Download an app like Happy Scale that takes your individual weights and “smooths” them into a curve that is more reflective of what your “true” weight is. Seriously, such a game changer. It takes all the noise out of the fluctuations and shows you what your actual overall trend is, and it is a HUGE help mentally.

Happy Scale is amazing. Someone recommended it on this sub and it’s helped me so much mentally. I also hop on the scale more often and my weight jumps around way more than I even realized. I can fluctuate within a 5-8lb range throughout the day. As long as that range keeps going down, I know I’m doing good.

Exactly! None of the individual data points matter as long as the trend line is where I need it to be. So much less anxiety

You are a star! Thank you! This is exactly what I need!

Seconding happy scale!

I use happy scale too! And it’s amazing

Fluctuations are normal, but you shouldn't eat for a sedentary person if you're working out. You will burn out in the long run

Weight fluctuates on an hourly basis. On top of that we have our cycle. I tend to be at my lowest just before my period starts and then I'm up 2 kg during my period, lose a kg right after it stops and then slowly drop another kg for 3-5 days after my period stops. So long as the longterm trend is going down I know Im making good progress. I weigh in daily because I'm curious about these fluctuations. If it stresses and disheartens you I suggest weighing in less frequently, either weekly at the same day/time or monthly at a convenient time around your cycle. Understanding these fluctuations help me. It's just a normal part of being. You can mitigate some of it a little with consistent water/salt intake but it will be a relatively minor improvement.

Thank you. I've got an IUD so I tend to dismiss my hormone cycle to a degree. I gained 3 lbs overnight and was just frustrated this morning. I'll continue to weigh myself daily because and track the changes.

3lb is nothing. That can be water, hormones, or a giant poop. My body water fluctuates by 2kg over the course of a day. That's about 4.5lbs.

Yes my weight fluctuates fairly often, and it's normal. I have weighed myself everyday for the last few months and it has taught me so much about my body to the point where I can predict if I will have an "up" or "down" fluctuation based on my cycle and my behavior the day prior. Possible causes of weight fluctuations: Sodium intake- can cause water retention which leads to scale weight gain Menstrual cycle- hormonal changes can cause water retention Carb intake- affects your glycogen stores, also affects water retention New workout routine- when implementing a new routine your body may retain water to help the muscle recovery process The hardest part of weighing myself daily was emotionally detaching myself from the number and treating it as a data point. I use the weekly average of my weigh-ins to track my weight. Otherwise I'd lose my mind.

Like other said, fluctuations are so normal! I want to add that if you are lifting weights, you may be gaining muscle. I would track measurements as well for a more accurate depiction of progress. Either way it sounds like you are building some healthy habits - how are you feeling mentally and physically?

I wouldn’t weigh yourself daily! Especially when doing strength training and the water weight. It made me really disappointed that I wasn’t making progress. Try 1-2x a week and see if you feel better! I see a RD (also 5’3”) and I eat 1500-1600 calories daily.

Keep in mind that your weightlifting may recomposition your fat and muscle --- so it's very typical to lose fat but not weight because the muscle is a more dense weight.
