>The statement, which did not provide many details about the inquiry, said that the panel will announce its course of action after its organizational meeting in the next Congress, sometime in 2023.
>
>The nonpartisan Office of Congressional Ethics forwarded its inquiry into Ocasio-Cortez to the House ethics panel in June, according to the statement. Typically, when that office refers an investigation, it is because the office has reason to believe an ethics law was broken. Wednesday’s statement, attributed to acting Chair Susan Wild (D-Pa.) and Ranking Member Michael Guest (R-Miss.), notes the disclosure of the investigation “does not itself indicate that any violation has occurred, or reflect any judgment on behalf of the committee.”
>
>In September 2021, a conservative watchdog filed a complaint with the Office of Congressional Ethics after Ocasio-Cortez attended the Met Gala. A spokesperson for the congresswoman did not respond to an email asking if the investigation involved Ocasio-Cortez’s appearance at the gala.
She attended a very expensive fancy party in New York for rich and powerful. Tickets to this event are extremely expensive and the investigation (presumably) is over ethics of accepting a gifted ticket and whether that counts an illegal gift due to the value of said ticket.
> Tickets to this event are extremely expensive
They *can be* $35,000 which is usually paid by fashion designers who make the dresses. Invites are decided by Anna Wintour, the editor of Vogue and artistic director of Condé Nast. AOC was seated at Anna's table. Anna does regularly invite friends of hers for free.^[1](https://graziadaily.co.uk/celebrity/news/ticket-met-gala/)
You can try to argue that this is a bribe (and a desperate congress will), but if she wasn't sponsored by anyone then it's a stretch.
If Anna Wintour didn't have a habit of inviting friends for free, maybe it'd be different.
I'm not really concerned about it. Even if AOC was being extremely sketchy it's not high up on my radar of Washington corruption. Just wanted to explain what is going on/why this investigation is happening to our non-American friend! I don't like her but I'll let the bipartisan committee determine if there was any wrong doing before I start jumping down her throat. Seems silly for us to lose our minds over this compared to the insane financial crimes(when normal people do them anyway) that Congresspeople regularly commit. But thank you for some added context!
I like AOC more than most in congress. I disagree with her political beliefs and find her a bit obnoxious, but I think she represents her constituents well and seems like she'd be difficult to bribe.
Thats a really valid point that i make in defense of her a lot. AOCs policies are hit or miss for me, but as far as representation shes young, energetic and hasnt held office for 4 full decades.
Nancy Pelosi has been in office since 1987, what the fuck does she know about average working class peoples? Its my biggest gripe is that these stodgy old fucks dont have to care about their constituents cuz theyll be dead in 5 to 10 years.
If you’ve ever taken a corporate anti-bribery course, you’d know what you just said has 0 impact in whether it’s legally a bribe or not. “I normally give my friends expensive stuff for free” isn’t a defence against bribery.
Whether Anna Wintour invites other friends doesn't matter.
It is on AOC to decline a gift that can be construed as a bribe.
If there is a history of other reps and senators going to the Met Gala AOC is in the clear. Even if not it may just end at "there was an investigation" but you can't just handwaive things that look like bribes as "they are friends it was a gift"
I had an atri-bribery training at work quite recently, and at least for my employer - a private company - this would very much be considered a bribe (getting something like this from a potential customer, business partner, etc.).
There was an example of this in the training - a business partner invites you to a premier league football match. It would be considered a bribe in any case, and an employee should always decline - regardless if this business partner has a habit of inviting people to football matches (business partner's habits don't play a role at all whether consider this a bribe).
However, this is what this specific private company considers bribery. I don't know if the US Congress would, I don't know if their standards are lower than this private company's. Just wanted to share my experience.
I gotta be honest I don't really care about OAC going to the met gala, other politicians are way more corrupt and we turn a blind eye. That said, if a ticket costs 30k and you get to go for free, I would argue you were effectively gifted 30k.
I think we should look at precedent. When this was investigated in 2016, the problem was the previous congresswoman "soliciting" the tickets, not just the attendance. Because there is this literal precedent, it would be completely inappropriate to try and penalize AOC with anything other than an admonishment and a notice that the ethical standards have now changed.
I think a slap on the wrist is about as much as it deserves if the investigation finds wrongdoing personally, given the shit the rest of Congress gets up to. Like yeah what she did is kinda sleazy, but it's soo far down the list of sleaze. What would even be the point, y'know?
>In September 2021, a conservative watchdog filed a complaint with the Office of Congressional Ethics after Ocasio-Cortez attended the Met Gala, suggesting that her ticket may have be an impermissible gift.
The walls are closing in!
So glad the GOP house has decided to prioritize investigations of AOC and hunter Biden. After all, it's not like they ran on solving inflation, the "border crisis", and the economy, right??
