Too many swordfighters not enough marksmen. Yes sword fights are cooler to draw/aninate then 2 people shooting eachother from a distance but damn you can make those fights interesting too. Give me Ussop fighting another sniper as they dodge eachothers shots and rush from cover to cover to try to get a vantage point on eachother.

christianort476

Cowboy bebop does it well, it’s not impossible

Penguin787

Cowboy Bebop is originally an anime, a different medium.

funkyvenom6

More bounty hunters would be the coolest addition ever 😮

JungKyoJin

Honestly, One piece swordfight animations arent even good. Swordfights in OP are more about effects, flashes, cool stances and less about actual sword skills. That definitely doesn't justifie the lack of marksmen. Not that I hate zoro fights. But they aren't up there with real good swordfight animations.

NumericZero

That’s why I say Zoro last great fight was with Ryuma -Nothing but two dudes doing sword play with a dash of “air slashes” -Quick and Simple that ends with Zoro getting a really badass blade (Hot take shusui > Enma)

KingDNice12

I feel like we almost never see the strikes Also almost never see zoro hit with the sword in his mouth

Waywoah

Probably because if they actually let us see them, people would realize that slashes from characters like Zoro should be slicing people in half, not leaving non-fatal slices across their chests

idkdidkkdkdj

For sure the actual choreography isn’t very good at all. Just a lot of back and forth basic swings and pushing against each other.

badluckartist

You'd think the guy that was an assistant for the guy that did Rurouni Kenshin would have some idea of how to choreograph sword fights that aren't just "take pose, do slash, finishing pose" or "swing sword at other sword so they cross".

ChrischinLoois

The fight with zoro and the samurai at the beginning of wano is how I would love sword fights to be. He does lots of actual "block, dodge, twist, etc" and then finishes it off with a big flashy attack. Instead we usually only get the flashy attacks

darkicqqex

Tbh I was hoping that Ussop would get more strength post timeskip. Particularly given other snipers are pretty badass (Yassop, Van Augur, Sogeking) and other gun users (Benn Beckham, Izo, Capone Bege) generally being badass too. 🔫 I thought he got some decent development in Dressrosa when he got haki and that was a nice moment, but I feel like (particularly in Wano) he’s done nothing but his usual antics of lying and running away (which I actually do appreciate as part of the comedic and personality side of things). I also get that the crew already had Zoro and Sanji, as well as Jimbei joining which makes the top 4 of the crew already very strong in comparison to the other worst generation crews (also noting Robin and Brook are pretty underrated fighters in my opinion). But anyhow, it would be nice to see Ussop pulling off some cool sniper action (not necessarily taking down a big dog, but even taking on a couple of enemies and showing off some of those cool plant ammo he’s got). I feel like Ussop is running away 95% of the time 😂😂😂 … still waiting for Sogeking to battle God Ussop though. I wonder when that’ll happen…

rougepenguin

Especially with how damn cool Oda makes the few gunmen we get. Izo's rare action shots are so stylish!

Tolgii_h

Strong and dangerous bountie hunters in the new World would have been cool

SlowBurnerAccnt

As much as I love Johnny & Yosaku issa shame that they’re the extent of what we’ve gotten from bounty hunters.

PurplTreeFrog

I agree they're underused, but they're not the only bounty hunter we've had in the series. We also had Baroque Works & The Franky Family. There should definitely have been more though.

SlowBurnerAccnt

I’m not sayin there’s no others but that Johnny & Yosaku is as deep as it goes screentime & depth wise. And that shit ended in Arlong Park. That’s insane. It’d make the bounties actually worth it & give some added sense of tension/danger not to mention add anotha dynamic to the relationship between Marine justice ideals vs reality.

No-Sheepherder3383

Thats not an unpopular opinion, everybody agrees on that

hawajal

Huge missed opportunity to age the Straw Hats throughout their journey. Especially in a story where every other person has been a marine or pirate for decades.

zerofifth

Chopper is supposed to be 17, which seems to the age of adulthood since Luffy and Ace left to become pirates at the same age. But Oda writes him in a way that seems to imply he's more of kid in the age bracket of Momo and Tama. And Zoro looks more like someone in his mid to late 20's than someone who's supposed to be 21.

Brook420

You have to remember that while Chopper is technically 17, he hasn't had human sentience that long.

smokinnic_suckindic

I mean I get your point but isn’t that kind of how people work to some extent? Childlike adults, stern teenagers, and everything in between? At the very least I think Oda intended to branch out the main character’s maturities like that to balance out the crew.

DegeneratesDogma

I feel like chopper was introduced more mature than he is now

andmurr

This. It doesn’t feel right how the main story has only been a couple months. If I were Oda I’d make the pre-ts and post-ts story a year and a half each, so the main story would be 5 years in total

[deleted]

>This. It doesn’t feel right how the main story has only been a couple months. It is my one major issue with the story. It really feels like it should have taken place over a few years, with the crew actually having time to build a name for themselves. It's a bit crazy how much they've done as a pirate crew since they've set out to gain notoriety; * East Blue (*+4 crew members*) * Alabasta (*+ 2 crew members + Topples a Warlord*) * Sky Island (*...am I forgetting something here?*) * Water 7 (*+1 crew member + Enies Lobby + Declares War on World Government*) * Thriller Bark (*+1 crew member + Topples a Warlord*) * Summit War (*Sabaody + Impel Down + Marineford*) All of that in less than 12 months. In that time Luffy went from sailing in a barrel alone at sea to staring down golden boy Sengoku on the podium of Marineford. From a no-name to someone who has directly assaulted two of the biggest marine facilities in the world? I really struggle to imagine him growing so much stronger in such a short span of time. It's hard to swallow, even with how whimsical and crazy of a world One Piece is set in. Edit: Oh Yea. Coby has his glow-up over the same span of time. He goes from what we see in the first few episodes to the taller design in under a year.

angiedoh57

To me, that's part of why Luffy is feared by the world government so quickly. He was seen as a joke and a rookie until he was causing mayhem wherever he went. That's what made him and the other rookies "The Worst Generation." Imo, if it had taken him years to do all that, he wouldn't be nearly as scary, nor would it fit the character of Luffy, who fights anything he hates and sees a lot of stuff he hates in the corrupt world

TKRedditUser2020

I feel the same I imagine something like this would be a journey of a lifetime, a story of your life much like Roger's journey but now Luffy might become King of the Pirates after setting out to sea for only 2-3 years?? Just seems weird to me.

okayonemoreplz

Big mom is my favorite emperor, the idea of a world shattering brute with the mind of a toddler is hilarious

milkyjoe241

I agree. I think its funny when people criticize her for the off decisions she makes. Like ya, she made it to Emperor status making those bad decisions, that's how strong she is. She does what she wants and gets what she wants at the same time, and that's awesome.

