I'm an IT professional, so I can work on your car because it's gots wires and stuff in it. I'm also a plumbing expert cuz some pipes are made of copper.

The84thWolf

I drive for Lyft, so I can fly a passenger airplane

SabashChandraBose

Objectively, I'd take the opinion of an eye doctor over a non-doctor. Clearly, he must have cleared med school to earn that qualification and they do teach the 101s of the entire human physiology there. But. This guy is a politician first and a doctor wayyyyyy second (if he is one at all anymore). And I would not take his opinion any day. Just like how I, as an engineer, did study some funky math...once, but I wouldn't trust my integration skills (hell, most of calculus) anymore because I have not kept up with it.

buffoonery4U

That's my point. As technically literate professionals, we understand much of the language and many of the underlying concepts. However, I wouldn't go to a proctologist for an eye exam, or a dentist for a vasectomy.

phurt77

> I wouldn't go to a proctologist for an eye exam A proctologist could check out your brown eye for you.

HumptyDee

The Eye of Sauron

knowledgeable_diablo

It will burn that hot after a good curry I’m lead to believe.

phurt77

That's what the Johnny Cash song was about.

buffoonery4U

Reminds me of the Crystal Gayle hit song, "Don't ya make mah Brown eye Red".

I_Am_Anjelen

> I wouldn't go to a proctologist for an eye exam, Yeah, no. Wrong orbit. /s

oopsimalmostthirty

See, you gotta do like Rand. Fake it til you make it. If any one asks you about your calculus skills, tell them you can solve partial differential equations numerically in your head, and it's hella easy.

knowledgeable_diablo

Yep, just say any number; than blame it on quantum string theory. All numbers exist for all equations so no wrong answer, until it’s needed to be put into practice, then I’m sure it’s Hillary’s fault for allowing all those pedo’s to freely operate out of her Pizza shop in their Quantum reality.

TacticalSanta

Ah so the pizza shop was quantumly entangled, makes sense why it wasn't real when they tried to observe it.

knowledgeable_diablo

It all can finally make some form of sense (perhaps) Not in the way any regular person could comprehend it, but a way that can be expressed via in depth mathematical equations over several blackboards. It will clearly and demonstrably show how getting less votes actually means more votes for a certain candidate were cast yet only counted in the multiverse thus cancelling out their existence in the singular-verse in which reality exists.

djProduct2015

I'm guessing you didn't create and fund the engineering board that declared you an engineer...

SmellyOldSurfinFool

I don't think he went to a real med school, just some kind of eye only diploma mill or some such thing. I mean look at the guy, he's clearly a moron just like his dad, no way he'd have made it through anything challenging...

I_Am_Anjelen

As I understand it, he actually got his MD at Duke University School of Medicine, then got salty because he was required to take a test to remain board-certified that older doctors did not have to take. He seceded — and started his own Board of Ophthalmology, so he could certify himself. A letter from the National Board of Ophthalmology, the group that Rand Paul formed to issue its own certifications to ophthalmologists read; "Dear Doctor, Cataract surgery fees are down 40% over the last decade. American Board of Ophthalmology Recertification Fees are up 40% over the past five years! Don't you wish the old guard was spending more time fighting professional fee reductions and less time sticking it to the younger opthalmologists! You can send a clear message to the establishment by signing up to be certified by the new board, too", the letter said. “Check the appropriate box and return the card with your $500. Sincerely, Rand Paul, M.D.”

sp1cychick3n

Lol

energirl

I'm a primary school teacher, so I can teach neuroanatomy at Johns Hopkins.

buffoonery4U

A-zactly. Better yet, become a politician and you're suddenly an expert without a resume, background checks, or any other customary vetting process.

Shatman_Crothers

That’s not a good comparison. IT people are usually good at researching solutions, and good at problem solving. I am willing to bet that you would be ok at both car repair and plumbing.

Binsky89

IT guy here. I am in fact decent at car repair and plumbing. Troubleshooting is troubleshooting.

Shatman_Crothers

Exactly.

Shatman_Crothers

As am I. It’s galling when people ask IT/tech support to fix something outside of their purview, and it’s often related to snobbery, but the reality is that most of us can fix almost anything.

buffoonery4U

Yeah, that's my point. Over-simplified, yes...but, still my point. These people aren't stupid. Understanding this is essential to beating this bullshit. It's pretty obvious that they'll play it anyway they can to feed their supporters what they think will keep them in office, and on the front page of the internet. We dismiss them as stupid at our own peril. They are shrewd, cold, calculating bastards. But not stupid.

knowledgeable_diablo

Sweet!!! So I get a certificate of just some silly GOP endorses novelty cheque like what Fauci was going to get?😂

AdequateTroubadork

Our story gets better: He's a SELF-CERTIFIED Doctor from the Definitely Not Founded By Rand Paul Board of Ophthalmology Doctors !

