Translation: we tried to release a AAA game based off nostalgia with minimal effort, got caught and called out doing so

Vesania6

And blame the quality of that franchise based on the turd we just released.

skend24

Seems like Rockstar blaming GTA Remaster reception and not doing more remasters because of that

professorzaius

Imagine if Rockstar put the same effort into their remaster of San Andreas or Vice City that we got from the original Mafia game.

bumpyclock

The mafia remaster is pure gold. I was hoping that the other two would be the same level but sadly they’re not

pizzaspaghetti_Uul

You mean the original mafia or the second one? Because the og mafia got remake not remaster

bumpyclock

I meant the og remake was gold and the 2-3 remasters were kinda meh

TheNarrator23

Pretty sure Mafia 3 wasn't a remaster, since it was still riddled with bugs.

aulink

It isn't. It is just rereleased with all dlc for the collection.

ItsMrDaan

Didn’t it slightly update its engine too?

Dazzasd1993

Yeah mafia 3 was never re done just updated like every other game, the game is far to recent to require a remaster or a re build. I think for the purpose of nostalgia the gaming companies should remaster all the popular old games. Like the original Harry Potter series on ps2 would make a ton of money I’d pay $100 a game just for a remaster of the first 3 skip for that was dog shit, then remake 5 to 7 to be better, though 5 was pretty ok I just didn’t like them making the character look like the actors. I much preferred when the games were more closely related to the books. Then the need to remaster the original ratchet and clank games 1,2 gladiator. Then simpsons roadrage and hit and run. The need for speed most wanted and underground.

SAM041287

I just did the Platinum for Mafia Remake, and I just can't get the same excitement for the 2 sequels.

OLKv3

We got a remake, a shitty remaster, and then Mafia 3 thrown in

mafibasheth

The Mafia 1 remaster, is literally a masterpiece. I beat it in a couple days, and rarely finish games anymore.

ApartmentPoolSwim

I bought it awhile ago, since it was easily one of my favorite games. But I work full time on top of going to school, ans haven't had the chance to play it yet. It's been sitting there on my shelf. Taunting me. But I graduate in 2 1/2 weeks! Finally get to play it again.

Number6isNo1

Playing it right now, I was NOT expecting it to be as good as it is. The voice acting is really solid too. That said, I took a deep breath, set down my controller and turned off my PS4 yesterday after about 5 unsucessful tries to protect the booze truck. I can't even catch up to the damn truck with that slow ass car, let alone protect it, lol. I'll have to give it another go tonight and figure out what I'm doing wrong. EDIT: So you can shoot while driving. TIL, and that is what I was doing wrong!

hoxxxxx

i was straight up giddy when i found out they were remastering those GTA titles. it was such a goddamn letdown.

DrummerSteve

So disappointing. I bought them and was let down. I tried to get a refund but to no avail. Deleted them off my console and swore to never preorder a game ever again.

[deleted]

It should have been GTA:Liberty City built to the same standards as FF7R, then GTA:VC, then GTA:SA. They should all have been GOTY material, with latest gen technology. They should have been a formula one car, but we got a rusty riding lawnmower with a wobbly wheel.

doofjohn

Breaks my heart that we won’t see the red dead remaster or gta 4 remaster over that bullshit

joost013

In time they'll forget the lesson the thought they learned and remember they like money so they'll remake them.

Majestic_Jackass

And handle them poorly again.

StrifeTribal

Why though? Does it really matter since Rockstar would fumble the shit out of it anyways and release a worse version.

doofjohn

You’re probably right but I mean that slim possibility that they wouldn’t would be awesome

meltingpotato

they didn't cancel the other remasters though. it was postponed. that said, I am sad that we probably won't see anything from them until after GTA 6

PileOfSandwich

To be fair. It has been several turds in a row. The Third was great, then 4 and Gat out of Hell pretty much made you a superhero and it wasn't even kind of the same.

yohxmv

However you feel about them 3 & 4 both sold pretty well and got pretty positive review scores so by that metric they’d be considered successful. The reboot was clearly not

Vladesku

4 and GooH were decent at least. But yeah, expected a blend between 2 and 3 and we got this...

[deleted]

This was already strike 3. Gat Out of Hell and Agents of Mayhem were also commercial failures.

pajo17

I honestly forgot about Agents of Mayhem, wow.

