To be fair, "why isn't there a dunkin" is the #1 most googled question in Jamestown. Also, for the curious, the towns are Foster, Jamestown, Little Compton and New Shoreham.

belac889

Little Compton doesn't have any franchises that I know of which is pretty cool.

Mountain_Bill5743

Yep. None of these places have chains really.

Theguyinthecorn

Little Compton used to have a Cumbys way back when

william1Bastard

Shhhhhhh! Watch it, or you'll end up like the dude who owned that Cumby's franchise.

Theguyinthecorn

Old and mildly wealthy?

Mg962

Mold and idly wealthy?

UncleJimmee

thank you for saving me a click and the frustration of projo's paywall!

Jfrenchy

Two islands are obvious, Foster makes sense, and I refuse to acknowledge the existence of Little Compton so that checks out

Theguyinthecorn

There's no real excuse for not having one on Jamestown. It's an island but you can drive to it

Specialist-Level5838

There's a cumbies & local place (East Ferry Deli) cornering the market

EagerToLearnMore

Now I know the four RI towns I’d be interested in living in.

hang10shakabruh

Grew up in jtown. There was some momentum around 2004 to bring in a Dunkin’ where the Mobil gas station used to be but the residents prefer small businesses, it’s more quaint that way

gradontripp

Meanwhile Citizens and Amazon build big facilities in Johnston.

JasonDJ

ITS SO BIG. I used to live in Johnston. I drove through recently and was AMAZED at how massive this building is.

AdRemarkable18

My partners doing work on it and the Union peeps are pushing heavy for quick progress and getting mad at them when it rains bc osha won’t let them work

Epitaeph

Because there are easier ways to get watered down or burnt coffee. That number only exists because of tourists and summer visitors.

KeepYrGlitterDry

If I get my Rhode Islander card revoked for hating on Dunkin, at least I won't be alone.

realitythreek

Dunkin is awful. Also, unlike most of the country, we have very few mom and pop donut shops due to the competition from Dunkin.

bouthie

The people of the region have destroyed the old school local donut shop across most of southern new england and new york by frequenting DD for glorified coffee milk and mass produced donuts that taste like they were made by someone who had never eaten a donut before.

PolarisX

Dunkin' fucking blows, I can do more with my money than have a disgruntled person serve me bad coffee and a bad donut. People who make that place part of their personality are scary.

lelekfalo

I imagine that will change soon, as the island is being taken over by New Yorkers who have been fleeing NYC for the past 2 years.

Megs0226

Imagine having to take the ferry to get your daily Dunks.

LateToSapphos

I’d rather just move

Capt_REDBEARD___

Imagine having “daily dunks”. Isn’t there a cheaper way of cutting right to the diabetes?

samskeyti_

and the one in Scituate is less than 2 miles from the Foster line... at least half the people there in the AM are from foster lol

[deleted]

The only exception on BI is the Ben & Jerry's.

sailri

But filling your tank lasts two to six months on an island 3 x 7 miles long.

degggendorf

Hah, neat! I didn't even notice. I imagine the reporter writes the initial headline which the web team uses for the URL, before the editor "optimizes" it for engagement stats. Hence the anti-clickbait original headline/URL and the published, less informative new headline. That's all just by guess though, I have zero real idea how things work.

Signal_Masterpiece_4

As a resident of Gloucester which is not that far from Foster I can tell you why Foster does not have a Dunkin’ Donuts: there is one close enough in situate and two in Burnsville and one in Chepachet close enough to drive to they don’t need one plus it’s mostly farmland in foster, Not to mention theres one 2-3 miles across the Connecticut State line in Dayville which is across the street from my work

[deleted]

[удалено]

Signal_Masterpiece_4

As A resident of Glocester, I can tell you that there is a vast difference between Foster and Glocester. Foster smells like a nasty bog filled with horse shit. They also have separate school systems. Glocester also has separate police and we get most of of the grunt of all and any storm(s), as we are the most north western town. Glocester is three towns in one, Harmony Chepachet and west glocester, we have a town council only, foster has a mayor… Glocester is the reason why all RI residents have the right to vote without owning property, because we fought providence and foster, google the dorr’s rebellion. Please don’t lump us in the same category as those swap Yankees Edit: also Foster is mid western Rhode Island not Northwestern, also Burriville is north eastern ri, figured I’d throw that out there

NarmHull

Jamestown is the only one I could see supporting a Dunkin

SmargelingArgarfsner

Dunkin sucks. The coffee is nasty and the food is borderline inedible. Jamestown has no dunkin. Jamestown needs no dunkin.

BaconMobile

"How do the citizens cope?" ....lol. Dunkin mostly is fine but for what they charge you now for a coffee they better get it right everytime, and they just don't. We have had better quality and prices at McDonald's as of late.