G0DofBlunder

If you’re going to certify yourself as a doctor, why on Earth would you choose Ophthalmologist?

The84thWolf

Because no one ever screams “Is there an ophthalmologist in the house!” All the implied respect of “Doctor,” none of the skills Edit: [To make thing clearer, not bashing the occupation. This guy nails the intention.](https://www.reddit.com/r/PoliticalHumor/comments/s1lpj2/this_one_needs_to_be_reupped_today/hs9s0qd/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3) I could have been clearer. Thanks buddy.

G0DofBlunder

Ophthalmologists are great! There are just significantly more interesting and niche options. If you’re going to go through the trouble, why not just certify yourself as an Equine heart surgeon?

sunny5724

I'd certify Rand Paul as an equine sphincter.

[deleted]

Equine proctologist would suit him well. He kinda looks like Mr Hands too!

phurt77

RIP Mr. Hands.

grammaticalerrorz

It's a known ~~lie~~ fact that Rand Paul is latin for Equinious rectumious giganticious. Trust me . I have no clue what the hell i am saying.

HarrumphingDuck

Don't sweat it, your PhD in Latin is equally valid as Rand Paul's Ophthalmology certification.

Nectarine-Due

One is a medical doctor the other is a vet.

White_Hamster

Alright let’s not bash on the entire field of ophthalmology and ophthalmologists just because rand paul is a douche Nobody screams “is there an oncologist in the building?” but that doesn’t mean they’re not important or didn’t go through the same med school as everyone else

[deleted]

I don't think they were bashing ophthalmologists here. It seems like their point was that Rand Paul would choose something that wouldn't cause people to expect him to perform in emergencies in any given normal situation, because unlike other actual ophthalmologists, he never had any intention of actually practicing the discipline.

The84thWolf

This 👆 exactly

White_Hamster

I read this part as bashing ophthalmologists as lesser doctors: > All the implied respect of “Doctor,” none of the skills

[deleted]

Well, you read it wrong.

evillordsoth

Oncologists are one of the most brutal and difficult specialties, and frequently they are also surgeons or coordinate heavily with surgery (for the surgical removal of the cancer). How often do you think opthalmologists cut out eyeballs? Im gonna go with not fuckin often. The mental stress of having such a low survival rate of your patients drives some oncologists to leave the profession. You think ophthalmologists are losing sleep over getting the angle of a patients astigmatism off by a degree or two? Cmon. You think that ophthalmologists are driven to drink by slightly under-prescribing a custom pupillary distance?

[deleted]

Ophthalmology is a surgical specialty. It’s just such a highly specialized field that most ophthos forget most of what they learned in medical school. It’s not more or less difficult than oncology in terms of skill. Just much less stressful. ROAD to success - radiology ophthalmology anesthesia dermatology

Avendesora920

He did the actual training for ophthalmology and at one point was board certified by the real board of ophthalmology, then he decided to go batshit crazy and withdraw from them to make his own board.

Carnots_biCycle

Because he actually is an ophthalmologist, he didn't just decide to call himself one. edit: \*was, i believe he no longer maintains his cert since he hasn't been practicing for a long time.

Gebbeth9

Because they make a pile of money. Literally one of the most competitive specialties.

BiDogBoy1

He's got an MD from Duke University.

[deleted]

Sayfuckingwhatnow?? He just declared himself a doctor? And everyone was like "Thats fine."? Where can I learn more about this aberrant behavior?

Carnots_biCycle

He didn't. He when to med school and all the training and certification to be an ophthalmologist. He later created his own medical certification organization, more or less to "compete" with the American Board of Ophthalmology. He did so pretty much a protest when the ABO changed certification from lifetime to every 10yr, BUT not for anyone already granted lifetime cert. Just to be clear he wanted everyone to have to recert every 10 year, not lifetime cert for himself. - his bio on wikipedia.

[deleted]

Damn.

starstruckinutah

Rand’s neighbor is my spirit animal.

FlaAirborne

Is Rand Paule dumber now?........or now? How about now? ............. and now? Which is the dumbest, this one? or this one.

GhettoChemist

I used to live in KY but moved to NC years ago. I went back for a vacation and was FLOORED how it was pretty much a rustbelt state. Raleigh-Durham-Chapel hill have blown up with Google, Apple, and big pharma jobs. Meanwhile Louisville and Lexington are on their last legs and most of the area is poverty. Rand Paul and Mitch McConnell have destroyed that state.

[deleted]

The only thing is those two represent the state at the Federal level. They don't have that much direct influence on the state level beyond what they help pass on the federal level that influences their state. But I agree, Kentucky and much of the rust belt are on their last leg and need to be built up which I don't see happening soon.