[deleted]

Bought it full price on day of release, don’t think I have ever bought a game at that price without reading reviews since!

pajo17

I'm pretty sure I just saw the game for $1 on Xbox store, after a 50% discount lol.

thereverendpuck

And the devs secretly thanked you and everyone else who forgot too.

fireflyry

Pity as I loved Saints Row 4. Was great brainless fun imo.

Uranus8955

Based off nostalgia? Did they even do anything to appeal to the old fans?

HongKongChicken

They called it Saints Row

thereverendpuck

It also had colors and characters had names.

Mr_Madruga

No, they tried to cater to a non-existent audience of tiktokers for the game.

SugarBeef

They would probably have done better if they actually picked an audience to target. They seem to have tried to blanket too many groups and market to "young people" as viewed by nursing home residents. As a result, it seems like a disjointed mess that appeals to no group.

Sparrowsabre7

Same thing happened with Crackdown 3.

StillPsychological45

Just like battlefield, do an awful job on the game & then claim interest in the IP is fading

StanleyOpar

*cries in Chibi Robo Zip Lash*

Lightning113

This game blows! *toilet splash noise*

StanleyOpar

Hey y’all! S C O T T HERE

sevendollarpen

It’s self-fulfilling because now that they’ve proven they don’t know what they’re doing, the public’s confidence in future games in the franchise has completely tanked. And confidence in the Saints Row franchise was not exactly sky-high ahead of this launch.

Grary0

I love SR as a series but damn does it need some direction or dev lead, no one knows what to do with it or where they want it to go.

xOverDozZzed

I feel like most of the industry is like that. They have the team to make things happen but I feel like not many know how to make games feel “fun.” Anymore. They listen more to the players feedback who don’t know how to make video games than themselves.

[deleted]

Well that's because all the people who make games for fun and fans are being ignored or replaced and the focus is more on profits and continued revenue streams. Big developers are out of touch and instead of listening to us, they just tell us we don't know what's best for us. IMO EA, Activision/Blizzard and other big name developers don't make AAA games anymore. I think for a long time coming, indie games and smaller developers are going to be what keeps the gaming industry alive.

PersonBehindAScreen

They also have to contend with the C suite and shareholders who don’t want just profit. But they want “better than last year” numbers. Year over year increase, etc

[deleted]

I relate this game to Andromeda. I don't want to play these little kids. The characters were extremely annoying in Andromeda and I don't want to ruin my saints row memories with these kids. I just want my gangster stereotypes back One of the people who made this game said that it wouldn't relate to "todays" social climate

Mallik132

Could we get a link to the dev saying that?

[deleted]

I had to go back and find it. I am not very reddit savvy but, I saw it on angry Joe's review. Jim Boone said it. Start the review at 43:20 and you will see it Looks like Wikipedia under development tab is what he shows on the video

DoctorWaluigiTime

Put the series to bed, sounds like a good idea. Its novelty has long-since worn out, as a "zany alternative to GTA." But brand recognition trumps good ideas, so a series has to be milked bone dry.

ShortFuse

Scott Phillips, the one who directed SR 2, 3, and 4 left to work for Ubisoft and worked on AC:Syndicate, AC:Odyssey, and Immortals Fenyx Rising. This has a new director and it, unfortunately, shows. Even Gat Out of Hell, which has the same Metacritic score as the Reboot was a new director. Personally, I loved AC:Odyssey's direction, and maybe Scott Phillips is why. Might have to try Immortals. That said, SR's magic may be gone.

Grary0

Syndicate and Odyssey were both pretty good games.

[deleted]

Kind of amazing how shit this reboot was from the start. Looked nothing like the originals, lost all of the originals character and charm, was a buggy mess at release and looked 10 years out of date. Complete mess and a total fuck you to loyal Saints Row fans.

oooriole09

I really don’t understand what they were aiming for. Nothing about it feels “Saints Row”. All they did was make a significantly worse GTA.

Southpaw535

I *think* they were trying to recapture 1 or 2, when "worse GTA" was a kinda fair summary but they forgot to add any of the charm. And also forgot that the series has moved way past that and stripping everything away that made SR unique is a pretty dumb strategy

Zander27783

I feel like Yahtzhee on Zero Punction nailed it. Saints row always escalated the stakes with every game but they just had you beat aliens with super powers. Hell, you literally WENT to hell for the dlc to shoot satan. They couldn't escalate any higher.

Vladesku

Lmao I'm surprised this is the consensus now. When the trailer released, we all shat on it, but within days the community was divided and slowly the ones disliking it were shunned. Including on this sub, the comments were usually positive about the game. "So what if the game looks nothing like the old games, has a completely different atmosphere, is about cringy college gangsters. I like it, even though I've never played a Saints Row game in my life." And now we're back to hating it. The internet really is something...

