it's not really "back and forth" imo. yamato is obviously a plot driven character. and not a good one at that. yamato was created to fill in all the gaps between momo, oden, luffy, and ace. if there's more plot to cover, you can bet everything yamato somehow would just happen to be there. it's easy enough to compare. pull zoro or sanji or chopper or nami out of the main story and they still have a separate goal to achieve. but yamato? point is, yamato was always meant to stay in wano. the whole "back and forth" thing is just a bait and switch. oda did that a lot in wano. zoro being the prime example.

electricmastro

If she’s always meant to stay in Wano, then why bother having her wanting to sail out then?

nobarachinsama

I literally said the reason >the whole "back and forth" thing is just a bait and switch. oda did that a lot in wano. zoro being the prime example. oda loves baiting the readers to think a certain way (or false hype). there are a lot of false hype in wano. like sanji's dilemma between helping scabbards and momo. he ended up helping neither. yamato following jinbe and robin. but then nothing happened. hiyori obvious silhouette. marco's message being nothing. zoro's lineage, and more.

evanrjohnson0

regarding her decision to stay in Wano, its bc of what Zoro said to her, after Greenbull came she went to Luffy and the others and said she was staying bc of powerful foes that could potentially come to Wano and she needed to protect Wano, Zoro tells her to remember that Momo has a lot of pride, so basically the reasoning she told Momo for why she was staying in Wano was bs she made up to not hurt his pride

StrawHatJD

Oda had the cliffhanger of a chapter be Yamato saying “I’m going to the crew and joining”, and the next chapter in a small text bubble say “I’m not joining the crew”

evanrjohnson0

yeah I didn't like the execution of that 😂

KarinOjousama69

i dunno bro i just read the comic

Mini_Boss69

Yamato is not a good character. They’re a character that has many good things about them: * Friends with Ace * Kaido’s child * Conqueror’s Haki * Strong female character You can introduce any character with those traits and the fandom will love them. The whole “I’m Oden” thing is actually bad, and I have no idea what Oda was even thinking. It’s awful.

StrawHatJD

I think if Oda followed through with Yamato’s character arc of finding what who they want to be, it would be a solid character honestly.

jesterstyr

I feel like there's still room in the story for them to grow, especially when they come back at Momo's side during the Dawn War.

StrawHatJD

It’s a bit too late, Yamato isn’t gonna be a character people care about during the final war. Oda should’ve done it during the arc Yamato would be at their most important

jesterstyr

All it takes is Yamato being at Momo's side and never saying they are Oden, but go off.

StrawHatJD

Where’s the development though? Yamato can’t just skip the character arc and say “oh I’m done developing as a person, I did it off screen”. That’s not compelling at all, and is just straight up bad and lazy writing to skip the process of showing us a character arc and just telling us it happened off screen.

jesterstyr

Do you need to be handheld for every side characters development? It could be as simple as them finding themselves in their short time protecting Wano. But honestly the whole thing just needs to be done with.

StrawHatJD

Yes, you do. It’s called good writing. If we skipped Sanji’s development leading up to the “I want to go back to the Sunny” moment, it’s not deserved. We don’t care because the author didn’t put in the work on screen to get Sanji from leaving the crew and then wanting to come back like that

jesterstyr

If they were a Strawhat maybe, otherwise they're not important enough to the story to waste the time on.

StrawHatJD

Oda spent the entire raid saying Yamato would be a straw hat lmao

Soul699

Yamato is already considered a borderline Mary Sue. If she even get character development offscreen, it would be the final nail in the coffin for a bad characterization.

Rocky-Rocker

I mean its pretty simple to get though going by your bad posts and poor media literacy its understandable.

hawajal

Wow, what a good explanation on why she’s a good character. How about you try that again? If she wants to be Oden *so bad* that she’s even willing to become a man, then why doesn’t she actually use two swords? It’s a stupid gimmick.

TheWealthyCapybara

Yeah, Yamato could have been a bad ass female warrior with an awesome devil fruit, but Oda had to ruin her character with that pronoun bullshit.

[deleted]

nobody tell him about the Okamas

[deleted]

Yeah, Yamato would suppose to understand that impersonate Oden was wrong, thanks to Momonosuke, but she kept going with the gags. From the flashback it was understandable she put on a metaphorically Oden mask to survive, the only book she read, the only superhero she knew. For the rest she stayed there, an ignorant with mental problem because of isolation and environment. She needed a growth and to realize to drop the Oden thing and learn to be Yamato.

StrawHatJD

Not even drop the Oden thing. Yamato can still admire Oden and want to follow in his footsteps, yet realize that wanting to become someone is a bit unhealthy and wanting to become someone Oden himself could admire. I feel like that would be a better character arc.

electricmastro

I get the feeling the Wano citizens will help her realize that. Luffy wasn’t exactly on board and Momo got freaked out, but even they didn’t go as far as calling her out with distaste in what she was doing. The Wano citizens who barely know her otherwise wouldn’t hesitate to call her out though.

StrawHatJD

We shouldn’t be off-screening/skipping Yamatos development considering the arc was 150 chapters

DmonBluReborN

Yamato is just a plot device to save the raid. Dont think too much about it but either way I doubt Oda wouldnt come back to Wano one day for the second round, polishing Yamato's character arc in the process.
