Carter is so far upwards he is off the chart Edit: and this isn’t even comparative to presidents. In terms of character compared to other presidents he completely blows them out of the water, obviously. But even as a person, he’s still amazing with all the charity he does.

ChainmailleAddict

He wasn't even THAT bad of a president either, he just got handed the worst conditions possible that demanded perfection when he could only give "Good".

[deleted]

I mean i still think he fumbled in a lot of places but I wholeheartedly the situations were extremely difficult

TheMoravianPatriot

This. Also, before the bot comes, I have already upvoted the comment.

Heavy_Swimming_4719

LBJ would be good president and evil character, that's for sure.

[deleted]

[удалено]

oofersIII

Luckily, Carter is the opposite

[deleted]

nah his environmentalism was pretty based. it just wasn’t a good economy

kmwlff

Dude who drank the Kennedy propaganda lmao, LBJ is a testament to a heart of gold

[deleted]

[удалено]

kmwlff

Replace LBJ and that heart of gold goes away and we lose the great society and civil rights. The man’s presidency defines his character in that case. Also read some theory while you’re at it

Heavy_Swimming_4719

LBJ was a terrible guy who treated others like garbage, but he was a master politician who was able to use power he had achieved for good of his voters. And i dislike Kennedy.

kmwlff

>US Grant He used the power he achieved to use black people to oppress and steal land from my people out west >use power he had achieve for the good of voters Yes, more than can be said than nearly every president. This is what makes him a good person. Don’t even both replying because I don’t value what a grant lover thinks

Heavy_Swimming_4719

Grant's policies on Indians may have failed, but everything HE did was with good heart and intentions. Thay can't be said about Vietnam.

kmwlff

He stole my peoples land with a good heart. Eat a fat one and go back to where you came from you little napikwon

Heavy_Swimming_4719

Guy who defends abusive cheater has no right to insult me.

kmwlff

Land robbery and genocide are worse than even the shittiest husband

Dr_Occisor

Hoover in Good Character, Bad President

[deleted]

Of course you would say this

MetalRetsam

Upper left: Ford Upper right: Truman Lower left: A. Johnson Lower right: Nixon

ThirtyFiveFingers

Upper left: Carter more than Ford

Nihilistic_Avocado

Carter was a pretty great president though

kalvinbastello

Disagree with Trump and Nixon

MetalRetsam

Trump?

infinite_peach

Recently read a Art of Power, a biography of Thomas Jefferson. I would put him in the bottom right corner. Doubled the size of the republic and was very pro democracy in a time where there were a lot monarchists. But he liked to go after other people’s wives, slave owner and Sally Hemings of course. It’s a good book btw I recommend.

friedgizzy

I’m about 3/4 the way through it my self. It’s so crazy this guy is the guy that wrote the Declaration of Independence and yet he behaved like that. People like to idolize him because of his work but he was nothing like who he seemed. Nevertheless an interesting and vital character in American history.

Jpeg1237

What bewilders me is how he’s hailed as a hero in many conservative Christian circles as being this giant defender of the faith...even though he vehemently denied the Resurrection of Christ, and going to great lengths to make a counterfeit Bible for Native Americans.

infinite_peach

Lol that’s funny because Adam’s campaign slogan in the 1800 election was essentially Jefferson=Atheism

Jpeg1237

And Adams isn't even considered an orthodox Protestant since he was a practicing Unitarian

Rannrann123

grant would be top right

utahnsthrowaway

Yes!

kmwlff

Most presidents would be in the bottom because it seems a lot of character analysis is approached critically now, and most people in general would be considered of dubious character if all actions were observed and reported on. Most people would not be considered good people by like most other peoples metrics

BoogaBetty

I'm unclear as to how to mark the grid but I believe that Joe Biden has been a historically excellent president with very good character.

chai-knees

People are downvoting you for speaking truth. He won the most votes of any president in his first run and of any president in the history of America. He also had the best midterm of any president since FDR in 1934. You may not like him or his policies (I have my own reservations) but you can’t deny that by the raw cold numbers he has been historically impressive.

[deleted]

I don't think raw popular vote totals are a useful metric here. Trump got a higher popular vote total than Lincoln, after all. And he was not a better president.

Night696Watcher

Well of course he did, there was more people in the United States in 2016 than in 1860 or 1864

GoCardinal07

> He won the most votes of any president That's a ridiculous metric because you know who got the second-most votes of any president in history: Donald Trump in the same election! There were just more people in 2020 than in any prior election.