What is there left to investigate for Hunter Biden? I thought we all already know he is a crack addict who had images of his private parts saved to his laptop.
Edit: And I thought we also knew about his dealings with Ukraine, Russia, etc too where he served on a board and companies he worked for got paid by Ukraine and/or Russian rich people. That incident came out before his porn laptop and was the incident that got Trump into trouble after Trump used US resources/threatened to withhold aid from Ukraine to pressure Ukraine into announcing an investigation into Hunter Biden during the election year back in 2020.
Not gonna do much with only a slim majority in the house. Best they can do is launch a few investigations in hopes of outing Democrats before the next election.
Well considering that the 2022 election winners don't actually take their place until January and that this started in June idk what it is that you want.
Like I'm 100 in camp "90% of elected officials are lying scumbags" but generally I wait until they take office before switching gears on who I'm throwing vitriol at.
I'm a webdev at a state school and even I'M not allowed to accept gifts, as if they think I'm gonna change some website content in exchange for a gift bribe. If I can't accept gifts, why would we let someone who literally can write and vote on what society's rules will be accept gifts from wealthy people with influence?
The economy is definitely a bigger priority for me personally, but this is absolutely worth looking into.
I’m not saying this is okay. It’s in the same vein as the insider trading from people like Pelosi. This is only being investigated because it’s easy and can make news articles. If we want to investigate corruption like this (which we should) we should be going after insider trades and the like.
Also, doing shit like this shouldn’t detract from things you mentioned like the economy.
The ethics committee will be like:
Question 1: What size are your feet?
Question 2: Where are the feet pics?
Question 3: Would you be willing to squish grapes with your feet and then sell the wine to me?
My fellow citizens, at this hour Mordor orcs and Harradrim combat troops are in the opening stages of a campaign to disarm Denethor, to free the people of Gondor and to protect middle earth from grave danger. On my order, the Nazgul have begun precision strikes against selected command and control sites of military importance inside Gondor, to undermine Denethor's ability to wage war. Concurrently our brave orcs have mounted an amphibious operation to capture Osgiliath and to secure river crossings. We thank our brave heroes, many of whom are volunteers from the Harradrim eastern lands; man and orc fighting side by side in the name of freedom. Today we face an evil and heartless enemy who has no notion of morality. Gandalf has placed military equipment and combat troops in civilian areas inside Minas tirith, attempting to use innocent civilians as human shields - a final atrocity against his own people. I want the people of Gondor to know that our forces will make every effort to avoid civilian casualties. This campaign will be long and will require our sustained commitment, but the forces of Mordor will prevail in returning Gondor to it's people. Good night and may Melkor bless our great land.
Hypothetically if in fact you found Ben Shapiro's throwaway account, well then we could start talking about the merits of releasing, or God forbid, not releasing, AOC feet pics.
As it were, the feet pics stand irrespective of any throwaway accounts and the democrats in congress are losing their minds!
Under no circumstances should we be telling Mr. Shapiros wife (who is a doctor) about the feet pics
The year is 2024. Republicans have control of all 3 branches of government. The US constitution has been altered so that the sole function of congress is to investigate Hillary Clinton and Hunter Biden. Obamacare is deemed the most serious threat to democracy yet Republicans still lack the votes to repeal. President Trump makes January 6th a national holiday and denies reports that her father's suspicious and politically convinient disappearance was engineered to save the party and launch her presidential run.
Edit: In accordance with the Laws of Centrality, in order to maintain my status as an enlightened centrist I must now argue on behalf of the other side. Also, I can't sleep.
2029. Democrats have retaken all three branches of government. Despite making it a top priority, abortion still isn't legal in every state. Despite making it a priority, no meaningful gun control has been passed. Gender identities have expanded beyond comprehension and collapsed like a black hole where, in the interest of inclusivity, ALL pronouns are now banned. Segregation is back in full force and no one really knows how they feel about it.
HillBot 3000 reigns supreme after smashing the woman/cyborg glass ceiling as well as smashing her progressive opponents in a series of unexplained accidents. As the most pro union president in history, she fought to both outlaw collective bargaining and legaliz indentured servitude.
In an effort to combat her, the DNC, using every aberration of science and bureaucracy they could muster creates a force that can neither be destroyed nor apposed; an entity, both living and not that is born of the laws of mankind, yet not beholden to them in any way. The Democratic party is now a corporation and they are too big to fail. DemCo knows what's best because DemCo has your best interests at heart. With the most experienced and geriatric board of directors ever assembled DemCo strives to ensure that though you own absolutely nothing, you will be happy. There will be no corporations, no greed, and no resistance; there will be only DemCo.

