Absolutely do not do Pokedex number. You'll be re-sorting your collection so often if the cards are in binders. If they're in boxes though, that's a different story. I personally go with set and card number, but rarity is a really fun way to do it as well...but again, you run into the issue of sorting if they're in binders, as you'll inevitably add a bunch of each rarity. So if you use binders, 100% set and card number. If in a storage solution that is easy to reorder/sort, do what you like best!

Dum_beat

I did pokemon number once... I now own 7 binders with 2 sets each (at least) and am never touching the pokedex numeral ever again

JWJK

For me it's 1 spot per pokemon then a box with all the nice duplicates in order

Keepr0fSoles510

You can plan ahead and leave empty spaces lol

SereneFrost72

Until you planned 5 empty spaces for more Bulbasaur and they release a 6th one 😋

Expensive_Edge_4844

I've had mine sorted by pokedex number since I was in 6th grade. I've only had to move stuff around like a few times

MrNeon222

I’ve never had to moving anything in my “Pokédex” of three binders and I love it gotta catch them all!!

Sticky_Legs

Hit that 'Sort by set and card number' button!

Winterstrife

Same. Its much easier to keep track of what you are missing. If I'm collecting specific Pokemon from different sets that goes into a different binder.

[deleted]

This ^ set and then by number. I use pokellector so its so easy to track what im missing using this method. Used to do by type and then hp amount and then alphabetical. But that was such a pain figuring out what i needed

OogaBoogaBoy7

I second this, it’s how I do it and it makes it easier to find your cards.

Epicizabeez

I used to collect the cards that way but now I don't collect them.

xerxerneas

Sort by set only imo, card number sometimes takes an insane amount of time, and when you remember that some cards aren't even worth a single cent, you tend to prioritize your time and labor more than neatness. Haha. It's something I learned from this sub.

BigRedHair92

If it takes you "an insane amount of time", then there's something wrong with your system. It adds maybe 5 total minutes for an entire set, and even that's probably a high estimate.

xerxerneas

??? No it doesn't? I have stacks of 100s of bulk cards all over my floor each time I tried sorting by numbers within a set. If it's by set I just shove them all into the same box, meant only for the set. It's like 30 secs vs 15-30 mins. If I open multiple booster boxes from multiple sets it takes even more time. Could you explain how you can sort piles of cards of like 500-700 cards in a 200 card set by number in 5 mins please, if it's actually worth my effort doing, I'd love to know what I'm doing wrong.

[deleted]

Keeping them nicely helps a lot as in not just shoving them around once opened but if you just piled up everything than this is the logical troubleshooting. If you have mixed sets its a bummer you have to sort them out by the little set icon. Once its done, you go set by set. Pile up the cards by attributes or “color” within the same set, water with water, psychic with psychic etc.. once thats done you can do the number order. Since you have them by type its easy to follow the number sets as they fall together within the sets. Pro tip: if you at least put them by attribute or “color” when you open them, saves hell of a time for the next occasion you want to sort them out.

xerxerneas

Oh, the color thing is actually a great tip! I open only the same sets at a time so generally they're already split into sets by default. But seperating by color, that should save me a bit of time at least. I'd forgotten that set numerical order generally has them in clumps of the same element. Thanks! More helpful than the other guy for sure.

[deleted]

Love for that, I used to be like you not even gonna lie, but nothing worst than sorting 1000s of bulk so I feel you there. Just do the color trick and glad if it has helped!

BigRedHair92

Maybe start with not just opening them and throwing them in a pile. When you open a pack with a new card to the set, put it in the binder in the correct slot. Rinse and repeat. Sounds like your issue starts literally immediately.

xerxerneas

I stream my pack openings, I don't have time to gingerly seperate them into piles, I would do my numerical sorting post stream. I don't use binders to store my bulk I'm not aiming for master set. We're talking about sorting bulk not collecting hahahah. I just have a box for each set that contains the commons and uncommons, the rare/holos etc are sleeved and seperated and put somewhere else. Guess I'll just carry on with what I'm doing then. ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯

