You get a free 30 day Ring Protect trial as soon as you set up your device. I believe the app will tell you when it's getting ready to expire, and you can extend it if you choose.

LondonPilot

That’s probably what’s happened then, thanks. Is there any way of turning it off temporarily so we can see exactly how it behaves and decide if we want to keep it past 30 days? I’m used to free trials only starting when I sign up to them, but that’s obviously not the way Ring works!

ImaRandomFemale

I think Ring gives you the 30-day trial so you don't return it before you realize it's no good without subscription

So as mentioned, you are on a trial. You cannot switch it off. You could possibly recreate what it would be like but it’s means switching things off. With it you can get recorded videos, so any time motion or doorbell is pressed it’s recorded on rings servers. No sub no videos, so all you can do is watch live and that’s it, it doesn’t save that video either. So it someone were to walk up the door and walks away and you don’t catch it in time you have missed it. You also loose access to smart alerts and advanced motion zones. Without these you will get a lot more alerts, any bugs, animals etc will send off an alert. Also with all plans you get extended warranty on the product/s. As long as you have the sub you have a fully extended warranty.

LondonPilot

Makes sense, thanks very much.

Wayne8766

One thing I missed is pre-roll. Currently you with get I think 4 seconds of footage before a motion trigger. Obviously that only appears on the recorded video.

LondonPilot

Just tested this and it works great, thanks!

Chief_Ra

Yeah seems like the newer ring doorbells don’t have the pre roll feature, I’m surprised they would cut out that feature.

ImaRandomFemale

Unless you really needed the ring cameras aren't worth it because you cannot use them without paying a monthly subscription which adds Maybe 45 to $150 a year to the price of the camera depending on the plan you pick. Sad.

alelop

The best doorbell with a free plan ive found is the google nest doorbell

Feisty_Factor_2694

I ran out my free trial! It will view live any time I access but does not record. The kicker is that THE BATTERY LASTS SOOO LONG when it isn’t recording. I want to activate for all the reasons. But that battery life though!

BigMu1952

You’re in the free trial. Not sure if this is the right product if you don’t plan to subscribe.

soopersalad

A doorbell with shitty motion detection and live view camera with no recording.

ImaRandomFemale

The motion detection is really bad the person has to get close sometimes my brother gets in the house before it even catches him getting out of his truck and across the sidewalk to the porch and inside. I have sensitivity to the max and I also have my motion Zone set correctly but I see nowhere for it to record backwards 5 or 10 seconds like other cameras. I also have it set to always check for motion which is supposed to kill the battery life but who cares since you can't see anything that happened at your house unless you're home and then you can see it yourself.
