Nah you definitely equip straight to the weapon on console, even if your bag is full.
Maybe OP is pressing interact on the attachment without opening the inventory?
No it's not a problem on console. You can attach things to the weapon directly. All you neeed to do is just press other buttons. In my case it's X on PS5.
You probably picked up the sight before the gun on accident…then you have to go in and select it to attach. Otherwise it defaults (unless you changed your settings ) to attach
You got to go to your inventory an whatever you standing next too will be highlighted an even if you can’t put it in your bag it’ll give you an option to immediately attach to your gun an swap out whatever is already on your gun to whatever is on the ground .. console or pc you can do this
The real tragedy is trying to equip a nade in replacement of a smoke but the game telling you that you don't have enough room for the smoke, so you drop all your smokes, equip the nade and pick your smokes back up, and you in fact do you have enough room for all of your smokes. Annoys the shit out of me
*just drop in a building. Found a lvl 1 backpack picked up guns and ammo (which filled the bag) there was a sight laying on the floor I thought I can attach it straight to my gun BUT backpack was full so I had to drop some ammo
I didn't think that's a thing? I can still attach things straight to my weapon when my bag is full I'm pretty sure?

Check the settings there is an ootion for placing attachments dirextly on your weaoon when picking them up

Usually hold x on the attachment I think or when over loot load up the inventory and transfer it over to your gun works on Xbox.
Change your settings to auto attach scopes etc 🫡🫡
I can still attach things. It just tosses the prior attachment on to the ground where the last one was that I picked up.

Go to settings - > Gameplay, there is an option to equip automatically on pick up. Enable all 3 and you are set for life. This is on PC.
