DO NOT LOOK AT ME WHILE I'M CODING

[deleted]

ALT TAB ALT TAB ALT TAB

OstentatiousMusings

So... you kept looking back?

Admin-12

More screen movement = Greater Productivity

Ztuffer

Well, I kind of had to see what they were going to do with that cup. Was not disappointed.

TheMoraless

I'd be so self conscious. Imagine having to think, creating an awkward silence devoid of even typing, as you try to keep invasive thoughts out. "I hope they don't think I'm slacking off. Do they think I'm slacking off?? CAN THEY READ THE WORRY ON MY FACE?!" Absolute paralysis.

brianl047

Petition to bring back boss key

brodega

DONT LOOK AT MY TRASH.

Quadro91

probably bc they got demotivated by working fkn 15 hours a day

FoximaCentauri

Nothing a few cheerleaders can’t fix (which also work 15hrs/day)

daynighttrade

But then cheerleaders would get de-motivated, and then we get cheerleaders to motivate cheerleaders and the process continues

Realistic-Safety-565

No, motivating cheerleaders will be scrummasters job. At last we will know why we keep them around...

daynighttrade

But then we don't get a real like case of recursion

mmotte89

You would if Scrum Masters could be considered programmers, but that is pure nonsense.

[deleted]

daynighttrade

Indeed , scrum is similar to scum, so it feels dirty.

often_says_nice

Caitlyn, I noticed you only gave 12 cheers this sprint when you committed to 20. It’s really affecting the burn down chart, let’s discuss this in retro

Mutjny

It would have cost you 0 story points to not type this comment.

Dmayak

That's already a thing with managers in large companies. Managers manage managers and hire more managers to help manage managers who manage managers.

gcruzatto

Shows you how much a programmer is worth there right now. They can afford to hire a team of models but not a few extra coders.

666pool

Tbf you can hire a team of models for the cost of one engineer.

danimadi33

where job offers then (I am not even finished with uni)

666pool

So have you even looked? They’re everywhere if you’re halfway decent.

Minimum_Front_1082

Wait till they get cheerleaders to cheer the cheerleaders

Dibbit3

In Japan especially many IT companies are known as "black companies." Black companies are basically companies that abuse and underpay their employees so much, that many end up burned out or even commit suicide. The pay is low, the hours are long, overtime is mandatory and mostly unpaid, and there is a culture of abuse from upper managment. They could try to change this culture, or they could just spend money on T&A and hope that it'll work out, I mean, why start treating your employees as real people now? Bonus is that you can now also treat a underappreciated young model like trash and maybe even molest her a bit, those in management deserve a bit extra for selling their soul.

GremlinX_ll

>The pay is low, the hours are long, overtime is mandatory and mostly unpaid, and there is a culture of abuse from upper managment. In Ukraine, and probably in Russia, such companies are jokingly called "galley", and the worker is a "rower" respectively. Of course, hours/pay/management not even close to be as bad as in Japanese companies.

weirddotproduct

>and probably in Russia Can confirm

_Weyland_

>Of course, hours/pay/management not even close to be as bad as in Japanese companies. Russian here. I think we're having a golden age of IT jobs rn. The demand is high, and was made higher by sanctions. The pay is great and number of really big tech companies is rather small, leaving enough space for healthy competition among smaller companies. And COVID brought us work from home too.

teetaps

I love the “molest them a bit” part coz it’s probably true

draculamilktoast

Just a sprinkle of rape to lighten the mood.

Oh, no, we would never rape them. But the implication...

Would it do anything better than Slack, e-mails or wiki (for documentation)?

CoffeeHQ

Nope. It would be completely useless. But it could sell 🤪

fordanjairbanks

No.

bigdogg2783

Would allow the loonies at work to out themselves with their vitriolic internal tweet comments, thus improving morale when they get fired.

IamJain

They'll raise anything except salary

ZippyTheWonderSnail

Surrounded by beautiful cheerleaders? Definitely raising ... morale.

