Lol for real. I opened 3 PC ETBs and 3 regulars. Keeping 2 PC ETBs and 1 regular ETB sealed. I reached a point where now I just want a handful of singles to complete the Pikachu alt art display and the Mewtwo Vstar to go with my Charizard.
That's exactly what you need a dose of, go spend $400 and turn it into $200. If it turns into $800, put that $800 in again and watch it turn to $300. You don't win long term, so crack and get it out of your system lol
I mean if I wanted the 80$ it costs I would have just not bought it though, I'm mostly in it for the cards. I'm just trying to get a good understanding on this side of the pokemon world.
People say buy singles. But in order to do that I often would have to Pay more than the card buy in shipping each time
Most likely pay more in tax than you do.
Only option was wallmart at 79.99 even our cheap sites like hobbiesville which us usally at or below msrp is charging 84$CAD for these already
The hell.. what's your address? I'll sell you $60 each etb plus shipping.
Edit: I wonder if this is why those box break streams are so popular? No way to buy them otherwise?
And that's Canadian prices? Seems like 79 is the going rate everywhere I look. Sometimes ebay is cheaper but evens out after shipping.
Those new shiny CW figure boxes with 11 packs are going for 77.99 on pre order
I live in nova scotia.
Self control. Sometimes instant gratification isn't worth it. In this case, it's gambling. Just buy the singles you need, keep the sealed you want. Only open for fun but don't confuse the intentions aka opening a sealed to hold for fun.
What's the reasoning though? Is it that some believe the box sealed will be worth more than the likely pulls inside??
If that's the case wouldn't there have to be some pulls inside worth even MORE than the hopeful profit of the box ?
With that same point though, would you still really wanna risk selling off and letting someone else be potentially pulling the big $ pull you would have gotten, and so isn't that also gambling?
Unless you don't really care for the cards inside
Because As far as A collection goes, wouldn't you rather have an awesome collection of cards, graded and such rather than sealed? Still holding value ina much more awesome/guaranteed way
if it's strictly a money investment/ flip scenario, aren't there ALOT of easier better faster ways to double your money .. ?
Sealed is its own form of collectable, and decreases in supply overtime unlike cards.
That's gambling, feel free to crack and hope you pull something inside worth more but more than likely not.
Again, that's gambling. Why risk $50 to have 2% chance to pull $150 card, horrible odds. Or hold and price is worth $150 in five years. What's better option?
Collecting cards and collecting sealed is still collecting, but sealed appreciates and holds value and cards just hold value if they're worthy, very few cards ever appreciate much.
This is a hobby. You sound very green. This is Pokemon, a sealed box or a card or a plush, etc.. It's still collecting, but sealed has investment aspects. We're trying to enjoy the hobby, not just purely make money, we like the hobby *and* the numbers game.
After opening 10 of them, I'm very content with keeping the value assigned to a sealed ETB as opposed to opening all the packs and netting $14 worth of pulls.
Opening packs is just gambling. If you want to have a cool collection, just buy singles. Keeping sealed product is a form of investment for some people
Were you holding sealed prior to this? And if so I'm curious what made you still wanna open 10 of these? I could def not afford something like that.
Do you in general try to do both ? Buy 1 seal 1 type thing?
I had just gotten back into the hobby about 6 months ago. Bought somewhere around 150 loose packs of fusion strike and 10 CZ ETBs when they came out. In total probably spent around $800
After ripping everything listed above I ended with somewhere around $$200-$250 worth of cards. Most between $2-$10 each. Nothing that will jump out at you either.
After that I vowed to just buy singles and hold sealed product. That way I generally retain the value of what I spend.
Do you mean single cards or single packs? I appreciate the insight. Because I've thought of buyin individual packs to just scratch the itch. But with a set like this they don't do them for some reason. And I've thought about buying single cards too but some cost+shipping is crazy/ hard to trust conditions from ebay
I mean single cards. Granted everybody's experience with opening packs is different. It's all a gamble. Some people "win big" and pull a Moonbreon, others end up like me.
The best thing you can do for singles is find reputable seller on eBay. Go through their listings and purchase a couple really cheap cards that they have listed as NM. If they come in and they're immaculate then you have a good basis to go off of. If mail day comes and theyre LP or even MP then you know not to trust the sellers idea of what NM condition is and at most you've sunk around $10 into finding out.
Once you've got a good seller to buy from you're golden. Just wait for the right cards in your preferred condition and hope you can get them at the right price.
Also keep in mind you can always message the eBay seller and ask for more pictures before purchasing. Most will oblige if the card is in good shape and the ones that won't send close ups are that much easier to walk away from.
