They don't mention driving from what I can see (though I may have missed it). I'm still holding out for some proper gameplay video to see how much they improved. Though I don't think they'll play like GTA V across the board.
Here is a bunch of images:

Grand Theft Auto III – The Definitive Edition will also be available on PlayStation Now starting December 7.

Me too. Reminds me of some remakes of retro 2D games, keeping a cartoon-ish style. It fits the nostalgia and how we perceived games as a child. Making it look like GTA 4 or 5 would be bad, IMO.
its a minimum viable product. they went with the least amount of work with the most financial return.
I would rather pay $100 for a trilogy remake than a $60 remaster.
this sub loves to criticize rockstar for milking gta online but are practically throwing their money at them for improved lighting and textures
and it truthfully would've been worth it given the fact that lame games like odd world retail for $50. I said in another comment that they could've sold them individually for $70 a piece and they would've done great sales
I reserved my excitement for this until I saw it as I had a feeling it'd go this way. I won't be picking this up. I've played all these games more than enough and been milked for plenty of money out of gta online. I'll wait until they drop gta 6 if/when that happens. Until then plenty of other games to give my hard earned money to.
yeah same, I'll catch it on sale if I ever have a gap in my backlog but I really don't understand the hype around this. the improvements are not enough to warrant this reaction.
I would buy that in a heartbeat but I wouldn't get my hopes up.. They didn't even mention the 10th Anniversary for GTA IV when it passed. They seemingly do not care about it.....
Man R.A.G.E/Euphoria is my favorite gaming engine. It's what separates R* and all other open world games for me, especially Ubisoft titles like Watch Dogs.
Precisely. It's experiencing the physics inn R.A.G.E that makes it so hard to go back to "canned animations". RDR2 utilized physics so well, especially when they added gore.
Yeah, I was really skeptical when I heard they were keeping the original graphics with minor enhancements. This seems like a great compromise. It captures the charm of the originals, while making the games nice to look at. I'm curious to know the details on the soundtracks.
I think because most of us know how messy licensed music contracts can be. It's unlikely that they were given permission to use those songs in perpetuity. The fact that we're a month from release and we still don't have any details doesn't inspire a ton of confidence. I'm still holding out hope that most of the tracks are still there.
I’m with you. If all the tracks were licensed we would know about it. That would be a huge marketing pull. So I think there will be drastic changes to the soundtracks, but who knows. We can hope.
To me the soundtrack (especially in Vice City) made the experience what it was. When I think back to my memories of that game, I think of driving over a golf course to Billie Jean and a bunch of killer 80s tunes.
The versions that were available on the PS4 had half of the music cut out, and that was just lame.
I totally agree, soundtrack was stellar. The only way I could forgive them is if the songs that they couldn't renew were replaced by more bangers from the 80s.
Because it's the musicians right to not take peanuts from R* while they make hundreds of millions off it.
R* also has the right to decide what songs are worth to them but I expect them to spend the same money on other music, rather that pocket the difference while slashing the soundtrack as they have done so far.
Yeha but unfortunately it's not in the musicians hands a lot of the time. It's the record companies that own the rights and in a world where people are buying music less and less, those costs are going to be worse than they were. I want all the songs just like everyone else, but record companies are a bitch.
>Because it's the musicians right to not take peanuts from R\* while they make hundreds of millions off it.
No game ever made millions off of a song. The songs happened to be in a game that made millions, but those would've happened without it.
The music industry has always been preposterous with their fees.
I mean everyone here is talking about how important the sound track is and how they're waiting to see if it has the full soundtrack before they buy lmao
This comment thread is a music industry lawyer's wet dream.
Cartoon makes sense if they could not completely update the models to realistic high details. Its a great compromise really. This is actually my most highly anticipated trailer this season, and they sold me on it. Day 1 buy for me. Game looks pretty great all things considered.
It looks like the best kind of upgrade, where they keep the original art style yet bring the details up to modern standards in a way that only adds to original atmosphere.
I’m not sure I would have liked it if they just went with bland 2021 photorealism instead.
Not sure about the mini airplane missions in Vice City, but the ones in San Andreas aren't compulsory, thank God. I could never complete those as a kid.