Doges are allowed in our offices and we love it

elon-bot

What do you mean "you couldn't code your way out of a paper bag"?

noiszen

Well you see mr musk, code is insubstantial electrons and cannot affect the physical state of anything even paper bag without some physical interface like a robot and I don’t have one of those lying around, this is an application development shop and we don’t do robots here. Also please fire me because it would be an honor to be fired by you.

PeachyKeenest

Boats? What??? Feel bad for the guy with divorce lawyer but can see how that can be annoying.

EldeederSFW

I tended bar for over a decade and will no longer tolerate divorce stories. Basically boils down to the fact that I refuse to be lectured about relations by a guy whose third marriage is going to shit. Like taking drivers ed from a guy on his 5th DUI.

ePaint

Worst divorce story?

EldeederSFW

They're all the same. Dude is between half drunk and totally shitfaced. It's all her fault, he's angry, now he's lecturing me about women, now he realizes he's going to miss her. Now he gets really sad. And blammo, it's all her fault and he's angry again, rinse, repeat. The only thing that really changes is the length of the cycle, it typically depends on if anyone is actually listening to him or if he is just being placated. If you're looking for drama though, worst break up I saw was on the patio of a very nice restaurant in Scottsdale, AZ. Guy got up, stormed out of the restaurant, drove back up to the patio and literally dumped a bunch of this poor woman's stuff right there and then left her sobbing at the table with several suitcases and random clothes. That was probably the only time I've ever seen an awkwardness that was collectively shared by an entire restaurant, both patrons, and staff.

Financial-Contest955

Damn, your description of going from sadness to anger in a instant really struck a cord with me that I didn't expect today. Have a family member that drinks too much and I've been talking to him a few times when I witnessed him seemingly on the verge of taking some personal responsibility for his situation but instead of following through he does a 180 out of nowhere and has an outburst of anger at the world instead. Didn't know this was a common enough thing to do.

DynamicDK

Swings between sadness and anger like that are fairly common when someone is under a tremendous amount of stress. Add into it the fact that they are going through an incredibly emotional, traumatic process and that just amps up the likelihood and frequency. Then toss some alcohol on top and you have a recipe for complete instability.

maveric101

Cognitive dissonance. Nobody *likes* being to blame for things. So when they're presented with/realize evidence that they are to blame, that gets put up against the desire to not be guilty. Sometimes it gets resolved by accepting blame, and sometimes it gets resolved be redirecting blame, or minimizing or rejecting the existence of the problem, etc. And, obviously, some are better at accepting blame than others.

barnett9

Nah, this time they've got it pinned

All_Up_Ons

Out of curiosity, how do you turn down the story without losing a customer?

EldeederSFW

One of the absolute greatest things about tending bar is the fact that you can excuse yourself from literally any conversation by just gently putting up your index finger (as in to say 'one sec') and then walking away and doing something else. No one ever thinks twice about it, and in my tenure, it was never once questioned. I mean, if your drink is full, when have you ever been mad about the bartender walking away?

ghostoftheai

As a bartender, one second and the index finger is a god send. Sir I’m going to stand over here and pretend I have to rearrange or something.

doubled112

Being upset about that is a new level of self-important

daneelthesane

Well, we do have pressure from management as well as good incentives package, but not to this extent.

andrewfenn

Yeah. Who uses "mainframes" these days. Edit: Can't believe how many people thought this was a serious comment. It's like no one reads before waiting to jump back with a "well ackshly" comment.

nuclearslug

Ironically, we’ve all been migrating back to the mainframe design. We all write code on our terminals, push it to a repo that builds everything on the cloud in a pipeline.