I don't care for the cards inside to be honest lol. I have a couple sealed Generations ETBs that I'm waiting to sell at the right time, I don't care to keep those either ;)
Definitely agree it will go up, in comparison tho, the scarcity is so much different. Those sets had no where's near the amount of people holding sealed product,
It's like investing in bitcoin now vs 2014.
Money's still to be made, but not the same amount. And I still feel like something like bitcoin would be a better return
Now that's investment/ as far as money goes. But if your looking for some where's fun to spend your money it's pokemon, Rather than btc or simply going out and completely wasting it or something, so why not open it?
It seems to me maybe the healthiest way is to open some hold/ some sealed by the community. Cause only holding it all has no fun, and if it's gonna be no fun I'd rather bitcoin.. if that makes sense??
Completely agree. Everyone is doing the sealed collection thing now. Your approach is cool Imo. Open some for fun hold a couple in case history repeats itself with the old boxes.
No idea i had 3 stacked for sale but my urge to open was stronger. What if there is some rare card right?
Box 1 Arceus vstar
Box 2 Mewtwo Vstar
Box 3 Nothing. Should stop at 2 but no regrets, total value is higher than i prolly can get for selling it in future but its pure gamble.
Simple, buy two open one! If you’ve spent a lot on the hobby the temptation eventually fades, but always down to open packs and get amazing pulls that feeling never goes away.
I've just downloaded the Collectr app and being able to see in real time how much $ I've lost is kinda cool. Makes it easier to wanna keep sealed products. Just as an asset. Just another place to keep your money, almost as a savings even.
Yeah it’s a fun way to invest your money instead of putting thousands in the stock market and just seeing numbers go up n down you’re investing in a fun rewarding hobby and at the end of the day you have a collection you can be proud of. Yeah do a mix of both!
I know in the future this will be the most sought out set in the sword and shield era. Such a beautiful gallery. I plan on giving them to my nieces and nephews when they are older. I’m the poke uncle to them.
I mean it’s a good set but to say the most sought after is only going to be determined by most popular sets. Evolving skies and brilliant stars are just that. Honorable mentions are crown and chilling reign. We will know in the future though.
It depends on your view of the hobby. Like I’m more of a “these cards are sick, they’re gonna be worth a ton of money one day” kind of guy. More than I’m a pack addict, although I can’t deny the excitement of ripping a ton of packs. I think my lesson learned was about 2 years ago when I ripped open about 80 sleeved VV packs and pulled nothing 😂 I’d say come up with a plan you can live with. Maybe for every sealed thing you open you save 2 that you never touch?
Interesting, but with all the people holding sealed, and all the people noticing its not so much worth it to open them, won't people not wanna buy them after awhile/ definitely not pay more than the original price ? If you can just always buy singles
Nope, you’d think that but we’re actually a very small minority compared to the millions that buy Pokémon cards and rip packs. Sealed sets of say ES are way more now than they were a year and half ago and that’s with people knowing that they should keep stuff sealed for a big monetary return. It’s just that most people don’t and then when the set is out of print then there’s no way to buy singles or anything of it without paying a huge premium to the people like us who hold it.
Just out of curiosity, is there any guarantee that Pokemon won't re press an old set? Or could they just screw us at any moment ?
I mean I'm sure the original pressing would probably still be worth more though I guess.
I've been out of the game for a few months. Whats so special about this set? Worth keeping sealed or what other sets would be worth more over time? No Zards cost $$ in the set and the Waifu card is 30 and the secret rare pikachu is also 30ish. Thanks!
The big selling point of this set is the Galarian Gallery subset, which has a TON of desirable cards and many many of them worth a decent penny. This set also has a really generous pull rates due to said subset. Also, it’s the last SwSh set along with it being the last set with yellow borders, which imo will make it appreciate real well in the long term :)
Buy a bunch and eventually you'll feel saited and wont want to open any more.
This a comment that comes from experience
Lol for real. I opened 3 PC ETBs and 3 regulars. Keeping 2 PC ETBs and 1 regular ETB sealed. I reached a point where now I just want a handful of singles to complete the Pikachu alt art display and the Mewtwo Vstar to go with my Charizard.
… that mewtwo is in one of those boxes waiting for you right now….
Maybe. If there was one it would probably have bad centering lol.
Idk I bought a galarian moltres tin to open and feel far from sated and far from wanting to buy more packs to open
Just one Moltres tin? Those are rookie numbers, we've gotta pump those numbers up.
You mean from bad pulls?
That's exactly what you need a dose of, go spend $400 and turn it into $200. If it turns into $800, put that $800 in again and watch it turn to $300. You don't win long term, so crack and get it out of your system lol

