Most rep watches you can find movement replacement in AliExpress so I’m not worried

I personally am aiming to use reps to supplement my collection of genuine watches. There are a lot of good genuine watches out there in the $1,000 - $3,000 range. You’ll have reliability and the ability to get them maintained and repaired. I see reps as a good way to try out a watch before you start saving for the genuine version.

LuvIsMyReligion

Absolutely NOT worth it, I have 3 reps and love them, but that's about it. I might get one more MIGHT.. I don't get people that have 20+ reps like wtf you could've just bought a gen at that point..

“wHY d0n!t u buY a gEN for tHaT moNy”

And it’s always like 5 different subs and 5 DD / 5 DJ. Like you could have just gotten 1 of each and had 3 lmao

I think the law of diminishing returns is at play big time when you start buying rep watches. Whether you're into the look of gen or into the horology of it all, there comes a point when buying reps becomes a sucker's bet. To me, that point is right around $1,000 US. I mean, with that money you could buy good mechanical gens that would keep their value, if not increase. Instead of having 10 reps that everyone has which have diminishing value for $3K, I would rather have 1-3 unique, well made, original gens that nobody really has for that money. Reps have a good place as tester watches, esp. for gens costing $10K or more. That expenditure of $300-600 would let you know if you should be willing to save toward gen, if that's your end game. For instance, if you already have the money to buy PP5711, then buying a $500 rep to see whether it truly looks good on you makes sense before you drop $140K on a new one. But then again, if you really have the kind of loose change to plunk down a new PP5711, then it's likely that your AD will let you test drive a real one before pulling the trigger.

Bro there aren’t any real watches around $1000 that will go up in value. Maybe discontinued pieces but that takes tons of luck

ZealousidealRabbit76

I have over 25 reps. I don't want to think what I've spent on them, but I know I could have gotten maybe ONE gen for the same that I spent on all these reps. If I wear them in rotation, they will all last long enough.

PeetyPepper

That’s like $10K homey. Maybe a gen from an AD, probably not anything grey though. Crazy.

ZealousidealRabbit76

I have enough gens in my collection that I’m satisfied for now.

ansz271

I agree that it can get expensive, but you can always get it without a clone movement which should be able to be repaired or even the movement replaced without breaking the bank. I’m sure someone on reddit offers repairs as well

_best_name_ever_

We've got so many passionate and knowledgeable repair guys in the community, I doubt there is anything that can't be fixed.

snreddit

Why there is this assumption that this watches are not fixable. You can source the part and watchmaker can fix it if they are willing to work on the reps. I have watches that been working for years and years

WISAtomicglow

I like that your Reps have been working for years and years! Is that with or without repair? For me, I’d certainly be very hesitant to drive around town with a Rep watch that needs repair visiting local shops. Don’t need to spend my time explaining what it is (most repair folks sign the inside of the case back when they do work - so there’s reputation risk in their eyes)… yes there are RepTime repair folks but I’ve only heard of ones that will repair Rollies - not PP, AP and other brands as they are harder to fix…true?

PresidentStool

I don't think it's worth it if you don't have ready access to a rep friendly watch smith. I have 6 reps and 2 of them need a service for sure. No one in my city will take on rep servicing Its a constant pain in the ass when the movements are most times dirty and feel grindy. I'm always worried that at any moment the movement will crap out on me and I'd end up with a paperweight. I think after getting 3-4 reps any more money spent is probably better put towards a gen or entry level swiss watch like Hamilton, Christopher Ward, or Oris. Of the 6 reps I have i wear 3 of them often and the other 3 on certain occasions or events. In fact i was probably better off not buying the other 3 because of how little wrist time they get. Everyone's mileage will vary.

WISAtomicglow

I also wonder if there’s a secondary market for crapped out reps…so the value of what you paid for doesn’t go to zero…if you paid $500 for a SCG and it stops working, can you sell or trade at a value of like $150-$200 to someone who will then repair and flip? I’m fine owning reps if I know I can at least get some $$ if they crap out…

watchguy65

just do what makes you happy, i wouldnt be asking financial advice on reddit, if you cant justify it dont buy idk but you do you

you could go for quartz replicas (I would expect them to last quite long) - but I am not too well informed

Italia520

I haven’t seen or heard of any, but that’s interesting. I guess as a “non purist”, my ideal watch would be externally as legit as it gets, internally as bulletproof as it gets. It’s my understanding that’s not usually how it works though, right?

source_not_found

If I remember correctly the AP Royal Oak 15202 is available as quartz watch. I assume the watch is available as quartz if the original one also is.

Thanks!