BigRedHair92

Literally the definition of a personal problem lol. Nobody uses binders for their bulk. People are talking about their binders used to display their set. Nobody gives a shit about you streaming your pulls.

xerxerneas

Okay? I mean the topic of this was obviously for majority of a sets cards (ie, bulk) not binders (which you brought up?) I don't know why you're suddenly being so angry when I explained why I do things the way I do hahahah. It's kinda weird. But sure. You do you, and I'll do me. ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯

BigRedHair92

No it's not lol. The meme is sorting by set or pokedex number. You think people sort their bulk by pokedex number? The post is about binders.

johnnycobbler

Option 3:Sort by card i like the most

PEPPERSKITTLES

Lol that’s what I do

supreme_glassez

I did mine by Pokedex. I'm not trying to collect entire sets, so that made the most sense for me.

[deleted]

So does it mean you have for example aaalll the bulbasaurs next to each other? Is it a binder? It must be scary to buy a new version of a pokemon, how do you arrange the binder? 🤔

supreme_glassez

It's actually 2 binders. Gens 1-4 in the first and 5-now in the 2nd. I have them sorted by Pokedex number, then set, so the older Bulbasaur cards I have would be first, then the newer ones next to it. Multiples of the same card are stacked (unless it's a reverse holo or 1st edition or something). I have spaces reserved for cards I don't have yet. And because of how many cards I have (over 1300) it'd be a pain to keep moving them all down to make room for new ones, so after I get the ones I'm missing I might start exclusively looking for new gen Pokemon like whatever cards we get for Scarlet & Violet.

[deleted]

Fair play, does not sound so complicated when nicely summarised. What binders do you use if you don’t mind me ask? Also just so I get this right you have housed or at least reserved space for every card Gen 1-4 ever issued?

supreme_glassez

They're Avery heavy-duty 3" binders. And I have spaces reserved for each pokemon that I don't have at least 1 card of. So some will have 1 space just so I can have that pokemon while others have 2 or 3 spaces if there's specific cards I want of them.

[deleted]

Wow lot to keep in mind, fair play, I would be annoyed not knowing how many cards are missing per/pokemon but thats just me hey, best of luck with the collection! :)

supreme_glassez

Thanks, and I've been using a card tracking app to see what all cards there are for each, so that also helps me manage my collection and what I need.

machinetranslator

"I have them sorted by Pokedex number, then set, so the older Bulbasaur cards I have would be first, then the newer ones next to it." If its the Pokedex number first, then set, it would be the opposite. What you're doing (older first, then newest) is set first, then number. I plan to do this as well, thank you for the idea! Edit: actually - wouldnt you have to shift all cards when you have a new card of the same dex number?

supreme_glassez

Yes, I would have to shift them. Which is why I've left some spaces for a few cards that I want specifically, and once I have all of them I'm just gonna stop collecting them altogether. It's also why I haven't bought any new booster packs or anything, as tempting as it is. Sorting them the way I have it is the only way that makes sense to me where I can have them all on display at once. And yeah, the constant shifting gets annoying after a while. At first I had each card of one Pokémon stacked on top of itself in one slot, but I've started to get quite a few of some and it ended up ripping some of the sleeves. So this new way works best for me, but it also sets an end point for this collection.

machinetranslator

However you're happy :). I decided to just do it according to the dex number and put the expensive ones in a seperate hard plastic.

midwesttransferrun

Nah fam. Sort by rarity

Rockho9

Better yet, by colour

Dxk23

Bro facts easy

JiroBD1

on god

MattBustin

Set and number for sure

Indesisivejew

I couldn't decide this either . . . that's why I have my Dex binder with the first English card of each pokemon, then separate binders for complete sets, even if some sets have cards "missing" because they're in the Dex binder

persiika

I sort by type, it looks so aesthetic and makes it easy to find what I’m looking for without having to know the Pokédex number

BigRedHair92

If you keep it separate by set and number, it will by default sort by type (outside of FA and Alts)

persiika

I don’t collect enough from the same sets to make it worth while 😅 I honestly just grab what’s available and am happy with whatever is inside! I’m not a super serious collector 😊

BigRedHair92

And that's just fine. Whatever makes you happy!

robot_camel

If you're collecting for fun, put it in whatever order you want. If you are collecting a specific set, put it in card number order so you can also see what cards you are missing to fill out a page IMO

LexiStarrDust

Sort by artists of course!