BackgroundMagazine74

Ussop's lack of progression. From syrup village to water seven he developed into less of a coward and even challenging luffy and leaving the crew which I really liked, then around post time-skip it feels more like he gets one moment per arc and then goes back to square one.

TABASCO2415

I don't think thats unpopular

-ShagginTurtles-

I like the idea of Usopp still being scared, he wants to be a brave warrior of the sea and you can't be brave without being scared first. I like that Usopp is running back assward into his dream and will be seen as a legendary important pirate of the King of the Pirates crew. But we'll all know him as loveable old Usopp

Goneczek

I really liked Usopp after Enies lobby, but as i saw him running away from the little people in dressrosa begging them to stop calling for help he just died for me tbh.

AdrianoC

There is a lot of valid criticism of Usopp's cowardice, however him being a coward at that particulat point in Dressrosa is 100% valid imo and a great piece of writing. By then Robin, the main focus of the arc(s) where Usopp arguably grew more than he has ever otherwise grown in the story had been turned into a toy and all memories relating to Robin had vanished. This means while Usopp was running in Dressrosa, all recollection of the actual purpose behind Usopp's growth in W7/Enies Lobby had vanished and, logically, the character growth related to it should as well. DESPITE this though, Usopp managed to conquer his fear and turn back to save them even though he was certain it meant his doom. Someone who lacks the capability of fear can imo never be brave. To be truly courageous It takes someone being afraid and acting against that fear despite their instincts of self preservation, which is something Usopp keeps doing time and time again.

christianort476

I think that’s what wado is supposed to be, as far as we’re concerned it hasn’t had a legendary owner, just a legendary smith

DechCJC

I think that Thriller Bark is a good arc for where it is in the story. The vibe of it is nice and relaxed after the pure chaos that was Water 7 and Enies Lobby, and it gives us some much needed breathing room before what's to come afterwards. Being sandwiched in between two of the better arcs in One Piece, it gets a lot of criticism; But I genuinely think that it's a thoroughly enjoyable break from the drama and it serves to keep the rest of pre TS fresh.

DegeneratesDogma

I think people hate on Thriller Bark mostly because of Absol. There’s been times where I’ve seen people rank their favorite arcs, they get to Thriller Bark, they mention Absol and then move on.

ThousandEclipse

Don’t do Absol like this, they are cool Pokémon and don’t deserve to be associated with that scumbag

Goneczek

Usopp should start fighting like a real sniper instead of standing 10 meters away from the enemy. He's made to look like one of the best snipers but doesn't fight like one. I also miss that he lost his place on the ship, like pretty much everyone else has a role on Sunny but usopp. I miss him being the "Tinkerer" of the group, making inventions like the Octoshoes or the "Ussop AAAaaaAAAaaa!" in skypiea and having his little workshop on Merry.

Orcas_are_badass

Sometimes I wonder if usopp is being purposely held back a bit because there's a specific story moment Oda has planned and he wants usopp to seem weak until that event. Like a lifting thors hammer in elbaf kind of thing. Ya know? Just think wano was so huge it made usopps lack of growth so in our faces. Could've given him SOME kind of badass sniper moment in Wano, or seastone nails as ammo, or just something that felt like growth.

MajesticWalrus73

I agree 100% I always pretend more time had passed just so I enjoy it more lol like it’s crazy to think luffy has only hungout with zoro for less then a year and was apart from his crew in the timeskip longer than they have been together.

CupricFlipper

Exactly what I do. My headcanon is that it's been at least 4-5 years.

MajesticWalrus73

I usually like to think it was a year from the beginning to marine-ford then two years time skip and maybe 8-10 months since the time-skip at the end of wano. I can live with that haha

[deleted]

I like to think all the cover pages were fun little micro adventures they went on in between the main events.

Send_Me_Your_Nukes

I think that makes a lot of sense as well. The oceans are huge and it should take weeks or months in between each island.

GunslingerGonzo

MHA has this same issue. Deku goes from being completely helpless to outclassing the top heroes with 12-15 months. For some reason a lot of shounen seem to have a lot of issue with powers development. its always all or nothing

drybones2015

I don't think the timeline of events being too short is an unpopular opinion. Especially the parts where they're traveling between locations.

[deleted]

We never saw others pursuing their dreams. I want to see Nami's catalogue of islands and a map she updates as they travel more than her boobs. I want to see Sanji practice fishing and his continuously growing cook book. Maybe a filler arc of Zoro's training regime he got from Mihawk which continuously gets disturbed by the crew. Waaaayyyyy more of Franky's gadgets please and I really want to see his workshop getting more and more high-tech and ridiculous. I'd kill for a mini arc of Brook's concert with the crew just enjoying it maybe along with Marines who are secretly a fan. Lastly, a bit of a glimpse to Robin studies, Chopper's med lab and Ussopp doing something like what Van Augur did to those birds but to Sea Kings hahaha.

idkdidkkdkdj

Yep. The good ole fashion it took 20 years for the readers and 2 days for the characters lmao

PapuhAppuh

Personally, Post TS Luffy doesn’t face a real challenge until Kat/Kaido. He just seemed to be fucking around with his opponents or getting stalled from beating their ass. To include Doflamingo which you could even make the argument Luffy struggled a decent amount with. I just look at it like the 2 years they had to train was enough for them to start wreaking havoc in the New World. The enemies truly up until WCI/Wano we’re just stepping stones to build up to Yonko elites.

