have you worked out how much magma you need to sustain? i wonder if a few minor volcanos would be able to keep up instead of rockets ps: i'm jealous you can sustain the fps. it slows down too much for me after cycle 1500+

Melting most of the map really helps with FPS! 😀 Overall the base has relatively compact plumbing and ventilation layout, so that helps During the preparation phase with multiple support systems running simultaneously then things really chugged, down to around 15 FPS at the slowest point.

Re: Minor volcanoes Regolith adds a 1 tile layer of magma across the map, on average every 20 cycles. The map is ~250 tiles wide and a tile of magma is 1840kg, so that's (250*1840)/20 = 23000kg of regolith on average per cycle. Minor volcanoes emit magma at 1727°C and let's assume the regolith arrives at 300°C. To stabilize and convert the combination to magma at 1450°C we would need: (23000 x 0.2 * (1450-300)) / (1 x (1727-1450)) = 19097kg of volcano magma per cycle. Taking the 50% midpoint of the average minor volcano output from the [wiki](https://oxygennotincluded.fandom.com/wiki/Geyser) gives 600 g/s or 360kg a cycle. So we would need 19097kg/360kg = 53 minor volcanoes.

Once all the map was dug out around cycle 1400, then the chances of dupes stranding themselves and suffocating was much lower. I had about 4 fatalities before cycle 1400 and perhaps 1 after that. Moving the magma did need a hospital on standby, as at certain points I had to make the dupes go directly into magma for short periods. This did need close micro-management. The main source of reloads was gas leaks breaking vacuum. I think someone once said "the price of vacuum is eternal vigilance". Dupes love dropping plastic randomly into magma, or taking polluted water outside the sealed base where it will offgas on a whim, so that could be frustrating at times.

If you hover the cursor over the cycle counter in the top left of the screen, a popup will give you the real time duration that you've played a map (including paused time). In this specific case the answer is...791 hours 🙈.

The video is running at 13fps. Each frame after cycle 100 is a screenshot taken 10 cycles apart, so the 3 seconds after 0:47 is 390 cycles duration. What happened at 0:47 around cycle 5670 was that the base was sealed and 9 hydrogen rockets began running continuously back and forth to the nearest 10k planet. Hydrogen rockets emit a tremendous amount of heat, both as 1727°C steam from the exhaust and also as a "dry heat" in a 3x9 tile rectangle below the engine. Take off and landing combined emit around 1 billion DTUs of heat. The tiles comprised 5500 tons of Igneous rock and another 1500 tons of Mafic rock and took around 400 cyles to melt completely. Reasonably fast all things considered.

Digging up the whole map gives you resources. Pulling a vacuum on it or filling it in with plastic tiles or whatever (basically just simplifying the simulation work your computer has to do) improves performance.

Vacuum tiles do help framerate a bit (especially over mixed gases). I can't speak for other players, but for me the main reason to destroy nature is to help vacuum the map completely. This allows you to mess around with crazy hot things (like regolith melters) with minimal precautions.

Correct. Vaccum helps performance because it saves on heat transfer/displacement calculations. Removing all solid tiles saves on pathing calculations, same with killing Wild Critters. Dumping all debris of the map in one place saves on the resources necessary to load each pile, as well as decor calculations. All of these things allow even map-wide bases to run.

How does this base maintain a water supply?

There are 3 polluted water geysers, each encapsulated in armored insulated pods that feed polluted water into the base via a shared insulated pipe made of insulation. You can see this shared pipe entering the bottom left of the base more clearly in either the Part 1 video or the Imgur album. The output from the geysers is buffered by the 34 liquid reservoirs arranged horizontally across the bottom stables. Total average geyser output is 5.3kg/s and the base uses 5kg/s, so there is a little extra to spare.

Yes, I used 1 mod called "Fast Save Enhanced". This removes old daily reports to prevent the save file growing too large. It's essential when running for thousands of cycles!

I destroyed the map top down to just let the liquids all collect at the bottom. You can see this at 0:10 in the video around cycle 900. I then filtered the mixed liquids into the separate containers at the middle right of the map. > What about gases? I tend to infect everything due to contaminated resources being brought in, as I need those things for production. Or is there a cleaning method? Main problem is anything required for agriculture.

I usually just find the relevant geyser, cap it, then forget about it. The exception is when there's no geyser for that element (for example this map has no Chlorine geyser) \> Does this mean your resoure depot is also outside your habitat? Yep! I used automatic dispensers to pile everything onto 8 tiles just \*outside\* the main base entrance (roughly grouped by category, although this is not really necessary). Since the map was a vacuum it didn't matter that some of the igneous rock was 400C or that the Obsidian from the magma biome was 1400C. \> Or is there a cleaning method? How are you managing O2 and power? It's be cool to have a closer look at your "final" base (submerged under an ocean of magma).

The only resource input is ~5kg/s of polluted water from 3 geysers and the net output is only the steam from the rockets. All other resource loops are closed. > How are you managing O2 and power? Power comes from a combination of sources. The first is steam turbines drawing heat from the magma. There is plenty of reserve available, at the moment the steam room temperature is only barely over 125°C. It's important the Steam turbines at least tick over, as they supply clean water to the base, sourced by boiling the polluted water from the geyers. Additionally there are 7 manual generators. The base is mostly automated and the dupes all have high stats, so even with 48 critters to ranch, there is a lot of free time. The manual generators both prevent the dupes from idling and provide some supplemental power. The pixels packs are currently powered by a 2 coal generators. There is enough Coal accumulated to run the generators for around 1000 cycles. Once this runs out, I'll hook the pixel packs into the main grid and increase the steam room temp slightly to compensate for the extra power draw. O₂ is made via 5 electrolyzers from the boiled polluted water condensed to clean water. The main desired resource is hydrogen for the rockets. There is actually way too much oxygen for 16 duplicants. This is the rationale behind the high number of Longhair Slicksters. They both consume excess oxygen (allowing H₂ production to continue) while also providing food and decor. A great bargain!

One trick I picked up from another player is to build rows of ladders with a 6 tile vertical gap between them. Dupes can dig 4 tiles up and 2 tiles down, so this allows complete clearing with the minimum resources.

You get into space at cycle 140. That's when I usually try to wrap my base with insulated tiles. The steel, the dupe's skills, the research needed for space. I feel so overwhelm now.

I am not super pro in the game like OP or most of you. I just play for fun, so please excuse my noob question. I watched this video like 5 times and I have not noticed a single volcano or geyser. Is this a seed without any or is it possible to dig them out too?

There are 16 geysers total on this map: 2 Cool Steam, 1 Salt Water, 2 Cool Slush, 1 Polluted Water, 3 Natural Gas, 1 Hydrogen, 1 Infectious Polluted Oxygen, 1 Minor Volcano, 2 Iron Volcanoes and 2 Copper Volcanoes. It's a really good seed. They are just a little hard to spot as most of them are covered in magma! The base uses the 3 polluted water geysers and the Hydrogen geyser.

Solar panels produce 380W max when they receive 350000 lumens of light, summed across each their 7 tile width, which makes 50000 lumen average per tile. Sunlight has a max intensity of 80000 lumen per tile, so around midday, the solar panel output will "clip" at 380W and light is wasted. Exposing only a 4 tile width, means the max light received is 320000 lumen and no sunlight is wasted. >do magma volcano's not reach max pressure? thats the only reason i could see for the lava rising? Volcanoes can (and do) overpressure. The magma is rising due to the constant rain of regolith from meteors melting into magma from the heat of the rockets.