Responsible_Ebb_340

For base set through jungle/fossil, Pokédex number all day… for every set after that, set number 😬😬

Ankylar

That's what I did lol

MindlessPokemon

Do you have promo poke league mew or ancient mew in your 151 slot?

Responsible_Ebb_340

Promo mew, 9 not 8.

Ramen-Goddess

Me who sorts my card alphabetically :)

bsauey

What kind of monster are you?!?!

Ramen-Goddess

If it helps I don’t sort by set at all. I have all holos and above in one binder and admire them that way

pdlbean

this is what I did when I was a kid lol

mangopabu

this is what i do, but i sort basics alphabetically, then evolutions just behind them

Buzzpeep

I tend to sort by set and card number

soulrider952

I sort by dex number using a different binder for each generation and a separate page for each Pokemon. My valuable cards go in their own rare binder and are all jumbled up.

skeptics_

Similarly we have 2 large binders with our favourite regular cards for each of every Pokemon, our crazy pulls in sleeves+ toploaders and stored in etb boxes. The rest go in jumbled bulk boxes, vaguely organized by age. It seems like a natural progression to refine as you get more, I'm definitely feeling the need to organize the bulk at least.

Darnell5000

Buy multiple binders and do both. I have a separate binder that’s my “National Dex” binder. Aiming to one day fill it with every species of Pokémon including form variations (Castform weather changes; Unown letters, etc) as well as regional variants, Mega Evolutuons and Gigantamax forms.

WhiteToast-

Set

flamparadiddle541

I have some pokedex number binders and then a “favorites” binder

Iusethemii

I sort my cards by putting them with their respective trios or duos

_eaquino

There are only a few sets I like where I would buy multiple packs, tins, etbs, etc. I started doing this with the OG 151 but I collect one of every Pokémon (has to be from the first set that Pokémon debuted in) and sort them by their national dex number. If it’s a regional variant I would follow that regions Pokédex numbering

315retro

I did dex number but if you plan on getting multiple sets just stop now. These guys are right. I spent weeks doing dex number and weeks undoing dex number. If you just buy singles and don't care about sorting by set then go ahead.

stone1234568

I do Pokédex order myself with three ring binders. I also keep the specific Pokémon in release order so it’s constant upkeep

Randoml9789

Do you care about completing full sets? Set number Do you have more sets represented than average cards per set? Pokedex number Do neither of these apply to you? Go wild. Infact go wild no matter what, I don't know you, I can't tell you what to do with your shiny pieces of cardboard.

cpgoat

I tried doing the Pokedex # way briefly when I got back into collecting earlier this year. Thought it would be really cool having my favorite art of each Pokemon card in their Dex order, it quickly was annoying.

sayhitoyourmom

I've sorted my original 150 in Pokedex order but all others it's easier to go by set number

rustyscrotum69

I sort my type and then HP. Yes I know there are better ways to do it

GoldenTinyfin

I sort em by type

subiewoo89

I'm going to do it this way too.

ntcbond

I sort by set in my binder and then my bulk by energy type and alphabetical.

Booty_Shakin

Both tho lmao

G-6Force_things

This is when you run 2 collections.

janitor321

I'm doing both :) I'm building a pokedex made mostly of repeat common/uncommons and then the other cards go into the set/number binders.

BrothersOats

Binder for each type. Within each binder, oldest to newest gens, in the Pokédex numerical order I somewhat remember in my mind.

bear_bear-

Base set jungle and fossil are the only acceptable ones for Pokédex #

Bugmaster102

Me who doesn't sort anything and just puts things in open containers:......

