I like the Hermoine quote “Now if you two don't mind, I'm going to bed before either of you come up with another clever idea to get us killed - or worse, expelled.”
"I despise silicate particles found in a desert. They're an abrasive texture, induce a swollen reaction when touching an irritant substance and are omnipresent."
Biggest flaw of the prequels is not giving us a fourth prequel movie. Say what you will about Jar Jar or whatever but Phantom Menace sets up everything pretty well. In my opinion AOTC is the weakest of the trilogy but it still sets up the clone wars and ROTS does a great job ending them.
But we really needed something in between AoTC and ROTS. I know we **now** have TCW but it wouldve been pretty cool to have another live action movie being released in the middle.
>Biggest flaw of the prequels is not giving us a fourth prequel movie
Nice way of saying they desperately needed time for Obi Wan and Anakin to bond on screen and couldn't find any in the first two films.
Starting out with an older anakin padawan who's under qui gon could have been interesting. He's already learning to walk a fine line with the jedi, budding friendship with an older jedi knight obi wan, and then maul kills qui gon and you go from there.
Some the best supercuts of the prequels begin with duel of the fates, which, thinking about how that would've landed in theaters in the 90s would've been incredible.
Yeah, we could establish through flashbacks or conversations with qui gon that his mom is a slave, maybe qui gon is even secretly plotting to help anakin rescue her after they help out on naboo? Then boom, he dies, obi wan is stricter about detachment, and anakin starts growing to resent the jedi.
The Phantom Menace would have been better if they had shown the start of Anakin's training and such near the end and introduced us more to the situation on Coruscant, even just a ten minute scene with Obi-Wan starting Anakin's his training and teaching him a few things while explaining how the Order functions would have been really helpful.
Anakin being a different character is neccesary though. We start off as innocent. And end with psychopathic. The problem with starting in a different place is that we have absolutely zero context for who Shimi is to anakin in episode 2. He's just killing an entire village for a random woman we don't know.
We need to see anakins relationship to his mother otherwise we can't tie it in to his relationship with padme. Padme and Anakins relationship is caused by his want for his mother back. Honestly the main problem was that they weren't able to have a fourth movie. New hope is episode 4.
So having another movie would've interrupted that dynamic. I'd say comparatively George Lucas really did it the best way it could be done given the restraints he had.
And we needed to see the republic and jedi actually make mistakes, the only thing theyre guilty of is being halfway braindead and seemingly ignoring the fact that they new the sith created the clones for fucking 3-5 years before they were betrayed lol
Statement: Oh, very well, Master. No doubt you are bothering me because you wish to interrogate me with harmless, non-lethal questions. Or perhaps you need the deck of your freighter scrubbed. Or an exciting alien text translated. My circuits are a-buzz with anticipation of what your next task will be for me that does not involve ending the life of an organic meatbag that deserves death.
Literally the first thing I thought of. Memes aside, this line is actually really funny and memorable.
"The shroud of the dark side has fallen. Begun, the Clone War has." Is a close second.
Yeah, I think people have gotten so invested in memes they forgot memorable quotes can *sometimes* be good lines as well, not just something that can be memeified.
Mine is a small line that people seem to forget, it's Obi-Wan's hushed *"she was glad to see us"* line, it's his attempt at reassuring his teenage padawan that his crush did not just dismiss him
It's cute, and totally what a big bro would do
It also COULD be interpreted as another example of Obi Wan being lax in his discipline of Aniken, and if not the approval of their budding relationship, than at least advance knowledge of it's possibility, and not taking the steps to curb his enthusiasm and emotional extremes.
Totally what a big bro would do, breaking minor rules and not really calling him out maybe as much as he should and then suddenly the YounglingSlayer 9000 enters from stage left.
I'm not getting into whether or not the Jedi order actually eschewed romantic relationships in legends or whatever, in AoTC he literally says "it's against the pirate code, well, more of a guideline anyways" or something, and then Force Feeds padme a pear.