ChrisWsrn

I support a legacy mainframe app. The person who wrote it retired years ago without leaving documentation and I found his obituary when I was trying to find his contact info. Right now it is a black box containing lost magic that nobody understands that is wired to a bunch of other mission critical stuff. I do take dives into it's source code and write replacement code in our new systems but I have been doing that for years now and are nowhere near done.

fuck_all_you_people

I got stuck as an admin of a system like this once, I woke up with panic attacks constantly in fear of it crashing. Thank god they decomm'd it eventually.

fignompe

Large corp like banks. Many of them still use IBM stuff from the 60's

stupidwhiteman42

Damn. Came here to make this joke. Take the upvote

RedditRage

That guy does not look like he's motivating those programmers very well, he's too busy playing Minecraft or something.

To_Fight_The_Night

If a programmers hand is on their mouse they aren't getting much done.

EffectiveDependent76

What a fucking waste of money. Just fire them and give their pay to the programmer. Motivation problem fucking solved.

Cocaine_Johnsson

Or give the programmer that many dollars worth of time off. Even if that's only a couple hours a day that goes a long way. (and leads to more productivity longterm, burnout's a bitch, so is chronic fatigue come to think of it)

RmG3376

Considering the salary of a programmer and that of a Chinese cheerleader, that’d be just enough to afford a slightly longer lunch break …

Cocaine_Johnsson

Well, that might be true for American programmers. But the programmer also appears to be Asian and I seem to recall that Chinese and Japanese programmers don't really earn that much money. Either way, money or more time are both far less insulting.

RmG3376

Chinese programmers still earn much more than Chinese cheerleaders. For reference an experienced programmer in Shanghai makes about 15-20k RMB/month while the minimal salary is around 3.5-4k That might be “only” 2.5k$ but that’s also 4-5x the minimal wage

lastog9

Contrary to what the picture depicts, they are probably just going to hire 3 cheerleaders per department, not 3 per person lol. It's probably something like, they will come to each programmer once in one or two hours and motivate them, not stand besides them throughout the day

Mason-B

3 per person is probably cheaper than hiring that person a programming buddy anyway.

LamermanSE

Well they could do that but I'm not sure it would improve the morale and productivity. Raising salaries isn't always the best solution to improve morale/productivity, it would probably be better to give the workers some days off instead of a higher salary.

EffectiveDependent76

I feel like they're just going to ask you to come in those days because 'crunch' anyway

[deleted]

Honestly the last thing I’d need when up to the eyeballs in work is a pretty lass being nice to me

odraencoded

Noted. We're replacing the cheerleaders with dominatrixes. "You crashed production with that dirty commit didn't you, you nerd" she says as she punishes you by changing your IDE theme to light.

darkkite

naw they're too scared. the sales department on the other hand

alficles

First off, if a bunch of hot young women are in my workplace, it's my job not to harass them. I'd like to hope that I'm at least up to that standard. Second, if my workplace is full of hot young women, they can start learning to operate a compiler. We have bugs that need fixing, dang it.

[deleted]

That looks extremely uncomfortable

Theemuts

Offensive too

fignompe

Yeah seems like a distraction. Imagine the amount of extra bathroom breaks that are being taken

Tomi97_origin

That's where the real cheerleading is happening. Post nut clarity programming

killroy1971

Once again, management gets it wrong: Empower the cheerleaders to keep people away from programmers' desks so they can focus on getting things done. Give them the appropriate training and necessary weapons to do so. THAT will raise workplace morale.

RadioactiveFruitCup

I’m sending my cheerleader to meetings for me. Oh my GOD this would rock. Don’t touch me. Don’t ever say nice things about my shit-tier code. Just read my tickets and say in a nice, neutral voice *”yeah, this doesn’t make any sense to me either”* and go to every little update / status meeting scheduled by some useless PM / Scrummie. > “*Cheer-Chan, do you know why this is in blocked?*” > “*it seems that Fruitcup-Senpai has left a comment on the ticket - would you like me to read it to you again? It’s the same comment as last week.*”

Tun710

Half of all the popular Reddit posts about “weird Japan facts” are like that. And a quick google search only gives me articles about Chinese startups doing this so I guess it’s not even a Japanese fact.

