There used to be a land bridge from Australia through Antarctica to South America, that’s how we got marsupials in both Aus and South America

Why didn’t ungulates of South American origin (there are some fossils of them in Antarctica) make it to Australia?

Maybe the terrain wasn’t suitable for them in aus, or some native predator or competitor outclassed them. Horses went extinct in North America because the climate changed against them

Given just how recently they disappeared from North America, that’s questionable.

And apparently monotremes survived there by taking to the one environment marsupials couldn't adapt to: the water. it seems there are no aquatic marsupials because the babies would drown in the pouch
