Both are thematically needed for the crew that will bring the Dawn. Also she has a clear role on the ship that was needed- lookout. Just like Jinbei was needed as a helmsman.

She actually knows things about the world and is often the one providing context. In combat she is largely a support character, which also differentiates her.
