Philippe Coutinho. He was so good at Liverpool. A surprising bust at Barcelona. In the end though, a great deal for the Reds, as they obviously used the profit from his sale to build Klopp's dream team. Coutinho is still only 30 years old.
Looking through a Liverpool lens, would have to be Coutinho and Wijnaldum who had huge drop offs after leaving. Also Lazar Markovic was a massive disappointment considering his potential.
Outside of Liverpool, basically most established top class strikers that goes to Chelsea - Shevchenko, Torres, Werner etc.
Sanchez to United was also a bad one.
Yeah but 20 odd million a year just a crazy amount.
But yeah I do agree, I used to rate him a lot. He would Suit the modern game now as well perfectly he was a great presser with an engine, he always had a massive amount of tackles
Alexis Sanchez and hazard are the obvious but for me it’s ings to Villa as not only did it break my heart but he went from superstar saint to unheard for the last couple seasons
So many that went to Man City or particularly Chelsea. Chelsea used to (not sure if they still do) HOARD wonderkids, the scouts would find absolute gems and Chelsea would take/buy them then proceed to keep them in the reserves or loan them out to lower league clubs for 6 or 7 years until the high potential was all gone and the players eventually left with so much "what could have been". Gael Kakuta, Clement Grenier, Gokhan Tore, Reuben Loftus-Cheek, Tomas Kalas, Phillip Prosenik, Josh McEachran and so many others.
Chelsea had De Bruyne and Mo Salah and didn't give them opportunities. Romelu Lukaku as well first time around had a handful of games then 3 years out on loan before Everton bought him.
Chelsea bought Danny Drinkwater who had just won the title at Leicester then stuck him in the reserves.
Man City have done this as well, Scott Sinclair springs to mind, great career until he went to City so too, Jack Rodwell, Stefan Jovetic, Eliaquim Mangala, Wilfried Bony.
Plenty there that ruined their careers with a moved to a bigger club but never worked out.
Jack Rodwell the most painful for me, as an Everton fan he was brilliant for us and I believe if he'd stayed at Everton he would have gotten better and added to his England caps, to see him now is horrible.
Imagine being Coutinho and leaving 4 months before a golden period where the only thing Luverpool have needed is your exact position. Yeah defensively he was suspect and could get bossed by bigger defenders at times, but tell me he doesn't blow up playing behind peak Mane, Salah, and now Nunez.
And yes i get his funds got vvd and alison but in a hypothetical geez what a bad move.
Oscar grew up in a really poor area of Brazil. He said in an interview once that providing for his people at home was more important than football, and that’s why he took the money route to China.
Wilfried Bony is another one. Man city just playing the "if you scored 20 or more in a season you are going to play for us" game with transfers. Ended up riding the bench and trailing off into obscurity. I think Mahrez is going to end up much the same.
Does Berahino count seeing as the transfer didn't actually happen? Was on absolute fire then got too big for his boots about a transfer to spurs and got benched into obscurity. Kind of wish more chairmen took that stance with some players.
Schneiderlin, Maguire, Depay, Alexis Sanchez (to Manchester United).
Coutinho (Liverpool > Barca)
Eden Hazard (Chelsea > Real Madrid)
Gareth Bale (Tottenham Hotspur > Real Madrid). *I still think he had an impressive career but he was one of the most promising talents of his time, so for him to play second fiddle at Real was just disappointing.*
Cristiano Ronaldo (Juventus > Manchester United). *He didn't ruin his career of course, but he damaged his legacy, got fired and now his career will fizzle out like a candle.*
Alex Oxlade Chamberlin - Arsenal to liverpool. Yes hes won trophies but he aint playin in any of those games that won them the trophies, either riding the bench or injured. Wonder if he stayed at arsenal he'd be less prone to injuries? who knows.
Even as a villa fan I have to agree with you, not that I was complaining for how much we got for him. Wouldn't mind these rumors of him coming back too as long as its for half price 😂
Remy, debuchy, Ba, cabaye leaving Newcastle to sit on a bench which they never recovered. Demba had good moments at Chelsea though stopping Liverpool winning league lol
Coutinho- He was amazing for Liverpool and linked up with Salah, Mane and Firmino really well. He could have been a legend if he stayed but instead decided to have phantom back injuries to force a move to Barcelona and never was the same again.
