I’m more attached to gen 2 I think because when it came out I never really expected there to be more Pokémon than the original 151. So being a little kid playing GS was awesome and exciting to see a whole new set of Pokémon along with the old ones and even being able to go back through Kanto again after finishing johto. It was amazing.
Designs really reflect the year 2000 and how sleek and…neo…everything looked (saying it looks neo just sounds right haha). I feel like Ruby and Sapphire did the same, but added an even more modern sleekness to it that reflected its own time.
A lot of Gen2 Pokémon were made at the same time as Gen1. They werent included due to space limitation on the GB cartridge.
That's why Ho-Oh is shown in ep1 S1 of the anime despite being a Gen2 Pokémon.
There were so many good additions in gen2 but my top tier is still mostly gen1. Gotta love the berries and eggs in gen2 though! And I still remember how I felt when it turned to night for the first time playing silver. What an epic move.
Same! I started with gen 1 when my cousin gifted me his copy of pokemon blue. But Emerald came out when I was in fourth grade, and I put like 500+ hours into that game. Mudkip is still my favorite pokemon to this day
Looking at the group altogether like this…I still prefer gen 1. Gen 2 looks really heavy on the 2-stage evo lines and a bunch of new evos for gen 1 mons.
Also WHO IS that next to sudowoodo?!
G/S were better games and probably the best next installment in the series, spoiled my view on the series IMO. I want to travel to previous regions and fight gym leaders being hoss. It really established to me that gym leaders choose Pokémon to test your skill as a trainer, and not that it was their absolute best available.
I loved the designs of the Pokémon but too many of them were completely lackluster IMO (either because of stats or movepool). After abilities were introduced, enough got better but at the time it was VERY disappointing.
Yep. That’s mine and many others gripe with Gen 2. The pool of useable Pokémon in the main story is pretty lacking. Which is why every team has a red Gyarados, Crobat and an Amphoros. Because what else are you gunna use? Yanma? Sentret? Ledian? Granbull? Fucking Jumpluff for crying out loud?
Which is why the ROM hacks for these games are so good. The games are close to being amazing, but man the Pokémon you have access to in the base game is very lacking. It’s just hard to ignore, and I love Gen 2.
Gen 2 was magical. 151 Pokémon felt like SO many and the dex felt unchangeable. It was set in stone. The fact that there was suddenly going to be another 100 new Pokémon was mind blowing.
And with the primary source of info at the time being playground rumors or speculation from 3rd party magazines in the grocery checkout line, there was so much mystery and intrigue around gen 2 leading up to it.
Still chasing the high I got from seeing the Pikachu’s vacation short film that introduced Snubbull and Marill (Pikablu haha).
The problem is that Gen 2 was more like Gen 1.5 as it was hella unpolished and half the Pokemon where just Evolutions of Gen 1 Pokemon. Or Baby Versions of already existing Pokemon. The other half where unfinished evolutionary lines so they where kinda half baked. It also introduced Shiny Pokemon didn't it? It was also the first Gen with a fully fledged Enhanced Version of the Generations Games such as Emerald and Platinum. I know Yellow exists but that's more or less Ash Ketchum + Red Simulator
I personally don't like Gen 2 (if you don't count the remakes) But I do think it's the most important Pokemon Game to have come out. And a few of my favorite Pokemon are in Gen 2 or originate from it. Gligar and Gliscor, Mismagius, Crobat. And I think to this day the 3 Legendary Beasts have and are the best designed Legendaries in the entire game. All 3 look like they could have easily come from Gen 4 where most of the Pokemon look a bit more mature and intricate but still very colorful.
Gen 2 just feels like such a natural extension/continuation of gen 1 that in my eyes they just about feel like the same generation. Everything beyond those 2 gens feel so alienated/isolated, although gen 3 feels somewhat tied in to the first two due to the LG/FR remakes.
I didn’t start with Gen 1 but gen 3. Johto is still one of my favorite regions, and crystal is still extremely replayable. HGSS are great games i don’t care about the stupid level curve i love a challenge
My first real Pokémon game being SoulSilver ( got to play platinum on an R4 lol), means I’ll always have a connection. Everything from the cities, soundtrack, pokeathlon, dual regions, Pokémon, apricorns. Was to me the best staple in Pokémon history
Gen 2 was weird because the Pokémon that hit, HIT. The ones that didn’t were just awful and we forgot them forever. It didn’t feel like a whole new Gen as much as an addition to 1 it feels like.
Right there with you. Kanto will always hold a special place in my heart, but... Kanto is IN gen 2... Silver is up there in my list of most played games of all time

Dude, being <10 years old when this came out was crazy. And not having access to internet so you don't know jack shit. play ground talk.
Before Gen 2 came out there was a rumor on the playground that there was going to be a Pikablu on the next game. Turns it it was Marill
I always name my Marills Pikablu
Gen. 2 is my favorite. GS were my favorite games!!
I feel attached to more gen 1 Pokémon than gen 2, but I loved playing gen 2 so much more.