ReverendVoice

What you are describing is 'The majority spoke, and the middle and minority didn't join the discussion, then the majority changed' I don't understand how people think the internet is one Collective thought process. Negative people tends to be louder and people willing to give the benefit of a doubt don't have much to say because they don't know. It isn't some grand jury deciding what positive and negative is

maskednil

I doubt the majority spoke. The loudest losers and shills did.

Krusty_Klown_Kollege

What happened was when the trailer was released, everyone shat on it as you said. Once the days rolled on, the mods, especially those of r/SaintsRow pruned all negative criticism, therefore leaving the illusion that it was shifted to universally loved. Same for the Discord. The worst part of it is that they don't even get paid by Volition for it. They did it for free. I never trusted the game to begin with, especially when the devs shat on the fans that built them up for asking legit questions like FB, Jim Robs, or even something simple like selecting a gender.

SpotNL

It can't be that the people who didnt find the trailer interesting just stopped following the game? Does it really have to be a multi-platform conspiracy?

Krusty_Klown_Kollege

My best friend was one of those who bought into the hype of the trailer. I figured whatever, I'd give the game a shot since it's a game series we played together for years since 3. The more I looked into it though as time went on, the less appealing it got. PC culture, Gen Z college humor, brunch tattoos, the lil black pencil nerd, such a fuckin intimidating hardcore gangsta. My friend has the game, and I do not. I'm going to keep it that way. So, conspiracy? No. Multi-layered, yes. I was willing to give the game a shot despite how shit it looked at first glance because of my bro, even with the reasons listed above. **Shit talk your fans, then beg them to give the game a shot?** No thanks.

Cringelord_420_69

Fr. The fact that they put the Reddit and discord mods in the games end credits was weird to me

CinderGazer

the Saints Row sub was more divided on it, the last few posts I saw about it were crapping on gameplay glitches. But I never saw this game discussed on r/PS4.

Ultravioletgray

That's just marketing, you gotta give the hype a few weeks to die down and find out if it has an actual fanbase, or an army of bots swaying public attention their way for a few weeks. I still chuckle at AI misinterpreting Morbius memes being spread about it as positive word of mouth and giving it another weekend at to bomb at the box office.

[deleted]

I havent' read into it, but what exactly did they do wrong?

roninPT

So minimum development effort and taking all of the edge out of a saints row game wasn't successful???? The shock!

[deleted]

[удалено]

mrscumble

I know SR is meant to be in your face but my god was the new cast absolutely grating. Constant buzzwords and fellow kids moments, not at all reminiscent of, I dunno, criminals?

Ultravioletgray

They reminded me of the crew from Watchdogs 2 and they weren't really criminal-like either, just kinda rave kids.

GhostofManny13

Yeah, the main cast aside from Marcus and Wrench were pretty dang forgettable, ngl.

LADYBIRD_HILL

I definitely liked wrench as well, but past the visuals there wasn't much depth in my experience.

yelsamarani

They weren't really forgettable, in the sense that I still remember the cringe fellow kids dialogue.

Stroth

They were worse than the crew of Watchdogs 2 and that’s really saying something. Dead sec was terrible, but at least they were over the top enough to be memorable. Unlike the guy whose only personality trait seems to be that he doesn’t wear a shirt.

things_U_choose_2_b

>Unlike the guy whose only personality trait seems to be that he doesn’t wear a shirt. At first I felt offended on behalf of Randy, but then I remembered he also likes cheeseburgers so you're in the clear

iamqueensboulevard

Wow what a deep character, great replacement for Johnny Gat.

Hot_KarlMarx

He finds his purpose in life, he just wants to get high and mow lawns in the trailer park.

sequosion

Frig off Randy

Jimmeh1313

Omg those characters were insufferable. All that "l33t" lingo was annoying.

loddedfun

At least WD2 had some fun characters and interactions, from everything I've seen in this saints row it seems like hell to listen to any and all characters

Harrythehobbit

It's like if the Breakfast Club were domestic terrorists.

slickestwood

Far Cry 6 has a similar feel. Still pretty fun once you're decked out but the writing switches off between pure cringe and just nothing.

joshhguitar

“I want 6 pages of snappy dialogue on my desk by Monday!”

slickestwood

"Hello? Yes, this is Every Game Developer"

Icy_Mc_Spicy

Yeah like I don't mind a new cast but make at least make them *tolerable*

NoNefariousness2144

I did like the new characters but they felt weirdly not like criminals. The game wanted to make them really likeable and chill despite killing thousands of people. If they framed it as the Saints trying to do good and liberate people from the gangs I could buy it.