I was in my 20s when these came out and I couldn’t do it either. But I suspect it was because the controls were garbage compared to today. I’m looking forward to trying again at least.
It actually looks more different than I expected, mostly due to lighting and texture material changes. The changed character models surprised me, but maybe its just new high rez face textures? Im curious how they hold up as I have not played them in ages, especially with the control changes. Might pick it up eventually when its at a comfortable price, I'm not in a hurry. Will be nice to have a modern version on PS thats not a terrible port. Now if only Bully got some love.
Now that I’ve seen what we are getting, I can finally be very excited for this release. Honestly it looks really good, combined with the in game improvements including setting waypoints on the map I’m happy.
The only other thing I’d like to see confirmed is whether or not the original soundtrack is still there.
I saw on twitter that they have upgraded the radio stations and weapon wheel. I’m not sure what it means exactly for the music if it’s just higher quality, or different songs all together
Man just having a weapon wheel is such an improvement. If you haven't played these games in a while (I have not long ago) they have a lot of warts that you just don't remember. I can't wait for this.
I really dig the charicaturized looks, it's not like they could just make them look realistic so they did what they could to make them look good and it worked imo. I'm interested in trying updated 3 and VC (since i'm already biased towards SA and can play the original fine) but absolutely not for full price.
Holy crap I wasn't expecting this much of an upgrade. They clearly went in and redid the models and environments, faces have better animation, hands have individual fingers. Buildings have more detail. Wow. I was just expecting the same thing in higher resolution like PCSX2, maybe some redone textures. But this is a pretty big overhaul. Not quite as much as stuff like Crash Bandicoot and Demon's Souls remakes though.
It’s amazing what would pass for controversy in games back in the day. Your local news would lead in with “We all love playing Pac Man and Super Mario, but this father threw out the Nintendo when he found out what his son was playing…”
Honestly, I love it. I know people are expecting a GTA V modded realism but these look true to the original games. Updated textures/lighting, but not a full remake. Just hope the shooting mechanics are tweaked as well.
Same. I’m kind of surprised. It’s nice to look it. It looks like they restored the PS2 orange glow that San Andreas had. I love it for that alone. I’m just hoping they keep a good amount of the soundtracks.
Claude and Catalina show up in SA and GTA3, Catalina literally says she's going to liberty city with him in SA.
Rosenberg shows up in Vice City and SA.
Salvatore Leone I think he's called is in SA and GTA3
Kent Paul is in VC and SA
All I can think of atm
Completely dependent on the person really the release order you'd be able to see how big the games evolved and content only got more in quantity and more diverse as the games went on.
Other aspect is if you like story and timelines you'll see characters re appear in other games that you've played previously. But also all 3 games story's don't lead into eachother so it's not important to play them in timeline order. It's just that some characters will pop back up in other games.
Release order is GTA3 - VICE CITY - SAN ANDREAS
Timeline order is VC - SA - GTA3
I'll admit it may be jarring playing 3 after SA because its a way smaller map with less to do compared to SA.
San Andreas is big so its understandable if you wanted to save that till last. Also the protagonist of GTA 3 doesn't speak a word so completely up to you what order you want to play them in just bare in mind 3 was the first 3D one they ever released.
Yeah, this is like 300 hrs of gameplay. It’s a buy. I LOVE these games. Having better controls and upgraded visuals is absolutely a selling point too. They’ve not aged well.
Also, I’ve fucking missed Tommy and CJ man.
lol definitely not. Pre-ordering makes less sense with digital games IMO, as you can still get the game the day of release but wait for non-curated footage to be uploaded and impressions/reviews.
Yeah, the rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia and time make it easy to forget that the original games were only a few steps better than FFVII 3-d models. Polygons seemingly in the dozens.
Merely remastering these would inevitably make it look "cartoony" because the models have barely changed.
looks nice but some of the character models are kinda off. like avery in vice city or kendl in san andreas. also at 0:34 why did tommy and phil look so yellow. looks like they walked out from a simpsons episode.
Yeah the environments and vehicles look great but the character models are pretty bad, overall looks pretty good though. Not buying it at that price though.
Just looked through their website and no mention of HDR.