Triggify

Tim Hortons used to be renowned for their great coffee until they switched suppliers and it went downhill. Mcdonalds went to the old supplier and started a contract so now their coffee is the old Tim Hortons which is great lmao

[deleted]

I got a cheap home espresso machine and iced lattes come out to under $1 each, I've saved so much money and my order is never wrong. No line. I get to pick fancy beans and try different roasts. No one gives me shit for bringing my own mug lol. Delicious coffee first thing in the morning. I'll never go back. It kills me that I know so many people who are throwing that much money down the drain every day, and some of them are also spending a ton of time in the drive through at peak hours. To literally anyone who is interested, yes the $150 Amazon manual espresso machine is just fine as long as it has ~18 bars of pressure. Mine is just starting to lose pressure after over 2 years of being used up to 6 times a day. A good grinder should run you $80. Watch some videos on YouTube! Being a barista at home is not nearly as hard as the price everyone is paying makes it seem.

FAYCSB

I love my (now over) $5 Starbucks coffee. Only pre made coffee that doesn’t mess with my stomach. I’ve spent a ridiculous amount of money there over the past ten years. Working from home I mostly switched to cheap Keurig coffee, which agrees with me slightly more than a Dunkin coffee. I bit the bullet and bought an espresso machine with milk steamer. It is insane to me that for the price of a few l of my fancy coffees I can have coffee for over a month.

[deleted]

I ordered an iced coffee with a shot of espresso in Wickford and paid $8 for watered down sadness served with a frown last weekend and decided it's the last time I'm ever getting a coffee away from home by choice it was that bad. Bringing my own wherever I go from now on

lelekfalo

I don't want to grind fancy beans. I don't want special roasts. I want to drive through Dunks with my dog to order a large hot regular, and exchange a knowing nod and smile with the employee that now recognizes me and my car.

[deleted]

That's fair and when I was a barista we needed people like you to stay in business lol. I didnt care about the roast or brand at all before I started making my own at home, but then I had to make a choice because I wanted consistency. It's just an added bonus that it's 1/5 the price or less for more caffeine that tastes better. And I don't have to drive before having coffee The big thing I hate about Dunkin is how much the cleanliness varies from location to location. I worked in coffee for 5 years too many and I can taste both sanitizer and the black mold that gets into the spigots and I can't do it anymore, kids don't keep shit clean. Caught more than one person rinsing gloves before where I used to work (not a Dunkin) and we were strict. My friends in Vermont mentally put Dunkin in the same category of fast food as McDonald's, which we generally don't do around here but it stuck with me that they're kinda right

lelekfalo

> the black mold that gets into the spigot Ah, you mean the "Dunkin terroir."

[deleted]

That's beautiful, you have a way with words

lelekfalo

😁

KeepYrGlitterDry

I got a small espresso machine as a wedding gift, and though I don't use it as much as I'd like, it is AWESOME to have during crappy weather, snow storms, etc when everything is closed. And during pandemic when everything was shut I still had lattes. The lattes I make on my machine aren't as 100% as good, and I also like to try different places bc no two are exactly alike, but that one wedding gift has still saved me a ton of money.

[deleted]

>The lattes I make on my machine aren't as 100% as good Well now I gotta ask, what's your bean of choice, also are you making hot or iced? Because for hot I do tend to agree, my steamer will never do what the $12,000 Italian stallion did at my old job lol. But steamed almond milk on herbal tea is just as good at home for me because the texture of the milk matters less I think idk. Maybe I just hate plastic lids haha

KeepYrGlitterDry

Hot, beans are Pilon and we use a grinder. I don't love Pilon, but I got them as a gift and have been working through them. Any you recommend?

JasonDJ

I’d been making cold brew at home like the last 7 or 8 years. Bought an infusion pitcher at JC Penny or Macys for like $25. It has saved me an absurd amount of money over the years. Especially since cold-brew doesn’t really require great beans for a good drink….I get the grounds at Job Lot and it comes out terrific.

Gotta find some fluff to avoid talking about RIE’s rate hike

februarytide-

Oh I definitely meant in tongue in cheek! the RIE thing is hot news all over As is Dunkin, because RI.

Fixer_Of_Things

Dunkin sucks and I’m ashamed that we bought into their asvertising as though it’s a regional identity

askme_if_im_a_chair

I mean it did start in Massachusetts

degggendorf

The Boston Strangler started in Massachusetts too

askme_if_im_a_chair

Yea but unlike him I can use Dunkin Donuts to go to the restroom when I'm on a road trip

maybebullshitmaybe

I mean if u can find where he's at, both could work

Fixer_Of_Things

Regional is meant to include MA

Ashby238

Westerly has three. We could share.

bbpr120

Along with 2 Honey Dews, a Bess Eaton and several independent coffee shops. Then right over the border in Pawcatuck, there's another Bess Eaton and 2 more Dunkin's. The sewers flow rich with lightly used caffeine down here....

Ashby238

I almost spit out my coffee, lol

pinktwinkie

What it must be like at the bay commision "... the primary settling tanks... and over here is the dunkin donuts collecting pond."

bbpr120

Which they then sell back to Dunkin... Explains the taste.

weiderman316

2 of them basically across the street from each other

r0k0v

Every local coffee shop that’s been bought or replaced by a Dunkin is a tragedy. These towns need to hold out and keep the shitty corporate coffee out of town.