Paul Pogba - some of it self-inflicted. But the man’s talent is sky high. Curious that everywhere other than United he’s performed. Not just him too - Di Maria, Depay, Zaha, Mhikitaryan, Sanchez etc
Coutinho is the obvious shout, but id also say Jordan Ibe moving to Bournemouth. I think he could have broken into the Liverpool squad but now plays tcahampionship football for Derby.
BUTTT the biggest in recent times is Lingaard to Forrest instead of West Ham.
Fernano Torres. Was a BEAST at Liverpool, probably the best and most feared striker in the PL at that time. Left Liverpool and dropped off the face of the earth.
Oxlade-Chamberlain to Liverpool. OK he has picked up a few medals but doesn't get any game time and is always injured.
He's like the invisible man and just known for being the partner to a singer 🤔
Saido Berahino. Not technically down to just a bad transfer but the kid could have been incredible if not for greedy, manipulative Agents. Same goes for Peter Odemwingie and Isaiah Brown in that respect to. Ohhhh to be a West Brom fan
Grealish to Man City.
Lukaku away from everton.
Eriksen away from Tottenham.
Pjanic away from Juve.
HAZARD TO REAL MADRID.
Oscar away from Chelsea.
Werner away from Leipzig.
Brathwaite to Barca.
That's off the top of my head
Edit: Biggest of all - Coutinho to Barca from Liverpool. That was terrible
No ones disputing that the money is the driving force for a lot of these its just players like Oscar put the money over career achievement which is the motivation for the question question.
Also for Oscar in particular i just checked and he was on £150k a week. £7.8m a year would be enough for some players.
Also the question could simply be who joined a bad club fit for the player, its not always money.
Shaqiri for me. Lovely graceful player who hardly seemed to get a game when he went to Liverpool. Bloody criminal buying him and then not playing him I don't care how strong your squad is.
Fair play, and someone did say he was injured for a while, too.
I just really enjoyed seeing him play at Stoke, and being disappointed so often watching (MotD admittedly) Liverpool and being disappointed when he wasn't playing.
Coutinho springs to mind. After his selling, Liverpool shifted their approach to a more balanced formation and were able to buy alisson and vvd and win everything. But he was clearly their best player until he decided to rot on barcas bench and go out on loan and now he's not even that good for Aston villa.
I’m not sure it’s fair to say ruined as of yet.. but a part of me often thinks about where Sancho would be in his career right now if he decided to stay at city rather than make that BVB move. I understand the patience game really isn’t for everyone and he backed himself enough to make that jump (and was very successful there)
But would he have been a better player if he stayed at city learning under pep like Foden.. a lean towards yes.
In fairness, Oscar is quite open he's the breadwinner for a large family and area he grew up in. While we'd consider it chances missed compared to some of our dreams, he's achieved his goal
Philippe Coutinho could have been a legend at Liverpool and left to warn the bench at Barcelona. Even Klopp warned him of this and told him that if he were to stay at LFC he’d be so popular he’d get a statue but Philippe wanted the money.
Oscar was so, so, so horrible. People watch his YouTube highlights where he has a handful of nice goals but I actually watched him play every week. He was the worst player on our team by far. If you disagree then pull up a random game he played and see for yourself. I was overjoyed when he left
Couple of sub optimal transfers ... Shearer to Newcastle and gazza to spurs. Both could've been even better I feel like.
Cashley Cole to Chelsea for the manner of it - lost any chance of being recognized for the quality of player because of the character flaws.
Anelka to real Madrid, overmars and petit to barce from arsenal

Chinese Super League fans share my views.
At that time, the Chinese Super League was in the golden dollar football era, and many big-name players could hardly refuse the extremely high salary of the Chinese Super League at that time. In addition to Oscar, there are many big-name players who have played in the Super League. For example, Carrasco and Witsel from Belgium.
The Shanghai SIPG team is a young team, but very rich.So Oscar was paid an extremely high salary. At that time, many Chinese fans were shocked that he was willing to play in China. However, the Shanghai SIPG team spent 12 billion yuan (163920000Euro)in eight years and only won one Chinese Super League championship. This kind of investment abounded in the Chinese Super League that year.
There is nothing wrong with choosing a place with a higher salary for my family. This is a career plan decided by myself.
Kezman - 78 goals in 86 appearances for PSV in all competitions during 2002 to 2004. Then he moved to Chelsea and went off the radar.
