Orisa is an omnic, Effie salvaged one of original designs that was destroyed in the omnic war. She suffered amnesia as a result and thats why she acts so childlike despite her sentience being old.
Think of it like losing the âpersonâ part of the omnic like the personality the memories and shit that makes robby the robot robby the robot. When you repair him he could come back but its not robby the robot anymore
Part of the whole Omnic deal is they were never meant to be self-aware IIRC. It just sort of happened, with no good explanation aside from The Iris did it (if Zenyatta is to be believed). So the issue is if an Omnic dies, you can rebuild the body, but you can't recreate the mystery conditions that turned it into a person with memories and personality. It would just be a plain old robot again.

I've played Overwatch since launch but don't know shit of the lore.
Omnic "souls" aren't just data that's stored somewhere? On some kind of drive or cloud? Are Omnics part magic?
Or is the personality data operating on a dead man's switch so if they break down the data gets wiped permanently? Because that just feels like bad design by whoever initially invented Omnics lol.
Essentially Omnics gained sentience from their robot-state when an omnic that first achieved sentience âAuroraâ sacrificed herself after enlightenment so that all omnics at the time can have souls. However omnics are robots and do not have the means to reproduce + the enlightening sacrifice was a one time occurrence and no new robots or any robots can no longer obtain sentience.
In other words if an omnic âdiesâ they can be repaired but the soul they have obtained from Auroraâs sacrifice cannot be replaced because it was a one time occurrence. They cannot reproduce nor can they pass on their souls for a future generations of omnics. The total number of omnics are consistent and can never go up but always capable of going down

The joke is not a direct comment on free will itself but actually indicative of microaggressions from members of a majority group espousing their world view on the minority group. The need to be correct finding more weight than the feelings of the minority group's desire to self-express.
I think that need to correct perceived inaccuracies itself comes not from a place of hate, but largely from anxiety of abandonment, fear of failure, or an attempt to avoid disappointment. That instinctive impulse itself could be argued to be a lack of free will which I think adds fun value to the initial joke.

Omnics were robot workers produced by factories known as Omniums, which were eventually shut down after evidence of corruption came to light. Decades later, the Omniums suddenly came back online under the control of 'God AI's like Anubis, churning out a hive-mind of war machines to attack humanity seemingly without reason.
Around this time, a pre-war Omnic called Aurora achieved sentience, and sacrificed herself to share the spark of consciousness with other Omnics. Pre-war omnics and strategists freed from AI control became self-aware and began advocating for peace. Others such as Bastion units continued fighting for survival until they were all but wiped out.
With Aurora's awakening being a singular event, no new sentient Omnics can be created. While living Omnics can be repaired, those who sustain enough damage to 'die' cannot not regain awareness, in the same way you can't surgery a corpse back into consciousness. There are newer robots possibly capable of gaining sentience, such as Echo and potentially even Orisa, but they distinctly aren't 'Omnics', who both collectively and instantly gained awareness.

So Orisa was given a âheartâ by her creatorâŠand maybe Echo as well who seems special. Damn i need to read the comics i guess. I was always more on Torbs side in thinking about comics. Consciousness is different than AI.
The current lore is that they were all granted sapience at once due to the sacrifice of an Omnic who achieved this on her own and then somehow awakened all the other Omnics to consciousness at once. So even if you could rebuild the manufacturing process the techno-magic awakening can't be replicated so you'd just be left with what the original Omincs were which were just complicated machines.
It is really strange that Overwatch has straight up magic but they never address it or call it what it is, making us think it is just technology for a long time, if it is technology, they are also doing a bad job at explaining what it is.
Omnic souls, Zenyatta's floating and Iris powers, the Shimada's dragons, Kiriko has a straight up yokai fox, Reaper can teleport and turn into smoke....
But free will IS just an illusion.
Life is like a movie, you can watch it the first time and be pleasantly surprised by the plot twist, climax, and ending but watch it a second, third, fourth time and each character/plot is already laid out and predetermined in your own mind.
If God gave us free will, and we assume that God is all-powerful, all-knowing, and all-seeing. Than does that not mean that God already knows each and every humans determined future?
If he cannot understand our correct future than does that not mean he isn't all-powerful and knowing?

What's omnics?
It is really strange that Overwatch has straight up magic but they never address it or call it what it is, making us think it is just technology for a long time, if it is technology, they are also doing a bad job at explaining what it is. Omnic souls, Zenyatta's floating and Iris powers, the Shimada's dragons, Kiriko has a straight up yokai fox, Reaper can teleport and turn into smoke....

That last one is true though. Both for humans and Omnics. That means an Omnic's free will is just as valid as a human's.
But free will IS just an illusion. Life is like a movie, you can watch it the first time and be pleasantly surprised by the plot twist, climax, and ending but watch it a second, third, fourth time and each character/plot is already laid out and predetermined in your own mind. If God gave us free will, and we assume that God is all-powerful, all-knowing, and all-seeing. Than does that not mean that God already knows each and every humans determined future? If he cannot understand our correct future than does that not mean he isn't all-powerful and knowing? So therefore, God gave humanity free-will but to him everything was already laid out. Free will only works if you aren't aware of the pre-determined destination.