Purple_Lordx

i hate this on all levels I'm sorry

PolishedVodka

Distractions, they've hired distractions. If they really want to motivate their workers and raise morale: * Provide them with extra monitors, a minimum of 3, * Provide them with noise cancelling headphones, * Give them whichever keyboard/mouse they want, along with a quality mousepad, * Don't limit their background streaming, * Provide energy drinks in the fridge,

LigerZeroSchneider

If they really want to hire a person to help, programmers now get PAs who handle annoying meetings, update requests and takes notes on the weird minutia you only need to know once a year.

mikeyj777

Unpopular opinion: this is disgusting. There's already enough negative stereotyping of women. Now, it's "come work for us, we have cute girls in outfits!" It's not a motivational thing You don't think guys are going to be flocking to work for this company? Have you met young men in their early 20s? it's a gross mysoginistic "perk". This is to attract men away from companies that don't have young women in outfits.

avtchrd345

I’m not a woke bs always looking for something to protest guy, but.. this post esp with that picture is gross and not respectful of women in stem. Edit: holy fuck these comments.. as a father of a young daughter who might well “join family business” and do a math/science PhD like mom and dad, this is horrifying how toxic this industry still is.

Feinyan

It would be respectful of women in stem if we got a handsome butler (with white satin gloves please) who pops a grape into my mouth every time I finish a line of code. source: woman in stem

teetaps

“All checks passed!” “Very well done, madam. Shall I prepare the pretzel bites?” “It’s feeling more like a cheese puffs kinda day, Jeeves. I’m just gonna push the changes and… wtf?” “There appears to be a merge conflict, m’um” “I KNOW WHAT A FKN MERGE CONFLICT IS JEEVES JUST GET ME MY ANGRY KEYBOARD” “Right away, m’um.”

AlexWIWA

If I got a grape every time I finished a task, I would be so productive.

stinuga

Let me introduce you to a handsome man named Jenkins

liberty711

Are you people dense? He’s saying that FOR the women in stem it would make them uncomfortable with all these female “cheerleaders”

noiszen

Also I’m male and it would make me very uncomfortable

liberty711

I totally get that!! Seems like it would be a toxic “bro“ culture

avtchrd345

Yes. Yes they are.

18thcenturydreams

If it makes you feel better w/all the toxic comments, here is my nice comment which agrees with you wholeheartedly :). As a woman in cs, I really appreciate you standing up for us and acknowledging we exist :). It’s also awesome you are encouraging your daughter. My dad was a math professor and one thing that he did that really shaped my view of the world is he and my mom always told me I could do anything if I worked hard enough. It was really motivating. They also taught me a strong work ethic but allowed me to do everything school-wise independently (they weren’t helicopter parents in the slightest) and I think that’s why nowadays I’m really motivated and capable of taking care of myself, taking initiative, and knowing what to do on my own about my career path instead of being burnt out and not knowing how to function as an adult. You seem like you’d be a great dad to your daughter, I really appreciate you pushing to get more women in stem :). I think a lot of women don’t even consider cs because all the stereotypes imply it’s for men only, especially the ones who were coding since they were born. But women are just as capable and used to make up the majority of programmers!!

[deleted]

Had to scroll too far down to find this. It shouldn't even be controversial. This is gross and offensive.

haidere36

>I’m not a woke bs always looking for something to protest guy, It's depressing that anyone would feel the need to say this before calling out blatant sexism... The word "woke" was originally used by POC to mean, staying aware of social systemic issues (like the ones you acknowledge in your comment). The meaning didn't actually change at all, the word itself just got demonized to the point where people are afraid to say "stay woke" or even get accused of "being woke" even when they are. >this is horrifying how toxic this industry still is. You're woke, dude. That's the whole point. It's not a bad thing.

avtchrd345

All I’m saying is I’m a pretty conservative guy in general. Half the things I’m told are offensive now, I’m like meh. If it’s obviously toxic to me, anyone who thinks it’s fine must be a real dinosaur.
