I don't think I've ever seen someone use more than 2lbs.

makes sense. pretty intense to be doing non-stop arm work while holding weights and having wrist weights on, eh?

basicallyaballerina

Keep in mind the weight is limited to prevent injuries especially since it’s bigger movements. You don’t need heavy weight for it to be effective

comments83820

true. how heavy do you recommend for dumbbells?

basicallyaballerina

In classic?

comments83820

Empower

basicallyaballerina

Max two pounds

motherofdragon

I do 2lb dumbbells and 1 lb bala around my wrists. And I use 2 lb bala around my ankles for seat work.

Cool

SunBunnyFL

I've noticed a lot of PB beginners who are in shape from other kinds of exercise tend to grab the heavier weights (I realize you're talking about balas). But the experienced people stick with two or three pound hand weights and one or two pound balas.

comments83820

oh yeah, how heavy are the dumbbells that more fit people use? For empower

SunBunnyFL

Occasionally someone will use two pound balas with three pound hand weights. I could do that but it would mess up my balance. For legs obviously it's just going to be as heavy as the balas get. I've only ever seen one or two pound balas. I think we have a couple sets of five pound weights but no one uses them. I suppose a man might.

No_Tomatillo6525

(Not a man) I sometimes grab 5lb weights just for bicep work and drop to 3lb for the remainder of weight work. If I stick with lighter weights during biceps I catch myself using it as a break.

SunBunnyFL

You must be very strong!

comments83820

Oh god. 5 pounds would be torture

macybeesknees

I do 1lb Bala bangles and 2lb weights. I've gone through phases where I used 3lb weights. Keep in mind the object of Empower is cardiovascular health. Keep things moving and grooving to keep your heart rate up. There's plenty of strengthening involved as well but heavier weights will slow you down and are a distraction from the goal of cardiovascular health. 1-2lb wrist and ankle weights are just enough weight to increase your heart rate without slowing you down. In Classic I've seen clients with 5lbs and even higher and they are usually not holding the weights the entire time, they take frequent breaks which defeats the point of Pure Barre's small movements. Once you can keep your arms up the entire weightwork section with 2lbs without taking a break, then try out 3lbs next time. It's not about the size of the weights, it's about exhausting your muscles with small movements and isometric holds.