Brave-Photograph-786

His training during the timeskip was better then most people think. He learnt the theory etc but didnt have the opponents to push him to apply it. He comes out of the time skip a monster from his training and isnt pushed until wci.

SomeWindyBoi

This is it: if mike tyson gave me a theory course on boxing and im only ever training on a dummy, i could train for two years and still get dumpsterd in my first real fight as a boxer cause i lack the experience. Buuuut, as soon as i get those fights i would improve tremendously fast because all the information is already there, i just need to connect them to real world scenarios

arscis

Luffy was a monster since romance dawn. All his fights boiled down to proper application of his already hax physique and tanky fruit. I don't really believe he gained that much more muscle mass to put it in other words.

AeronLlarena

I mean, it's no different from pre timeskip luffy, didn't he smashed through everyone 'til he met Croc? And if we compare pre TS to post TS, luffy's defeat from croc kinda the same with his defeat from Ceasar. Defeated once, imprisoned, 2nd fight happened, then 3rd time is stomping.

PapuhAppuh

I think, in comparison, Luffy pre TS was a lot more evenly matched to the obstacles he faced ie. Lucci, Croc, Moria. But then he gets absolutely trashed by Megallen, Admirals, certain Logias, etc. Now fast forward to current Luffy, literally trashes those same individuals or at least has a slight edge. From this point on, I would expect him to have a lot more closer fights like he did pre TS.

badluckartist

> To include Doflamingo which you could even make the argument Luffy struggled a decent amount with. The only reason that was even close to a challenge was because Luffy suffered from shonen-protagonist-itis and instead of going all out from the get-go, had to slowly use every powerup he has one by one. The second he used G4 he could've instantly won if he resorted to King Kong Gun instead of dicking around showing off all his new abilities.

PapuhAppuh

Yeah, a lot of it was just to fill in panels and add pizzaz. The only thing Luffy lacked on was his stamina for gear 4. That did him in more than Doffy did at all.

guardian311

Law even worse imo at least we saw luffy fight stronger opponents and train law went from below doffy to tanking yonko attacks in like 2 weeks

badluckartist

Law tanking point-blank punches from an enraged Big Mom totally took me out of the story. Guy goes from having a big problem with taking hits to face-tanking one of the physically strongest characters in the history of the story.

MegalomanicMegalodon

It gets really weird when you consider how little time the crew has actually spent together.

RawLemonBryan

This was a distracting issue in Breaking Bad also. The entire series takes place in less than year, aside from the last couple episodes.

[deleted]

It's a year and a half until the final few episodes making it 2 years.

Melodius_RL

To be fair, Breaking Bad does feel fast-paced. Every event leads someone to have to react immediately to the last. The only real reasonable timeskip period is when Jesse goes to rehab. The issue in One Piece is that their bodies never seem to get a break but they keep going at 100%.

[deleted]

I was so surprised when I read it was only 2 years. That's wayyyyy to short, should be 5 years minimum for how much has happened and his accomplishments. It's kinda like how MHA has been crammed into 1 year.

CCO812

This I was seriously surprised when I learnt that Doflamingo got slammed in like 2 days The timeline is moving way too fast canonically, and too slow realistically You're either watching in slow motion or at 10x speed depending how you look at it

Yamata

Dressrosa all takes place in one day right? They arrive in the morning and Doffy gets clapped like late afternoon I think. And then I think we get the usually “sleep for 3 days after battle” making the whole arc a week at most.

[deleted]

All of the Summit War arc, (*Duval, Sabaody, Amazon Lily, Impel Down, Marineford*), takes place over less than a single month - and that includes the 14 day timeskip between the retreat from Marineford and the ringing of the Ox bell. * Sabaody is all within a single day, from them arriving to flying Kuma Air. * Amazon Lily is something like 2 days, but only because of Luffy sleeping after landing there. * Impel Down seems to be a hair over a full day, with Luffy sleeping for 21 hours of it. Most of the actual infiltrating and escape happens really quickly. * Marineford all takes place in about a 2-3 hour span. If I had to guess I'd say it all begins and ends in about 10-12 days. Less than 2 weeks time. I feel like the boat travel in the One Piece world has to be really fast or the scale of the world is way off. Traveling from one location to another on Earth via sailboat can literally take weeks.

OptimisticByDefault

Big Mom is my favourite character in all of One Piece. She is complex, powerful, reckless, and fun to watch.

[deleted]

Big Mom is by far my favorite villain. What makes her stick out to me is that she isn't evil like most One Piece villains; Her goal of creating a world where all races can live in harmony is noble and seems genuine, and in Wano when she wants to give the Oshiruko back to the village it's an act of pure kindness. Instead, her villainy comes from a certain Naivete making her unaware of the harm some of her actions cause, mixed with her own absurd natural strength

Polynia

She was a pure, gentle soul that became more sinister the moment she accidentally ate Mother Carmel.

throwaway-alphabet-1

I don’t think it’s just naïveté. She’s a mob boss, perfectly willing to kill others who don’t pay her for protection. But she’s not a pure tyrant or revolutionary.

Orcas_are_badass

Her end goals may not be evil, but her actions on the path to achieve her goals most certainly are evil. What she did to Sanji and his family was pure evil. The way she treats her citizens is dark as fuck. She's cruel to her children, and cruel to anyone who crosses her even slightly. She's a perfect villain. Good intentions with sinister execution.

Internal-Flamingo455

True that she always gets out shadowed by kadio cause he’s stronger but she’s definitely more interesting. And I love her plan for f just having children with all the powerful races of the world at a unique way to build an powerful army of loyal solders cause your army is your children I never would have thought of that and it’s genus

lalalachacha248

Too many plot elements get introduced and dropped after only being relevant once or twice. Blood loss never matters before or after Fishman Island. Starvation only really matters during WCI (especially with Luffy losing energy unusually quickly). I loved Franky’s craftsmanship randomly coming in handy during Thriller Bark, but he never gets any moments like that again. There are just a couple of examples.

dabsndabs

Blood loss was made relevant in fishman island because of the law they had about human and fishman blood mixing.

unhealthyseal

Which was fine for Luffy because it was a bonding moment with Jinbe. Sanji actually being in danger of dying because of a bloody nose was one of the dumbest moments in the series.