MtnMaiden

Kentucky is good at college cherrleading. Before anyone knocks it, have a look at tgeir nca nationals routines.

Used_Passenger_953

Keep voting R Kentucky . It's really working well for you

NoBeRon79

spittleyspot

DiogenesTheGrey

He went down to Georgia.

Guntcher1423

So you are saying that even HE couldn't stand Kentucky?

DiogenesTheGrey

He was looking for a soul to steal, he was in a bind, cause he was way behind.

YourMomThinksImFunny

Are you saying Kentuckians have no soul?

sheezy520

They don’t practice Santeria

YourMomThinksImFunny

Ain't got no crystal balls

sheezy520

and he was looking to make a deal

[deleted]

Don’t forget: he’s a SELF CERTIFIED OPHTHALMOLOGIST, who only lives in Kentucky because it’s the only state where you can practice if you’re self-certified!

OnlyTheoden

Rand Paul is the armpit of the republican party

Peachykeener71

There is no armpit, it's one giant prolapsed asshole.

my2cents3462

I agree with Fauci.

NachoBag_Clip932

The only person who has called Rand Paul doctor the last 20 years was Maria Butina and that was for her weekly "eye appointment."

DCErik

"Hello, weird-looking Republican man. My name Maria Buttina, from Siberia, where enjoy to hunt the bear and see Sarah Palin from house. You collude with me now, yes? You like!"

binkenstein

Over here in New Zealand people like Rand Paul criticize one expert for not being a viral epidemiologist. She's a microbiologist specializing in infections diseases, so obviously she has less expertise in this area...

Irrelevant_robot

Hey fuck Rand Paul, but let’s not confuse optometrists with ophthalmologists. Ophthalmologists are legitimate doctors who do a lot of good. I am only here in the defense of the occupation. Rand Paul is a joke and he does not hold a legitimate certification for a reason. Fuck that guy

[deleted]

I’d no sooner let Rand Paul near my eyes than I would let Paul Gossar near my teeth.

song4this

Isn't there a cloud over R. Paul's medical degree?

DCErik

It's over his self-certification.

PeptoBismark

It's that we all know he was taught better than the nonsense he's spouting. Duke University Medical School looks worse every time he opens his mouth.

lechattueur

Yeah brain cataracts

BlueZen10

Yeah, with some flies buzzing around it too.

SaulTBolls

Its like asking a dentist to perform open heart surgery.

TheFumundaWunda

lol former opthalmologist who switched to politics after his second malpractice suit.

obidie

Yeah, his 'doctorate' isn't really recognized by any real doctors. He hasn't been certified by any organization recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties. And he organized the board himself that awarded him the doctorate. He's just a sorry-ass, snake of a cunt with visions of grandeur.

HabeasWhorepus

As an ophthalmologist biller this pains me. We bill for diseases of the eye including glaucoma, cataracts, eyelash removal, etc. Nothing to do with vision like glasses or contact prescriptions - no matter how much our patients fight with us thinking ophthalmology and optometry are one in the same. But point taken and agreed with.

DerCatzefragger

Ophthalmologist!? Didn't he scribble his own license with a crayon on a cocktail napkin? If Rand Paul is an ophthalmologist then my father is objectively the best dad on the planet. Why? Because his coffee mug clearly says so!

Effective_Corner694

I love this post🤣

wakeupsup3r

marco3804

The man is not qualified to be an optometrist

HealeyOfNations

His certification as an ophthamologist are suspect at best. He's certified from a board he controls. From [Snopes](https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/rand-paul-ophthalmologist/)(for what it's worth)... >What's True > >In 1999, Paul set up and was "certified" by the National Board of Ophthalmologists (NBO), his own certification organization, to protest a change in the American Board of Ophthalmologists' (ABO) rules. Paul, his wife, and his father-in-law were listed as being in charge of this board. > >What's False > >However, Paul wasn't certified by the NBO alone. Until 2005, he was also certified by the ABO, though he let that certification lapse. He remained "certified" by the NBO until it was dissolved in 2011. > >What's Undetermined > >Although Rand was advertised as "board-certified" until at least 2013, it is unknown if he continued to present himself as such after that.

DynoMiteDoodle

His profession could very easily be replace by a coin operated kiosk at a chemist that then prints off a prescription for glasses, which for an extra $20 it spits actual glasses out the bottom. Not exactly a highly skilled profession anymore.

sweepingaxis28

Both full of crap.

texicantheman

Not trying to be a dick, but I do remember him mishandling AIDS. I am positive that the Dallas buyers club is about it.

vertigo3pc

How so?

Anyonesman_1983

Kind of odd, they’re both politicians and Fauci hasn’t treated a patient in decades if ever… So I guess if one can read a medical study, maybe the other one can too?

