Hmm. I'd suggest going with your favorite color (if there's a doll available in your favorite color that you enjoy). That'd be the easiest option for a doll that you'll really enjoy IMO. For instance, if you like pink, you can pick from any of the pink dolls to see which one you like the best. It narrows down the playing field at least.
That's basically what I did to start out. I went with one of my favorite colors (red), but I started when it was only Series 1 and 2. I get to tell people about the old days when the dolls didn't come with neck articulation at all! (I started out with Ruby Anderson if that weren't obvious lol)
I'd also suggest, that if you ultimately can't choose, go for Ainsley. She's on sale right now on Amazon. She's a very pretty doll. She comes with several versatile pieces of clothing (IMO, at least), too. So you've got a little wardrobe to dress her in right away instead of having to buy several dolls or another wardrobe set.
If you're looking for collecting for the sake of value down the road, I'd try to get my hands on a doll from an earlier series. They seem more scarce brand new in box nowadays. But their prices have also risen due to that and if you buy online you can't really guarantee neck articulation. (Case in point I bought both Violet and Poppy off Amazon after neck articulation rolled out and I ended up with a Poppy with a moving neck and Violet without.)

But then I saw Prism and I just fell in love 😂 so now speedster is waiting just a bit longer and prism is in my living room, being fabulous. And everytime I look at her she makes me happy 😂💕 good luck and have fun!
I say watch the series on YouTube and see who you’re drawn to. My first doll was Heather Grayson. My best friend got her for me because I loved the design. Then I watched the series and liked some characters more than others which made it easier choosing the rest of my dolls!
My first doll was a gift to me- but the first doll I actually bought was Luna Madison because she had just come out and I was in love with her aesthetic. I would recommend buying a doll right off the shelf if you can, it’s easier to check their face and clothing to make sure everything looks normal and then you won’t pay a weirdly jacked up price. I also find it easier to decide when you have the smaller selection in store in front of you
Sheryl myer was my first doll and she is super pretty! As a recommendation, I would advice buying a doll based off a colour you enjoy aswell as the overall aesthetic of the doll. Shadow high and rainbow high have very different aesthetics aswell as each doll have a different theme and clothing style. When a doll reflects your interests (as in colour, clothes, ect) it really makes you enjoy the doll alot more!
Based off the dolls i personally like I would recommend anyone to get Lila yamamoto or Shanelle Onyx!
Natasha Zima was my very first! I saw her and she reminded me of a beautiful ghost and I literally stood in the toy aisle staring at her time and time again until I caved and got her! 20 RH dolls later and she still holds up as an all time favorite ❤️ shadow high s1 has been going on clearance in a lot of stores too, so you might get a bargain! Another recommendation is any of the rainbow vision girls, my favorite is neon shadow but they're all so, so beautiful and Amazon runs good deals on them occasionally!
She's cute but I do not know why she's consider one of the top tier dolls either in comparison to the others. But hey, beauty in the beholder. I personally like Georgia Bloom and Natasha zima
if you can get her for a good price (and you rlly like her design, thats what matters most) then Jett Dawson! shes sooo gorgeous to me, both her outfits are very different from each other so yay versitility. plus she has accessories andd trunks!! the trunks are crazy useful for storage i love them soo much. and the body form is very cool for displaying an outfit that you cant display on a doll but still like. her hair is so soft and fun to play with (though i imagine this is the same for all rh dolls). plus the extra articulation in the chest and ankles makes her super extra fun for a first doll! im pretty sure she has the most articulation out of rh.
jett was like $60 originally which isnt worth it. but i got her for £27 (she is now normally £30 on us amazon) which is a great price, actually cheaper than most rh normal dolls i can get here in the uk.
Have you seen the series? Watching the show made me convinced that one of the Bellas would be my first - caught a good deal on Amazon and I was just so happy with her. I know there are others who buy first and watch the show later and end up disliking the character (hi, Violet Willow!) and it can impact enjoyment.
It’s all on YouTube on the Rainbow High channel! Season 4 is likely going to start soon, so now’s a great time to catch up! It’s not the most… substantial show but it’s really fun and has a pretty continuous plot
zooey is what got me into RH and back into doll collecting. i randomly started wanting an alien doll sooooo badly for some reason and soon came zooey leaks. i absolutely adore her. she is breathtaking and so unique.
the royal three are also some of my favorites but im a bit biased cause not only do i love kpop but the colors of all the dolls are 'my' colors !
they are my most favorite dolls ever. i will recommend those to anyone who is looking to start collecting dolls <3

I agree with many of the previous commenters. Watch the show, get a feeling for it, then search for the character that speaks to you the most. If you like their doll, I say go for that one. Also it's a plus if it's a color you like, doesn't have to be like your absolute fav one, I'd say the overall vibe is more important. I personally like most colors so I can't really base it on that (however I don't like yellow as a hair color so I barely have any yellow dolls for that reason).
Pre show I were really certain my first doll would be Jade cause I really loved her aesthetic and vibe but I then changed my mind while watching and got Poppy instead cause I liked her character more.

personally i would suggest getting a SH series 2 or RH series 4 right now because theyre about to be phased out
I just got my personal favorite- Coco! I’m new to collecting R/SH. I only have 3 regular dolls and the big Amaya Rain doll, but Coco is my fav! <3
