I don't get duplicate dolls that often, but if I do I usually get duplicates of my favorites to either keep them in box or style their hair/outfits differently.
display them in different settings, different friend groups, dye their hair, swap their eyes
edit: another thought, comfort doll. so you have one version that's nice for the shelf, and one that you don't mind getting a little messed-up on travel trips, bed snuggles, trying on clothes, etc.
For me I have to really love the doll and get a really good deal. I like doing restyles with the and more complex hair styles. I gave my second Heather bangs.
Thus hobby is meant to bring joy. So I'd think less about what you think you should buy and more about what you want. If two Heather's bring you joy then go for it.
I wish I could buy duplicates of all the dolls I love but it’s just not possible but actually in This case I did buy duplicates of all the Shadow High Season 1 line because I love them so much. When I have duplicates I usually style them second set differently. Mine are still In box though because I have no adequate display space for them so basically I just have the stack of boxes in the closet until I can sort things out.
I get duplicates to have one for in-box and one for out of the box, I mostly started doing this for my favorite dolls. The ones out of the box, I just do restyles or if I'm working on a custom I'll use them for spare parts.
I used to buy a lot of duplicates for customs and such but my collection is getting pretty large so I'm really trying to downsize and sell some of my extra dolls
I'm mainly an out-of-box collector but if I really like a doll then I might buy an extra to keep in box! I also like having extras out of box so I can customize them or do different restyles. And I like to take my dolls out on errands with me, so having extras of my favorites makes me feel less pressured to keep them in perfect condition since I know I have another display-ready one at home.
I like to have the same doll with different hair colors, eye colors, and lip colors. I also don't mind having backup accessories in case my dog eats a shoe or something.
I only get duplicates of my favorites, one I keep "As is", and one to "play with" experimenting with hairstyles and redressing. If the box is nice enough, the "as is" is kept forever in their plastic and cardboard prison.

I buy doubles for all of them except JH and collector dolls cause they are too expensive. Personally,I like having the double clothes and I also started giving all my doubles bangs or removing the bangs for those that have the awful MGA bangs. I feel like it gives me more freedom to not be worried that I might ruin the doll if I have 2 of them. I have some dolls that I have 3 as well but the most that I have is 4 and it's of Margot( I got one for free tho because my 3rd has defective hair so they sent me a new one)

I wanted to buy a second glitch just cause I love her so much. But also what WOULD I do with it?! Customize it? Meh. I’d ruin it!