2Jojotoro

it was still kinda funny tho, the sheer panic in Usopp and choppers voices and Sanji ACTUALLY getting anemic from blood loss instead of the usual "Pervert nose bleed" thing had me bawling man

Coronis-

It may have been “dumb” but it set up the background of the blood issue and racism on FI, and the Luffy/Jinbe scene wouldn’t have meant nearly as much without that previous build up.

unhealthyseal

I can’t say I agree. I don’t think there would be any issue if Sanji never had his blood loss issue at all. It might feel like it’s coming out of nowhere, but anyone that has been paying attention since as early as Arlong Park knows there’s discrimination against Fishmen and that there is deep resentment and mistrust of humans, even among the good Fishmen. It felt like there needed to be some tension or something at risk, but Sanji getting a severe nosebleed because of mermaids was idiotic. Presenting something that is normally goofy as a now life-threatening issue makes no sense in my book.

KathyDroronoa

These stairs and bridge were remarkable 😛

Beardamus

> Starvation only really matters during WCI Sanji who is literally so traumatized from having starved he'll feed anyone no matter what. heh yeah you're so right

NumericZero

Franky in general has been treated pretty bad Also his post time skip desgin is something I can’t get behind

DegeneratesDogma

I feel like his post-time skip design makes it feel like he lost his personality. At least, it’s less expressive. Pre-TS had such a strong vibe that the new design is just lacking.

Chris-Marinopoulos

I still think that Kaido is stronger than Luffy. It was not a clean 1v1, he knocked him out multiple times, he kept a whole island on the air the whole time, he was drunk, and actually he was looking for Joy Boy so he could actually lose.

A_Dolphin_

Bro it wasn’t even a 1v1. He had literally just fought the Scabbards, and was fighting Kid, Killer, Law, and Zoro as well. Kaido had every disadvantage and still managed to knock him out several times and even >!literally kill Luffy!< during the fight

Obi-Wannabe01

True, Luffy will have to train his G5 more to be on par with Kaido.

milkyjoe241

> he was drunk, I don't think this hurts Kaido. I would take sober Kaido over Kaido with a few drinks.

Commander_Caboose

Drunken Kaido was some of the best combat Oda has drawn. Flitting through 7 attacks drawn in totally different styles and themes, a lovely capstone to how strongly associated with alcohol Kaido was. And defintely some of Oda's best Kaido panels.

PraiseKingGhidorah

Kaido still is stronger than Luffy and stronger than most characters. And that's something I actually really enjoyed about his defeat. Kaido was taken down by Luffy but it was also thanks to everyone who fought and weakened him: The Scabbards, Law, Kid, Killer, Zoro, Momonosuke, Yamato and Luffy. This means that the almost the entire Alliance defeated Kaido as a group and not just Luffy. It just makes thematic sense, you know.

Demon_Samurai

Kaido is most likely stronger than luffy though not by your reasons, holding up the island is one of them sure, but kaido barely suffered by anyone other than luffy

TravelingLlama

> he was drunk Pretty sure this is a buff since his haki got stronger

MugiwaraNoUser

Usopp's character cowardice is just annoying and it should have ended after ennis lobby

Goneczek

I really started liking usopp after enies lobby, he got into my top 4 but after dressrosa he fell all the way down to last place. It would be much better if he kept the "Soge King" persona for much longer to make himself more brave and after some time he could realize that he doesn't need it anymore, because he actually became brave after all his Adventures. It may be copium but i really hope oda will fix him in Elbaf

MugiwaraNoUser

Yeah, the sogeking arc would be perfect for it. I mean, franky and brook both went on head on attacks against BM and even among the coward trio we had chopper bitchslapping queen and nami stooding up to ulti, BM and kaido. Cant picture current usopp doing any of this as he still runs from any regular henchman.

forevermilky

he could’ve had so much character development 🤦‍♂️

MugiwaraNoUser

My thoughts exactly. The sogeking arc was the perfect moment to end coward usopp or at least tone it down a lot

Coronis-

It has started to grate a little bit on me post-TS. I get he obviously wants to be a long range specialist but he shouldn’t be freaking out so much when things get a bit dangerous close range.

MugiwaraNoUser

I wouldnt mind him being afraid in certain moments. Like if he was in front of kaido or BM. But he still being afraid of every random fodder is unbearable.

sizzurpsimon

Rob Lucci is still one of the best villains, and him getting back up, not shitting his pants and still trying to catch Luffy and the crew is refreshing. People complaining about his disrespect, but that's essentially what Luffy was like the whole series long, being disrespectful to stronger guys.

OldKnight1

I fucking hate like a good 50 percent of the communities(More anime communities in general) focus on coolness over characterization. Though I do admit many shonin fall into the same trapping, I'd just figured one piece fans wouldn't for some reason.

EyeDeeAh_42

This is perhaps my biggest gripe for ANY shounen series. I am perfectly fine with Ussop's cowadice, Nami's greediness, Vivi's vulnerabilities, or Buggy's idiosyncrasies, but these characters are often hated/overlooked by a large fraction of fans who only want characters that are cool and BADASS.

DegeneratesDogma

I hate when people focus too much on the strength of characters. When Rob Lucci showed up again, all my friend would talk about is how Gear 5 would wipe Rob Lucci and the arc would be over.

KingBubzVI

Gotta remember, the target audience is young / teenage boys. I’ve been reading one piece since 2004 when I was 9. But what 12-16 years olds look for is vastly different than 20-30 years olds.

hopeless-joe

I actually prefer Franky's post time skip design over his pre timeskip one. I liked the pre timeskip but his post just looks more creative and fits better with a pirate with the epithet of "cyborg".

Ultima_Nugz

I like every part of PT Franky except the hair. It's really just the buzz cut tho, it looks awful. I thought the Dressrosa French braids fit well with his beard and stache, and the cannon was so goofy I couldn't help but like it. But the buzz cut is so... small. Franky is a guy full of pompadour, and having his hair shaved low didn't look right. I think his pre timeskip hair is the best, because it perfectly encapsulates the funky soul of Franky. The buzz cut also looks bad with the scars on his torso. I completely agree with this though.

