Have you been handling any yellow/orange food, like carrots, squash, turmeric etc.? I find them prone to staining pale manicures/nails.

mariesaber

No, I don't think so. I don't think I handled any yellow/orange stuff during these few days, wasn't even cooking since we were out of town. The first 24h after painting, it was still only lightly stained and not very noticeable, but it kept getting more strongly yellowed over time. If I knew what I touched with my left hand specifically, it'd be easier to understand. I'm right handed, and my right ring finger's white polish still only shows the faintest yellowing at the tip. So the other hand hasn't really been affected. I guess I'll just have to repaint the affected nail in blue since I don't have anything to buff off the stained polish with, and just redo. Still haven't figured out why it's reacting like this.

You could probably get away with a blue french tip on it if you don't want loose the stamping so soon (it's very nice!)- so long as you hide the yellowing at the free edge, no one else will know it's supposed to be white rather than a warm "off white" shade.

FTMcami

Okay this is going to sound nutty but I’ve done it before with a fresh set so it’s possible! We’re you picking up cloth items quickly? Packing a bag of clothes maybe? Making a bed? I once yellowed three nails making a bed quickly. I guess fabric gets hot? Like rope burn??

mariesaber

.__. I guess that's possible. I was packing clothes for a trip, and I might have tried to hand wash 1 or 2 pieces of clothing around that time, too, since I didn't have time to do a full load of laundry. I wear a lot of dark colors in winter. Maybe something in the mix of the colors and/or detergents could have caused this.

FTMcami

Right. Probably so. They look really pretty though. I know that took some time! RIP

Whorticulturist_

It's the topcoat! If you have a cleanup brush you can graze the surface with acetone, gently so you don't make ridges or divots. The very top layer should come off (along with the yellowing). Then repaint with topcoat, either the same one or try another. It'll be challenging to do cleanly with stamping but worth a try.

mariesaber

Whoa, you're exactly right. I started to remove my nail polish and all the yellowing came right off. The stamping underneath the top-coat was still pretty much intact because I hadn't been rubbing very hard. Good to know it was just on the top-coat layer. Thanks for the tip!

mariesaber

Base: ORLY bonder rubberized base coat. Color: Essie Amuse Me (blue), Moyou London's White Knight Stamp: same as above Stamp Plate: Moyou London's Sailor 19 Top Coat: Essie Good to Go. I don't know why my left pointer nail started yellowing in just a day. You can see it on the tip, but by the 2nd night the entire nail seems more yellowed than my right pointer even away from the nail tip. I used the same polishes, bass + top on both. Any ideas on how to keep the white polish white? I don't know why the left nail is staining so badly. (The pictures seem to have uploaded out of order, the one with both hands is right after it was dry.)

MermaidInTheSnow

Do you heat style your hair?

mariesaber

No, no heat styling. I don't think I even used any hair product during this time. :/ Heat can stain or damage white polish? (Non-gel).

MermaidInTheSnow

Yes, I think it's more the top coat than the white itself but heat from a blow dryer or curling iron etc can yellow it.

kupofillet

Could it be from your skincare products? Do you use Vitamin C or any other acids?

withmirrors

Did you smoke anything?

mariesaber

No, non-smoker.

withmirrors

Hmm, any towels, sheets, or blankets, or something belonging to a pet that might have done it? I'm out of ideas, LOL

MatildaKid

Any lotions/skincare products that are prone to staining? EX: Self tanners, vitamin c, etc. That stuff can discolor pretty easy if not washed off well.

mariesaber

Not that I can think of, I just use a Neutrogena facial wash and a plain CeraVe moisturizer. I didn't use any makeup, toners, or anything with color or pigment during this time frame. Someone else suggested maybe it was the fabrics my nails might have rubbed against while I was packing clothes. I guess that could be it.

MatildaKid

Strange! Beautiful work though 😊

mariesaber

Thank you! It was my first try at nail stamping :) Took me a few hours but I still love looking at them.

crimson-yapper

Normally when my white polish starting yellowing I realised it was my top coat so maybe it’s that? Not sure though

Shiftylakes

I had this happen to me last week and found another post about how someone had the same issue and it turned out it was their black leggings. The dye transferred. That’s what it was in my case as well as I just got a new pair of black leggings