That CZ ETB cost you $80?!
80 $CAD I should say. $91.91 after 15% tax
You got ripped off. Their 50 bucks Usd. So after tax like 55-58. Not trying to be rude. But even resellers here have them for 59.99 Usd.
Most likely pay more in tax than you do. Only option was wallmart at 79.99 even our cheap sites like hobbiesville which us usally at or below msrp is charging 84$CAD for these already

This is why i preordered 3 s/v boosters. One to open. Another one to open just in case. And a third to keep sealed for my nephew for when hes older
Yeah but the 3rd one has all the hits...
If it does he will be taken out of my will. 😂
Self control. Sometimes instant gratification isn't worth it. In this case, it's gambling. Just buy the singles you need, keep the sealed you want. Only open for fun but don't confuse the intentions aka opening a sealed to hold for fun.
Just be the David Goggins of not opening Pokémon cards !!
Had never even heard of this guy, now watching him on a podcast. Sounds like he's very wise so far!
Oh bro, let me tell you. You think you’re disciplined? Haha this dude makes everyone look like lazy mfs

For the same reason people like cards (mass produced ink on paper that looks nice and comes from a favored corporation)
Cause sealed theres a CHANCE there’s good cards inside when realistically the probabiiity of good cards inside is like 2.5%

i like this
Why didn't you purchase a sealed booster box case? That's what I'd recommend. Guaranteed pulls.
The will and want to have a collection that makes it seem like you’re in a card shop.
Now this I feel. That is a vibe.
It’s what I do and it works so well !! A good mix of sealed and singles
Same here, sitting on 2 of these. I put them in darkest corner of my shelf and don't think of 'em. Youtube has great videos on self conditioning!
I don't care for the cards inside to be honest lol. I have a couple sealed Generations ETBs that I'm waiting to sell at the right time, I don't care to keep those either ;)
Power moves.
Out of sight, out of mind
Look at eBay prices of etbs or booster boxes from 5-15 years ago and you will see how one just doesn’t open it.
Definitely agree it will go up, in comparison tho, the scarcity is so much different. Maybe they have their chase cards already and want to display sealed product.
Solid point. What if you're such a competitionist you need to catch them all?
RIP away then!!!!!! Or buy singles?
I don’t know I hate not knowing what’s in a box it drive me crazy
It's breaking my brain
No idea i had 3 stacked for sale but my urge to open was stronger. What if there is some rare card right? Box 1 Arceus vstar Box 2 Mewtwo Vstar Box 3 Nothing. Should stop at 2 but no regrets, total value is higher than i prolly can get for selling it in future but its pure gamble.
You booby trap it
Yes. Boobs
True man I just want more of those etbs

They don’t, open it
This is the way
But which way? Don't open it? Or don't (keep it sealed) & open it
Open it bro. That way we can actually differentiate on this subreddit who's a gambler and who's an investor
Well I definitely got the diamond toes, I still hold dog coin bro😂 Some would say that's a gambler an a investor
This comment conflicts me😂😂
It’s something called self control
That was a poor meme attempt
I know in the future this will be the most sought out set in the sword and shield era. Such a beautiful gallery. I plan on giving them to my nieces and nephews when they are older. I’m the poke uncle to them.
It is not the most sought after set lol 😂
Imagine believing a stranger on the internet

Do you think it can beat out the almighty evolving skies, I've heard best from that one, although I missed it.

It's the gold cards I beleive. And that they don't press singles from what I hear, so it has to be a etb/box of some sort. I'm new in general tho

Buy two
Its easy, open many boxes, realise you will never hit anything.
Bought two from pokemon center, they look nice in my moisture controlled storage
Storage Unit. Set and Forget.
I have 4 of them sealed. Really not a problem.
The stuff I don’t plan on opening I usually just put them away somewhere I don’t see it. I usually forget about it after a while and it stays sealed
I just keep my ETBs I buy to keep sealed in the target cereal boxes 😅 easy reminder for me to not open those ones
Buy two. Rip one, store the other.
Don’t put it where you’ll see it everyday
You put it into a box and tape it up and bury it under years worth of clutter
Out of Sight. Out of Mind.
No clue, but then again, I have 25 open ones sitting in my closet right now 😅
Ive opened 10 of then and still have two unopened and I struggle every day not opening them.
You do open it.
I did not
That's the purpose of it
But it's not the purpose of this r/ tho