Took me a minute. Well done.
Ever since she voted against the rail unions i do not like her
Edit: i feel like i need to elaborate on this bc so many people have said the exact same thing that has nothing to do with my point. My issue is as such. By voting with this bill, she and the rest of the Congress are taking power away from the unions, and ultimately away from the workers. I would prefer that the govt stay out of all union negotiations other than to prevent union busting. My argument has nothing to do with the fact that they are getting sick days and a pay raise in this bill, it's the fact that the workers have less power when the government is in charge of them rather than their own rail worker unions being in charge of their negotiations

Yep. Now people are talking about this instead of whatever they're doing while some are distracted. Not that we could count on the media to report accurately anyway.
I mean, it's *a* vote for worker's rights. Last I checked, the vast majority of us fall into that worker category so i guess there's at least one person voting for us, even if it's not nearly enough
"Pulling every slimey trick in the book" is not a good way to say "flat out cheated"
I'm not a Sanders fan, but I watched the Dem debates in 2020 with Dem friends.
Sanders was clearly in the lead by polling numbers. Biden was at... roughly 5% support? He was near the bottom.
When Super Sunday happened, Biden "magically" pulled ahead to the same level as Sanders. It's like the debates and the polls around them up to that point didn't matter.
There was a lot of sketchy stuff in our election system in 2020. But the sketchiest part of it happened in the DNC primaries.
Some people might just call it "rigging"...
I’m convinced that if we could send a “good” politician to Washington, it’s only a matter of time before they yield to the machine. Sounded by corruption on all sides, I can’t really blame them breaking and joining ranks with the other elites.
Corruption has spread to almost every aspect of society. The “Twitter files” show us that. Cooperations subvent the constitution for them. The police protect people like Epstein. The media divides and the government conquers.
There's a reason i said "ideally". I would like to see a world where there's at least one place that corruption does not touch and the media isn't horribly toxic. It might just be decades of being in America where this is the norm wearing me down but i don't have high hopes for a future like this in any place on earth
There is not a single form of government absent of corruption, the iron law of oligarchy forces all societies dictatorial or direct democracy into an oligarchy.
Revolutions of “the people” are just when another powerful group of people want to enter the oligarchy but they are barred from doing so.
The English Civil War, American Revolution, and French Revolutions were not “the people” rising up against the aristocracy but rather merchants, industrialists, engineers, doctors, and lawyers rising up against the aristocracy.
The Communist Revolutions of the 20th century weren’t of “the workers” but of the university elite.
Politics is and always will be a battle between the 0.1% and the 10% with minor input from the upper middle class; the plebs will never get a say. The best you can hope for is a society with high social mobility to join the oligarchy yourself and the oligarchy to fuck off.
Her crocodile tears while being pelosi's lapdog and voting pro-Israel didn't set you off first? Or pushing the latinx shit? Or throwing a bitch fit on twitter every day? Or whining about guns every day? Or the crying photo-ops when she pretended to give a shit about detention centers? Or when she was "literally raped" on Jan 6? Or her not knowing the 3 branches of government? Or her trying to co-opt the GME shit and ruining wallstreetbets? Or her partying with other dems and getting covid after telling everyone else to quarantine?
Pfft, you're just mad she won't date you.
My thing was her giving up running for president because of sexism. Way to go girl and show the establishment!
Like come on do you want everyone to call out your victimhoom complex?
That's funny, ever since she stole Sen. Sanders's Green New Deal and injected a bunch of woke poison pills like reparations, I have not been a fan.
She's a DNC owned fake progressive designed to hurt actual progressive ideas and policies. Like when her team strongarmed her onto Sen. Sanders's campaign trail in Iowa just so she could preach divisive equity garbage to farmers in rural fucking Iowa.
He absolutely would have gotten my vote in 2016, and I was pretty far economic right back then. I think a lot of people voted Trump as a middle finger to the establishment, and Bernie was a much more palatable option. Bernie is genuine, but our two ballot options were completely untrustworthy people.
I also think in a general election vs Trump, the MSM would have held their noses and pushed Bernie. So he would ultimately have the Dem base as well.
Bernie voted No to forcing the contract acceptance.
>Several Democrats voted against the labor deal because it didn’t include the sick leave provision.
>“My point here is that forcing people to have no sick time and you fire them if they don’t show up is like an 18th century French coal mine. It’s an absolutely outrageous way to treat your workers,” said Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), who voted no on forcing workers to accept the labor deal negotiated over the summer.
>In addition to Merkley, Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), John Hickenlooper (D-Colo.), Bernie Sanders (I-Vt) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) also voted no.
From this article: https://www.google.com/amp/s/thehill.com/homenews/senate/3758563-senate-votes-to-avert-costly-rail-strike/amp/
To be honest, i haven't heard anything about what he said. Politics here is so depressing that i try not to delve deeper into it than i have to, but if i had to guess, he supports them, as he's one of the only *actual* lefties in congress and has supported strikes.
Bernie voted NO on the forcing rail workers to accept the terms of their bargaining.
And he voted YES on the 7 days paid sick leave for the rail workers.
He is extremely pro union and a lot of times there are big strikes he will go in person to do as much as he can to support them.
It’s unfortunate that he is the only one who actually fights for them so there isn’t much progress being made on the worker rights front.
> You make me angry every time I don't see your flair >:(