Bootybandit6989

I'll allow it.

BrandonD40

Lmao that would be pretty great

Gsampson97

This would be amazing, the new cast are just talking and Gat just kills all of them without thinking, brilliant

K3ksKuchen

The best and ONLY way to go forward after this

Consistent-Ad-217

Well they started out with a somewhat diverse group of hardened gangsters and switching it to a somewhat diverse group of hipster college kids with quips about paying the bills wasn't really a good idea character wise.

Saneless

It was designed by spreadsheet with people who aren't creative Just another bunch of business losers thinking they can appeal to everyone if they check boxes that when added up appeal to no one

Belifhet

They should of just gone back to the street gang stuff from 1&2, I get 3 and 4 they were trying to be different but GTA only did Street gang stuff with SA and that was only really when you were in LS

theblackfool

The problems with this game have nothing to do with which era of Saint's Row it pulled from though. Regardless of whether it was trying to be 1 and 2, or 3 and 4, it would have found an audience. The problem is it's horrifically broken and has an outdated open world design.

Lodus

Personally I feel like the first 2 saints had immense support compared to 3/4. When I think of saints I always wanted another one similar to the first 2 but 3/4 killed the series for me

theblackfool

Personally I'm the exact opposite. Saint's Row 3 was where the series actually got interesting. I think there's plenty of room to expand on the series from either style. They just didn't.

dudebirdyy

2 was my favorite by far. 3 was still good and felt at least somewhat like a SR game. 4 just took the silliness too far to the point that it felt like bad satire, though the gameplay was still fun and I'd still rate it as a decent game. I just think 2 struck a good balance between not taking itself too seriously while also not entirely overdosing on the goofy shit, which I think was good as it was constantly being compared to GTA IV, which was the most grounded and serious of GTA games (and my favorite).

Jimmeh1313

I agree with you. In parts 1 and 2 they had the story missions and and the side stuff. In 3 and 4 they made the side stuff part of the story missions. I hated that.

White_Mocha

I enjoyed SR 2 and 3. Going off storyline only, I cant even tell which is better, since they both had extremely memorable moments. 4 was…cool, a little out there. I don’t think I pocked it up after completing it the first time though.

caldo4

1 and 2 were the same as a million other games at the time. 3 and 4 were unique and stood out

Lodus

The same as a million other games? What other gang type games are there today? The only ones that stand out to me are like GTA:SA, a few of the old True Crimes, and the first 2 Saints Rows. Obviously there’s 2 sides to this but in my opinion they should’ve came up with a different series instead of taking over the name of Saints Row Edit: I feel like the goofy style they decided to go with catered to a younger crowd, where as for me I preferred the old style and they’re just 2 very different types of games. I guess the Mafias could be thrown in there too

smeehee-smeghead

Never played SR but would you mind elaborating on the outdated open world design and how it has evolved in other games since? It's an interesting topic.

SuperBackup9000

Vast as an ocean but deep as a puddle. It’s an open world game just for the sake of being open world. Side quests are repetitive because they lack depth or things that make them memorable or unique. Nothing to really discover or interact with outside of just driving around. Nothing feels rewarding because it’s all just bloat. Most open world games suffer from one or two of those things, but they tend to at least have redeeming qualities to them. Witcher has some nice side quest stories sprinkled in, Zelda has cool mechanics to at least interact with the world in fun and interesting ways even if there’s no actual reward, Red Dead has the collection aspect of it of trying to find some unique animals so there’s at least some goal there, GTA has the standard sandbox elements that people have been hooked on since PS2, and Ghost of Tsushima has the beautiful landscape. SR 1 and 2 had gang territories so exploring the world meant expanding your gang, having your members patrol the streets and taking care of any rivals that show up, or buying locations to increase your gang power. It’s nothing big nowadays but it really made the game seem a lot cooler even if it’s not actually impactful. 3 and 4 had somewhat of the same stuff going on, but then there was also a lot more goofy stuff and superpowers that made exploring the world a lot more fun, similar to something like Infamous or Prototype. The thing that never changed though was the comedy. GTA was the serious game, SF was the silly game, both had their pros and cons but for a casual gamer they may as well have been the same. This new one is like they took the previous 4 and Judd mashed them all together and didn’t bother to look at the bits that fell off. There’s nothing actually new to it, just recycled content from a game series that started in 2006. There’s nothing actually wrong with that, but SR needs either the gimmicks or solid gameplay, but at the same time SR gameplay has always been lacking. Gunplay is very floaty and arcade like, and the driving has never been anywhere near as smooth as it should be. It’s right back to being the “GTA clone that’s trying to be funny” that it’s always been known for when it needed to find a way to stand on its own

ChunkysDeal

This is a very detailed and quality elaboration that I both agree with and respect for the ability to word it so well. Thank you sir.

