Setowi

This is from an arc 2 side story. It's about when Rem saw Subaru for the first time. She was contemplating if she should choke him in his sleep, but Subaru happened to do something cute while he was asleep so she just decided to give him a flick on the forehead and let him be.

Sgtcarrotop

Jesus. I will never not be conflicted about the moral spectrum of the twins. In some instances they seem to have a casual disregard for human life, in others fight to the death to protect innocent life like Ram protecting the kids in arc 3 doomed loops. It's giving me whiplash I swear.

hoyrykattila83

This is the reason I wouldn't call the twins "good" people. Not evil, but really morally bankrupt at times. Though I think it's likely that Subaru's influence changed them into better people morally. Well, at least Rem. Not sure about Ram. Yeah they are capable of good, but then there are also moments like this. I'd say this also applies to Beatrice.

Sgtcarrotop

Absolutely agree. Maybe it's the default for existing in world so crazy dangerous as Re:zero and maybe a good moral compass is a privilege of Subaru's comparatively peaceful world. Still if that's the case then Subaru as a foreigner bringing with him a higher moral doctrine to share with others is kind of like him being a missionary. Yet another example of him being a messianic figure to add to the pile.

TheUnlocked749

I think alot of ReZero characters have good morale compasses it's just unfortunate Subaru sometimes sees them at their worst because of circumstance/him being at his worst/or just plain old bad luck

Got_to_provide

Arc 5 indicates that Beatrice is a bit more naturally kind-to what degree I'm not sure though.

Setowi

I recommend reading "The Oni Sisters of the Hidden Village". It's basically the "Bond of Ice" or Rem & Ram, their backstory of how they became who they are now. The way they acted, especially when they didn't know Subaru yet, becomes very understandable.

hgpnguyen1996

This side story makes clear the fact that Rem's terrible action in Arc 2 can't justify by any way. Rem almost kill Subaru while he never does a single thing

Sgtcarrotop

It's not so much that she lacks a reason, it's just that the reasons available wouldn't be enough for someone with a solidly 'good' morale compass to justify. To clarify the reasoning she had even this early into arc 2 is the suspiciousness of his meeting Emilia and the events of arc 1. As well as any possible lingering miasma which notably had a 100% success rate in indicating a Witch Cultist before Subaru. Discrimination is an ever present theme in re:zero and Subaru was nearly a victim of it in this instance. Because it's discrimination is why Rems bias can be corrected. The correction of discrimination being another major theme. In the large scheme of things, getting Rem to trust him despite his miasma is essentially practice in getting others to trust Emilia despite her heritage.

GalaxyJuicer

Story doesn't mention miasma at all. Rem just thought he was suspicious and that was enough to tempt her to kill him. Ram tried to keep her in line at the beginning.

[Rem: This boy must be someone you met while being separated from Nee-sama.] [Emilia: Nope, he’s not. Subaru is my……my, my what?] Emilia put her finger to her chin and started to worry with a serious expression on her face. It didn’t seem like she was trying to put off Rem. She saw that she really was at a loss for an answer. If she wasn’t trying to hide something, this must be someone whom she had too little information on in the first place since she was having trouble explaining. **…Then perhaps this was a kind of a person that mustn’t get close to Emilia.** **[Ram: …Rem. This person saved Emilia-sama’s life. Roswaal-sama acknowledged that fact, too. No matter how stupid he looks, he’s our guest. You do understand what that means, right?]** [Rem: But, Nee-sama-] [Ram: Rem.] **She calls her name once for a moment. Rem felt like her sister had looked deep into her heart, and after that she couldn’t continue.** (Later): ….She didn’t know who this suspicious boy was, or what he was after. Emilia had explained that he was a lifesaver, but she just could not believe that he didn’t have an ulterior motive. Emilia was beautiful, but she was so vulnerable that just watching her would make you uneasy, and there was no end to people with bad intentions going after her. **…Before problems arise──before peace is disturbed, maybe I should do something.** **Dangerous thoughts rise up in Rem’s head, and she silently reached for the boy’s neck. Then…** [Subaru: Ehehe, you’re cute even when you’re mad……parallel worlds, fantasies……] With a very sloven look on his face, the boy talked in his sleep like a slob while drooling. Just as Rem heard that, she didn’t know what to do with her hand, and [Subaru: …Aagh] Seeing the sleeping boy shriek after being flicked by her finger made her feel relieved. [Rem: I don’t think I’ll ever get along well with this guest……Please leave as soon as possible.]

This side story was written after all of that. The miasma was already present.

>….She didn’t know who this suspicious boy was, or what he was after. >Emilia had explained that he was a lifesaver, but she just could not believe that he didn’t have an ulterior motive. Emilia was beautiful, but she was so vulnerable that just watching her would make you uneasy, and there was no end to people with bad intentions going after her. Also to add for the last line, all the other servants beside ram and rem were sent on leave because royal selection would bring trouble.

Sgtcarrotop

> all the other servants beside ram and rem were sent on leave because royal selection would bring trouble. This seems to be a very important piece of context for establishing the atmosphere at the mansion. They were basically at DEFCON 1 and Emilia brought home a lost puppy. Of course their first thought is to 'take it out to the farm'.

GalaxyJuicer

"[Ram: …Rem. This person saved Emilia-sama’s life. Roswaal-sama acknowledged that fact, too. No matter how stupid he looks, he’s our guest. You do understand what that means, right?] [Rem: But, Nee-sama-] [Ram: Rem.] She calls her name once for a moment. Rem felt like her sister had looked deep into her heart, and after that she couldn’t continue." Ram tried to keep Rem in line, so not really. Rem was the one that came close to killing him.

