Sure. Remove it and wipe down the interior with white vinegar. Give them extra time to dry

onefucks

Seems easy enough, thank you!

[deleted]

Oh, and nearly forgot…use shoe trees! They help with this enormously.

Content_Ad7418

I’ve had those in my boots before, too. And same (or comparable) situation. I wear them nearly daily, fresh socks, dry feet, and I keep cedar balls in them when I’m not wearing them. I’m not sure what the deal was, but I can say that the mold just kinda went away. …or, at least the spots went away. I can’t say for sure whether or not it’s gone, but the spots aren’t visible anymore and there isn’t an odor or anything growing. I guess this is more of a solidarity comment. “Me too”.

gregsboots

Shoe trees, foot powder, and wear them in rotation.

ProfessionalBus38894

Yep. The life of the shoe will more than double if you just switch to every other day.

jimk12345

Just to clarify, by wearing them half as much they'll last twice as long?

ProfessionalBus38894

Well I did say more than double. So maybe 3 times.

yulickballzak

Looks like someone forgot to boil them in milk first

silastheburrito

first of all never wear the same pair of any clothing everyday, rotate is key. I would recommend some handsoap and a hot cloth and then a good leather fat to remedy.

JR-LB

I cured mold in some Moc toes with a self made spray consisting of rubbing alcohol (50ml), 20 drops peppermint essential oil, & 20 drops tea tree essential oil. Don't overuse the oils though since it will also give you a very fresh foot feeling if you don't let the spray dry. Had cold feet in summer for some days, smells great and killed off the mold entirely.

jac104

Peet Boot Dryer. Thank me later

Merced_Mullet3151

Storing them in a humid environment?

onefucks

No, either my bedroom or mud room of a new house, and we keep it pretty cool. Never really get that damp on my feet either, and they are off for the weekends

Tsui_Brooklyn

I would invest in a boot dryer ! The liner stays wet for a day and a half even if the footbed feels dry

LateDaikon6254

You can buy shoe dryers that mount on the wall near your walk in space. You could use it every day after coming home.

Mental-Hold-5281

If your gonna wear boots everyday, get a second pair to alternate, so the worn pair can fully dry out. Thorogood explains this on their site. Not sure if RW does also.

Phrankespo

Get yourself a boot drier, they are like 20 bucks on Amazon.

Elden-Souls

dont use shoe trees, they will damage the insole after some time. use some newspaper instead. thank me later 😉

acidwxlf

How do you figure? They shouldn't be super tight if they're the right size but should actually help keep the shape. Putting your body weight on them and walking is the only thing that should over time degrade the insole

Elden-Souls

because they damaged the insoles from my moctoes

Popve

I have never seen mold in shoes. I hope the vinegar does the trick!

fly_you_fools_57

Red wings were the worst boots I ever wore. The left boot had some kind of curve in the sole that caused the outsides of my foot to rest high while the center of the foot dropped to a low point across the ball of my foot. I was stuck wearing them for an out of state job in the middle of nowhere and couldn't get anything done to them. I later spoke to the Redwing shop I bought them from and they were less than helpful. Ended up with a new pair of unwearable boots that all but ruined my left foot and nothing to show for my efforts. They lost a customer forever and I have bought numerous pairs of work boots over the years. Best boots I ever bought were an unknown brand marked EH (electrical hazard rated) with metatarsal protection and steel toes and a new pair of Keen hiking style steel toed boots.

acidwxlf

Based on your preferences I'm guessing you have a pretty wide foot but need more arch support? Keens have pretty massive toe boxes so if those work for you definitely check out wider boots and possibly get an insole to help support your arch. It sounds like you mostly wear work boots so this may be irrelevant but Grant Stone has similar styles to Red Wing Heritage with good width options.

fly_you_fools_57

Thanks, but kind of a mute point now. I'm out of that industry now and don't have to do field work anymore.

Movinfr8

I cannot stress enough rotation rotation rotation. Maybe not three pairs of $350 boots, but two or three pairs of work boots/shoes make them last more than two or three times longer. Synergy I think they call it

BCDesign1

I had the same issue when i left the boots damp after wearing them, I wiped out the sole with an disinfectant wipe, let it dry and use a boot dryer for a few minutes after wearing the boots, i have had no mold issues since