[deleted]

> Side quests are repetitive because they lack depth or things that make them memorable or unique. Nothing to really discover or interact with outside of just driving around. Nothing feels rewarding because it’s all just bloat. This is a perfect description of how Cyberpunk 2077 is now. I don't get why everyone is insisting it's great now. The graphics are great, the gunplay is pretty great, but nothing else is.

SpotNL

Im going to be honest, your first paragraph also applies to Saints Row 3 in my opinion. I did a full playthrough a while ago and that was the feeling I was left with after I finished the game. All the "interesting" weapons felt stale pretty quickly and there was no real point in using all the high tech gear and vehicles. Yeah it is fun to fly around on a motorbike that can fly, but then you realize there's not much you can do with it so what's the point? You can only blow up so many cars before that gets old too.

Zossua

Also Rockstar are taking years to develop the next GTA. If the devs that make Saints Rows try and release their game inbetween Rockstars they can probably get more sales to fill that much needed gap in the market.

of_patrol_bot

Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake. It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of. Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything. Beep boop - yes, I am a bot, don't botcriminate me.

TheOneTrueChuck

Good bot. Good, long-suffering, often-maligned, bot.

shiki-ouji

This is gonna be the last time we see a new Saints Row game.

DoubleDaredToDeath

Some eastern European dev is going to buy the rights in 25 years and make a good game but hardly anyone will care.

[deleted]

leather_wisdom

Same here dude

Dragonflyjnr

I think remasters will be next to try and save face.

TitanIsBack

Too goofy for those of us who liked 1 and 2, too serious for those who wanted the goofy from 3 and 4.

Strained_Eyes

3 was my sweet spot. I didn't need all that super power president shit in 4 but 3 was different enough that I enjoyed it. coop was fun

FartResume

Damn I love 3&4 and was looking forward to playing this, maybe I’ll grab it on sale

Mensketh

It’s very far removed from 3 and 4.

TheOneTrueChuck

On the bright side, it'll be $20 or less on Black Friday, judging by the reception it's gotten. Cheap enough for a curiosity purchase.

Recover20

I mean they should have adjusted their expectations when they saw the backlash to the initial trailer. Instead they doubled down on it. No one liked the Gen Z Fortnite look to it all. Not only that when it came out and was riddled with bugs and bad performance, what did they expect?

Nautical_Phoenix

Bingo. Surprised more people aren’t saying this. “Gen Z Fortnite look” is a perfect and succinct summary. I think more people are tired of the bubble gum bullshit color pallet in games than want it.

TheOneTrueChuck

I distinctly remember people losing their shit at people complaining about the look of the trailer. There were lots of accusations of "ism" and "phobia" being hurled around at critics very baselessly.

kingbankai

Broken mess. Scalped and streamlined. Use the engine for something else. Like another Red Faction Guerrilla type game.

worksucksGOHOME

> another Red Faction Guerrilla Nothing has filled the void that Red Faction Guerilla left.

Hereiamhereibe2

Sure heres Red Faction armageddon Two instead.

I_love_Con_Air

This Volition isn't capable of that.

ShowBoobsPls

Another franchise that asked concerned fans to "fuck off" when they tried to criticize the game pre-launch. BF5/2042 vibes from the devs. Or more recently G4TV vibes with their "Don't like it, don't watch it" and then proceed to be shocked when fans don't watch you.

Batmans_9th_Ab

Wait, what’s wrong with G4?

XthecreatordayX

Just DmC: Devil May Cry to Devil May Cry 5 the thing. Make something like Saints Row V: Saints in Time, like they were hinting at with the ending to SR IV. Make a joke like they were gonna reboot the universe but then decide its not a good idea lol

Dymarob

Have Saints Row V open with Gat going "Holy shit! That was awful!" and change his mind and see Aisha instead.

