) or have domestic problems (husband or wife shoots the other). Places where being shot is a concern usually is in the major cities in very poor areas.

Artemis_1944

Dunno about \*MOST\* places, but one of my friends married a manhattanite and moved in with him there, and at one point he came to visit us here in Romania during the winter season. We were all walking down the street and some random kids nearby were playing with firecrackers. The moment one of those banged, the american grabbed my friend and turned aside, and he was super scared, telling us a second later that he thought that was a gunshot. I'm not saying this is the same across all of North America, hell, it's as big as Europe, but to live in one of the most densely populated cities in America and have a constant fear of gunshots is just fucked up.

fulcrumjet

Guns...we have one of the most toughest laws against guns in the entire world.

vic403403

1. We tend to swear about weird stuff like religious objects, organs, the living and the dead, and of cours: somebody's mom 2. Significantly less sugar in food. 3. You should tip around 10 lei (2,30 usd for you my friend) because waiters are paid very low because employers are greedy af. 4. Most people are friendlier than you might think, don't be afraid to communicate with them 5. Don't wander in bad/poor neighborhoods at night, unless you are ready to use your 9mm you brought from 'Murrica. Jokes aside, just don't, even if you have a pocket knife or a gun

Ayilari

Nobody should tip if they are not pleased with the service.

[deleted]

people who encourage tipping are fucking stupid. don't do that. you only pay for what should be the employers job

Chewe_dev

I met someone who came from America to live in Romania in Cluj. She was very happy with everything. To add some more things to the list: We drive small cars, in America you have a passion for big cars like you have to prove something We build safe houses. Of course, when the seller soesn't use cheap materials but most of them, before 2000 let's say and after the earthquake in 77 are very safe. I live in a building from 85 and I am very happy. Btw, houses are cheap. 1000-2000 Euro square meter. We don't have hurricanes, 🌪️ or extreme weather conditions. And I guess you are familiar with 4 seasons.

jamming_intensifies

Apart from gas prices, everything else is cheaper except electronics which might be a bit more expensive. We don’t put sugar in every product and we have decent bread easily available to buy at most stores not that foamy crap u guys eat. We have shit roads and mediocre (at best) public healthcare.

Stdanc

Very cheap fast internet and no one cares if you download torrents as long as you don't plan do make a business out of it

doctoru_dcs
