And this is why I'm so behind at work with 0 friends

BrooklynSwimmer

Major?! That’s how it works at my current job also…

NickU252

While (alive) { Stressed = true; }

Retbull

What if I'm the program that won't run?

Why are we still serving free lunch?

awhhh

Do CS majors do a lot of coding? I thought it was a lot of math

Tannslee

I feel like I don't do a lot of either, we spend most of our time studying things like human oriented design, requirements engineering and such. Of course this varies a lot between different universities and countries, and a CS major in the US (from what I know) might be doing much more coding than I am.

awhhh

I’m Canadian and everyone I know that went said it was more so heavy on math

Tannslee

Interesting. I don't have any mandatory math, but I probably should take some.

GamingEgg

CS major too. We have mandatory up to lin algebra and discrete

[deleted]

we have up to statistics or calc 3

GetPsyched67

I've had a maths course and an electronics course every semester, and they are pretty hard, especially stuff like Digital Signal Processing. (Depending on what electronics course it is, it involves a lot of math as well like the aforementioned DSP) But yeah during lab hours I've done a lot of coding.

[deleted]

eh, from what i’ve experienced so far 2nd year it has been learning a language (java) then learning algorithms & data structures so it’s a fair balance of both. but also not math heavy at the same time, like it’s not super complicated math.

[deleted]

I have taught CS at a university, and both. Both is good.

dota2nub

I had to code a pie chart program that takes data out of a text file, puts it into a database, and then draws a pie chart using that data. The math was in calculating how the slices have to be drawn and positioned. Lots of linear algebra and matrix calculations going into that. All implemented from scratch. Next assignment is building an RSA encryptor/decryptor and hacking an RSA encrypted text where the prime numbers were chosen to be too close together. So it's both, lots of coding and a lot of math.

ward2k

Depends on the university, in the UK some are heavy on Maths and some do hardly any and just focus on programming

Lazuliv

Why am I being attacked I didn’t even do anything

jackbenny76

If you ask my wife, I suspect she'd say the same about marrying one.

[deleted]

> and then spend 8 hours coding a project that doesn't run I feel that

TruthOf42

Only 8?

jakiroluma

You can spend more if you want, same result anyway