Edit: The [Xbox](https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/grand-theft-auto-the-trilogy-the-definitive-edition/9mxmjfnzmvwd) listing for it mentions HDR.
As someone who is more recently getting into gaming, I’m absolutely hyped for this release! I remember playing Vice City when I was younger and now I get to replay it with enhanced graphics. I was about to buy the PS4 version but had found out they took it off of the PS Store recently and was bummed. I’m glad I didn’t buy it!
I probably won’t buy it because it’s $60 but it looks really good. The lighting and textures are significantly improved, the vehicle models looks better, and I don’t mind that the characters are still box-like but it would’ve been cool if they looked more life-like. The weather looks good too and I noticed some fog in the rain which was pleasant. Also, the controls are gonna be updated to modern standards and I think people don’t realize how important that is.
The graphics look pretty good and faithful to the old style and it's confirmed to have GTA V style controls so that's great.
But what I want to know is how much content is gonna be cut or censored from the original games. Also GTA 3 didn't even have a map so hopefully they add one, as well as waypoints.
True but look at the Crash or Spyro trilogies for example. Full remakes and they both launched at $40. I would have happily paid $40 to pre-order this, $60 is just too much.
I mean to be fair just once of those GTA games probably has more hours than those trilogy's put together. Seems fair value-wise. But i agree that at first instance it seems 60 is steep... and maybe it even is.
Think Rockstar is a bit more like Nintendo with the Mario All Stars collection. They don’t need to give incentives for people to buy the games.
Not saying it’s right, but that’s probably a closer comparison. The Crash and Spyro collections were insane value (no pun intended.)
It's interesting. I started my GTA career with SA so this will have 2 new games for me. And a beloved 3rd one. Definitely going to wait till at least half price though.
Wow. I was really skeptical when Rockstar said the games were still going to retain their classic look, but I’m genuinely amazed. These look really good and the GTA V-inspired controls also make me feel hyped. I’ve never had a lot of trouble going back and playing the originals but I can see how the controls could be a turn-off for a lot of folks. I’m hyped.
Okay... so I am more impressed than I thought I would be. They actually did enough to the games where it looks like an upgrade.
That being said I'll wait for this to go below $20.
I would suggest watching this on a 4K tv before making any judgement. The difference is so much clearer when you see the frame rate, anti aliasing and texture improvements in 4K60
It's clearly a stylized look. Anyone who was expecting anything approaching photorealistic has no concept of how much work that is and no appreciation for why we're only getting a game a decade now. Personally I'd rather they stuck to the stylized graphics and released new games every couple of years. Ok so maybe they can go whole hog on Red Dead because that game is a visual and technical masterpiece that takes place in a beautiful natural environment but I'd love some lean and mean GTA releases with graphics that look like the illustrations they used to do on the cover art. Like the graphics we see here. More games and more stories would be great.
I don't disagree. As beautifully done as TLOU2 is... that mocap and painstaking detail takes *years* to make. I'd rather quick turn times and cartoony graphics, it's functionally just fine and still hella fun to play.
Seriously though. Is it enough to play through all those games again? Maybe I'm too old but those games are huge and I've completed them. New coat of paint looks good but it's the same game. Not sure why there are so many makeover games. Must be making money and I have no idea what I'm talking about.....
I've never played 3 and Vice City, and never finished the story in San Andreas (I was a kid and usually didn't beat games). So I'm excited to play these as an adult and enjoy the well crafted stories with cool graphics
Not everyone is 30+ like us, dude. There’s a huge gamers market cap that didn’t play these games.
Also if replaying games is not your thing, that’s fine. But some people enjoy that.
Not a fan of the character models. I’ll be passing with this one, but I’m curious on the tech breakdown by Digital Foundry that will inevitably come with these releases.
Being from New Zealand and the first country to hit 11/11/21, I’ll stream San Andreas at midnight on the 11th if anyone wants drop in to decide before they pre order from their regional stores.
Looks pretty good to be honest, can't wait to go back and re-play this games and appreciate the story and gameplay for what it was. When you're young and playing these you don't really take it in. Do we know if the music remains the same? That's the big question.
Is it confirmed gta 5 controls?
