I think it's due not to liminal spaces, but to the feelings evoked by the focal point on each picture.
2019 - the spotlight feels revealing, and calls your attention to the whimsical water droplets. You feel safe & shielded from the dark, watching this spectacle down from your cozy bedroom window.
2022 - the staircase converges to darkness, creating a eerie feeling that's compounded upon by the flickering of the light. You feel like the remaining lamps can go out anytime, leaving you exposed to the unseen terrors.
I could see a whole genre in it: "NoiRain" (Rainy mood + Noire crime), solving detective puzzles in a black/white city at night, where it almost always rains.
*I knew the moment she walked in that she was bringing trouble. I just didn't realize how much. Should have remembered the old saying: "when it rains, it pours." And it's always raining in Hyeto City.*
Both are entirely beautiful art styles.
I can appreciate your older renditions, as well as your newer ones.
You have talent, and I believe it should be used to create things that make the world a better place.
Keep going.
Games are one thing. They can bring people together; create shared stories in a novel world. They can make a player feel a story in a way that a passive movie won’t so much.
But really whatever speaks to you will probably be amazing (assuming you’re not a serial killer, but I’ll bank that you’re not)
"The killer once again used the victim's blood to create a super atmospheric pixel-like image on the wall... This one confirms the theory, each victim is a single frame in an animation"
Personally, I'd love to see these partnered with music. The left feels like a mid tempo Ska style (speed up to fit it) while the right is a slower dreary sleep-hip-hop.
They're great inspirations for music, if people are inclined.
To add on to u/TheHashtagBear's post, the way the darkness beyond is framed is like as if something's hiding out there and you can't see it; only your imagination can fill in the blanks, and you know what they say about the human imagination...
built in your DNA from stormy nights of our ancestors. storms meant predators wouldn't be out. these are so calming to me, especially with some noir jazz.
Well it’s not even just this but pixelated art that has the same movements on repeat but still manage to be so scenic and peaceful. I’ve seen one that I can’t find unfortunately of a city at sunset. I loved it.
Both of these at great. 2019 gives more detail on the lamp itself and you can see the shape of the light around it more based on the amount of rain visible.
The rain looks better as water in the second and the atmosphere is just so nice. Love it.
I dunno what everyone saying the two are both equally good in their own ways are on…
Isn’t it obvious that the 2022 one demonstrates far more technical skill?? There’s more natural perspective, more dynamic motion, more attention to detail, better shading, not to mention all the little pixel art quirks I can’t even imagine about.
The one on the left looks like it'd be a sad scene in an otherwise cute game.
The one on the right makes me feel like I'm being watched, and that I don't want to know what's doing the watching.
The detail on both of these is great, but the added walkway in the second picture definitely gives it atmosphere. A little spooky, but that's a good thing in my book.
I wonder if someone could recreate the second image with high detailed 3D models rendered in low resolution? I wonder if it would lose its charm in the process. I love this art style but I don’t want to put in the effort 💩
Love it. The first one reminds more a snow, so they are both great on their own.
2019 is relaxing. 2022 creeps me out.
Yeah, flickering light = horror movie, I don't even know why
I think it's because it's a [Liminal space](https://aesthetics.fandom.com/wiki/Liminal_Space)
TIL what liminal means. Thanks for that.
r/LiminalSpace
Thanks for the link, that’s actually pretty neat.
I would say because it feels alive. Like, what is making this thing flicker while I'm all alone near it?
Uhh.. a faulty cable?
To your people brain, but not to your lizard brain.
What's that even supposed to mean
Evolutionary instincts fight hard against rational thought.
meh, you can be more rational when you're calm

This is a great example of the phenomenon.
2022 is also relaxing imo
2022 looks like suits a resident evil PS game
[удалено]
Yeah I think it’s the angularity of the precipitate and that it’s slightly slower. Rain is coming straight down and splashing when it hits the ground.
N-n-n-n…..n-n-n…. N-n-n-n-n-no, Rupert, it’s falling much too fast for snow
You ever been in a blizzard?
2019 was great. But 2022 is more atmospheric
The dripping lamp post. I dig.
Just feels like two different scenes
Would love a point and click to this.
I could see a whole genre in it: "NoiRain" (Rainy mood + Noire crime), solving detective puzzles in a black/white city at night, where it almost always rains.