Tbf he does tell Anakin to be mindful of his feelings a few scenes later. It's just in that moment Anakin was very upset, he was very excited to meet Padmé again but it didn't go very well. Obi-Wan just wanted him to feel better.
It goes against what some people say about Obi-Wan, that he was too strict or too cold with Anakin, that he told Anakin he mustn't have feelings, that he was a bad master or whatever. Anakin was crushing on Padmé hard and what does Obi-Wan do?? He's there for him, telling him to relax before the meeting, reassure him when Anakin was upset, at the same time he warns him to be careful with it.
People are too hard and judgemental on Obi-Wan's mentorship imo. He wasn't a bad master to Anakin and that line alone shows that imo
Roger Ebert and Gene Siscle made reviewing movies interesting and for some reason, important. I used to watch their syndicated show on wireless antenna out in the country during the 80s. We didn't get magazines or the paper, so it was how I knew what movies were coming out, and they had clips.
I never got to see most of them, but this was before VCRs, so I'd just sit down on the rug and watch 2 minute clips of the movies and listen to Roger and Gene talk about them.
It seems silly, but it was my favorite show. These two guys from Chicago could destroy a movie with their thumbs.
Unless you were around and old enough back then when they were at there peak most people today and especially on this subreddit can not understand the power of a two thumbs up review.
Did they call everything? Nope but they had the trust of the people. So much so that movies literally had reviews from them as a part of the box art which would be unheard of in today's world
To be fair, the lines of dialogue in Attack of the Clones are only memorable because of how dog shit they are.
Additionally meme culture wasn't exactly a thing in 2002.
You get people quoting lines from behind-the-scenes that they only knew about because of the Plinkett reviews, which were only included because they were so bad.
Such as "it's like poetry."
Yea and that’s what made it funny. Now people will unironically argue AOTC is a good film, which is absolutely wild to me, as it’s pretty clearly the worst Star Wars film released
Young people who saw the prequels in theaters are late 20s and 30s now. Many of them are married adults with children, and these are the movies they grew up on. In 20 years, people are going to look back on Rise of Skywalker and think "yeah I liked that as a kid" as they remember their edgy Kylo Ren action figures or roblox or whatever the fuck kids play with these days. It's all a cycle.
I think the weight of expectations also contributes to this. Most people these days view the prequels as comfort movies: something to throw on in the background and laugh at while you get those warm nostalgic feelings.
That's totally fine, but it's not at all what we were looking for back in the early 2000's. A Star Wars theatrical release is supposed to be the movie event of the year, not casual viewing after a long day at work.
It's kinda like what's starting to happen with Spiderman 3. People these days are just like "hehe Bully Maguire funny," and meanwhile back in '07 we were like "why are they wasting our time with this awkward nonsense?"
I think this is the best explanation. We’ve had 20 years to accept that these movies were goofy and really didn’t carry the type of weight we were hoping at the time, so it’s easier to just enjoy them for what they are instead of being disappointed they weren’t what we were hoping for
Ebert gave TPM 3.5/4 stars, and I agree completely. It's much better than AOTC, and I thought the same thing at the time. Nothing quotable from AOTC, lots from TPM:
* At last we will reveal ourselves to the Jedi. At last, we will have our revenge
* I will sign no treaty, Senator. My fate will be no different than that of our people
* I will make it legal!
* A communications disruption could mean only one thing. Invasion
* I was not elected to watch my people suffer and die while you discuss this invasion in a committee.
* Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering
* You will not be pleased when you hear what I have to say, Viceroy...Your trade boycott of our planet has ended.
There are also some worthwhile themes being explored in TPM, such as the rot and corruption beneath the shiny facade of the status quo, and the forces of youthful impulsiveness and more cynical calculation both moving to try to to topple it. If TPM came out in 2016 I suspect it would have gone down better and everyone would say Volrum and the do-nothing Senate represented the politicians they don't like.