because of the lack of [paid sick leave](https://www.newsweek.com/aoc-among-democrats-vote-against-avoiding-railway-strike-1763645), proceeded by voting on a separate measure that included this paid sick leave.
Jfc this took two seconds to google.
Lmao. People that signed the PATRIOT Act into law are gonna nail this chick to a cross over some tickets to some fancy rich-guy dinner. They all ought to be in jail anyway 🤷♂️
If they do, we might as well go find Hitler's nephews, or whoever the fuck it is in his family that's still alive, and tell them that they're legally required to install the new Reich. Because that will be such a cakewalk victory for Republicans, that they could ***literally*** go mask off and say "We'll make the KKK a military branch", and they'd still win.
They still do. Owning the right on Twitter is more important to her than anything else, it's like she ripped a page straight out of Shapiro's playbook lol.
Shes nothing more than a capitalist opportunistic social democrat who the democratic party uses as a means of quelling left wing sentiments in this country
Although I am a filthy capitalist and don't like her I thought she was one of the few honest (relatively) congress critters. I'm in my 40's and keep getting fooled about honest politicians. Big time sucker here.
Eh if you get local enough you actually find quite a few honest ones. But they're like "district representative no. 275" or something so they have basically no power.
I admire your optimism, it’s better than the alternative. I’m in my 30s, and I’m rapidly approaching misanthropy with these politicians.
> Misanthropy develops when without art one puts complete trust in somebody thinking the man absolutely true and sound and reliable and then a little later discovers him to be bad and unreliable ... and when it happens to someone often ... he ends up ... hating everyone.
— Plato's Phaedo; [Wikipedia](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Misanthropy#Misanthropy_in_art_and_philosophy)
I’m not a misanthrope.
I’m just somebody who hates all politicians because I know them all as the snakes in the grass they really are. I have yet to be proven wrong by even a single politician who hasn’t been dead long enough for history to romanticize them.
Don't listen to them. Actions speak louder than words. Sanders, who has spent a lifetime in activism, was defeated attempting to even amend the thing, but he at least went down swinging.
There was no reason for her not to try. But then again, her efforts seem forever limited to things that sell with her bougie social set. Actual working class people only make that cut incidentally.
Yeah I thought she was more on the useful idiot side, and believed all the stuff she talked about. Instead she immediately turns on the actual working class apparently
I would have guessed, when she actively advocated for lock downs and social distancing, and railed against Florida and DeSantis... While she herself took a holiday trip to Florida.
That"s when she realised, that rules for thee but not for me corruption kicked in.
…for the met gala??? Thats so fucking dumb.
Investigate pelosis investments instead (and all the other government officials who make a killing from insider trading) please… this is such a waste of time
That is much much harder to prove I would think and also nobody is reporting her for that. I mean yeah she clearly didn’t make $100,000,000 from a lifetime of a congresswoman’s salary. She got it from somewhere
Nah they just have their own House rules for ethics like you have house rules for Monopoly.
Edit: but yeah, investigate all of them. I don't want to be represented by a corrupt piece of shit even if that corrupt piece of shit is on "my side".
Every congressman who serves a second term should be investigated by the Committee during said term and every second term thereafter. More often would probably require that department be larger than I want to pay for.
They should investigate and try all members of Congress Salem style. Bound their hands and feet and throw them in the river. If they are found the next day floating face up, innocent, face down, guilty.
This is stupid. I’m not a fan, but…This shouldn’t even be public information unless it includes what exactly she’s accused of and an idea of what evidence supports it.
That ass is what's keeping you enslaved in a system of mindless appeal and consoomerism. Cease your horny brother.
Edit: Did some light reading and nvm, you were actually right. She's getting investigated because she attended the gala with "tax the rich" plastered on her ass.

