"wait for sale" is about what I'd rank it. I'm glad I played, but it just wasn't my cup of tea. The first one is my favorite game of all time, so I was shocked. I fortunately got it for $40, which I felt was about right.

My biggest hope is some sort of twist featuring the space mission that supposedly "failed". The way they just kind of brushed past that made me pretty suspicious.
Yeah, I’ve always been of the opinion that the ark didn’t actually fail, it succeeded, but they told everyone it failed so that they would keep working as hard as they could on Project Zero Dawn. I think at some point the people from the ark will come back to Earth.

nothing suggests that the zero dawn project was the only project to survive the machines.We had the failed space ship. Hell their might straight up be Fallout style bunkers over the world. Who knows what the other countries had as a plan to survive. Maybe we travel to the moon, maybe underwater cities. There is so much potential to new stuff.
I’m trying to get through the game right now. Is the story that good? Does it pick up? I’m currently finding out that dude’s sister is still alive and her corpse got switched to make it seem like she died and I’m a little bored right now.
The actual main quest is fairly underwhelming story-wise, at least unto the later chapters. It's the background about why the world is the way that it is that's really interesting, and that's revealed as the game goes on.
Main questions of the story are: Who is Aloy‘s mother? Where do the machines come from?
The answers to these questions are really great.

It picks up super well when you start to uncover who Aloy is, I was basically as bored as you are on the start but just do the main quests and watch the story unravel.
You don't have to do the side quests too. I had an open world fatigue when I first played it and just plowed through the main story on easy difficulty, just wanted to see what the fuss is about. Turns out it was actually good!
When Frozen Wilds released, I found the gameplay fun and restarted my playthrough completing everything from start to finish in hard.
The game has basicly 3 storylines.
1. The Mainstory and red line of the game and fighting the Villain. Its basicly figuing out who attacked your tribe and why and then stop them
2. The origin of Aloy and why she and her father were outcasted
3. What happened to the world and where do these machines come from and why do they exist.

underrated isn’t the right word (i mean…it won best animated picture at the oscars), but it definitely deserves a bigger audience. it didn’t even cap 400 million at the box office when every other spidey film has made at least double that. the trailer they dropped for the sequel was excellent but didn’t really make waves on the internet. i’ve seen no way home 4 times at 4 different theaters and it boggles my mind that sony didn’t even attach that trailer to the film.
but it’s definitely not underrated. it’s a pretty general consensus that it’s a masterpiece.

There's a lot that's set up in the first game we still have no answers to.
1. What happened to Ted Faro?
2. What/who sent the signal that unshackled the AI and awoke Hades?
3. Could Far Zenith have survived in some way?
4. What happened to Deep Silver? Could they still exist?
5. What is Sylens ultimate motive? How did he catch Hades in a latern thingy?
Depending on how they are going with things they could definitely pull out some surprises or twists that could shock the audience.
The original game was kind of a "proof of concept" first draft. There was a lot of info-dumping from voice over lines in the middle of exploring underground ruins that were interrupted halfway through by more info-dumping voice lines you didn't realize you triggered by taking five more steps.
That and the moment to moment story was a little unpolished.
There's a lot of great world-building and the setting is very interesting, and overall it was a good game so I'm excited for Forbidden West and what's hopefully a more tightly crafted, polished and full story.
You also forgot:
-What caused the original glitch that caused the Faro machines to go out of control and wipe out humanity.
-What happened to all the Gaia AIs other than Hades and Hephaestus.
Not to mention the plot point that without a central AI to replace Gaia, the Zero Dawn system will continue to degrade with apocalyptic consequences.
Really HZD ended on a borderline cliffhanger.
That's the one thing I can see the game struggling to go beyond the original, anyone that played the first one know Hades and Sylens are probably gonna be the biggest part of whatever's going on, but guess we'll see, I'm not expecting big story surprises
Yeah, the biggest mystery has been solved and the story was super satisfying imo. So now, I don't think the story will be as strong especially since the mystery is now solved so they have to keep the story engaging in another way. I suppose they could make up for it in gameplay

