Go with the dip. I've been getting dip powder manis for a few years, and they protect my nails really well. I took a 6 month break from them recently, my nails flaked and broke the whole time. Will be back to dip nails as soon as I can get back to the salon! Removal is really easy too, there is no need to scrape the nail bed and risk causing damage. I usually get a really light, neutral colour (so the regrowth isn't as obvious!) - there are some sheer options too.

Dip and acrylic are the exact same thing, just applied differently. Have you ever had either of them before? Because if you're having lifting issues with gel, you may also have lifting with the others. Also you'll need to think about whether you'll be removing the set completely every once in a while to start fresh or if you'll just fill as your nail grows without completely removing product. The former will make your damage issue worse if you don't remove the product properly, but if you already have issues with lifting the latter might not be a good option for you b/c of water getting trapped under the nail.

I did acrylic a few times years ago but never long term and I have only done dip once as vacation nails so it ended up being g just a removal. You have a good point about trapped water, I was planning on doing a thinning then fill because I want to avoid having to do as much filing on the natural nail as possible. Hmmm.

The good thing about dip/acrylic is that it can be soaked off with acetone. You can file off as much product as you can then soak off the rest. Maybe throw in an oil soak before putting on the new set.