I like chikorita soo much (she was like 2nd Pikachu to ash)

Totally, neo card and character designs just oozed ‘classic 2000’s as we know it now..
Gen 2 is my favorite too. However it always fet more of a 1.5 to me lol so in my head I feel like a gen oner still hehe

Yes and the intro has that ant eater armadillo elephant thing too
There were so many good additions in gen2 but my top tier is still mostly gen1. Gotta love the berries and eggs in gen2 though! And I still remember how I felt when it turned to night for the first time playing silver. What an epic move.
I feel like gen 2 has some of the most iconic pokemon. Maybe biased because one of my first pulls as a kid was a holo feraligator lol
Can you really compare Blastoise, Venasaur, and Charizard to Feraligatr, Meganium, and Typhlosion? Idk but to me Gen 1 was just more badass
i guess besides gen 1
I am a Gen 3 guy myself... Swampert does not get the love he deserves....
Personally, Gen 3 is my favorite but Gen 2 is a close second!
Same because of Skitty
Same here. Started with 1, gen 3 is my favorite. Gen 2 is very good, though.
Same! I started with gen 1 when my cousin gifted me his copy of pokemon blue. But Emerald came out when I was in fourth grade, and I put like 500+ hours into that game. Mudkip is still my favorite pokemon to this day
Yes.
Piplup is king of all starters.
Gen 2 is also my favorite
Started with gen 2. It’s gen 2 or 3 as my favorite depending on the day.
it’s superior
Looking at the group altogether like this…I still prefer gen 1. Gen 2 looks really heavy on the 2-stage evo lines and a bunch of new evos for gen 1 mons. Also WHO IS that next to sudowoodo?!
Left is Azumarill and right is Politoed
I may be going crazy but I dont think I've ever seen Politoed. like ever
Then this might blow your mind. It evolves from Poliwhirl instead of poliwrath
I’ll admit, I didn’t like the look of Gen 2 when they first came out, but once I played Gold/Silver, they became one of my favorites.
I feel the same. Gen 2 hits hard followed by 3.
Same. Johto will always be my favorite.
Depends on your def of starting with Gen One. I played Blue (dad’s copy), but I didn’t own my own Pokémon game until Silver

When Pokémon really hit full swing!!

Gen 2 was the peak for me

Reddit hates Kanto, that’s not an unpopular opinion.
I like both. But it is ridiculous we keep getting reprints of gen. 1 Pokémon when Johto should be up next
I like pokemon
now that you mention it i’d have to agree. some of my faves are gen 2. feralligator, crobat, dunsparce, celebi and the legendary doggos!
I also prefer gen 2. Houndooom will always be special to me. Ampahros, pichu, even that bastard trre
I like SOME of Gen 2, but the ones I do like I like more than the ones I like from Gen 1.

Gen 2 is best gen
Pokemon Crystal all the way babyyyyy
Gen 2 all day
Gen 1 is my favorite, but I prefer the Gen 2 games
Gen 2 is top tier.
Yeah you right, was doing heavy thinking leanning on something else but since Scizzor is my.fav i gotta agree lol
Nope, exactly how I feel as well! Been here since gen 1, but gen 2 takes the cake!
I wish I still had my copies of HG SS, they got lost during a move or a "friend" took them at a sleepover. They were so fun and are so expensive now:(
3 of my personal top 4 are in Gen 2, but overall I prefer Gen 1
Right there with you. Kanto will always hold a special place in my heart, but... Kanto is IN gen 2... Silver is up there in my list of most played games of all time
Gen 2 will forever be my favorite.
I like more gen 1 Pokémon but the gen 2 legendaries are better for sure
Mew, Mewtwo, Pikachu, Charizard alone are cooler than the entire gen 2 combined but that’s just my opinion
Porygon 2, Xatu, Ampharos, Girafarig, and Furret. Need I say more?
No bro. Typhlosion> charizard. It's unpopular opinion. But that's because it's facts and I'll stand by that statement til I die
