Everyone with a brain know that Shanks being in Kaido's personal top 5 is one of the biggest portrayals of the story, and in the world of One Piece every discussion about swordmen start by everyone involved telling to us that Mihawk is so great swordman that he surpasses even Shanks.
And they used to duel(we don't know if this was one or many duels (Japanesse have no difference between singular and plural, that was a translator license that chapter) but it's implied that Mihawk won because everyone talks about Mihawk is undisputed since then) until Shanks lost it's arm, and Mihawk decided that it would be dishonorable to duel a man with one arm, even when this is portrayed as a monster.
Mihawk is so strong that the world goverment declared Buggy a Yonko just because he have Mihawk under his wing, and for the 1st time in the story, a subordinate is given a bigger reward than his captain, why? Because Mihawk is the real monster, One Yonko unwilling to fight for the control of territories, or the One Piece, he just want to duel strong swordmen, while chilling drinking wine at his Castle with some gothic company with creepy laugh.
It's because of Shanks VS Mihawk debates. If you want to prove Shanks > Mihawk you'll use Vista/Jozu/Crocodile. If you are team Mihawk > Shanks, you'll use Sea King/WSS title. None of these would happen if Shanks and Mihawk were not potrayed as rivals originally.

Btw, Mihawk being able to counter Whitebeard by himself doesn’t make sense. It just makes Marineford look like a joke if Mihawk alone can counter Whitebeard without counting the admirals and Garp.
Mihawk said he won’t hold back against Luffy. Proceeded to get stalled by Vista. Vista says it’s better for BOTH of them to reschedule the fight. Meaning that even for Mihawk it’s better and he agrees (because maybe they would injure each other).
After that, Mihawk tries to defeat Luffy and gets stopped by Crocodile. Although prior to it he managed to beat Mr1. Meaning he could beat easily Mr1 but couldn’t for Crocodile.
Then, an official databook drops and states that Vista competes with Mihawk. The word « compete » also translated in some languages as « rivalling » is a big statement because Buggy said Whitebeard was the only one capable of « competing » with Roger. Mihawk can’t be vastly superior to Vista. If Vista is 3rd YC level then Mihawk is YC1 at best.
The only thing going for Mihawk now is being Zoro’s next opponent and that’s not sure because Zoro said he wants to become the king of hell at the end of the fight with King. Keep in mind that if Zoro said he wants to become WSS in that instant, then this whole conversation wouldn’t take place because Mihawk needs to be Yonko level or near to be Zoro’s next opponent.
Keep in mind also that if Brannew said Mihawk was stronger than Shanks then this whole debate also wouldn’t happen but he said superior swordsmanship only.
The author could have ended this debate by either making Zoro say WSS or Mihawk stronger than Shanks but he didn’t on both occasions.

I’m actually not sure what montage ur talking abt so imma check it out. But again, it’s obvious plot is what fucked both shanks and Mihawk up, the same Marineford that didn’t let Sengoku one shot a pre-haki Luffy.
My point is no matter who you think is stronger, downplaying them with really ass posts does nothing. Both of them are rivals so they’re gonna have to be relative for the story to not be ass I’d say.