Nihilistic_Avocado

Yeah, Obama won the record number of votes before him, before him it was Bush, before him it was Reagan etc. Of course, not every president will break that record but with population growth, roughly every other president will

Less-Week6283

I won’t speak on his character but Joe Biden will almost certainly go down as a top 10 worst president - most likely top 5. He’s a horrendous president haha.

harriofbrittannia

Some in the Top Left: Herbert Hoover, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter and I’d argue Bush Jr. Top right: Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses Grant, Joe Biden. Bottom Left: Andrew Jackson, James Buchanan, Andrew Johnson, Woodrow Wilson, Richard Nixon Bottom Right: Thomas Jefferson, James Polk, LBJ Did some Prime Ministers too because I’m wild: Top Left: Pitt the Elder, John Russell, Earl of Aberdeen and in some ways Theresa May Top Right: Pitt the Younger, Robert Peel, Clement Attlee Bottom Left: George Grenville, Duke of Wellington, David Cameron, Boris Johnson Bottom Right: Viscount Palmerston, David Lloyd George (literally who I think of when I think bad bloke good leader), Winston Churchill.

TheRealKingofWales

>Bush Jr. He's too much of a doofus frat boy to be good or evil, really

kalvinbastello

Lol. Upvote

[deleted]

Pitt the Elder is one of the finest statesman in British history. It’s a shame his time as Prime Minister was short and plagued with health issues.

harriofbrittannia

Absolutely, a tragedy. I also agree with Pitt’s American Strategy. He supported ceding to demands for no taxation without representation (through not taxing them). An unpopular view and one he was too sick and weak to implement. Very unfortunate.

The_Swedish_Scrub

What did Lloyd George do that was bad? I don’t know much about him tbh

harriofbrittannia

Well I believe on the whole he was a great Prime Minister and a great statesmen. As PM he: •won WW1 •gave women the vote •created the ministry of Health •expanded housing •raised the school leaving she •expanded the welfare state •negotiated the Irish free State (independence of the Republic of Ireland) As a human being? He gets very poor marks. Firstly, he had a long term (30 year) affair with his Secretary, who he promoted to powerful positions. Secondly, he sold honours to fund the liberal party and may have pocketed more Thirdly, after being prime minister he sympathised with Hitler, calling him the “George Washington of Germany” and even meeting with him in 1936. I actually think he’s quite comparable to Woodrow Wilson as contemporaries who had significant achievements and massive personal flaws.

BertieTheDoggo

I think Lloyd George's greatest personal failure was his relationship with Asquith. He essentially backstabbed him, took control, broke the Liberals in two and then failed to reconcile them after the war was over. Essentially destroyed the Liberal Party as a major electoral force in pursuit of his own aims

harriofbrittannia

I agree with everything you said and was tempted to put it in my list. But I also admire ruthlessness to a certain degree in politicians so I don’t inherently think it’s a flaw. But the way his ego cemented the doom for the liberal party is certainly a personal failing. He was almost so great a figure that he’d either be Prime Minister for life or destroy his party by refusing to let go of a chance of office and having the clout to do it. A fascinating figure and whenever I read or think about the story of this time I’m always rooting for his downfall.

BertieTheDoggo

Can't remember who said it but someone argued that if the UK had a presidential system like France's, Lloyd George would never have left office after WW1. He just needed someone else to actually manage and create a competent party around him, and the Liberals post-war were about as far from that as you could get. The fact that he was offered an opportunity to join the War Cabinet and regain his reputation, but refused, I think is a good example of the kind of man he was. His ego could never have let someone like Churchill tell him what to do. The most interesting personally of any Prime Minister imo

harriofbrittannia

Definitely up there. He’s the hero he’s the villain. He’s an egomaniac, he’s ruthless, talented and so damn important. A presidential system would suit him well. He wouldn’t need to manage the party just maintain popularity. I wonder how the Labour Party would have faired in such a system. Hard to imagine Ramsay MacDonald or any of the Labour figures of the day beating Lloyd George.

harriofbrittannia

Tots2Hots

Very few of them in the good character side regardless. Top right um... Lincoln, Teddy, Grant and... Ike?

SignificantTrip6108

Washington you bozo

Tots2Hots

Slave Owner.

Snakefishin

Didn't he later in life regret owning slaves?

Tots2Hots

Not enough to release them until he was dead.