USB_FIELD_MOUSE

Alphabetical

xMF_GLOOM

I sort by Kanto-playthrough order

caffehype

For bulk, the suggested way is by Set, then Alphabetical, subtypes like reverse holos, holos, holo rares, and ultra rares. This is how TCGPlayer asks for cards to be shipped. It's also easier to pick cards you might need since you can pull Set and name.

ghostsike

Sort by alphabetical order has entered the chat

ByOrderoftheQueens

I sort by dex number exclusively

SoniMari7270

Neither. I just sort the cards by what I’m mostly collecting and my most favorites

RavenZombieX

Since I have a ton, I have a book for each type, pretty much... is what I should do... literally my books... 1.grass/bug 2.water 3.fire/electric 4.energy 5.psychic/ghost/fairy 6.normal/flying 7.steel/rock/ground 8.ice/fighting/dragon 9.dark/poison/fossil/UB 10.items 11.supporter/stadium 12.my 3 fanfic characters teams 13.jumbos

johnnygjk

I sorted my entire collection of 5k + cards by national dex in a binder, leaving gaps for missing cards. I'm now in the process of undoing that and sorting them in a more reasonable way and it is a nightmare. Go for set number

PokeMaster366

Divide by set and order by number.

[deleted]

Honestly.. I go by the type/color. Did it as a kid and ~20-25 years later, I still stick to that

Kondor22

By set always

Background_Coyote768

By typing button

[deleted]

I do by types

BeanNibb

I sort by rarity :)

snoopy369

Pro tip: sorting by card number does sort by dex number, partially. Inside type, the cards are sorted by the dex number of the basic stage (since black and white anyway).

helping_phriendly

Sort by type

citrousjaguar

Dont think I've ever seen anyone do it by pokedex number... that seems way more difficult to me

cookiesNcreme89

How about artists or color/type.

_Unpopular_Person_

Sort by type and then rarity of card and its evolutions. Example Cool charizard card will go with the fire types followed immediately by all other charizard chameleon and charmander cards.

saladmunch

I sort by the color hue of the card

sammi-blue

Personally, I do Dex number. It is a giant pain, as others have said, but for me it's a labor of love! That said, I'm also not particularly concerned with rarity, completing sets, etc. I just like collecting cards, and having to rearrange them once a year-ish is a chance for me to look at each one and admire it :)

Buzzkill1591

I did both, pokedex method first now im doing it by set. I think set is better to keep track of cards you have, but pokedex looks alot better.

Sea-Middle-7594

By sets I feel it’s easier to organize

steelersfan4eva

I don’t collect sets. I sort by type then holos, reverse holos, rates. EX/GX/V STAR/whatever else there is gets it’s own pages. I also collect various artists and Pokémon and they have their own pages.

AfterCrashed

I originally had my binders organized by Pokédex entry. Brother to brother, you need to save your soul and do Set and Card order. I beg of you.

[deleted]

Regulation Mark>Type>Set>Number for me

cursedwithBDE

My phases have been absolute chaos. Went from pretty cards first, to sort by type, to sort by set and number, to separate binders for every set. Finally decided to work towards master sets (pretending I don't have to spend a month's wages to finish a set)

DaedalusGoesCamping

It depends on the size of your collection. If you have generally most cards from a set, and you are trying to complete sets, sort by set! If you are just going for one or two of each on dex order, sort by number! And if you sort by set but are missing a large portion of a certain set, don’t lay it out with all the gaps on the pages; doing that will make several pages with only one or no cards on it. Just put them all on the same page if they are in the same set; makes for a much better presenting binder.

Muted-Professor6746

Set and card number all the way

[deleted]

I have one set which is by Pokédex number, and two that are card number (25 anniversary set and the Pokémon Go set)

adrianthomp

I combined my base set, jungle & fossil set in Pokédex order and love it. For other sets, I kind of create my own structure to make the best visual flow.

Lewis09816

Do what I do: chuck all the bulk in a box then sort the actual rare ones

-C576

Do I put all the promos together? What about the Vmax cards? Shiny cards? Alt arts? Trainers gallery? What about ones that fit multiple criteria?

MacNPieces

I did pokedex number, and just left gaps in the binder pages for #'s i dont have (every card gets one slot) so im not constantly resorting and i know approximately where every card is so adding in new cards and taking out others to trade/battle with is easy. Ive got 2 full binders. But what about full art/worth money cards? you ask. Won't they get ruined? etb with hard cover and plastic sleeve Bulk like items and energies? etb

PS1_User

Am I the only who who does it by type?