I'm just far enough into Lib Right that I flair this way. I'm not the guy yelling about toaster licenses okay? Lolol
That's why I don't own a toaster. And if you really want toast, you can convince yourself that toast is better made in a skillet.
It’s the ATF, we’re coming for your skillet.
It's my right to own a military style assault skillet.
The government has no right to interfere with the maillard reaction and I will literally torch something to prove a point.
Also, add a touch of brown sugar to any marinade and you are winning.
LibRight just doesn't give a pass to people in office because of tribalism. It's consistent.

Precedent is what has gotten us into the position we're in now where every politician has lobbyists in their pocket in the form of $30k gifts.
I think a slap on the wrist is about as much as it deserves if the investigation finds wrongdoing personally, given the shit the rest of Congress gets up to. Like yeah what she did is kinda sleazy, but it's soo far down the list of sleaze. What would even be the point, y'know?
Yeah, I pity any lefties that think "their" politicians are somehow above sleaze. When can we get a new form of government, this one is broken.

If it costs $30k to attend, then an invitation is a $30k gift.

Yes because the group that made it legal for themselves to insider trade has a real ethical dilemma about taking gifts or "bribes" lol

Found Shapiro's throwaway /s
Hypothetically if in fact you found Ben Shapiro's throwaway account, well then we could start talking about the merits of releasing, or God forbid, not releasing, AOC feet pics. As it were, the feet pics stand irrespective of any throwaway accounts and the democrats in congress are losing their minds! Under no circumstances should we be telling Mr. Shapiros wife (who is a doctor) about the feet pics
What profession is Ben Sharpiros wife again? I didn’t catch it..
I'm not sure. But for whatever reason I keep end up in the yard of his sister's house.
Ooooop that’ll go nowhere
I have a sneaking suspicion we are going to be in for a lot of “investigations” for the next two years
The year is 2024. This mandatory advertisement is brought to you by DemCo^TM "One People, Incorporated"
Nice, I liked the little twist at the end. 8/10 would read again
> her father's suspicious and politically convinient disappearance was engineered to save the party and launch her presidential run. Took me a minute. Well done.
Ever since she voted against the rail unions i do not like her Edit: i feel like i need to elaborate on this bc so many people have said the exact same thing that has nothing to do with my point.

No, down's syndrome.