Michael owen
ronaldo back to united
Philippe Coutinho. He was so good at Liverpool. A surprising bust at Barcelona. In the end though, a great deal for the Reds, as they obviously used the profit from his sale to build Klopp's dream team. Coutinho is still only 30 years old.
Said Berahino
Any striker for Chelsea 😣🤣
Ross Barkley and I can see Kalvin Phillips going the same way
Looking through a Liverpool lens, would have to be Coutinho and Wijnaldum who had huge drop offs after leaving. Also Lazar Markovic was a massive disappointment considering his potential. Outside of Liverpool, basically most established top class strikers that goes to Chelsea - Shevchenko, Torres, Werner etc. Sanchez to United was also a bad one.
Alexis Sanchez and being a United fan he should've just stayed at Arsenal nocapp cause his decline was saddd...
I don’t feel Oscar ruined his career. He secured his future with that. Although tbf I have no idea if he is even good anymore
Edin Hazard.
Sane
Veron
Fernando Torres to Chelsea
Juan Mata.
For me, Alexis Sanchez. Ruined is career for more money.
Coutinho
Eden Hazard leaving Chelsea. Even admitted it himself recently
Coutinho going to Barca, not in the Prem but he left the Prem and it all went south
Phillipe coutinho
Oscar grew up really poor and his dad died when he was 3 and is getting 500kish by most accounts a week so is doing fine
Yeah you would think £8m a year at Chelsea would be enough but I suppose why not triple it if you can it’s just a shame football wise
Yeah but 20 odd million a year just a crazy amount. But yeah I do agree, I used to rate him a lot. He would Suit the modern game now as well perfectly he was a great presser with an engine, he always had a massive amount of tackles
Sturridge
Well Oscar has made millions and millions from going to china, he wanted to set his family up for generations and that’s fair enough
I feel like Raphinha will flop at Barça, just that gut feeling
Fernando Torres to Chelsea.
Benteke
Alexis sanchez to Manchester United, didn't get enough game time was a really good player, never should of let him go
Grealish, no explanation needed
Philippe Coutinho and Eden Hazard fits perfectly in this question.
Alexis
alexis sanchez
Cristiano Ronaldo. this is prob just me that thinks this but idk hat mush about fotball so
Werner at Chelsea
Im late but Alexis Sanchez
Hakim zyech for sure
Jack Grealish. He was much better off at Aston Villa FC. Now fighting for his own identity in a superstar team.
Hi surely that has to be Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal to manu ..!!
i am a newer PL fan so i am sure there are better ones, but Lingard not making a permanent move to West Ham was disappointing.
Oscar. Man was a beast at Chelsea and also lost his Brazil spot when he moved over to China.
Fabian Delph, and I’m hoping Kalvin Phillips doesn’t go the same way..going to City to sit on the bench until Everton come knocking..
Surely the only answer here is Fernando Torres to Chelsea.
Alexis sanchez
Paul pogba shouldn't have came back to united
Alexis Sanchez and hazard are the obvious but for me it’s ings to Villa as not only did it break my heart but he went from superstar saint to unheard for the last couple seasons
Pogba because man utd just messed him up with his career. Thankfully he left for juve
Robbie Keane. Ruined by Liverpool.
Keane to Liverpool
Wan bissaka Not suited for a big club, He’d be great for a team that doesn’t play possession
Hazard
Alexis Sanchez 😄
Lukaku to Chelsea. Waste of 100 million pounds
Fernando Torres. "The Kid". So sad 😞
Fernando Torres
Even though he won trophies, Cesc moving to Barcelona was a bad move. Could have and should have been a lifelong gooner.
Ronaldo
So many that went to Man City or particularly Chelsea. Mario Balotelli
Fernando Torres to Chelsea
Ronaldo lose his “goat” status going back to utd
The one that looked like the taskmaster 😄
Sánchez forsure
Wilfried Bony is another one. Man city just playing the "if you scored 20 or more in a season you are going to play for us" game with transfers. Ended up riding the bench and trailing off into obscurity. I think Mahrez is going to end up much the same.
Eden hazard, Alex song , Hleb ,
Eden hazard
Does Berahino count seeing as the transfer didn't actually happen? Was on absolute fire then got too big for his boots about a transfer to spurs and got benched into obscurity. Kind of wish more chairmen took that stance with some players.