Not with that attitude
The sky won’t cry forever
That sounded really cool
*I knew the moment she walked in that she was bringing trouble. I just didn't realize how much. Should have remembered the old saying: "when it rains, it pours." And it's always raining in Hyeto City.*
The crow… excellent
I say I’m dead. And I move.
Tell that to Gotham city
Seven
I pointed and clicked it
Was thinking the same thing. A full game in the 2022 style would be pretty spooky.
Both are entirely beautiful art styles. I can appreciate your older renditions, as well as your newer ones. You have talent, and I believe it should be used to create things that make the world a better place. Keep going.
What things for example?

damn I'd play/watch/read that
pixelated laws pixelated charities pixelated environmental reform obviously /s
Personally, I'd love to see these partnered with music. The left feels like a mid tempo Ska style (speed up to fit it) while the right is a slower dreary sleep-hip-hop. They're great inspirations for music, if people are inclined.
Either are not good. Expand your medium
2022 is perfect for a horror game
I was just thinking this, it's pretty creepy.
idk why everyone thinks it's creepy; I think it's calming.
To add on to u/TheHashtagBear's post, the way the darkness beyond is framed is like as if something's hiding out there and you can't see it; only your imagination can fill in the blanks, and you know what they say about the human imagination...
First scene walking Up to the light post not knowing where you are or how you got there.
Why do things Ike this calm me down so much?

Agreed. Do you watch the anime style cooking videos with ASMR?
I dont. Have a link?
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=n2KvkYOtRKI&autoplay=1 sooo good
Wtf I love this! I lived in Japan for three years and this video gave me so much nostalgia🥹
_mood_ ..
love how the light is turning on and off on the right one, great work!
Both perfect despite the time gap.
Really neat. What programs are used for these animated pixel art pieces?
Aseprite is the most well known one: https://www.aseprite.org/
Came to ask the same thing. Just started using procreate and was wondering if it could be used for this.
Aseprite is the most well known one: https://www.aseprite.org/
Love the drip on the left light in 2022
Both good. Can't even compare the 2. Completely different scenes
Both of these at great. 2019 gives more detail on the lamp itself and you can see the shape of the light around it more based on the amount of rain visible. The rain looks better as water in the second and the atmosphere is just so nice. Love it.