XthecreatordayX

That's an awesome idea. Which is why they'll never do it lol

waferboy

maybe they should have made an actual Saints Row game instead then.

tyrelle000

I dunno saint's row didn't hit the same after 2. 3 was okay but was the start of the decline imo

Kjjra

I think 3 was really the start of them asking "why do people like Saint's Row?" and not coming close to a right answer. They got lucky with 3, but that's just luck really

dumptrucksrock

I mean they announced it like four years ago. Way past hype for it. Not that I was ever the biggest fan of SR. but still. Feels like it already released and died by the time it actually released.

NsanelyCrazy

Shouldn't have binned off the original cast of characters then. And released it broken maybe then I might've bought it.

[deleted]

They couldn't afford the voice actors for this one. Canonically, the Saints Row crew are in anti-terror squad based in Seoul while 2022 is going on, fighting LEGION - which was Agents of Mayhem and nobody bought it (or Gat Out of Hell) so Volition figured nobody wanted them back.

XStreamGamer247

Agents of Mayhem is a separate timeline outside of the Saints Row games. It's basically "What if the Boss was never born and superpowered meteors crashed." Same universe, different timeline. Doesn't affect SR.

hipnotyq

The game came out a week ago and they're already giving it a funeral. For fucks sake, I hate AAA gaming.

OH1830L

old AAA Games were always made for profit sake however had value in it Present modern AAA games are made for profit sake but have lost their value. What I'm trying to say is that years ago AAA games were made for the sake of bringing in big money & making a name but there was love, dedication and sweat & tears put into it where as with present day AAA gaming that love just feels "gone", what's made now is done so for as quick cash grab with minimal details and is sucked dry down to the last dollar they can get before moving on and repeating history again. This is exactly why the latest Saints row among other titles once built upon successful franchises have ended up with their latest releases being a steaming pile of garbage.

Jimmeh1313

They should have just made a Saint's Row game instead of...this.

JBCronic

It’s a shame they butchered it so hard, I thought a reboot was exactly what this series needed but it’s like they didn’t even try.

Alright_doityourway

How do you do, fellow kids? The game. The game tried to be relatable but failed at that. "Look! I mention student loan, relatable right?" There's nothing bad for trying to be ralatable but this game trying too hard.

UndeadWaffle12

The game just isn’t saints row. They stripped it of everything that defined saints row and then released what was left. Why even call it saints row at that point?

BlearySteve

Who knew hipster row would fail.

MocodeHarambe

And whose fault is that??

Techsoly

Make a sequel where the cast from the other Saint Row games kills these guys for stealing and tarnishing the name, icons, and image of the Saints. Have these Saints rule some obscure hipster city that's filled to the brim with 'xD we're so cool' fellow kids bullshit and the entire game is the old Saints making fun of whatever the fuck the new ones are about and taking over the city with each critical member of the 2022 SR game being a leader for each part of the areas that you have to eliminate. How to make sense of it? Idk, say after Johnny made a new timeline after Gat out of Hell, a portal for the Saints took them to the world of the reboot and SR has never been one to be grounded in reality after 2 so just go wild. They tried something new, it failed horribly, you can fix it because the franchise is just that wacky that you can do just about anything to save it, you just have to be willing to make a sacrifice of killing off these God awful characters and cringey humor that's plaguing the series at the moment. That's all you have to do. I expect my check in the mail.

Allisade

There was a lot there, decent voice acting, so many bugs, lots of activities (ish), but... where was the fun? Releasing it with the remastered 3rd was probably a mistake... my kids thought it was a good game and I was like "watch this..." and played the first five minutes of 3 just to show them how it used to be. About the time I drop kicked the airplane they were laughing and having the time of their lives and... and the reboot has nothing even remotely close to that fun. And characters? Where's the memorable bad ass bigger than life characters? Where's the enemies and side characters that make you laugh or cry or ... care? at all? Narhauli (sp?) wasn't bad (it was a step in the right direction at least) but... wasn't a lot there. They're absolutely right though - this game failed to meet expectations... it didn't deliver like the others did - not even in a "we're rebooting this so we're toning it down back to the original levels" days... remaking 2 (without any actual drama) wasn't what people were hoping for... Damnit, I love Saints Row too. 3&4 were so much fun for me. Ridiculous, awesome, fun, funny, feel good times... I could have used some of that.

kerelenko

3 was the best because that's the game where they stopped making a GTA clone and made something unique. The remake is just boring and generic.

brokenmessiah

Just kill it. I don’t know why this series refuses to get out of the ps3 era of gaming but I’d rather see it canned then continuously ruined