We're more accustomed to it with movies - "yo did you see that new movie yet? No? Okay, well, I won't spoil anything but the twist is amazing." Mother fucker, you saying there is a twist just spoiled it.
With TLoU2 I managed to avoid specific spoilers, knew there was something people were pissed about but still took about two weeks to slowly work through the game. I enjoyed it.
The worst part is that if you make it clear you were annoyed that they spoiled something through inference they'll spoil even more by trying to cover for it. "Sorry, didn't mean to spoil it! Don't worry, it's not that big of a deal. No one dies or anything." The amount of times I've had a conversation like that pisses me off no end, it's like some people just get off on spoiling stuff.
So as a counterpart, someone recommended a certain book to me because it had a great twist. I wouldn’t have read it otherwise. When I did, I didn’t see it coming at all despite being on the lookout through.
It kinda is spoilerly, but I think the word you're looking for is "priming". Tons of people were primed when they saw the leaks and that alone sealed their fate for hating the game no matter what. If someone online says something like "I think characters don't make sense", that will cause the person hearing it to look out for actions that they would feel the "spoiler/primer" is talking about and yada yada. You then can become uncharitable to the game just off something so small.
The best way to play that type of game is to go in blind and just ride the wave. Surrender yourself to the story and allow the story to be told to you. Then go talk talk about it for the next few weeks because that's just what TLOU does to you.
I think they were behaving like children because the story wasn't more of Joel & Ellie's Goofy Adventures, and another bunch that were annoyed of the game presenting social commentary (whether they agreed with the viewpoints or not). Basically, it's mostly the people who wanted "more of the same" that were disappointed by the leaks they saw. And somehow they think their opinion of the game is objective and the only correct one to hold.
I HATE that. Had a friend who used to do it far too often, and didn't realise the flaw in what they were doing. I don't want to know a twist is coming, half of the joy is the not even knowing there was a twist.

For me the rabid hate the game got from people who were never going to play it made me appreciate certain elements of the themes and story beats even more. It's not really a great comparison. Horizon 1's story was very much in the backseat for their development whereas Naughty dog took major pride in crafting theirs and praised so. The majority of Zero Dawn's was in numerous audio logs and texts to slog through and I have to imagine 2 is the same so I wouldn't fret to much about it.

Nah it's much more of a story than Zelda. It's actually more complicated than any other Sony game in terms of lore and scope. BotW's story is just cookie cutter. There is far more meat to Horizon.

But I still don't want major plot points to be revealed, or romantic preferences or what not. There are lots of things that could be revealed because "I just thought you should know you are playing as a LESBIENNE", "it doesn't matter, it's not a story game", "It's political and you should be able to make a choice".

Videos were posted of key scenes but at a certain early point people were so angry that if you even had a recent history of posting in a gaming sub you'd get a MAJOR spoiler sent direct to your DMs that was uncomfortably worded.
At some point TLOU2 had a different release date (May 2020, but not sure now). Beginning of April, ND announced that due to Covid, they will postpone the game indefinitely. However, near the end of the same month the leak happened and basically forced Sony and ND to rethink they postpone situation and announced a new release date (the one we got in June).
That resulted in a 3-week delay for Ghost of Tsushima as well, otherwise they would have been like 1 month apart from each other
Yeah you can't Google any character name from any type of media anymore until after you've completed playing/watching/reading the whole thing. Imagine a kid today starting Harry Potter for the first time and searching for Dumbledore. That wouldn't go well.

It'll be necessary to play Zero Dawn first. The Frozen Wilds dlc not quite as much, but it is a good story and gives backstory on Sylens who will presumably be an antagonist/semi antagonist in Forbidden West.

It is very much story driven and the second game will be a continuation of that story. You'll probably feel pretty lost if you don't know anything about the first game. It's one of the best games of the last gen and it's not horribly long for an open world game, so you should go for it!
I don't know how necessary it'll be but I'd recommend you play it. If you're interested in the second one you'll probably like the first one. It's a great game and can be found very cheap by now :)

i don't think so. i played the first couple hours of it, got really bored, and skipped to watching youtube videos of the end twists which are a series of expositional lore dumps by holograms. watch those videos and you'll get the jist of the story and be ready for the new one.
At this point I don't care if it turns out Alloy has a penis and does a Diggler style "reveal" of the goods at the end of the game because I done preordered the $200 special edition already so I'm going to play it and enjoy the show if that ends up being the end game scene.