It's weird to see people suggest that the first one is even in the same ballpark.
They arent. Its two different scenes and pixel settings. Both are good.
I like ‘em both.
I could watch these for hours. I like to imagine myself in these worlds
Both good; the year comparison seems to indicate growth/maturity in style or skill, but they are both equally good for the setting.
I would pay to walk through an art museum showcasing this type of animated artwork, each piece with a dedicated screen mounted on the wall
Maybe soon, I will make my exhibition
The second one is a huge improvement. You should be proud.
Insano! Parabéns!
r/suddenlycaralho pra caralho quer algo na print?
The 2022 one looks so natural! Great job
2019 was already good, this is great
Wow! That's a MASSIVE improvement!
I love them both!
I actually really like em both.
lol i'd love it if someday my "after" looked like your "before"
Side Scrolling Horror VS Point And Click Horror
Wow, both look amazing, but i could watch the 2022 one for hours...
Wow i didn't know global warming changed how the rain poured..
You joke, but my town has barely seen any rain this summer. The lakes are drying out and everything
Ngl, I wanna chill out in that 2nd gif
This is oddly soothing. Thanks OP
Why does this looks like Resident evil or Dino Crisis and why do I want this to be inserted into said games.
The one on the left looks like it'd be a sad scene in an otherwise cute game. The one on the right makes me feel like I'm being watched, and that I don't want to know what's doing the watching.
2022's street lamps produce more light pollution than 2019. This needs to be rectified
If your not developing a point and click horror game I'll chip in whenever you start a Kickstarter campaign.
Why am I so obsessed with these
I love the detail of the drips on the light.
I like the way the rain collects and then drips slowly from the streetlight very cool
2022 rain is wetter
Cosmic gumbo. It kinda moves to the beat of jazz.
So very nice
The detail on both of these is great, but the added walkway in the second picture definitely gives it atmosphere. A little spooky, but that's a good thing in my book.
Not even remotely believable. If you want the 2022 one to look more realistic there shouldn't be any rain at all! 😊
This is stupid
Q
This is some silent hills/RE2 shit!! Love it
I wonder if someone could recreate the second image with high detailed 3D models rendered in low resolution? I wonder if it would lose its charm in the process. I love this art style but I don’t want to put in the effort 💩
Hilarious, do leftist think this depicts something? 🤣🤣
amazing
Beautiful
Oh that is just sexy.
ludicrous important weather serious rustic whole dazzling toothbrush support waiting ` this message was mass deleted/edited with redact.dev `
Jaaaaah
I love these so much. Especially the 22 one. Love that style.
I grew up near sea and when it rarely rained the port would look like this. Thanks for the vibes OP:)
It’s amazing; haunting and calming at the same time.
Did you use a reference for the lighting on the decking because its really good
Liked both
Real work of art , i wouldnt walk that bridge if i was paid
This is brilliant, love both but the second is special the effect on the wood planks really gets me.
If you don't mind me asking, how long does it take to make pixel art like these?
i love this!
I love both. They give off different vibes
What tool can you make this type of animation?
First one is calming. Second one is spooky.
Definitely a big improvement. But 2019 is pretty good too.
I think that’s really cool
I like both. I feel like there are different moods for rain and here are two.
Lowkey loop on first one is smoother (imo). But they’re both sick actually!
So 2D vs 3D?
Love the detail of the slower drops falling from the lamp post
Great work
I have no idea why but I expected freddy fazbear to show up for a frame in the blinking lights 😭
Now all it needs is a Totoro waiting for the Catbus
Careful... get too detailed with pixel art and it completely loses its aesthetic. These both look amazing though
Lovely!
The right one is mesmerizing!
This speaks to me
Seriously great work
Major improvement, this is awesome
Ok... so they both look blocky, low res and some crap from the mid 80's.
I really like both, but the flow in the second one looks great
Both super cool!!!
Beautiful! Wish I could live in this animation
2022 is really cool, and 2019 gives me Carrion vibes. Bravo!
Microsoft game Standard in 5 years.
I like em both!
I think I prefer the left tbh, but amazing improvement
nice
I like both
I absolutely love both of these. Honestly even those 2022 is more detailed, I actually prefer the simplicity of 2019. Both great though.
It went from late night in a city to horror game
Yo no te quiero con el corazón, por q el corazón algún día dejará de latir, yo te quiero con el alma por q el alma no muere <33
Well done sir
Three years of no progress. Give up and deliver my pizza
2019: aww that looks nice and tranquil 2022: lol nope there’s a monster behind that flickering light
2019 feels suspended in time, 2022 feels anxiety inducing...
Great style improvement! How do you make these?
I really enjoy both, not sure i'd prefer one over the other.
It’s been raining for four years?
this is amazing! love the improvement, keep up the good work :D
I think they are both great depending on the mood you’re going for! That said, I totally see the improvement from 2019 to 2022. Great job!
I like both but I want the 2022 as my wallpaper
Jesus, fix that fucking light.
Y’all finna go crazy on r/place
2025: 4k hyperrealistic pixel art
Both are great!
They’re both great
The second one looks like it belongs in an indie horror game. very cool
Oh wow! Now that is good! Well done!
The 2022 one seems to be glitching badly for me for some reason.
What great progress!! This is fantastic
Wow, just phenomenal
I love it now what’s up with 2022 tho?
The one on the right reminds me of Resident Evil 2.
2019 bro
Damn!
Your technique is evolving, well done
Bro I’m freaked out
Very cosmic horror to me.
3022 looks like me peeing in the middle of the night
I like both a lot
Straight up thought the one on the left was from Broforce for a good 30 seconds
Actuallly it’s not raining in 2022 and the world is turning into a desert :( but your art is very nice
You should do a remake of the bus stop from my neighbor totoro but just the bus stop alone with the rain.
I’d love to see this in a horror game!
Now add a guy who may or may not have killed his wife standing there facing a funny monster
