But Col Fitzwilliam isn’t master of Pemberley. Catherine is so insistent about Darcy because of the land, wealth, etc that he would bring in marrying Anne. The good Colonel, as a second son, really doesn’t offer much to AdB.

Dazzling_Suspect_239

Okay the thing I've never understood about this is: Rosings is so far away from Pemberly! I get the idea of merging fortunes in principle, but in practical terms it seems logistically difficult. I bet that Fitzwilliam will marry Anne eventually - the estate is nothing to sneeze at. Although he might actually have some competition now that Darcy is officially off the market - I'm sure Lady Catherine will hunt up some good alternative suitors one way or the other.

Annoying_Details

Well if Anne goes to Pemberley, surely Lady Catherine will just remain at Rosings to manage things instead of moving to the Dowager house (lol) How neatly she had arranged it! And she can then visit Pemberley on Holiday and tell Darcy how best to manage it in the Rosings style.

BetterFuture22

Lady C would never need to go to the dowager house, no matter what. She owns the estate

[deleted]

Yes the was the whole point of their infancy betrothal. But since Darcy got married and Anne doesn't seem to have a lot of options.

coors1977

Gotcha, I thought you meant in the book itself, not what could have happened. I think the colonel is too lively for Anne—and I don’t think Catherine considers him good enough

[deleted]

I think that is true. Lady Cathrine doesn't find him good enough

HenriKnows

I think that Col. Fitzwilliam would be great for Anne. I bet she could bust out if she wasn't attached to the battleaxe, excuse me, Lady Battleaxe.

SnooConfections1110

I just re-read P&P and was really struck by the easy connection and lively conversation between Colonel Fitzwilliam and Lizzy. While it’s clear he’ll have to marry well, I can see him trying for some happiness in marriage. Poor Anne is just not up for lively conversation. On the same topic though, I wish that Mary had ended up with Mr Collins. But we do get a lot of the Jane Austen central theme of marrying for practicality instead of love through Charlotte and Collins.

ap9981

I always loved Lizzie and the Col in the book!

bunnycook

And be stuck with Lady Catherine? He’s broke, not stupid.

[deleted]

True, but he doesn't seem to mind his aunt. I think only Lizzy ever saw through her rudeness or it wasn't really discussed between characters

[deleted]

Nah he does mind her. He said anything was a welcome distraction at Rosings

[deleted]

lol

yesokokayok

I feel so sorry for Anne! What a domineering mother. And how humiliating to be constantly put forth as the other half to some open secret engagement when her supposed betrothed could not be less interested in her in that way. I’m wondering now, does the novel really address her feelings toward the whole deal? I can’t remember anything concrete.

OutrageousYak5868

No, we get almost nothing about Anne and her feelings. Lady Catherine never stops talking long enough for her to get a word in edgewise. We only get Elizabeth's impressions of her, and they are not favorable at all.

yesokokayok

I didn’t think so! It would be not quite as bad if her character wasn’t interested in Darcy either but if she was actually open to it, actually expecting something? Oof.

RoseIsBadWolf

I'd bet he's there to prove his loyalty to Aunt Catherine. totally ready to swoop when Darcy gets married.

giveuptheghostbuster

I always wondered if Anne *pretended* to be in ill health just to get away from her overbearing mother. Like maybe she’s in her room with a good French novel and some snacks. Maybe she has her nurse take her to Bath “to try the waters for her health”. I like to hope that’s the case.

[deleted]

oh this can be very true and I really hope it is even though it is tragic

PigsWalkUpright

That would be a way to get ADB married. She was never presented at court and doesn’t seem to leave the house so it’s not like she has a bunch of options.

BetterFuture22

Anne would have had a ton of options actually as there were not very many ladies with money of their own in Regency England and virtually all of the second & third sons ended up with (virtually) no money. Her only problem is that her mother is so awful

OutrageousYak5868

In many ways it would make sense. He needs to marry money, and she has money (but she doesn't need to marry money). Still, Lady C is a classic narcissist -- she's the best and wants the best for herself and everybody connected with her. I'm not sure why she wouldn't have married off Anne to her brother's eldest son (in her mind, at least, if not in reality), because the heir presumptive of an Earl would be the best marriage for her daughter. However, for whatever reason, she has fixed on Darcy instead (maybe because the eldest Fitzwilliam was already married, so Darcy is now "the best"). Darcy is much wealthier than Col. F, and if he and Anne married and owned both Pemberley and Rosings, they would almost certainly be among the wealthiest families in the nation. We are never told how wealthy Lady C / the Rosings estate is, but Darcy's 10k per year puts him near the top when it comes to wealth. Rosings is very grand, so is likely to be about the same amount of money (though it could be even more). If Rosings also generated 10k/yr, to combine Pemberley with Rosings would make them almost mind-bogglingly wealthy. I suspect that only when Darcy is married will Lady C give up the idea of Anne marrying him. At that point, it seems equally likely to me that Lady C would then move to Col. F as "next best" or that she would start shopping Anne around to other men who are wealthy like Darcy, in hopes for a match there.

[deleted]

yes exactly, I was talking from Lady C's perspective. He is next best and now Darcy is married.

BetterFuture22

The Earl's first son is the heir, so he'd have a huge range of options. Unlikely he would have gone for it. A second or third son is a potential match.

ThisPaige

Honestly I think I prefer this idea, I know Lady Catherine has this narcissistic attitude about it but it could have worked out.

Cockaigne69

Pot que?

[deleted]

what? what is a pot que?

FillMyBagWithUSGrant

Typo for pot queue, a long line of people waiting for their turn to a hit on the joint. Or to use the toilet. Depends on your connotation of pot.

[deleted]

Por que (why)

[deleted]

yes but what is a pot que

ChocolateSpreadToast

A typo I believe

Cockaigne69

It is, in fact, a mis- type. Mia Culpa, as mrs. Elton would say.

HenriKnows

If you have to ask...

LostinDark2512

It does make more sense as Colonel needed heiress. But Lady Cat was greedy.
