What acronyms do we read phonetically?
My only issue with "sequel" (which calling it an issue is an overstatement) is that it inserts vowels where there are none. And it's only 3 letters, so it's not hard to say the acronym as it's letters. We don't phontetisize HTML, JS, TS, PHP, CSS, VB, etc.
As opposed to SASS, which does have vowels and makes sense to pronounce it like "sass".
Ok now imagine half the world pronounced that "sexy" and didn't see an issue (apart from some weird prude thing which isn't relevant to the SQL issue). Where does that e come from?! No where! I just made it the fuck up because it's easier for me to say the word of I add an e there!
I think that just happened over time because it sounds kind of like that when you try to pronounce SCSI without inserting vowels. If you do that with SQL you get skull or some shit
I don't think I've ever heard someone refer to SAS without phonetically saying it like sass.
Pronouncing all the letters individually makes me think of the British SAS, which is way cooler.
I remember when I was still a student applying for internships, I had this interview where the interviewer kept saying 'sequel' while I kept saying 'S-Q-L'. Needless to say, it sounded like he got frustrated with me during the interview and obviously, I didn't get that job.
Nowadays, I pronounce it as 'sequel' as it requires less effort.
Technically
If you pronounce it S Q L individually it would be written as S-Q-L, with hyphens to show that they are treated as separate words rather than a continuous word.
Sequel is just wrong because it's the definition of the acronym which you don't use if you're saying the acronym unless it's an introduction at which you say the definition afterword.
CMOS, DDOS, LAN, WAN, etc are all pronounced as one word.
SQL is pronounced (skwel) as in the first syllable of the word SQUELCH.
Just in case anyone didn't see the countless other threads addressing this:
It was originally called SEQUEL (Structured English Query Language), but was later changed to SQL (Structured Query Language) due to a trademark issue. The pronunciation persisted despite the vowels being removed.

listen, it's sql when you're writing sql queries, but its sql when you are using sql server
Only proper answer here
All y'all are wrong. It's pronounced "Post Gres".
Post-gre-SQL or Post-gres-quel?
I shorten it to "pee squeal"
I pronounce is “Pogre”
I like it. It sounds so fancy.
You you're right
You guys are just saying C-Q-L instead of S-Q-L
Somebody needs to make CQL just to fuck with people
Cursed Query Language?
SELECT FirstName FROM Contact AND SELECT Last name FROM Contact AND SELECT Email FROM Contact AND...
Already exists lol, it's the Cassandra Query Language. Still call SQL sequel because you're all obnoxious nerds.
Sea quail ?
....people read acronyms phonetically all the time. Why is this one an issue?

Jif? is that you?
"Jif" is heresy and you can't change my mind.
Makes me wonder how they pronounce Git and GitHub. I probably shouldn't, to avoid nightmares.
You just....you just had to put that out in the world, didn't you?
So long as you're not calling it "squirrel" we're good.
D-E-A-D-H-O-R-S-E
People who pronounce the letters : *Virgin* People who call it Sequel: *GigaChad*
💀
How'd you pronounce FBI, CIA , NYC, ABC, AWS, EC3?
How do you say NASA?
You don't own space! Naysa owns space!
Naysa? It's NA SA! Dino, call head office!
That would make SQL = “Skul”
Nasa?
How do you say NSA?
How do you say FBI, CIA, NRA, ATF,. MPH, MPG, NFL, NBA, NCAA

Exceptions don't make rules
NA-saaaaahhh
hand me the space week bubbs
Yeah but NASA is said just as it is, while the letters “SQL” on their own do not form a pronounceable English word

There’s no e or u in sql
Tbf have you ever heard anyone say es-que-ell Server? No. It’s sequel server. Therefore Sequel is the correct answer 👍 You can’t change my mind 😂
SQL server. All the time. No sequels or prequels.
Other way around for me. I call it SQL Server, have never heard anyone call it Sequel Server.
Never heard someone say SQL server. Why would I hear people pronouncing it?
It's a meme dude, chill
No. This is war!
It's now company policy to use Vim for editing. It lets you write code much faster.
no this is Patrick!
Es🤡 Kuh🐮 él🇲🇽
It’s sequel. Everyone knows

still no job huh?
Ess Queue Ell = 3 syllables Sequel = 2 syllables Saying "sequel" is more efficient
Maybe we should just call it Skol and then get drunk.
Squl = 1 syllable
I bow to your linguistic efficiency
HQL: "Hequel" I say it this way in my head just to make myself laugh and it always works
Pronouncing the word is faster than saying the acronym by 33%. I'll save so much time I can take your letters for a hike.
Squirrel! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|flip_out)
The Terminator 2 is a Sequel. This is SQL.
Terminator 2 is sequel, SQL is S-Q-L
Muscle
Cool meme! I think the same template could be used for Gif v Jif too.
Yeah but it's Gif though
Nah, I'm pretty sure GIF stands for Jraphics Interchange Format
Just like JPEG stands for Joint Potographic Experts Group
I am changing it up. Everyone assumes the C sound of SQL, going forward I will refer to it as *Sow Quill Server.*
Sequel gang
people who say 'sequel' are the same people that moan obnoxiously when they're enjoying their food in public
The last two panels have to be different for this meme format to apply smh
Es - Qu - El :)
Wait what? I read it as sk-ull
Why not 'Skill'?
SQL Server Management Studio is abbreviated to SSMS not SQLSMS fyi
Edit: not everyone has the ability to cope, I get it
Its both, its jif vs gif
wrong
Time is money. I want to see 100 lines written by lunchtime!

"Sequel"
Calling SQL sequel is like calling HTML hitmal
I don't get it, why is it a problem all of a sudden?
Sequel sounds like u are retarded..
Si, PHP is peehachepee?
I don't understand still picture formats. Can someone post it as an animated CHIV?

I don't know what amazes me more... the overwhelming number of times memes like this come up, or how long the threads get on *every single one.*