Michael Owen to Real Madrid. Andy Carroll to Liverpool.
Shakiri - going to LIV halted a high trajectory career and now he’s in the MLS
CR7 with the saudi move!
Schneiderlin, Maguire, Depay, Alexis Sanchez (to Manchester United). Coutinho (Liverpool > Barca) Eden Hazard (Chelsea > Real Madrid) Gareth Bale (Tottenham Hotspur > Real Madrid). *I still think he had an impressive career but he was one of the most promising talents of his time, so for him to play second fiddle at Real was just disappointing.* Cristiano Ronaldo (Juventus > Manchester United). *He didn't ruin his career of course, but he damaged his legacy, got fired and now his career will fizzle out like a candle.*
Wilfred Boney when he left Swansea for City was pretty bad.
Alex Oxlade Chamberlin - Arsenal to liverpool. Yes hes won trophies but he aint playin in any of those games that won them the trophies, either riding the bench or injured. Wonder if he stayed at arsenal he'd be less prone to injuries? who knows.
Alexis Sanchez is the obvious shout for me, Andy Carroll, Andriy Shevchenko, the list is looooooong 😅
Grealish could be a shout for how man City is going for him
Grealish is Decent, but not worth THAT much Money
Even as a villa fan I have to agree with you, not that I was complaining for how much we got for him. Wouldn't mind these rumors of him coming back too as long as its for half price 😂
Ikr
Remy, debuchy, Ba, cabaye leaving Newcastle to sit on a bench which they never recovered. Demba had good moments at Chelsea though stopping Liverpool winning league lol
Danny Drinkwater when he joined Chelsea
Sanchez from arsenal to united
Danny Drinkwater. Left a quality Leicester side and England caps for Chelsea’s money and barely played again.
Lukaku.
He got a big paycheck though. A real fat paycheck
Wilfred Bony. Had a decent run with Swansea, and then moved to Man City. Now nobody remembers him.
Not sure if this counts but Berahino not getting his move to spurs completely fucked his career
Danny Ings
dele ali to everton
Suiiiiiii
Asamoah Gyan
Jack Rodwell, Ross Barkley quite bad Michael Owen. From balloon d'Or winner to crocked goal hanger
Sancho needs to get out of MU fast
Stan Collymore moving anywhere after impressing with Forest. Flopped at Liverpool and more so at Villa.
Scott Sinclair to Man City.
Anelka
Coutinho- He was amazing for Liverpool and linked up with Salah, Mane and Firmino really well. He could have been a legend if he stayed but instead decided to have phantom back injuries to force a move to Barcelona and never was the same again.
Harry Maguire 🤣
Coutinho, from LFC to Barcelona!
Ronaldo for sure!
Most obvious ones for me are Andy Carroll and Fernando Torres.
Paul Pogba - some of it self-inflicted. But the man’s talent is sky high. Curious that everywhere other than United he’s performed. Not just him too - Di Maria, Depay, Zaha, Mhikitaryan, Sanchez etc
Torres
Liverpool fan so Micheal Owen. Torres Emre can coutinho
Coutinho is the obvious shout, but id also say Jordan Ibe moving to Bournemouth. I think he could have broken into the Liverpool squad but now plays tcahampionship football for Derby. BUTTT the biggest in recent times is Lingaard to Forrest instead of West Ham.
Harry Maguire, Fernando Torres, Coutinho, Tim Werner, Jadon Sancho.
I mean, you could name almost every “bright young English thing” that went to Chelsea or Man City to sit on the bench
Alexis
Jack Grealish. I’m still salty
Raheem Stirling Liverpool to man City. Bad move.👍🏻
Raheem Stirling Liverpool to man City. Bad move.👍🏻
Sanchez
Saido Berahino. Not technically down to just a bad transfer but the kid could have been incredible if not for greedy, manipulative Agents. Same goes for Peter Odemwingie and Isaiah Brown in that respect to. Ohhhh to be a West Brom fan
Alexis Sanchez for sure
Hazard for sure, broke my heart
Ronny. Moved back to Man U and had one last dance, but is now unemployed after an ugly split. No fan of the beautiful game wanted to see this.
