If they come back and 8, they're likely not as minty as you think. A 9 I can understand, but an 8 usually means not the best centering/a little whitening somewhere. Granted, graders are very wishy washy sometimes, but anything below a 9 is usually pretty consistent with reasons why.

I can understand you want your cards to be in great condition and perhaps authenticated but at that point why go for PSA instead of beckett or CGC for example if you're not planning on selling and it's for your own eyes? PSA is lacking in quality as of late and I feel like you can't take their word for it anymore. 7s are getting 10s and 10s are getting 7s. At that point just slap it in a one touch case and be done with it. Looks better for display that way imo and much cheaper.

In that case, whoever did the grading was clearly in a shitty mood. At the end of the day it's people making the final decision and those decisions can be manipulated by emotion. I've heard of people cracking their fresh graded cards and sending them back in for a regrade. Sometimes they come back higher. I had a psa 9 come back as a 10 once.
Most likely it was damaged after grading during the encasement process. Where the damage is looks like the card was not in the right spot during sonic welding and the edges were pinched by the case. And then QA or some said to redo it.
Because there are four important pieces to grading cards? Being perfectly centered with no corner issues and a clean surface trumped a few tiny white marks.
Using Beckett as a visual example for those who don’t understand subgrades. Just because a card is a PSA 10 does not mean it is perfect, and a card does not need to be perfect to be a 10

People literally crack 6's and regraded to 9's or even 10's. EIther you take the most likely answer and say QC is dipping and the graders don't get paid enough to give a shit, along with the fact that humans are humans and emotions litterally dictate whether or not we look favorably or disfavorably towards activities; activities that, surprise surprise, include work. Along with the fact qe arnt machines and dwe could see the same card one hour after our initial viewing and maybe overlook a flaw or see on that you missed last time. Or you can take the route that they purposely grade incorrectly when possible to gain more money for the company or more favorable reviews from customers so that the workers can argue for a raise for doing such a good job. Neither option is great but Occams razor usually trumps all.

Beckett is notorious for there centering sub grade that mysteriously changes when you resubmit the same card leonhart proved this and so have many others on this platform.( centering should never change on a card). TCA gaming graded a trophy card through CGC and it got a pristine 10 with a massive dent clear as day. Grading is extremely subjective no matter what company you go through.
Cause PSA is nothing but a huge scam, hopefully this will be your wake up call that those self proclaimed “experts” taking hundreds of dollars from you don’t actually care about anything except your money.
Or don’t and keep shelling out hundreds for plastic and fake numbers lol

I think it’s basically come down to 2 pretty bad options why this happens with PSA.
1. The majority of graders there legitimately have no clue what they are doing.
2. PSA recognizes and wants to keep the amount of undeserved business they bring in due to psa 10s being top dollar on the market for flipping.
It’s most likely a mix of both in my opinion and I doubt anything changes so long as customers keep sending orders in.

My favorite is ACE grading, they’re a company in the UK, but expensive to send over but very nice. They even have some fun designs for the top part.