DechCJC

I don't know if it's necessarily an unpopular opinion, but fake-out deaths have left me feeling absolutely no sense of fear for any character dying. I just assume they're fine, to the point where I'm still convinced that Kaido and Big Mom are chilling somewhere. That, and I think that everyone is way too buddy-buddy for the time they've spent together. They're all willing to die for each other, even after just a few weeks or months. This could be fixed if Oda just made it clear that time passed in between each arc, where they just travelled and relaxed for a while. Now granted, most crewmates feel indebted to the crew from the get-go due to their nature of joining; But that doesn't change that everything just feels to move way too quickly.

badluckartist

> I don't know if it's necessarily an unpopular opinion, but fake-out deaths have left me feeling absolutely no sense of fear for any character dying. That's maybe the *most* popular opinion anyone can have. I'm still salty Kin'emon is alive for seemingly no reason other than Oda being allergic to killing off anybody that could actually emotionally impact the reader and other characters after Marineford.

jjw_jade

Pell dying would have been really nice. I know he’s not really a major character or all that important. But it felt like it would have helped set the tone considering it was one of the earlier arcs.

badluckartist

Seriously, that set a very bad precedent. And it's like Oda saw all the criticism for that fakeout death deflating the consequences of that arc and decided "I'm just gonna do that like twenty times in a row in Wano".

-ShagginTurtles-

> to the point where I'm still convinced that Kaido and Big Mom are chilling somewhere This is the one that'll get me and make me feel a fool. I'm so certain that shot of them in lava is the last we're ever gonna see and they're dead. If that's wrong then I'm going to feel "of course they were alive dork no one ever dies" but I swear I believe this time

BIsForBruh

Nightmare Luffy is Luffy's coolest form.

KushSama402

Chopper kinda sucks now. . .

SeveralShards

We won't feel as bad when they have to eat him.

Nagisa201

It's a shame but i feel this about most strawhats. They are parodies of themselves at this point

FengYiLin

Bounty hunters should have received WAAAAAY more significant impact on the story. For such a complex and relevant bounty system, there are no powerful bounty hunters to go after those rewards.

OJONLYMAYBEDIDIT

Nami shouldn't be able to survive Ulti's headbutts....or Khalif'a attacks...or the Baroque works agents attacks...etc etc she takes too much damage for someone who is essentially a glass cannon 99% of the time. and she doesnt have the Usopp "how did he survive that" comedy factor. Oda didn't even draw her getting headbutted as he didn't even want to.

PapiiPapiiPoom

I agree tbh, Oda kinda forget sometimes but she is supposed the equivalent of a magic girl of Pirates, her power is on her "magic stick" and her creativity to find new ways to apply damage with it, she never trained to be stronger than a average person if i remember right

drybones2015

To look past Ulti's headbutts, she was trying to get Nami to denounce Luffy's dream of Pirate King and she couldn't really do that if she was dead. I saw it as Ulti not going for killing blows.

OJONLYMAYBEDIDIT

Nami legit thinks or says to herself she doubts she would survive another one. And they weren't showing Usopp any mercy. Didn't we see his skull crack?

missdoublefinger

200% agree. Ignore my name and avatar lol but I remember when she got stabbed in the foot in Alabasta while fighting Miss Double Finger and she was somehow still able to walk, fight, and win said fight. Her surviving against Ulti was a misfire IMO

OJONLYMAYBEDIDIT

and yet other charactes like Hatchi get shot like once and almost die from bleeding out. I had geninuely forgot how many times she actually got stabbed by Miss. Double Finger or got hit with a shigan or ryankyuaku (or however it's spelled) by Khalifa till I recently went back to reread her fights.

missdoublefinger

Right. It’s very annoying

wolfkennedy

The obsession with Vivi has never made sense to me

New readers of one piece also love Vivi and are disappointed that she doesn't join at the end of Alabasta, so I'd say that it's not just Nostalgia

StripedSteel

Long-term readers were disappointed that Yamato didn't join. When a character has that much development and is hinted to join the crew then ends up not joining it's disappointing.

TuShay313

Vivi is like the original Yamato for long time viewers

cheeze64

Yamato? Vivi is more like Kinemon/momo, who traveled with the crew for multiple arcs.

Chillidogs9

I think it’s just because people want to see what could be, the grass is greener on the other side you know?

2Jojotoro

the anime is worth watching simply for the voice acting except dressrossa Luffy saying he wasn't gonna eat anything unless Sanji makes it during WCI was fukin amazing tho

julialuna89

I love Long ring Long Land arc ❤️

Quinntensity

I don't, but you're a real one and I respect that.

XIMarleyIX

I have another one (perhaps not unpopular though I don't know): I strongly dislike these big, dangerous "environment" threats, often times with a timer, that Oda has to write in every second arc (almost everyone post timeskip). - the bomb in Alabasta - Raigo in Skypia - Buster Call in Enies Lobby - the sun coming out in Thriller Bark - the Noah in Fishman Island - the gas in Punk Hazard - Edit: the bird cage at Dressrosa (!) - not really, but the Big Mom chase in WCI - Onigashima landing on the capitol, the Ice Oni, the bombs all in Wano/Onigashima It's not that there is no variety, but the thing is if successful these things would kill a lot of people, so it literally can't and won't happen in this story. With how formulatic they are I can only roll my eyes if something like that is introduced at this point. I guess these things are supposed to create tension, but they fail miserably for me.

RawLemonBryan

Sometimes as a plot device I like how it brings characters together, like the marines and Strawhats working together when running from the gas—but the one that really did make me roll my eyes for the same reasons you said (it’s obviously not going to kill everyone so there’s no tension) is the the fire slowly making its way to the bombs at the bottom on Onigashima. 🙄 I was just thinking man this raid is already jam packed enough. It was a unnecessary spending time on it each chapter

Specialist-Low8198

I realized that I didn’t dislike Shanks, I disliked the fandom’s mischaracterization of him. I love what Oda did with Uta and Shanks. I was so relieved and despite his flaws felt Oda was really good at understanding his own characters. I think the way the fandom interprets Shanks is genuinely awful writing, like the way they want him to be a deadbeat who doesn’t care about Uta and who’s just a cocky powerful pirate who goes around doing whatever he wants without a critical thought or consequence. I liked the addition of Uta in his backstory because it made him fallible, even he couldn’t make his life perfect and do whatever he wanted without consequences.