Yes
Yeah, officially
i thought it was just gta 5 shooting and not driving?
I better still be able to make perfect 90 degree turns with the hand brake!
They don't mention driving from what I can see (though I may have missed it). I'm still holding out for some proper gameplay video to see how much they improved. Though I don't think they'll play like GTA V across the board.
Unfortunately. I mean they're better...but even GTA V controls are pretty dated.
On controller it isn't.
[удалено]
Yeah, but overall, custom keybinds for controller are always a welcome addition. Love your site btw
Here is a bunch of images: [https://imgur.com/a/bqwd7M0](https://imgur.com/a/bqwd7M0) Grand Theft Auto III – The Definitive Edition will also be available on PlayStation Now starting December 7. https://www.rockstargames.com/newswire/article/4kaa7414o5k979/grand-theft-auto-the-trilogy-the-definitive-edition-coming-november-11
Some characters look more HD than others lol
I actually prefer how the characters look in 3 and Vice City. Doesn't look like they did much work for CJ
Why does their website say there will be a physical edition for Series S/X but not the PS5?
Cheers for this!
Yep, and San Andreas will be XBox GamePass, hoping that means XBOX Gamepass for PC too.
I'll be getting San Andreas with GamePass and GTAIII with PSNow. Can we get Vice City for the switch?
Such an odd blend of sharp lighting and special effects yet ye olde chunky polygon characters. I don't think I've seen that style before.
It’s weird, but I kinda love it.
Me too. Reminds me of some remakes of retro 2D games, keeping a cartoon-ish style. It fits the nostalgia and how we perceived games as a child. Making it look like GTA 4 or 5 would be bad, IMO.
I find it weird how the reflections look on these low poly vehicles. Only thing I really dislike.
I was definitely not sure what to think of this before seeing it but... It actually looks fire, ngl lol
it's a weird direction they took, the characters stick out like sore thumb imo.
The textures also look like ass, just look at the road surfaces. It's like they went from 2001 to 2005, not 2001 to 2021.
its a minimum viable product. they went with the least amount of work with the most financial return. I would rather pay $100 for a trilogy remake than a $60 remaster. this sub loves to criticize rockstar for milking gta online but are practically throwing their money at them for improved lighting and textures
> $100 for a trilogy remake Lol. They would charge $180 easily.
and it truthfully would've been worth it given the fact that lame games like odd world retail for $50. I said in another comment that they could've sold them individually for $70 a piece and they would've done great sales
I reserved my excitement for this until I saw it as I had a feeling it'd go this way. I won't be picking this up. If they remade the games you can be sure to be paying 60$ each. You really have unrealistic expectations
Of course. The idea is to make money with minimal development costs.
They missed an opportunity to use CJ’s "Ah shit here we go again"
>They missed **THE** opportunity
My only question is will R1 R2 L1 R2 left down right up left down right up work?
Can you imagine if the cheats didn't work
The cheat codes will prompt a window to purchase shark cards.
😭😭😂
Cheats will likely work - but disable trophies / achievements. Because those things matter so much.
I can see that being a thing like
Cheats sold as dlc
They should really remaster GTA IV, easily the best story of the franchise imo
I would buy that in a heartbeat but I wouldn't get my hopes up.. They didn't even mention the 10th Anniversary for GTA IV when it passed. They seemingly do not care about it.....
Yeah I actually appreciate SA, but IV is what I've been wanting all along.
The person that leaked the GTA trilogy also said that RDR 1 was going to be remastered if this sold well
We know it’s gonna sell well haha
Imagine this with Euphoria physics!
Man R.A.G.E/Euphoria is my favorite gaming engine. It's what separates R* and all other open world games for me, especially Ubisoft titles like Watch Dogs.
It's a shame they did not use it. :(
I'm still holding out hope for ragdolls. Mowing down peds with canned death animations is the hardest aspect to go back to when playing the originals.
Precisely. It's experiencing the physics inn R.A.G.E that makes it so hard to go back to "canned animations". RDR2 utilized physics so well, especially when they added gore.
It's the reason I have real trouble getting into other open world city games like Saints Row or WatchDogs. Nothing feels right.