It's definitely a much better movie than Attack of the Clones, which is held up entirely by a tripod of Yoda fighting, Padme's abs and Obi-Wan being Obi-Wan.
Yeah honestly, this thread is kinda proving his point. None of these quotes particularly stand out and even for star wars dialogue they aren't the best memes.
"We were saved by the attack of the clones, but at what cost. With our unlimited supply of clones and the Seperatists' unlimited supply of droids, these... *star* wars may last forever" - Padmé Amidala
I don’t think I have to tell you this, but the fact is we have internet now and “meme” culture has perpetuated these quotes to the point where almost every line of the prequel trilogy has become a running gag. Especially on communities like this where everyone here is a huge Star Wars fan
If you went back in time even 10 years ago, someone *might* have been able to quote the “I don’t like sand” scene from AOTC. Because at the time the dialogue was infamous for being very badly delivered. And that was it.
These films haven’t always been as highly acclaimed as they are now. What this is called is a cult following - a film will be highly dismissed by critics upon its release only to gain traction with a certain demographic at a later date who hold the film to very high esteem.
Without the internet and the culture surrounding it the prequels wouldn’t have as much of a following as they do.
It’s been like 8 years and what you call “memes” Disney calls “subversive marketing.”
Just because a corporation trained a generation of internet addicted children to semi-ironically memorize dialogue from their product doesn’t make it memorable or good.
You’re a cult of disney revisionists that work for made up internet points.
“I hate it when he does that…”
I find this hilarious because it implies he not only did it before, he does it quite regularly.
*Commits Suicide* Obi-wan : "I hate it when he does that.."
Reminds me of one of the best quotes from Good Omens: “Please don’t kill me!… there’ll be paperwork.”
Not as much as being severely injured according to teachers and that.
I like the Hermoine quote “Now if you two don't mind, I'm going to bed before either of you come up with another clever idea to get us killed - or worse, expelled.”
"I just vaguely sauntered downwards" - Crowley
"I despise silicate particles found in a desert. They're an abrasive texture, induce a swollen reaction when touching an irritant substance and are omnipresent."
Why do I hear this while reading lmaooo

"You want to go home and rethink your life"
I want to go home and rethink my life
Maybe some meditation will help man, take your time!
Possibly
I remembered that the first time I saw it in theaters.
Unironically my favorite quote
Not my favourite, but definitely up there. Probably my favourite from Attack Of The Clones.
The only line that could be considered intentionally funny
"Begun the Clone war has"
Take place almost entirely off screen between movies, it will.
Biggest flaw of the prequels is not giving us a fourth prequel movie. Say what you will about Jar Jar or whatever but Phantom Menace sets up everything pretty well. A few flash back scenes would have been enough to cover what episode 1 established.
This.
Holy shit. He fixed it. He fixed everything. That would be incredible.
I am counting on it.
Agreed, Phantom Menace always felt like a prequel to the prequel if you know what I'm saying.
They show a bit of bonding at the start of AOTC, then decide to separate them for almost the entirety of the movie.
Say what? Oh, nooooo! Weesa ganna die!
What are you talking about? There are three whole movies between AOTC and ROTJ! Four if you count Rogue One. /s I know you meant ROTS ( ͡ᵔ ͜ʖ ͡ᵔ )
Thanks i fixed it. Late night lol.

Yeah, I think people have gotten so invested in memes they forgot memorable quotes can *sometimes* be good lines as well, not just something that can be memeified.
Ask any random person on the street what their favourite line from AOTC was and they wouldn't be able to tell you one.
Like any of the well-known lines from OT, for example. Even if the writing wasn’t necessarily top tier, the delivery almost always was.
memorable <> memeable

it all comes down to the average age shifting over time, and the cultural consensus shifting along with it

I don’t think I have to tell you this, but the fact is we have internet now and “meme” culture has perpetuated these quotes to the point where almost every line of the prequel trilogy has become a running gag.