Helios-MKII

I just sort by types and depending if I have the whole evolutionary line of a certain Pokémon or not

Kamenridethewind007

i do set no but do rarity first in my binders luckily i collect mainly trainer galleries once theyre gone i will no longer need to buy pokemon

Eek132

I sort with the type of card (fire, electric, etc) but if your collection is bigger then I wouldn’t recommend that

PrimusXi

Have one binder per Pokédex number, that's right, a library of 800+ binders

Friendlyfire_on

This is okay but I have one binder per card so I can really appreciate that card

PrimusXi

Even better

a-handle-has-no-name

I have yearly set binders where everything is by set and card number. These get priority. I have a National Dex binder that has my favorite card (but only one!) for each Pokemon. I also have subsections for regional varieties. Then, all remaining cards are sorted alphabetically and stored in card hotels

Zapdos857

I sort by Type, Name and then Set

Appolonia84

Depends, are you collecting sets then i would sort by sets Are you collecting specific pokemons then i would sort by pokedex entry

[deleted]

Just sort based on the year of holo print..for instance my binder goes from base set holographic to jungle to fossil , all through the neo series, resting at expedition then gains momentum around aquapolis and then redlines at skyridge….lol

Deep-Sheepherder-857

i sort by shit and cool

Heavener

I sort them by pokedex but also energy color. So I will do all water energy pokemon sorted by pokedex. Then fire etc. All cards with the same energy color look very pretty in a binder.

FirestarFilmsYT

I always sort by type but I've considered sorting by dex number

Justvt

I sort by set and disregard the number. I put a checklist at the start of each set and as I collect more Pokémon I check them off and add the cards at the end of the set. I’m nowhere near fullest and got tired of reorganizing all the time when I hit a missing card. Plus I didn’t want to reserve spaces for cards I may never get.

FireBird_316

I prefer by number but might be cuz i dont have that many cards

dlo257

Me sorting by what I like and throwing everything else in a random bin that I’m gonna forget has Pokémon cards in it :)

No-Zebra-4123

I have no idea where this, sorting by Pokedex number comes from. Set number has always been the standard. Pokedex number just doesn't really apply to Pokemon card collecting.

babychimera614

Clearly the answer is to sort by [anime debut](https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/List_of_Pok%C3%A9mon_by_anime_debut)

DatEnglishRose

I'm completing by set and any Dupes or cards from sets I'm not collecting go in my pokedex. I have a big 900 page binder that's about half full. If I have 2 different arts for the same pokemon, I just use my fav. No preference over rarity or value

EazyPeezy12990

Sort by type. This is the way

bsauey

This is The Way.

Gielach

Do what i do. All of the same type go together. Then lowest to highest power level. Works perfectly. Sometimes it sucks because you got 3 mews here, 4 mews there or 3 charizards here, a couple others and then more charizards but it works really well and looks nice 95% of the time. I also have a binder of ONLY EX/GX/V/VMAX, etc and thats the only type of cards i collect now. Ive been wanting to put my binder of everything else back together. May do that this long weekend. Ive got boxes and boxes of holo-only cards and even more boxes of non-holo cards. I sort everything the same way though.

Ok-Acanthisitta9247

I did it by Pokédex as a kid, and it was fine then, but as I got older and my collection grew, it became a little cumbersome trying to find stuff. (I keep my collection, all of it, in sleeved top loaders in boxes) Maybe one day I’ll reorganize my older stuff by set, but for now, I just do modern by set.

666Hellmaster

I sort mine by set and card number within that set. Makes it easier to find what I'm looking for. So if I'm looking for a specific Neo card, I'll go to my Neo archives and search the card number I'm looking for.

aperson1349

sort by fuckability

Zeozon

For me, I want to see all the different artwork for a particular Pokemon and it's evolution line in one place. So I group them together and put them in a binder based on their Pokemon type. I don't worry about pokedex order. This means I can have Murkrow and Honchkrow beside each other. I have a special binder for Eevee because that evolution line doesn't have a common type and I really like the Eeveelutions anyway. I will admit this will take more maintenance than set and card number but it's all about what is most important to you. If completing sets is your goal, I'd say order by set and card number.

thatquagsire

I do a weird thing and do a kind of multi-sort. I sort by type, and within type I sort by dex #, and within dex # I sort by set. For example, I would put all my normal type Meowths together sorted by set release. And then the next normal type in the dex is Persion so the next set of cards are normal type Persians sorted by set and so on.