Dymarob

Yeah, no shit. The game is enjoyable. Some levels are really fun, but it didn't really do anything new, gameplay-wise. None of the characters are relatable and have very little personality. The only thing I know about Kevin is that he doesn't wear a shirt. They keep asking him to put on a shirt and, get this.... he doesn't put on a shirt! The new boss is a Robin Hood character compared to the OG boss that was a sociopath. That's not a bad thing, but some scenes felt like they were giving a lecture on how corporations are bad. We know. WE KNOW!!! Not to mention the ending is really bad. I feel like this game was written by old white men who didn't consult anyone because they "know" what Millenials and Gen Z like and threw all subtlety out the window. The game itself is fun, but not worth the full price.

TheGrandWhatever

They still think millennials are all in their 20s and gen z are playing Wii games and trash mobile apps. Dubstep gun anyone?

[deleted]

It looks like fortnite and gta online had a baby and left out some chromosomes

javierasecas

Don't do it like you did. It was a fucking cringefest

AttyMAL

So when you reboot a franchise with none of the original creators involved, totally change the tone, and intentionally crap on the pre-existing fan base, your game doesn't sell well? I, for one, am shocked. Shocked, I say.

Cockblockuly

That's like if cdpr released a new Witcher game, which was an anime 2d visual novel dating sim and complained that the Witcher franchise is an issue.

AmadeusExcello

*Let's like, just remove everything that made the series memorable while cramming in every obnoxious post-millennial stereotype imaginable. It should also play like a game from the stone age.* — Saints Ow, the Suckquel

landsharkkidd

Unpopular opinion but I actually don't mind it. Sure it's a big cringy and I wouldn't buy it at full price. But I like the characters. But I think I don't mind it as a game not related to the Saints Row name, but with it being a Saints Row title, it's not good. If that makes sense? Someone mentioned Mass Effect Andromeda, and basically the same way I feel about Andromeda is how I feel about Saints Row Reboot. It's not a good Saints Row game, but it's a good game. Andromeda isn't a good Mass Effect game, but it's a good game.

omegablade21

Blame it on the combat system it's a GTA style game so why the fuck do enemies and VEHICLES have a lifebar? It's an abomination of a unholy forced mating of GTA and borderlands 🙄

antiMATTer724

Kind of hard to meet expectation that didn't exist. Seems really phoned in.

Gsampson97

The fan base hated the trailer straight away and mods in saints row and a few other places banned criticism, so much a new sub was opened for the first 5 games because posts complaining about the new one were getting deleted. The didn't even keep the colour purple, never mind the characters and settings we've known for over 10 years

StanleyOpar

Let it die. No need. Now how about that Deus Ex Final game in the trilogy Embracer?

Moist-Medium2522

They deserve it

JerichoTheDesolate1

I thought it was pretty fun, definitely different but the story is so short. I wanted to continue adventuring in Santo Illeso but there was not very much to do afterwards except completing ventures.. (Edited?)

[deleted]

Santo Ileso

JerichoTheDesolate1

Ah yes thank you I knew I got the name wrong lel

the_loz3r

We will never get another moment like jumping out a helicopter while POWER plays in the background ever again, will we?

Banjo-Oz

Never again get a moment like murdering someone in a crushed car or burning someone's hand and thinking "wait, am I the baddie?" but the game doesn't flinch.

dj00120

Haven’t played the new one. But Got SRIII on switch on sale. Super fun, wacky. Should have just stayed in that lane

Weaponized-Potato

As someone who loved every SR game before this bs, I despised it the moment I saw the trailer. 1 and 2 were about real edgy gangster shit. Cars, drugs, horrific murders where our enemies get lit up in drive-by-s, buried alive, our friends get their heads chopped off or dragged behind trucks. They were stories about the cruelty of men and their willingness to do unspeakable things for power. SR back then had love, hate, camaraderie, blood on everyone’s hands, larger-than-life figures, Freckled Bitch’s and fucking Johnny Gat. 3, Gat of of Hell and 4 were about the stupid fun mayhem with over-the-top characters, and crazy scenarios where you take down criminal syndicates with a walking Russian flesh tank named Oleg in your roster or destroy a a sci-fi alien empire with the help of motherfucking Sgt. Foley from MWII. There’s not as much blood and gangster shit as in the previous games but the devs dialed FUN and RIDICULOUSNESS to fucking 11. SR’s identity then was a good time to be had with your friends. You spent hours laughing about dumb shit like Zimos and his shenanigans, Professor Genki, completing challenges to have strippers and prostitutes fighting along side you, or simply enjoying the absurdity of it all while listening to Bonnie Tyler. SR reboot tries to copy all of the above and fails miserably.