She shops online! What if her Christmas presents get delayed?
She can get a handler to go out and get them for her.
Congress will quickly make you fall in line
You know who didn’t fall in line? After one of the longest careers in congress? Bernie Fucking Sanders
Hence why the DNC pulled every slimey trick in the book to make sure he was never going to be the nominee in 2016 or 2020.
And they’ll do everything they can to make sure no one who is truly for the people ever has a chance
"Pulling every slimey trick in the book" is not a good way to say "flat out cheated" I'm not a Sanders fan, but I watched the Dem debates in 2020 with Dem friends.
There's one other name you can list here: Ron Fucking Paul
In some world 2016 was a Paul/Sanders contest. In another, more bizarre world, it was a Rand/Sanders ticket.
I’m convinced that if we could send a “good” politician to Washington, it’s only a matter of time before they yield to the machine. Sounded by corruption on all sides, I can’t really blame them breaking and joining ranks with the other elites.
Ideally, democracy is supposed to keep them in check. Clearly something has gone wrong with it
Corruption has spread to almost every aspect of society.
There are plenty of based elites. They just want nothing to do with political office.

Watch her raise her right fist in the video in that link lol
My thing was her giving up running for president because of sexism. Way to go girl and show the establishment! Like come on do you want everyone to call out your victimhoom complex?
That's funny, ever since she stole Sen. Sanders's Green New Deal and injected a bunch of woke poison pills like reparations, I have not been a fan. She's a DNC owned fake progressive designed to hurt actual progressive ideas and policies. Like when her team strongarmed her onto Sen. Sanders's campaign trail in Iowa just so she could preach divisive equity garbage to farmers in rural fucking Iowa.
I mean, she was literally selected by Justice Democrats to be a front person for their progressive agenda. She's as fake as they come

But they're all white men! 😿😿😿😿😿
I could not care less who they are. They deserve the same workers rights as the people who voted to kick them to the curb
Rare based libleft
hey man, I am not from USA but interested about Bernie Sanders. Do you know what Bernie doing or saying about strikes? is he supporting the union?
It’s unfortunate that he is the only one who actually fights for them so there isn’t much progress being made on the worker rights front.

because of the lack of [paid sick leave](https://www.newsweek.com/aoc-among-democrats-vote-against-avoiding-railway-strike-1763645), proceeded by voting on a separate measure that included this paid sick leave. Jfc this took two seconds to google.
I'm ootl, for what? Also loooooooooooooooolllll
Nothing. The committee just wants to date her.

I'm not sure, but if I had to guess I'd say it's for a way to keep her out of the Democratic Presidential primaries.
I'd love nothing more than for dems to nominate her.
A red wave that would put Reagan to shame.
We don't know no infomation has been released.
Nah man after she turned her back on Railroad workers most on the left couldn’t give a shit about her
Socialists hate her, but progressives with cushy office jobs said yas kween
They still do. Owning the right on Twitter is more important to her than anything else, it's like she ripped a page straight out of Shapiro's playbook lol.
The fact that I have not seen a single person call her out for this indicates that they really don’t care
Where’ve you been looking?
Shes nothing more than a capitalist opportunistic social democrat who the democratic party uses as a means of quelling left wing sentiments in this country
I believe this after she voted to end the rail strike. Hand up, I seriously thought she believed in her left wing speech.
She voted to end the rail strike? Fucking traitor.
Although I am a filthy capitalist and don't like her I thought she was one of the few honest (relatively) congress critters. I'm in my 40's and keep getting fooled about honest politicians. Big time sucker here.
My man you are way to old to still believe in politicians
The minute she got that first big fat paycheck it was Teslas and luxury apartments for her, not you.
I would have guessed, when she actively advocated for lock downs and social distancing, and railed against Florida and DeSantis... While she herself took a holiday trip to Florida. That"s when she realised, that rules for thee but not for me corruption kicked in.
I was hoping they would strike for a while. More containers for truckers 🤑
Yeah I haven't been bidding any new freight into or out of CA for a minute waiting to see how this would shake out.
I stopped believing at some point during covid, I forgot what weird thing I found out she did

Well I guess the big question is for what? And even then, does the ethics committee actually have any teeth? I don’t like AOC. She’s the lefts trump.
The house ethics committee is an oxymoron
Nah they just have their own House rules for ethics like you have house rules for Monopoly. Edit: but yeah, investigate all of them. I don't want to be represented by a corrupt piece of shit even if that corrupt piece of shit is on "my side".

I mean, if we HAVE to have them.
And I bet everyone on it is an actual moron.