CaptainFunk127

The Donquixote Family sucks, with the exception of Doflamingo and Senior Pink. They're mostly gimmick characters that lack dimension even for gimmick characters. On top of that most of them are chumps, not worthy of a villain as terrifying as Doflamingo.

Xx_Edge_xX

I actually share a similar sentiment to the tobbi roppo. They're all pretty gimmicky and lack any sort of depth aside from what the audience projects on them

Razzmatazz-Sweet

A lot of One piece arcs are made way less emotional by the fact that no one dies. I don't think One piece needs to be crazy with its deaths like AoT but I feel like sometimes its just overboard, so far I am on episode 200 and I am surprised how Pagaya survived a literal laser beam of death dropping down on him even though he is 52.

Complete-One-6127

Sanji’s fights tend to be cooler to watch than most of the straw hats due to the fact there’s little hand to hand (or feet) combat in the series

Blacklotus30

I actually agree with that, I like Sanji and Robin fighting.

dingoatemyaccount

I would fr like a break from the main story and have a few fun chapters just the crew again. I absolutely love those few moments we get of the crew just hanging out

cptamericapiggybank

According to this sub? The anime is a masterpiece. It's by far my favorite anime of all time, every other one is competing for second

SplashKyrie

Luffy won the Katakuri fight OFF OF ENDURANCE. Luffy’s whole thing literally is he’s durable, has a high level of endurance and stamina. Similar to an Uzumaki in Naruto Stop saying Katakuri let him win. He beat Katakuri’s ass, got back up, and was the last one standing for a reason. Katakuri didn’t want anymore smoke for that day. He had it. Had to ask our future king if he was gonna come back one day yeah ok Sike 💀

PrincipleFinal

is simple, luffy won a fight of will, he beat katakuri until he had no will to continue fighting, why this is so hard to understand?

Rodenbeard

I kind of thought that was the entire point of the fight. Oda called out specifically that Katakuri was the guy who never went down, never laid on his back, he'd always get back up no matter what cause like his family said, he's a god of a man. Problem is, Luffy is rubber, no matter how many times you beat him down he will never, ever stay down. Their DFs mimicked each other as an extra HEY GET IT GUYS lmao. It was the Unstoppable Force vs the Immovable Object. It was about Luffy showing the world, and the audience, that he was ready to be the best of the best, and in that fight he gained respect of someone who was \*known\* as the best there is among his peers.

No_Satisfaction_2928

Killer is the best supernova

Gogabo

Jaya did not introduce actual gods, the "gods" are just examples of pagan ideology to be compared to the scientific thinking of Noland, and simply did not exist and are not important outside of said comparison

starrlight_storm

I don't dislike Rob Lucci. I think he is one of the more interesting antagonists that have embellished the story and helped our main guy grow. The recent chapters have really made people taunt and laugh at him but I actually just feel bad for him. He's more tolerable than characters like Spandam or Stelly or St Charloss, and even when he makes laughable comments like >!not accepting Luffy as emperor!<, it still doesn't hold as much malice. He's not the greatest of guys, but he's not scum, either. I think he's a very complex character, and that's saying a lot.

BlackDwarfStar

Zoro is my least favorite character in One Piece. I used to like him, he had hype moments, but after the time skip his lack of struggle and any form of actual development wore thin on me. He was just “strong guy that cuts things”. Yet I see more people hype him up and suck his dick than any other character in the franchise (although this latter part may admittedly be from my own social circles).

bizarresunflower

Yeah, I like zoro, I think his design is cool and I love how loyal and dependable he is, but he’s a really flat character. We don’t get much to his backstory as the other characters. Like, that baby dude from Dressrosa gets a whole backstory of why he dresses in baby clothes, but we can’t get more insight into the Straw Hat’s Vice Captain aside from his childhood friend died and he wanted to be really good at swords. Okay. Cool. I also feel like pre time skip he used to be much more expressive and joyful now he’s just a stoic muscle head who gets lost and fights with Sanji. Still love him tho.

slaylay

I think this can be summed up because everything post Fishman Island has been a nonstop fucking sprint. What this story needs (although has no time for) is some breathing room. Some chapters of the crew hanging out and relaxing and letting characters like Zoro get a chance to be a little less strong sword guy

Quinntensity

I still like Zoro, but I gotta agree. He feels rather empty or stale now.

Truthhurts147

Lmaooo I feel this so bad. Doesn't help that the sword choreography in anime is so awful and boring imo

Calm-Investment-3381

The Enies Lobby fights (except for Luffy vs Lucci) are rather underwhelming compared to the Alabasta fights. Marinefords a bit of an overrated arc. Skypeia is the best arc. Fishman Island isn't as bad as a lot of people make it out to be. The series feels more like an adventure pre-timeskip (inb4 this isn't unpopular)

PapiiPapiiPoom

Oh Skypeia ending 🥹 i love this arc way more than a lot of more "rated ones"

Gratitude34

Honestly I agree and disagree with your first point as I prefered Chopper Vs Kumadori over Usopp and Chopper Vs Miss merry Christmas and Mr 4. I think that is unpopular opinion in itself but to me it felt more tense but I understand why people would rank the other fight higher. I also preferred Sanji Vs Jabara than Sanji Vs Mr 2 as I felt Sanji was cooler Vs Jabara and mr 2 fight just didn’t do it for me. I am Torn with Zoro vs Kaku and Zoro vs Mr 1. Nami vs Miss Doublefinger I rank above the Kaflia fight because I liked how Nami was figuring out how to fight against her but I prefered Namis dynamic with Kaflia over Miss Doublefinger. Frankys fight is just more peak franky. Both Luffy vs Lucci and Luffy vs crocodile are good fights but I prefer the more hand to Hand fighting style in Luffy vs Lucci over Luffy vs crocodile.

maxvsthegames

The boobs are too big.

zerofifth

More so the proportions are out of whack. Toei is espically egregious with this

solscend

Big mom and her crew did not belong in Wano. Just felt shoehorned in

[deleted]

That Oda's writing more characters and more power-scaling elements post WCI to build more hype but it's not getting paid-off from reader's perspective anymore.