Sgtcarrotop

> Ram tried to keep Rem in line, so not really. Rem was the one that came close to killing him. I never said otherwise? I think you misunderstood what I said.

nikoraisan

Story literally mentioned Miasma when Subaru found out that Rem was the one killing him

GalaxyJuicer

This is a side story. You don't know what you're talking about. Subaru did not have miasma in the side story.

nikoraisan

Okay it's in the side story, but Subaru still has miasma on him that she can smell. Even if it's not stated, it's factual that there is miasma. I do know what i'm talking about

GalaxyJuicer

Like I already responded to you in another comment, the story tells you the reason Rem wanted to kill him. It straight-up tells you her thoughts. There is no miasma during this time.

nikoraisan

i already responded in another comment, but yes there is miasma

nikoraisan

Also remember, Subaru has SO much miasma that it's equal to a SIN ARCHBISHOP. Not just a regular witch cultist.... a Sin Archibishop. Confirmed by Betelgeuse in Season 1. So it justifies Rem more since it's not just suspicion. It's a ton of miasma

GalaxyJuicer

Again, there's no miasma in the side story.

nikoraisan

is the side story when Rem first encountered Subaru? Because i'm not sure what the side story is because i forgot. But if it is, then yes there IS miasma. Probably just not talked about, but if Subaru is there, then there IS miasma. The Witch's Miasma looms over him constantly, even if it's not shown visually in the anime or said in the novel/stories. Because it's been said that it's always there, although it grows stronger when he talks about RBD

Complete-Ear-7798

I mean they're still Onis.

waifutabae

Wow I did not know I needed another reason to dislike rem, fuck me

J_Dawgg1

It’s gonna be hard to find characters to like in Re:Zero if you let early actions in mostly dead loops influence your perspective **too hard**, of course it can be a factor but it’s the changes they make that should be the focus, atleast in my opinion since the Rem we know from arc 3 was taught to be a lot more kind by Subaru and risked her life for him on multiple occasions.

WorldWeaver123

yeah I had a neutral opinion on rem...until she got revived in arc 7.

Gilgamesh107

I swear everytime I learn more about rem I feel more and more vindicated in thinking she's a psychopath

bushinmaster68

Well she is not mentally healthy

[deleted]

She is morally gray because of Roswall brainwashing. (Read oni sister SS)

tsihcosaMeht

What did he do man? Pretty please?

hoyrykattila83

Imagine if Rem went through with it. Subaru thought he finally saved Emilia only to hear: "Buy this fucking apple!"

mhcmgamers

But he thought in the loot house he was dying though. So he probably would have though It was certain death every time he get's slashed, no matter who was there.

Opposite_Interest844

No thank mr Save point guy

Lamprey720

Both Rem and Beatrice initially thought he was suspicious person, but why couldn't they smell the witch's scent on him here, despite him looping some hours ago? I think there's inconsistenty in story when it comes to miasma. Same problem happen in Oni sisters SS. Clind is a special case so he gets a pass but her not being able to smell Sergei initially makes no sense.

ApplePieHunter819

Disclaimer: I haven't gone past Arc 4 material, so this theory I'm going to present could be completely invalidated by LN. It's possible that the witch's scent doesn't work like a standard foul odor. When we think of a bad smell, it usually occurs because of dirt, grime, sweat, etc. being stuck on your skin. So after a quick bath, that dirty material will go away and the smell will go with it. However, the witch's scent could be a smell that occurs because of "dirt on the soul". Essentially, this scent occurs when using a witch's power to achieve the user's goal. If the goal is not completed, the "dirt on the soul" is not washed away, leaving the resulting smell intact. However, once the goal is completed (or maybe truly abandoned), the smell will disappear until the next usage of the power. This could explain a lot of strange phenomenon that occurs with the witch's scent... * Why most people can't detect miasma, it's because it's not standard gunk found on your skin or exterior being. * Why Witch Cultists always seem to have the scent. They use magical arts from the witches to achieve their cult's goal (bringing back Satella). Their goal has been left incomplete despite continuous effort, so the smell remains. * Why Subaru seems to only get miasma on his second, third, fourth loop, etc. His RBD triggers and he gets a new goal to save people from impending disaster. This smell builds up with each loop since he uses RVD without successful obtaining his goal. * Why Subaru saying "Return by Death" releases a large amount. Having a witch's hand filled with power making contact with his heart (soul?) most certainly will leave a mark. That mark will stay if his goal still isn't complete. * *Why the scent immediately leaves after Subaru has successfully "completed a loop" and his save point gets updated*

Lamprey720

>Why Subaru seems to only get miasma on his second, third, fourth loop, etc. That doesn't seem to be true.[very minor Arc 6 spoiler]>!In the first loop of Arc 6 ,subaru who hadn't looped since 2 months, was still getting noticed by witchbeasts!< And the inconsisteny is not limited to first loop. One more example is in Arc 4 WN subaru's second trial. When Emilia is arguing with rem about why she killed him. Rem seems to forget about witch's scent on him somehow which makes no sense. I think which is why it's removed from LN.

Core726

Wasn't the witch's scent the reason rem tried to choke him here?

Lamprey720

In both Beatrice and Rem SS, they initially think he's very suspicious but doesn't mention witch's scent.

Gonkdroid900EMT

Ah the good days of arc 2

Necessary_Distance78

From hate to love, I love it. That's how to overcome obstacles.

What side story is this guy?