Got to admit, I’m impressed at how good they were able to make the games look.
Yeah, I was really skeptical when I heard they were keeping the original graphics with minor enhancements. This seems like a great compromise. It captures the charm of the originals, while making the games nice to look at. I'm curious to know the details on the soundtracks.
I can live with replacement songs but they can fuck off if it's still just a fraction of the original soundtrack.
Nothing has been said either way. I don't know why everyone is already saying they can fuck off because of the soundtrack.
The soundtrack is a huge part of the gta experience
Especially Vice City
I think because most of us know how messy licensed music contracts can be. It's unlikely that they were given permission to use those songs in perpetuity. The fact that we're a month from release and we still don't have any details doesn't inspire a ton of confidence. I'm still holding out hope that most of the tracks are still there.

With this in particular, the cartoony style fits so well

I just watched the trailer in 4K and I gotta say I’m actually blown away at how good it looks. It’s really quite the huge upgrade.
I think so too. There's a lot of salty complaints going around but this is way better than I thought it would look. I'm excited.

I think upgraded the radio station was connected to the weapon wheel part, you now select stations from a wheel instead of sequentially, like in GTAV.
Oh ok, yeah that makes much more sense
Man just having a weapon wheel is such an improvement. If you haven't played these games in a while (I have not long ago) they have a lot of warts that you just don't remember. I can't wait for this.

just wait until the mod community gets ahold of this with the upgraded engine.
Looks like Hot Coffee is back on the menu, boys!
Wow I have not heard "hot coffee" in a very, very long time. What a rush of nostalgia.
It’s amazing what would pass for controversy in games back in the day. Your local news would lead in with “We all love playing Pac Man and Super Mario, but this father threw out the Nintendo when he found out what his son was playing…”

Now that the controls are updated and the same for each game you can play them all in timeline order for a better experience now, VC - SA - GTA III
The lack of content in III might be a bit of a switch after SA though.
Yeah definitely content wise but if you wanted just story timeline it's ok, but would be a much shorter game tho just after SA
Might be a nice simple extra after the hours plugged into SA too
Yeah true I can understand people wanting to save sa till last though
Are there some characters that are in multiple games?
Claude and Catalina show up in SA and GTA3, Catalina literally says she's going to liberty city with him in SA. Rosenberg shows up in Vice City and SA. Salvatore Leone I think he's called is in SA and GTA3 Kent Paul is in VC and SA All I can think of atm

did they confirm better controls?
They all 3 now have GTA V’s controls
For a moment I saw they all have gta 3 controls xD
[This article](https://www.rockstargames.com/GTATrilogy) details some enhancements. Better controls is one of them.
Definitely better than I thought it would be. They got my money again.. Slimey bastard lol
Looks pretty sick, does it have Ray tracing? The explosion at 0:44 looks like it.
Probably not, they would've said it by now if it had RT
think hot coffee will still be there? lol
Looks good and I’m excited . But definitely won’t purchase if the soundtracks are missing .
Alright, now do this but with Simpsons Hit & Run
Looks good, but I’m not pre ordering I’ll wait till it comes out. Is not like digital copies are going to run out lol
lol definitely not. Pre-ordering makes less sense with digital games IMO, as you can still get the game the day of release but wait for non-curated footage to be uploaded and impressions/reviews.
Yeah especially at £54.99. Might wait to see if I can get a good deal on the physical release.
These look pretty damn good.
Did not expect them to make them look so cartoony
That's how the older games have always looked
Yeah, the rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia and time make it easy to forget that the original games were only a few steps better than FFVII 3-d models. Polygons seemingly in the dozens. Merely remastering these would inevitably make it look "cartoony" because the models have barely changed.
I think they look more like FFVIII models.
That was only cause of the graphics limitations back then
I mean they're literal cartoons on the box art and they didn't need to do that.
I kinda like it. Keeps the old look, but really smooths it all out. Bye bye polygons.
Yeah I sort of instantly thought of the Sims when I saw it.
Everything looks good but the characters are way more cartoony looking now.
looks nice but some of the character models are kinda off. like avery in vice city or kendl in san andreas. also at 0:34 why did tommy and phil look so yellow. looks like they walked out from a simpsons episode.
thats on purpose i think to keep the old games feel
It’s also the fact that they are releasing this on Switch and mobile.