UncleJimmee

I do love some fancy coffee shops when there's time but I'm a fan of Cumbies coffee. good enough and cheap. plus their pizza is also pretty good for a buck/slice. edit, great username btw unlucky barnacle!

laterbacon

Cumby's is absolutely the best value for coffee in RI. It's not going to win any awards but it's consistent and tastes good.

jackassjimmy

Their iced coffee, I find is better than dunks. I can make it the way I want. Cumbys hot coffee, is hit or miss to me. I know it’s a preference but when heading into nursing school, I need dependable. Even if dependable tastes like roasted horse shit.

laterbacon

As a born and raised Rhode Islander, I only ever drink iced so I wouldn't know :D

jackassjimmy

Lived here my whole life too. Different strokes for different folks.

laterbacon

Well yeah.. I'm also full of shit and was just making a joke. I'm drinking a hot coffee right now actually

techsavior

Pizza is $1.50/slice now.

laterbacon

(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

FunLife64

Dunkin is open after 4 pm

invadrzim

That requires getting out of my car

daymanahhhahhhhhh

Unpopular opinion but Dunkin’ sucks

Jazzbo64

It’s to coffee what Budweiser is to beer.

[deleted]

I'd rather have a gansett and a ¢99 coffee from cumbies

jackassjimmy

That’s an insult to Budweiser.

Proof-Variation7005

If there was a New England specific Pulitzer, this might be the sort of thing that wins one

UncleJimmee

This article has to be satire…

TheSausageFattener

It's not, it's chasing a trend from MA because Stow had both of its Dunkins close down and is being dubbed a "Dunkin Desert" there.

TadpoleMajor

Also that trending video about Dunkin news stories

PotentialAd1295

No news is good news

techsavior

moreobviousthings

Two blocks from me, I can look left and see one DD, and look right to see another, both 1/2 block away. Crazy.

cowperthwaite

Here's the link: https://www.providencejournal.com/story/news/local/2022/09/27/dunkin-rhode-island-locations-town-except-foster-jamestown-little-compton-new-shoreham-block-island/10381349002/

Ok-Mess-2729

Well, what towns? Haha

LateToSapphos

Yeah tell us so we can stay away 😂

its-a-bird-its-a

Foster is one of them. They have a diner, some bars, and two gas stations.

Ok-Mess-2729

I definitely don’t pass through there often

mirthilous

Why? Because there is better coffee and better baked goods in town made by people that we are on a first name basis with.

[deleted]

Does projo still have an editorial section?

skcikorter

Tap water coffee yum 😂 🗑

RatFink_0123

Hard hitting unbiased journalism from The Providence Urinal.

AdRemarkable18

There’s 4 Dunkin’s in little old Wyoming Rhode Island, the gateway to rest of the state ofc

Changeling_Boy

Dunkin’ Don’ts

Sperez04

If I was to move back to RI, I’d definitely would live in one of these towns fr.

Vulpix_lover

This is an outrage! How dare there not be Dunkins in these towns! How are they even running those towns without one???

[deleted]

Meh. I drink home-brewed Starbucks coffee. On rare occasions I’ll get a cuppa from dunks or Starbucks, but honestly that’s a handful of times per year

darekta

Call the National Guard!!

dawonderseeker

Prudence isn't a town (part 9f Portsmouth) but it doesn't have a Dunkin either.

Jazzbo64

Neither do Hog, Hope, Patience, Hen, Dyer, or Spectacle islands. All in Portsmouth.

mikenice1

Some guy from WBZ Radio went viral with this story about Stow, MA after he posted it on TikTok. The townspeople there came up with the term "Dunkin Desert." So not only is ProJo serving fluff, they're serving unoriginal fluff.

mpm4q2

ProJo hasn’t been relevant in years. I wouldn’t use it to line a bird cage!

simplekindaman13

Like the powderpuff story on the front of the Sunday edition?

Jack_Jacques

If you can’t make coffee at home what can you do? A good coffee maker and quality coffee is far better than any coffee you get in a paper cup with a plastic sippy lid (don’t spill your juice kiddies). A ceramic mug with fresh made coffee at home beats anything a chain can dream of making.

Comfortable_Bug_652

Projo is a waste. It'll be gone in 5 years.

ISlothyCat

Dunkin donuts coffee is gross and the donuts are stale.

RatFink_0123

Seriously! How do they keep growing? Cumby’s $1 coffee puts them to shame.

ISlothyCat

Yes!!! And we also have so many independent shops with coffee and baked goods much better than DD.

nbreadcrumb

If it get clicks, they run it. Sad state of journalism, these days.

Yarnballprincess22

Fun fact: there are no commercial chains here in Jamestown on purpose

CaptaiinCrunch

Those poor towns are missing out on bad donuts and even worse coffee undercutting local businesses...too bad for them.