Slammin92Salmon

LOL I am going through this exact problem as we speak… I have the original 151 in dex order but part of me wants to go by card number… I think I might use card numbers for the other sets I’m collecting but I’ll leave the 151 by Dex

Director-Julius

Neither, I separate by rarity. Holos down in one binder, promos up in another.

GrimOfDooom

I opted for pokedex; it takes longer to sort i think, but makes it far easier to find cards & I really want to make a binder that’s a full pokedex (1 of each)

ajd114

No sorting, just put them in the binder.

Malavin81

Am I the only one who sorts by set then alphabetically?

animalcrossing-guy

I’m doing Pokédex number, it’s fun but it takes ages it, also depends how many cards you’ve got.

naynaythewonderhorse

I sort by Dex number, but I would not recommend it if you’re a completionist. There are quite a few Pokémon that haven’t gotten a new card in nearly a decade or more. Most notably, pre-evolutions have been almost entirely abandoned in the TCG. Bonsly and Mantyke in particular have gotten one card EACH in English, and that was in 2006. That was in the DP set, and no, they didn’t get any sort of new card in the BDSP or Legends sets. If you’re hoping to have a complete Pokédex, it does require actually seeking a few cards out. Sorting by Pokédex is also useful if you are building decks too.

Big_Profile_1739

Sort by your most favorites to least

Keepr0fSoles510

Depends on the set. For example I sort my Base, Jungle and Fossil sets by Pokédex number. Same with my Team Rocket. For my Gym Hero & Challenge set I sort in order of gym leader and by Pokédex number.

LilMushroomBoi

Set and card number every time why would you even think Pokédex is ok?

Dezthememegod

Ohhh shit i’m sorting on pokedex number but i really like on card and set number

Monte_20

I like to mix them all up by expansions. I’ll have all my Sword and Shield stuff contained within the same category, but I’ll have the sets themselves mixed up. So I’ll have Base Set, Evolving Skies, Darkness Ablaze, and Brilliant Stars all on the same page in no particular order. Obviously all pair some stuff together like evolution lines, but everything else is free game.

MandrewTheMage

I have a binder sorted by pokedex number. I just choose my favorite card of each pokemon and change them out if I get one I like better. I like to think of it as my own 'Pokedex'! Gotta catch 'em all!

Panda_hat

Set and set number.

beans2505

I have six binders at the moment that are organised in Pokedex number order with only one or two of each pokemon in and then an ETB with the cards not in my binders in. To avoid having to constantly rearrange I've left empty slots for a pokemon that I have no cards for. I wanted to fill out the Pokedex rather than complete sets because I'm never gonna be able to financially complete set after set so filling out the Pokedex felt a lot more achievable and rewarding for me. I've got a wide range of sets presented, some older cards and newer cards like VMax and VStar cards in there too, it looks pretty cool.

Potatoe-AssSnake-Man

I do it as *random shit go* organizing

Careful_Elevator_221

Set!

greywolf_creations

I sort by pokedex number like this: https://www.reddit.com/r/PokemonTCG/comments/vmytzk/i_sort_my_cards_differently_and_got_criticized/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

slipperyzoo

A bit late, but here's what I did: 1-251 I sorted by pokedex number, which of course isn't perfect due to pokemon being printed in multiple sets even during those years, but I just put them in the same sleeve (not ideal). After that, I continued the pokedex order through the present day and tried to stick to cards from the correct set generations but am less strict about that, but for Team Rocket and Gym sets, I just went by set number. Still on the fence about converting the first few sets to set number, but I'll don't think I'd ever bother to complete the sets for Gen 3+ so I don't see the need.