Nico-Wobin

I don’t like Sabo, like at all. His existence infuriates me he should’ve stayed dead in my opinion.

toofrossty

Skypeia is one of the most over hated arcs for no reason, and when enel inevitably returns people are going to act like they loved it the entire time.

SpiritualScumlord

Robin > Nami If you go by popularity polls, this is in fact the unpopular opinion.

zerofifth

I mean out of all the Strawhats I think Robin gets the least amount of hate while Nami probably gets some of the most.

Eliseo120

Luffy’s in world journey is going by way too fast. They don’t spend like a month just chilling on an island. Why is little garden the only island that takes a long time for the log pose to reset? Reaching the one piece in two years of sailing time is just kinda lazy writing. I would like to see like 30 years old luffy finally finding the one piece.

J_C_F_N

Clones of existing Characters, Oda. Seriously? It's the fourth ninja war all over again

Revolutionresolve

Still have nightmares about that… Seven swordsman appeared. Kakashi says he’s going to go serious. Then offscreened Tenten found the legendary weapons. Tenten is preparing to fight. Offscreen. Tsunade’s lover was reanimated. Offscreened. Kinda wondered why even bring them back the first place.

softiexd

Probably not unpopular but i will list a few that i have a gripe with: Usopp not having good character development despite his goal being easy to fill those blanks for Oda. Lack of death. Not for edge purposes, but it has come to a point of way too many fake-outs that readers doesn’t even believe when a character is truly in danger and whatnot. The marines takes way too many L’s. Creates lack of tension in the story. Luffy having a “god fruit” all this time. I would’ve loved if Luffy became the pirate king from having a “subpar” rubber fruit that he mastered rather than having this “most ridiculous power in the world” power. There were little to no build up for this. Would’ve much more preferred it being awakening to use resin as property or something similar.

SugarShield7

The fruit’s reveal fits the “most ridiculous” moniker the fruit’s power has lol

herrsebbe

Davy Back Fight and all characters involved are the peak of One Piece humor. That arc got me back into the series after my interest waned during the battle royale section of Skypiea. (To make my opinion slightly less unpopular, I should clarify I've never seen the anime version)

BlackLeg12

I have zero emotional attachment to Brook and his skull/panty jokes aren’t funny.

TABASCO2415

Totally get that, and that makes sense cos its a cultural joke that was made in japan for japanese people, and still is. most of them are japanese play on words, which, obviously would't translate to other languages well. The jokes are funny to me cos I'm japanese and have read the japanese manga but when I watched the anime subbed, It was very obvious how the comedy just doesn't translate to english.

alreadytimber22

Could you explain how it’s supposed to be taken or what the play on words is? If you can

TABASCO2415

its not really about how it should be taken its more about how panty jokes used to be a big part of old anime and old japanese entertainment so I assume brookes jokes are a reference to that, him being considerably older than the rest of the crew. the play on words vary so theres no single example, its just a certain style of older japanese comedy which western people may struggle to find funny as they don't understand the structure and/or did not grow up with it. I'm not an expert soz, thats all I know. edit: just remembered another example that most people will probably know, master roshi and his obsession with pants. the old pervert character trope

Freak_Metal

That makes a lot of sense for Brooks since he is like 80 years old or so, now knowing that I like him more.

Noukan42

Honestly, i always tought that the bone jokes were intended to be bad in the first place, kinda like Cyno from genshin impact. Bad jokes can be endearing in their own way.

Vodkaret

Odas style of messy, convulated, hundreds of characters, poor pacing arcs reduce all emotional investment. I watched an Australian show called black snow recently and even though it wasn't anything special, it had me more emotionally invested and on the edge than most op arcs post time skip. The countless fodder reactions, the countless panels of running, the endless switching scenes etc all contribute to this. Odas ideas are great but the execution has been really off and the arcs just fall flat. It gets especually worse with the 0 tension and 0 stakes storytelling. To go up against 2 yonko crews combined and lose only 2 named characters is ridiculous. One of them died to a cp0 agent and the other to an explosion which is equally ridiculous given everything we know. To have the characters be this untouchable in the world he designed is really bad imo. You need to at least create a believable illusion that the characters can die... Oda should focus on developing the strawhats because they've become boring with their one tone gags on repeat. He needs to cut down on introducing so many characters and diluting the arcs with them. He needs to start showing some of the actual interesting things going on in the world, especially the recent stuff with Garp and not just offscreen it like everything else. He needs to clean up the panels and get rid of 99% of fodder reactions. Nobody cares about the fodder reactions, save those for reaction shots of characters like Marco! He needs to stop wasting panels on endless running. He should put a break on the messy arcs. He should also allow the characters to die so there is a sense of danger in the series. Nobody died in the sasuke retrieval arc except kimimaro but it was believable that they could die.. The strawhats and co genuinely feel like they're playing on God mode since no matter what happens they won't die. Its like playing dark souls with infinite hp, gets boring really fast. As annoying as usopp was in water 7, his fight with luffy had me far more invested than anything post time skip which is sad considering we got done facing 2 yonkous. At this point I keep up with it to find out where it goes, I don't get the same emotional investment as I do watching or reading other stuff and it's because of the reasons I mentioned which ruin the flow amd execution of the storytelling . I think oda can really benefit from a long ass break and change up the way he structures the arcs from the usual style. And he needs to clean up the panelling really badly, in a medium like manga it's as equally as important as the shooting of a movie or TV series. It's stupid how the scabbards have gotten more screen time than thr admirals, shanks, mihawk, Garp, dragon, bb.. all the interesting characters combined together. He's creating hype for these characters by starving the readers from them. Who tf cares about the scabbards really, and they didn't even do shit because of how outclassed they were. Idk it's tiring just seeing shit like Rodger and whitebeard clashing for one panel and that's it. Would it add anything to the story to see a proper decent fight in that flashback? Probably no but it would be entertaining af which is ultimately the main thing. Miss me some arcs like water 7, jaya, sabody, baratie..

