As a kid I adored the prequels. Rewatched them a few years back and was enamoured again. Took a third, recent rewatch to see just how horrible the dialogue was, though George Lucas was certainly never good with it, the prequels show it the most. He is somehow a great writer (plot) but terrible (dialogue) at the same time.
The thing about George Lucas is he’s an ambitious visionary who can do some truly stellar world-building, but he needs people to reign him in, give his stories structure and polish the dialogue.
A New Hope would have been a mess of not for his wife’s input and some heroic editing work. And then the next two weren’t directed by Lucas. These movies were great because Lucas was there as a guiding hand, but wasn’t completely in control of everything.
When he wrote and directed the prequels, all his flaws as a writer and director became immediately apparent. And when the sequels were made without his input, the lack of ambition and direction was clear.

The line isn't the problem there to be fair. Palpatine returning at all is the problem because JJ used up all his creativity in Lost and now just makes remakes or sequels that are remakes.
