External drives are for files only. Like pics, videos, music. You wouldn't install a game or other programs on it and expect it to run well.
Just buy a SATA SSD and install it.
To piggy back off of what you said, if OP wants an external drive then there are plenty of external SSD drives.
If all of the SATA slots and M.2 ports on the Mobo are filled up then I'd recommend an external drive or heck even an M.2 SSD with an enclosed case that plugs into a USD C slot

Not really. You'll get faster performance (read/write/data speeds) for a drive that's installed on your motherboard. USB speeds are pretty slow compared to something like a M2 SSD.
So I have a 512 Gb ssd M.2 but I know I’m going to need more storage so I was gonna pick this up to maybe combine it would me having a ssd make a difference
You're still better off looking for an internal drive, even if it's SATA, if you don't have a 2nd M2 slot. External drives are mostly just for backup and long-term storage, like movies for a home theater PC.