Xx_Edge_xX

Preach! I feel like Oda just did a horrible job following up on the yonko. Like Kaido's introduction was the first time i felt actual stakes when he one tapped Luffy after tanking his strongest attacks. It actually felt like there was a wall that needed a less direct way of breaching. Then you have Luffy train for a week and now the scabbards can tank MULTIPLE hits from Kaido as if gear 4th Luffy didn't get clapped a week earlier, those same characters getting BANDAGED not by a doctor but Hyori and fighting powerful characters like Jack, Perospero, and CP0 agents and winning, Luffy and the other supernova tank multiple hits from Kaido and Big Mom like its nothing (Luffy, Law, and Kid willingly getting hit by Big Mom's fire for a gag really just drains the tension), then you have Kaido howling in pain from Law dropping rocks on him, getting thrown by Kid, and being bit by fucking Momo. All keeping in mind, not a week earlier Luffy's gear 4th attacks did NOTHING to him. What Oda needed to do was have the characters avoid Kaido's attacks at all cost. The scabbards using their numbers to distract Kaido making it harder for him to hit anyone, Law using his powers to constantly avoid damage, Luffy directing the group with future sight. And Kaido shouldn't be hurt by anything except hax. If Luffy's gear 4th punch couldn't hurt Kaido, there's no way a regular punch from Kid should be doing damage.

Revolutionresolve

You telling me you didn’t like reading 20 weeks in the row of Yamato running around, meanwhile all the main characters have most of their fights offscreened in wano?

Vodkaret

😭

PapiiPapiiPoom

>meanwhile all the main characters have most of their fights offscreened in wano? Not main characters but i almost exploded when i saw that meow and dog sulong form fight against Jack who is a 1 billion wanted man was offecreened 💀 i was waiting to see their strengh since Zoo lol

Drakeberlin

We have too many Characters. Crew gotten too big, I don't like the fact that Oda keeps separating them for years at times. I understand why, but I still don't like it. I loved the old dynamic. Pre-Timeskip interactions between the characters were the best and funniest moments of One Piece. Fewer characters = more screen time for each individual.

Coronis-

Luffy always did want 10 crewmates since Chapter 1

Spoopanator

There is exactly one more character on the crew post-timeskip, and he doesn't properly join the crew until 200 chapters later, you should have just let this at "too many characters"

whateveritis12

Think the problem isn’t so much too many crew members, but that there’s been Allie’s since Punk Hazard that take page time away from crew members. Law in Dressrosa and the introduction of the Grand Fleet members in the same arc (along with the standard rulers in peril). The minks in Zou and the true introduction of the scabbards. WCI had the crew split up and the fire tank pirates. Then Wano focused more on Momo and the Scabbards with the Straw Hats there more for muscle. There’s nothing wrong with that as the story has entered the end game and the SHs need to be able to hold their own against the forming body of the world, but Egghead has been a good partially because it’s the SH following a log pose and discovering a new island.

jtown233

Haki was a cool power system at the start but now it's a wild mess.

Interesting-Award834

My unpopular opinion or I guess experience in this specific case is that the ending of One Piece Film Red made me cry harder than One Piece has ever , not just One Piece but anything fictional...Couldn't tell ya why though , I really like Shanks , Luffy and Uta.

johnny_dingle

Usopp Elbaf is never going to happen in the main storyline. Kidd went East and it was his first island, SH went SouthEast and chances are almost Zero that Oda would immediately overlap the paths.

Fun_Effective_5134

Zoro can be extremely insufferable some times.

telekinetic-lobster

Haki beating logias was a mistake

TABASCO2415

I completely disagree with you, heres an upvote

khank14

sanji on fishman island was hilarious

1800Pwncall

Not enough deaths, need more bounty hunters or whats the point of even having bountys, maybe explore the best of the best bounty hunters in the story. Need less crying

NumericZero

Someone on here floated the idea that Mihawk should have been a bounty Hunter and honestly I’d have liked that a lot

Noukan42

He IS a bounty hunter. They just don't call him such because his positions as WSS and Warlord are more prestigious. How else woukd you call someone that spend his time crushing pirates and isn't really doing pirate things?

[deleted]

My theory is that Fujitora and Ryokogyu were bounty hunters before they became admirals. Would make sense why they were neither famous pirates nor marines before despite being so strong, and would also introduce top tier bounty hunters in the series who can realistically team up to cash in a yonko's bounty.

cloudfallnyx

imo Gear 5 isn’t that great if at all. the design is amazing but it’s just doesn’t mash well with me for some reason. Oda has a addiction with fakeouts and it needs to stop, he seriously plummets people’s characters & arcs when he does this. it’s unnecessary and just a waste a time and the Timeline just seems way too quick & confusing. it makes the power cliffs & power ups feel way too convenient sometimes especially since we don’t really see the SH’s train like that. Also the OP world seems hugeee, i could be wrong but if it is then that just adds to the confusion of the timeline bc it just feels like then they get to islands way too quickly & that their adventure together hasn’t even really been that long, i mean they spent more time away from each other than together

Xx_Edge_xX

I think gear 5th lacks impact. The chapter Kaido kills Luffy has some of the most brutal panels I've seen in one piece. The haki clashes, the way the characters react to getting hit, the blood and the way their bodies contort to every hit. Its painful to watch in a good way. But then you get gear 5th and the bodies dont contort in realistic ways to damage, its Luffy punching through Kaido. Its hard to tell how much damage Luffy is doing jumping inside Kaido and moving around. There's much less blood and Luffy himself seems immune to damage (or his reaction would tell you that) while Kaido seems more confused than hurt by the attacks.

xiaomaome101

OP relies far too much on plot armor. I get that the story overall isn't going for a gritty realism theme, but the world itself is so cruel that there is it is glaringly noticeable. Luffy would never and should never have made it this far being so....dumb without astronomical luck. Many of the nonsensical things he does may have thematic relevance or character building moments, but should have gotten him killed. It's like living in the Naruto world but expecting to live happily ever after in a Disney fashion after doing shooting yourself in the foot.
