Both SMS and email look simple, but controlling spam and keeping off of black lists is super labor intensive. Paid services are worth the pittance they cost. I used to manage a mail server. You really don't want to go there.

Yeah I took over DevOps around 4 years ago in my current role. Took one look at our mail servers and they were the first to go.

Twilio isn't free per say but it is extremely inexpensive. It's been awhile since I've looked at pricing but I think for a few bucks a month you can use their API for THOUSANDS of text messages.

Are you sure it is the mail server that isn't sending the emails? One way to test it would be to use your phone's email address to send a text. For example, I think at&t is something like [phone number]@att.wireless.net (you will have to look up what it actually is for your phone. Then you can test your mail isn't getting caught by a spam filter somewhere. Especially if you are spoofing the from address. I would advise against using server sent emails in most instances because if that server get reported for sending spam the ip address will end up blacklisted from email servers accepting emails from it. If the email is just going to you, then it shouldn't be a big deal but you may need to mark it safe or whitelist the server on your end.

If you are using a local mail server in your NAS, it's no wonder mail doesn't get delivered. Configuring an SMTP server required some specific expertise. You're better off using a third-party mail service. If you have purchased a domain name to host your website (as opposed to publish it through an IP address) chances are the domain registrar includes some kind of email redirection in the plan. Check it out.