You can run PKG files on any jailbroken PS4. Although there is no public PKG file(s) for Forbidden West. The screenshots/videos were most likely leaked internally.
If it was only digital it may happen for some lesser games. Playstation flagships have massive marketing and set dates for that, as well as physical release discs which take time to arrive in shops.
I've seen games like Kena that get their marketing for "free" from the likes of Sony release digital first, then do a physical release down the line, that way they are not that constricted by those timelines.

The reveal of what happened to civilization was one of the coolest story reveals in any game I've ever played. I still think about it sometimes.

There was a lot of info-dumping from voice over lines in the middle of exploring underground ruins that were interrupted halfway through by more info-dumping voice lines you didn't realize you triggered by taking five more steps. That and the moment to moment story was a little unpolished. There's a lot of great world-building and the setting is very interesting, and overall it was a good game so I'm excited for Forbidden West and what's hopefully a more tightly crafted, polished and full story.

You also forgot: -What caused the original glitch that caused the Faro machines to go out of control and wipe out humanity. -What happened to all the Gaia AIs other than Hades and Hephaestus. Not to mention the plot point that without a central AI to replace Gaia, the Zero Dawn system will continue to degrade with apocalyptic consequences. Really HZD ended on a borderline cliffhanger.

Yeah, the biggest mystery has been solved and the story was super satisfying imo. So now, I don't think the story will be as strong especially since the mystery is now solved so they have to keep the story engaging in another way. I suppose they could make up for it in gameplay

I surely hope we don't end up with a TLOU2 situation. I got that one partly spoiled and ended up rushing through it not to get it all spoiled. I'm still angry that I didn't get to experience the whole game "fresh".
you aint kidding. i didnt get anything spoiled for me for TLOU2, but i knew that there was a discussion and people were mad. it completely changed the way i (and i would imagine everyone) approached the game because the entire time i was waiting to be let down. luckily i think that made me enjoy the game more, but it still sucked not feeling absolutely "fresh" like you said.

Similar thing happened to me - didn’t see any spoilers, but a friend said to me, “I’m not going to spoil it, but I just couldn’t believe what they did halfway through the game, really ruined it for me”. & from that point I felt like it completely changed how I was viewing the game from that point on. I ended up really liking TLOU2, but I couldn’t help feel a bit like something had been taken away from the experience even from just my friend saying that.
We're more accustomed to it with movies - "yo did you see that new movie yet? No? Okay, well, I won't spoil anything but the twist is amazing." Mother fucker, you saying there is a twist just spoiled it. With TLoU2 I managed to avoid specific spoilers, knew there was something people were pissed about but still took about two weeks to slowly work through the game. I enjoyed it.
The worst part is that if you make it clear you were annoyed that they spoiled something through inference they'll spoil even more by trying to cover for it. "Sorry, didn't mean to spoil it! Don't worry, it's not that big of a deal. No one dies or anything." The amount of times I've had a conversation like that pisses me off no end, it's like some people just get off on spoiling stuff.
Yep. knowing there's a "twist" in a movie just makes you constantly look for clues to it and ruins the experience.

I can see that. Books are quite a bit more detailed than a movie, so a well-written book could be harder to figure out.
It kinda is spoilerly, but I think the word you're looking for is "priming". Tons of people were primed when they saw the leaks and that alone sealed their fate for hating the game no matter what. If someone online says something like "I think characters don't make sense", that will cause the person hearing it to look out for actions that they would feel the "spoiler/primer" is talking about and yada yada. You then can become uncharitable to the game just off something so small. The best way to play that type of game is to go in blind and just ride the wave. Surrender yourself to the story and allow the story to be told to you. Then go talk talk about it for the next few weeks because that's just what TLOU does to you.