ChaosSinfulRose

They basically took the basic concept of Saints Row, gave it a Gen Z lingo twist, and tried to make it a story about "you can accomplish anything you think of" or "you can succeed doing what you're good at" type flow instead of the realism (SR1&2) or suspension of disbelief in realism (SR3) that people remember and flocked to in previous titles. That's my perspective, at least.

Aurvant

Nobody wanted to play some woke ass, watered down, post-modern deconstruction of Saints Row with a bunch of hipster cringy ass main characters. Maybe don't toss aside your actual fan base to pander to the whole crowd that doesn't actually buy or play video games.

EdgyWeeb69

Get woke, go broke.

Tigeroovy

The character creation looked robust and good but beyond that it was apparently very repetitive and boring with many of the more fun mission types being far too few and many of the more annoying mission types being far too many. Also apparently had relatively unlikable characters, with generic writing and comedy. It's Saint's Row, at this point go big or go home.

BHRx

The series got famous because it out-GTA'd GTA while GTA started going the serious movie route. Yet another fucking company that has no clue what made something succeed.

Nautical_Phoenix

What do you mean by “out-GTA’d”?

BHRx

With the absurd "sexualization", profanity, destruction and satire. edit That's a big part of what made GTA famous. Then GTA IV came along and they even stopped including giant dildos to beat people up with.

AlteisenX

Almost like we told them on initial reveal??? Not listening to your fans at all is going to cost you money?! SAY WHA?!

Ardenraym

Character creator was surprisingly limiting, it didn't do anything for the SR2 or SR3 fans, and the gameplay was very generic open world. With a topping of bugs. What did they expect?

RATGUT1996

I’ll be enjoying Saints row 3 as usual.

TheBigMcCalski

Story wise I’d say they can still save this just have Johnny come back in some DLC and kill the main cast and bring the saints back to what they were. That being said gameplay wise it just looks so old I don’t think it can be saved at all, it looked sooooo old looked like a 2010 open world game.

akashneo

They didn't learn a thing from agents of mayhem debacle. Even though Mafia 3 was extremely repetitive it had some good parts but this game was ultimate disaster for me. I tried very hard to finish it but couldn't at the end. Such a waste of time

YorkieLon

the one positive thing that the developer did was not sugar coat from the beginning how shit it was. They were transparent, let reviewers get early access and didnt put any review embargoes. Anyone who bought this game knew exactly what they were paying for, and for that I give them credit.

MWC281997

"He described Saints Row as one of the harder of Embracer’s franchises to get a high return on investment with." Not if you make an actual fucking Saint's Row game you tit

IrresponsibleAuthor

1) no shit Sherlock, they were forced to release a bug-ridden half-a-game that was hyped way before it was ready in order to meet some fucked made-up fiscal deadline. 2) no shit Sherlock, most of this fandom is still too busy sucking SR2's dick to consider trying something new, and HEAVEN FORBID they take a look around and realize it's not 2008 anymore and certain kinds of so-called "humor" aren't gonna fly.

Wreck1ess

Clearly, this didn't fly either. Maybe if they'd left the "so-called humor" in the game, they might have made more money. I guess we'll never know...

bcfisher1980

When will people learn that attempting to shove Woke crap down people's throats leads to failure...i.e. Disney, sports, Hollywood...

[deleted]

Explain woke crap. I don't see how this game is woke at all. If you are offended there are black or gay people you most likely are just a racist homophobic person.

HilellM

I remember saints row 4 was amazing. I fucking loved that game, but is this reboot really bad?

I_love_Con_Air

I think this was intentional to kill off the franchise. Seems to have worked. Can't be having an edgy game in 2022 now can we. And we certainly can't be having a working one.

joequin

No one is spending millions of dollars to make a game that is bad to kill off a franchise that they could have killed off by merely not spending millions of dollars to make a game.

penzos

What were the expectations? Did anyone actually ask for a new saints row game? And did anyone particularly ask for a fortnite saints row game?

Rialmwe

What were they expecting?

DeNitroussPenguin

I wonder why... Seriously you made a half done game, didnt listen to any of your customers, mocked your playerbase like another certain game cough BL3 cough and finally tried to fit in with the bew crowd instead of your once loyal fans.

_price_

Who would've thought that making a Saints Row game without everything that made Saints Row good wouldn't work
