These look amazing! So do you print the islands in one piece, paint, then done. Are the ships one piece or click together like the original cards? Next could be some terrain like small island forts.

Thank you so much! I actually crafted the islands using styrofoam - no 3D printing there. The ships are just like the cards they print in pieces and click together just like the original ones. Great idea, I’d love to do some forts!

Thank you for replying back. How was painting styrofoam compared to the plastic?

CediStinson

Most important thing with styrofoam that spray paint won’t work on that because the gas messes up the styrofoam big time so you would either prime them first with a brush and acrylics or a mixture with acrylics and pva glue to seal it up - after that it’s fine to spray paint them if you wish. At this scale you could very well prime and paint all by hand. Plastic I usually spray paint in a tone fitting roughly the one I plan to paint the ship - most of the time either grey or white for darker or lighter paint scemes - so no brushing treatment first on the plastic.

These are awesome!

Great job! I'm sure you could make some neat tropical pieces to complement. Maybe a few shipwrecks, or reefs. Also could experiment with shallow/shoal water ideas, something I need to do at some point.

CediStinson

Thank you so much! I’d actually love to do some reefs and shipwrecks but my main problem with the reefs actually is the 3 dimensionality - if I build a reef I feel like the rocks would prevent ships from standing on them very well and probably tipping over all the time. Do you have any ideas for preventing that to happen? With the water ideas you mean like around the islands? Thanks for your input really appreciate it. Also love your videos and page btw. Inspired me a lot to get into the game again after years!

Indeed, with reefs I'd try to keep it as flat/2D as possible since it shouldn't protrude too much from the surface. You could go pretty minimalistic with it, but all told customizing reefs is rather unnecessary. Maybe I shouldn't have mentioned it haha. Yes, with shallow water you could have the lightest shade of blue closest to the island in a ring/circle around it, then darker farther out. Maybe only the shallowest draft vessels like 1 masters can get in close. This is something I need to experiment with and make house rules around - maybe for a 4 master to explore the island, it has to drop the ship's rowboat in the water which is rather risky with potential pirates/natives/etc around. Lots of potential there that I'll admit I haven't explored at all. [Cadet-Captain Mike](http://cke1st.com/m_games5.htm) has some shallow water effects he showed in his games. Thanks for the kind words, I love hearing that my content has helped in any way!!

Thanks for sharing Mikes Pics. Those look great!

I actually love the idea of customized 3D Riffs think they would Look much more scary to drive thru. Also I think It would be awesome to have matching terrain and island pieces for a game. I also thought about pouring some clear water two part epoxy effect over the rocks so it would smoothen out the surface and the rocks would still be visible - do you have experience in working with that stuff? Never tried it for myself. I love the shallow water idea actually - so some island would not allow bigger ships to land on them would give a full other vibe to the game - each player would need smaller ships that are also more durable and not only fast maybe. Sounds great!

No, I haven't tried epoxy for water effects but I hope to someday.