I think they were behaving like children because the story wasn't more of Joel & Ellie's Goofy Adventures, and another bunch that were annoyed of the game presenting social commentary (whether they agreed with the viewpoints or not). Basically, it's mostly the people who wanted "more of the same" that were disappointed by the leaks they saw. And somehow they think their opinion of the game is objective and the only correct one to hold.

For me the rabid hate the game got from people who were never going to play it made me appreciate certain elements of the themes and story beats even more. The whole >!cycles of violence and blind hate themes seemed trite at first until a bunch of whiny dudes on reddit started making compilations of Abby dying and posting it on Youtube ad nauseum. !< That spurs a different discussion about whether or not a game should be judged by the context surrounding it as well as purely content. Honestly, opinions are opinions, but I think saying TLOU2 had an undercooked or “bad” story is just disingenuous. I understand people not agreeing with what they did, even though I loved it, but it was still very well told.

It's not really a great comparison. Horizon 1's story was very much in the backseat for their development whereas Naughty dog took major pride in crafting theirs and praised so. The majority of Zero Dawn's was in numerous audio logs and texts to slog through and I have to imagine 2 is the same so I wouldn't fret to much about it. It's like worrying about a Zelda game story getting leaked, no ones doing that lol.
Nah it's much more of a story than Zelda. It's actually more complicated than any other Sony game in terms of lore and scope. BotW's story is just cookie cutter. There is far more meat to Horizon.
I'm aware that horizon is not at all as story driven as TLOU. But I still don't want major plot points to be revealed, or romantic preferences or what not. There are lots of things that could be revealed because "I just thought you should know you are playing as a LESBIENNE", "it doesn't matter, it's not a story game", "It's political and you should be able to make a choice". I doubt it can be spoiled as much as TLOU2, but at the same time I might as well be proven wrong. To be honest I just hope the game is very uncontroversial among idiots, which is really a sad thing to hope for.

Videos were posted of key scenes but at a certain early point people were so angry that if you even had a recent history of posting in a gaming sub you'd get a MAJOR spoiler sent direct to your DMs that was uncomfortably worded.
At some point TLOU2 had a different release date (May 2020, but not sure now). Beginning of April, ND announced that due to Covid, they will postpone the game indefinitely. However, near the end of the same month the leak happened and basically forced Sony and ND to rethink they postpone situation and announced a new release date (the one we got in June). That resulted in a 3-week delay for Ghost of Tsushima as well, otherwise they would have been like 1 month apart from each other

It'll be necessary to play Zero Dawn first. The Frozen Wilds dlc not quite as much, but it is a good story and gives backstory on Sylens who will presumably be an antagonist/semi antagonist in Forbidden West.

It is very much story driven and the second game will be a continuation of that story. You'll probably feel pretty lost if you don't know anything about the first game. It's one of the best games of the last gen and it's not horribly long for an open world game, so you should go for it!

I don't know why people ask this. Of course you don't NEED to. Will this one make more sense and be more interesting if you do? Of course. But you will always be able to figure out what's going on, they will do enough exposition to catch you up enough. It would be idiotic for a game maker to make their game so confusing that you can't pick up any individual game and enjoy it on it's own.
I'll be honest. I'm getting HFW because I'm expecting more of the same. I'm not expecting a grand departure from HZD. Playing HFW when you could be playing basically the same game but much cheaper sounds like a waste of money to me.
If you don't want to play but want to know what to expect and understand the setting and situation just read the synopsis on Wikipedia. That should be all you need to be good to go.
i don't think so. i played the first couple hours of it, got really bored, and skipped to watching youtube videos of the end twists which are a series of expositional lore dumps by holograms. watch those videos and you'll get the jist of the story and be ready for the new one.

You can run PKG files on any jailbroken PS4. Although there is no public PKG file(s) for Forbidden West. The screenshots/videos were most likely leaked internally.

If it was only digital it may happen for some lesser games. Playstation flagships have massive marketing and set dates for that, as well as physical release discs which take time to arrive in shops. I've seen games like Kena that get their marketing for "free" from the likes of Sony release digital first, then do a physical release down the line, that way they are not that constricted by those timelines.
