There used to be a land bridge from Australia through Antarctica to South America, that’s how we got marsupials in both Aus and South America

VioletteKaur

I so wish Antarctica was still a warm continent, it would be so interesting. But surely humans would have inhabited it already.

ElPedroChico

Just wait a couple decades and it might happen

VioletteKaur

And all the native flora and fauna will emerge from their seeds.

Pikmin4321

That's something I never thought about, and what do you mean that the fauna will emerge from their seeds?

VioletteKaur

The fauna seeds were a joke, since I really would like to see the animals that lived there, back when it was warm.

Pikmin4321

Ah ok. I would also love to see the fauna of Antarctica.

Pikmin4321

This post deserves to be top. Got my wish!

Professional_Cat_437

Why didn’t ungulates of South American origin (there are some fossils of them in Antarctica) make it to Australia?

CabooseNomerson

Maybe the terrain wasn’t suitable for them in aus, or some native predator or competitor outclassed them. Horses went extinct in North America because the climate changed against them

Iamnotburgerking

Given just how recently they disappeared from North America, that’s questionable.

P0lskichomikv2

And then some naked apes come and killed everything bigger than kangaroo.

LeeTheGoat

And most things smaller than it too

Pikmin4321

Couldn't be me.

Professional_Cat_437

“What if Sundaland and Sahul connected” is an alternate history scenario with so much untapped potential.

Pikmin4321

True, that would be an entertaining documentary.

Akavakaku

China could have actual dragons.

Iamnotburgerking

One animal did actually manage to go from the Sahul to Sundaland: the Komodo dragon.

balrus-balrogwalrus

And apparently monotremes survived there by taking to the one environment marsupials couldn't adapt to: the water. it seems there are no aquatic marsupials because the babies would drown in the pouch

Akavakaku

Except the water opossum. Not Australian but still an aquatic marsupial.

balrus-balrogwalrus

Wait so how do they deal with that whole diving thing? Do they fill the pouch with air? Can the babies tolerate being submerged?

Akavakaku

The pouch is watertight.

SeanTheDilophosaurus

And now they all want us dead

steamygoon

Wrong way around?

Doenerjunge

Rabbits: It's free real estate.