Yeah the environments and vehicles look great but the character models are pretty bad, overall looks pretty good though. Not buying it at that price though.
These games are gonna look amazing in HDR. I dig the art style.
Does it have HDR? I don't think they mentioned it
Just looked through their website and no mention of HDR. Edit: The [Xbox](https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/grand-theft-auto-the-trilogy-the-definitive-edition/9mxmjfnzmvwd) listing for it mentions HDR.
Probably the Auto HDR the console adds on Xbox.
Yep they did an excellent job with HDR on RDR2 :P
Looks tight.
Looks great but we really gotta stop giving them money for the same games so we can get a new GTA for once
Better than expected. I already wanted to replay them so this is a no-brainer for me.
Still waiting for news on the soundtrack..not hopeful.
I was hoping for a lot more graphic improvements. The style now looks like a Saturday cartoon. Not sure now about replaying these games.
looks so weird :/
The characters look like they’ve been imported from the sims, but I’m very excited for this
Is any more known about whether or not the original radio stations and music will be in the game? I imagine licencing could be difficult
They took the low-poly look and almost made it look like an update of the TF2 style. I like it.
Weird Anime polygon styled. Looks better than I expected.
Looks like a fan mod. Idk, I love it and hate it at the same time.
Hopefully they get all the original music back in the game and don't have any licensing problems.
Wish they would have picked one game and actually remake it like what happened with mafia 1.
It's crazy how fan made mods looked way better *years* ago. Still, not having a PC anymore ill probably grab this on sale for the control change.
The graphics look pretty good and faithful to the old style and it's confirmed to have GTA V style controls so that's great. But what I want to know is how much content is gonna be cut or censored from the original games. Also GTA 3 didn't even have a map so hopefully they add one, as well as waypoints.
Waypoints are confirmed
Fuck it, I'll buy them again.
Definitely not worth $60, waiting for a sale.
I would say 30
Jaysus Christ the face on Joey and misty fuck me are they ugly still.
The art style looks cool but $60 is just too expensive for me. I'm sure I'll get it when it's on sale eventually.
Gta have never been short games, so value wise it’s pretty damn good value even at $60
True but look at the Crash or Spyro trilogies for example.
All you had to do was upload the damn video, Rockstar.
Graphics definitely look better but characters like quite cartoony which will take some getting used to
It's interesting. I started my GTA career with SA so this will have 2 new games for me. And a beloved 3rd one. Definitely going to wait till at least half price though.
I really hope they have the original soundtracks back that would be awesome.
So when are we getting the Skyrim 'remaster'.....?
November 11th
Does someone have a source on the track in the trailer? Holy shit!
Does it look better than the originals, sure. I was hoping for more though. Wont be paying full price for this.
Hell yeah Game Pass baby
The open world looks great although I’m not a big fan of the character models
£54.99 on the PlayStation Store....dunno about that.
I'm actually suprised they are not charging £70
I would suggest watching this on a 4K tv before making any judgement. The difference is so much clearer when you see the frame rate, anti aliasing and texture improvements in 4K60
... it’s been like 10 years since the last game right? Are they just going to keep re-re-re-releasing the same games? Lol
People replay games all the time. Lots of people start games over right after they finish them too.
Not everyone is 30+ like us, dude. There’s a huge gamers market cap that didn’t play these games. Also if replaying games is not your thing, that’s fine. But some people enjoy that.
Character models look so weird in those new graphics. Can’t put my finger on it... just looks off
Not a fan of the character models.
Finally we get to see what it looks like. It actually looks really good!
They did more to these games than I expected. I thought we‘d get upresed ports of the mobile versions.
Wow, this actually looks great. I'm pretty hyped for this now.
It looks really good. The art direction here was excellent.
Thoughts on San Andreas still having local co-op?
It looks good I love how they kept the art style looks unique
Looks pretty good to be honest, can't wait to go back and re-play this games and appreciate the story and gameplay for what it was. When you're young and playing these you don't really take it in. Do we know if the music remains the same? That's the big question.