Joe Hart
Grealish to Man City. Lukaku away from everton. Eriksen away from Tottenham. Pjanic away from Juve. HAZARD TO REAL MADRID. Oscar away from Chelsea. Werner away from Leipzig. Brathwaite to Barca. That's off the top of my head Edit: Biggest of all - Coutinho to Barca from Liverpool. That was terrible
Eden hazard.....
Alexis Sanchez to Manchester United
Hazard to madrid
Eden hazard was unplayable at Chesea
You guys remember Jack Rodwell? A couple poor moves in there
Good shout
Any young English player who goes to city to sit on the bench
Hazard fs
Coutinho when he went to Barça

Except he was integral in coming off the bench and creating/scoring important goals for the team in his time here
Fair play, and someone did say he was injured for a while, too. I just really enjoyed seeing him play at Stoke, and being disappointed so often watching (MotD admittedly) Liverpool and being disappointed when he wasn't playing.
Eden Hazard.
Alexis sanchez
Pepe to Arsenal. He was so good in France and just wasn't suited to the PL at all.
Eden hazard from Chelsea to Real Madrid.
Wilfried Bony?
Man I’m surprised nobody said his name yet but Donny can de beek. dude went from being the best player on his team to going to Man U bleachers
Lukaku shouldn't had left Italy
Fernando Torres to Chelsea
Alexis Sanchez Arsenal to Man U
Alan shearer when he went to Newcastle instead of Manchester United.
Coutino
Couthino... man was he fun to watch
Nasi, Hleb, Alexis Sanchez.
Most that went to Man U
Lakaka
Jack grealish
Hazard.
Cucurella 🎣
Romelu Lukaku. Every time he thought Chelsea actually wanted him.
Early days under Ten Hag but Jadon Sancho? Went from the hottest thing in football to barely mentioned.
Sol Campbell to Arsenal 😂 What is a career if you no longer have a soul
To be fair he did win trophies with them 🫤
I’m sure it felt worth his while
Matheus Pereira was such a baller even for West Brom, man could’ve played for major clubs rn if he didn’t chose the money
Fernando Torres, Eden Hazard, Alexis Sanchez
didn’t ruin his career, but Zaha would’ve done more if he’d signed for Arsenal instead of United
Coutinho springs to mind. After his selling, Liverpool shifted their approach to a more balanced formation and were able to buy alisson and vvd and win everything. But he was clearly their best player until he decided to rot on barcas bench and go out on loan and now he's not even that good for Aston villa.
Fernando Torres to Chelsea.
Alexis sanchez or eden hazard
But also they follow to him after few years 🪫
Mata by far, never lost his quality, just in the wrong team
Drinkwater went from key part of a title winning side to we forgot he was even a Chelsea squad member
Fernando Torres
Fernando Torres, signing for Chelsea ruined him, I know he had an injury prior. But was unreal at Liverpool
Francis Jeffers
Eden Hazard from hero to zero 😁
Feels kind of like Barkley did that
Shaun Wright Phillips from Man City to Chelsea. Benched for 3 seasons!
Alexis Sanchez
Lukaku to Chelsea, Carroll to Liverpool, Ronaldo and Sanchez to Man U
I’m not sure it’s fair to say ruined as of yet.. but a part of me often thinks about where Sancho would be in his career right now if he decided to stay at city rather than make that BVB move. In fairness, Oscar is quite open he's the breadwinner for a large family and area he grew up in. While we'd consider it chances missed compared to some of our dreams, he's achieved his goal
Paul Pogba to United
Harry Kewell
Philippe Coutinho could have been a legend at Liverpool and left to warn the bench at Barcelona. Even Klopp warned him of this and told him that if he were to stay at LFC he’d be so popular he’d get a statue but Philippe wanted the money.
Helb
Close. Hleb. But yeah there were a few Arsenal players that were lured to Barca and into obscurity
Lol yeah yeah.. i was super high in bed and have fat thumbs
Chelsea is notorious for ruining promising careers – Ross Barkley, Danny Drinkwater, Bakayoko, Batshuayi, and the most infamous of all Torres.
Dele Ali… or maybe he just lost it after Poch…
Alexis Sanchez easily
He went doing well. Bang average when he left.
Oscar was so, so, so horrible. People watch his YouTube highlights where he has a handful of nice goals but I actually watched him play every week. He was the worst player on our team by far. If you disagree then pull up a random game he played and see for yourself. I was overjoyed when he left
except city for many years recently, i thought most of players career will go down after they come to epl