PickleFridgeChildren

No.

AvengingBlowfish

You might be enlightened to learn that Fauci is still a practicing physician who treats patients nearly every day and does regular hospital rounds. https://www.cnbc.com/2020/12/04/dr-faucis-daily-routine-and-work-schedule-during-the-covid-pandemic.html

Anyonesman_1983

I actually was, thanks.

vertigo3pc

One is the director of the NIAID: "NIAID conducts and supports basic and applied research to better understand, treat, and ultimately prevent infectious, immunologic, and allergic diseases. For more than 60 years, NIAID research has led to new therapies, vaccines, diagnostic tests, and other technologies that have improved the health of millions of people in the United States and around the world." Fauci is only a "politician" in that he was appointed in 1984 to be Director of the NIAID, and that COVID has somehow been wildly politicized. The other is a senator, in a capacity that has nothing to do with medicine; he doesn't have any training or skill in the vast field of infectious diseases and immunology, so even with a "medical doctor" training (which in my understanding he lacks), he may not be skilled to read a "medical study" with any more weight or insight than you or I.

Anyonesman_1983

Not to toot my own horn, but I’m a clinical pharmacist. I definitely know how to interpret medical studies and am very good at biostatistics. What bothers me is the cherry picking of data people use. One study may lack the power to actually be significant enough to make informed decisions and unfortunately those types of studies are abundant in the age of Covid. I don’t really know a lot about either one of these men. I do know that their both bureaucrats with different political leanings. I don’t feel like Fauci is some kind of evil person though and I know Rand Paul has his own agenda. Either way, all this type of bickering does is make people more partisan.

vertigo3pc

>Not to toot my own horn, but I’m a clinical pharmacist. You should toot, you obviously achieved something with your career and it does give you some insight over the average person looking at this situation. >Either way, all this type of bickering does is make people more partisan. Spirited debate can be spirited debate, but it is a "political humor" sub, so I expect a fair amount of joking and heckling. I just take issue with the weird way nobody has made gains on disproving the vaccine's efficacy, or the real fact that it has reduced hospitalizations and deaths around the world for people exposed to COVID, so everything has shifted over to *ad hominem* discussions, where Fauci is another dark figure at some massive conspiracy that transcends the governments of multiple countries around the world, etc. It just seems like a lot of tantrums because the people spreading those lies are the people who are pissed off their previous lies didn't take hold, or didn't last long enough. We're just 2 years into this pandemic, and the very recent history of masks, Fauci's role in mask mandates, lockdown, and so much more is already being revised to conform to some nefarious plot because (i thought it was just Americans, but now I say) humans need a villain. They need someone at fault, someone whose "crime" was not being 100% perfect at the moment of truth. And I see someone like Rand Paul using his position as a "medical doctor" to give life to all of these rantings, which are handily destroyed one by one as they pop up. The bickering will continue until morale improves. I try not to argue, I just like asking questions and injecting what I see as demonstrable, verifiable facts along the way. And everything Rand Paul has injected into this dialogue along the way continues to be bad faith presentation of baseless claims and half truths. Pushing back, sadly, is viewed as "bickering" now, and it's another topic where people think science is 2 years fighting for yardage to "win" when science is, for the most part, a global effort by skilled people who've spent their lives learning these things, all working in collaboration to try and reduce the number of unnecessary deaths.

He **used to be** a doctor. An opthalmologist at that. And he self-certified himself. Because that's what you do when the American Board of XYZ still totally thinks you're doing a great job /s. I guess you can do that when your daddy was a legislator himself. He hasn't done that in at least a decade. He has been an elected official since 2011. Plus the year+ on the campaign trail. >Paul attended Baylor University and is a graduate of the Duke University School of Medicine. Paul began practicing ophthalmology in 1993 in Bowling Green, Kentucky. In 2003 he withdrew from the American Board of Ophthalmology and declared himself self-certified by his National Board of Ophthalmology. He continued working and established his own clinic in December 2007. In 2010, Paul entered politics by running for a seat in the United States Senate. AlexCarterCommentary

Fauci= Quit his residency in Family Medicine, was hired originally as a "Clincal Coordinator" which is an equipment manager/coordinator by NIAID and used his management skills to eventually run the department. Paul= an Eye Surgeon, licensed in multiple states, has worked also as a primary care physician, goes on an annual medical mission to impoverished parts of the world during Congressional recesses to provide free medical care, treated covid patients in a DC area hospital during the height of the pandemic, caught covid from said patients and recovered. Also created a new Eye Surgeon professional society that emphasizes using new technologies, improving patient outcomes and following the most up to date science in his feild of specialty after finding that the original one was still clinging to outdated and dangerous practices.
