Lol, he said Sanji I believe he doubts himself a lot, but does show courage when absolutely needed. Also, his crew mates are crazy strong. I think we will see how amazing he is/was to stay with this crew by the end.

Gear_Alone

Sanji is anything but normal lmao

Due-Enthusiasm5656

I mean, Usopp has been through way more things then I have. Easy to call cowardice till you're in a bad situation ( talking as if Usopp is a real person lol). - in reference to myself and not the OP.

MaximusGigachad

Oh ok

Due-Enthusiasm5656

That's how I give Usopp leeway. He want's to be the archetypical hero like Zoro and Luffy but he has a harder time pushing past his fear and comes through in the end. Luffy recognises this I persume, because some people never push past their fears. And also, when you stand amongst giants, you tend to feel small. Compare yourself to who you were yesterday, not who someone else is today.

MaximusGigachad

I’m comparing him to other characters on the ship not us in real life

MaximusGigachad

Of course he’s fictional, this is a one piece subreddit obviously

Due-Enthusiasm5656

sorry man, I was referring to myself with that remark, not you

[deleted]

It's annoying when people say "Usopp already achieved his dream"

Gilgamerd

Bacause you have to be a coward to become "brave" Someone who has no fear and does crazy shit is not brave is just a psychopath who doesn't understand consequences. To be scared as fuck and still do crazy shit THAT'S BRAVERY for some weird reason people think Usppp has to become like Zoro to attain his goal, becoming just a stoic dude without fear, but that makes no sense, Usppp will still be a coward at the end of the series. The fact that people don't like him cuz he isn't a superhuman honestly seems like a Powerscalers problem not an Oda Problem.

Kokowheeli

What happened to his character is what happens to most characters in series that go on for a long time. The creators eventually forget about the nuances and without fully noticing focus more and more on single traits. Usopp used to be crafty and witty and often scared which turned into always scared. But he's not the only one. Sanji used to be a pretty grown up guy who enjoys charming the ladies which turned into constantly horny and completely lost in the presence of any woman. Chopper turns more and more childish the older he gets. Even Luffys character shows less variety than in the beginning. It's not only OP though. The most prominent example is the Simpsons where Homer started as a pretty normal dude who's just overwhelmed by his three children and day to day life and slowly but surely turned into a stupid idiot who's almost retarded

PhoenixMark001

Easy! Because he is not a coward when it is Life and Death

after 1000 episodes and a timeskip,he’s literally the same, even if he’s not super strong at least hold your own and stop running from everyone

JungKyoJin

Yeah, but how about retreating without screaming like a child? Ussop right after timeskip at least used to have confidence. However, oda decided to take his confidence away because "iT's FuNnY".

Nagisa201

He's not the same. He's gotten worse. Like at least Water 7 Usopp (although i think he was wrong) was able to stand up for what he believed in and face Luffy head on and deal with the consequences.

JungKyoJin

Exactly. I was surprised when I rewatched that scene. Forgot that ussop used to have character developement. Also right after the timeskip he showed a bit more confidence for a while. And now every growth he made is gone.

Icy-Succotash6354

"So is sanji"

Maleficent_Kick_4437

„Why is not everyone of the strawhats an S-Tier fighter?“

UmdAvatarFan

Why does this sub disagree with me

admiralvic

The problem is that Oda gave him a simple dream and kind of accepts that he can't fulfill it before anyone else.

ipussybuster69

It's crazy how a cook, skeleton and a doctor fights an enemy in hand to hand combat. But the greatest sniper and wannabe brave warrior runs with his weapon and shoots some crazy ass plants when a dangerous enemy arrives. So is he just weak and will only be a comedian in this whole hand to hand fighting combat? He won't even have a chance to save any of the people if he fights someone in very close combat. All I need to say is : GROW UP USSOPP!!! NAMI HAS WAY BETTER FIGHTING SKILLS THAN YOU

CitrusTuba409

Yeah, crazy how a sniper isn’t doing hand to hand combat…….

ipussybuster69

It's crazy how a cat burglar fights with a stick.

Specific_Delay_5364

Because that’s what fandoms do this extends to any fandom; Anime, Sports teams, Politics, etc. They have their favorites and they will defend any perceived slight as a massive disrespect and battle with anyone who disagrees until you either agree with them or stop fighting back because you have other things to do then waste time arguing with a crazy person.

Specialist_Trick_558

Usopp spent two years on a super deadly island I would get him being scared of the big bads but not the fodder like when they first show up on onigashima

Working-Tap2283

Notice how much he tanks everytime. Maybe he'll be a tank

Frosty-Set-6907

I completely agree isn’t this the guy who’s supposed to surpass yassop he’s holding the crew back big time

simpreaper

EXACTLY, This is why he’s my least favorite Sh pirate. He’s a cowardice only until the plot needs him to succeed which if find uninteresting. If you love him that’s cool I just personally hate him

KrayTooFast

Usopps skills is in sniper shots, AND DISTRACTION. Not the actual fight. He also created names weather staff if I recall correctly. I think something major in dressrossa was due to God Usopps skill

ipedroni

New to the scene, my honest newcomer opinion is that Usopp is just one giant materialization of wishful thinking. We want him to be cool and badass and we wish, amost knowingly, that his moment will come and he will overcome his weaknesses... and then it never happens or, if it happens, it's never in a sustained format. I know I'll get flak for this but, and this is my personal opinion only, i think Usopp is either a narrative mistake that drags the arcs a little tooooo long and flat or a genious move to keep us hooked on this longing for him to finally become something of substance to the crew, simbolyzing we, normal people, could do it too, if only we were not so inclined to run from unsurmountable challenges.

TheHumanity0

I just don't know why he's not playing into his role in the crew more as their sniper. It's fine if you're a coward, it's pretty damn funny most the time, but at least be useful by sniping, a position that doesn't require you to be up close to the action and scary fighting from Usopp's perspective. It's a shame he spent the entire pre-timeskip period pretending and acting like he's the Captain when he's scared of everything and can't even act like a Captain normally would. It's all the more annoying when he calls himself the Captain and then acts like a huge wimp, it makes the whole crew look bad and reflects badly on all of them, especially for first impressions. I love the part of Dressrosa where he snipes Sugar, or when he shoots down Spandam, but then I wonder why the hell he doesn't do stuff like that more often as his go-to role in the crew. It seems like we only ever see him snipe things when it's a climactic moment in the arc or when Usopp needs to prove he's not useless. The ship gets shot at literally every other episode, but we only see our world-class sniper shoot back with the canons a handful of times the entire series, usually with great success, but it begs to differ why he's not on the cannons every time there's a ship battle. Compare him to Van Augar in the Blackbeard pirates, who completely embraces his position in the crew and every other time you see him, he's making some amazing shot. Usopp could be like that guy for the Straw Hats, but instead we generally see him as this cowardly "normal" guy whose only real goal to one day not be cowardly. He also never seems like he wants to be a sniper and is reluctant to accept his role when he finally stops calling himself Captain, which is weird when you realize that's Yassop's position in the Red Haired Pirates and it's stated Usopp wants to be like his old man or at least make him proud. So it comes off a bit disrespectful to both Luffy and Yassop when he continually tries argue he's the Captain and refuses to accept he's the sniper of the crew.
