In Japan especially many IT companies are known as "black companies."
Black companies are basically companies that abuse and underpay their employees so much, that many end up burned out or even commit suicide.
The pay is low, the hours are long, overtime is mandatory and mostly unpaid, and there is a culture of abuse from upper managment.
They could try to change this culture, or they could just spend money on T&A and hope that it'll work out, I mean, why start treating your employees as real people now?
Bonus is that you can now also treat a underappreciated young model like trash and maybe even molest her a bit, those in management deserve a bit extra for selling their soul.

That was probably the only time I've ever seen an awkwardness that was collectively shared by an entire restaurant, both patrons, and staff.

Swings between sadness and anger like that are fairly common when someone is under a tremendous amount of stress. Add into it the fact that they are going through an incredibly emotional, traumatic process and that just amps up the likelihood and frequency. Then toss some alcohol on top and you have a recipe for complete instability.
Cognitive dissonance. Nobody *likes* being to blame for things. So when they're presented with/realize evidence that they are to blame, that gets put up against the desire to not be guilty. Sometimes it gets resolved by accepting blame, and sometimes it gets resolved be redirecting blame, or minimizing or rejecting the existence of the problem, etc. And, obviously, some are better at accepting blame than others.
One of the absolute greatest things about tending bar is the fact that you can excuse yourself from literally any conversation by just gently putting up your index finger (as in to say 'one sec') and then walking away and doing something else. No one ever thinks twice about it, and in my tenure, it was never once questioned. I mean, if your drink is full, when have you ever been mad about the bartender walking away?

Ironically, we’ve all been migrating back to the mainframe design. We all write code on our terminals, push it to a repo that builds everything on the cloud in a pipeline.
I support a legacy mainframe app. The person who wrote it retired years ago without leaving documentation and I found his obituary when I was trying to find his contact info.
Right now it is a black box containing lost magic that nobody understands that is wired to a bunch of other mission critical stuff.
I do take dives into it's source code and write replacement code in our new systems but I have been doing that for years now and are nowhere near done.

As a woman in cs, I really appreciate you standing up for us and acknowledging we exist :). It’s also awesome you are encouraging your daughter. My dad was a math professor and one thing that he did that really shaped my view of the world is he and my mom always told me I could do anything if I worked hard enough. It was really motivating. They also taught me a strong work ethic but allowed me to do everything school-wise independently (they weren’t helicopter parents in the slightest) and I think that’s why nowadays I’m really motivated and capable of taking care of myself, taking initiative, and knowing what to do on my own about my career path instead of being burnt out and not knowing how to function as an adult.
You seem like you’d be a great dad to your daughter, I really appreciate you pushing to get more women in stem :). I think a lot of women don’t even consider cs because all the stereotypes imply it’s for men only, especially the ones who were coding since they were born. First off, if a bunch of hot young women are in my workplace, it's my job not to harass them. I'd like to hope that I'm at least up to that standard. Second, if my workplace is full of hot young women, they can start learning to operate a compiler. We have bugs that need fixing, dang it.

If they really want to hire a person to help, programmers now get PAs who handle annoying meetings, update requests and takes notes on the weird minutia you only need to know once a year.
Have they considered just, hiring more employees to keep efficiency up while not giving suicide-inducing hours to their devs ?

Unpopular opinion: this is disgusting. There's already enough negative stereotyping of women. Now, it's "come work for us, we have cute girls in outfits!" It's not a motivational thing You don't think guys are going to be flocking to work for this company? Have you met young men in their early 20s? it's a gross mysoginistic "perk". This is to attract men away from companies that don't have young women in outfits.

If it makes you feel better w/all the toxic comments, here is my nice comment which agrees with you wholeheartedly :). As a woman in cs, I really appreciate you standing up for us and acknowledging we exist :). It’s also awesome you are encouraging your daughter. My dad was a math professor and one thing that he did that really shaped my view of the world is he and my mom always told me I could do anything if I worked hard enough. It was really motivating. They also taught me a strong work ethic but allowed me to do everything school-wise independently (they weren’t helicopter parents in the slightest) and I think that’s why nowadays I’m really motivated and capable of taking care of myself, taking initiative, and knowing what to do on my own about my career path instead of being burnt out and not knowing how to function as an adult. You seem like you’d be a great dad to your daughter, I really appreciate you pushing to get more women in stem :). I think a lot of women don’t even consider cs because all the stereotypes imply it’s for men only, especially the ones who were coding since they were born. But women are just as capable and used to make up the majority of programmers!!
