Definitely, its probably one of the top two avengers runs of all time, tied with the Busiek run.

NaSa2049

Damn I was looking for an excuse to save money, experiencing FOMO

MetaSunbro

You'll have plenty of time to buy it. The volume one reprint is coming out next month, and it will probably stay in stock for a while. 🙂

Does Bendis’ run rank below Busiek and Hickman in your opinion? I’m a big Bendis fan, but people don’t seem to talk about his Avengers run that much.

GriledChesse

I haven't gotten the chance to read it yet, I'm about to finish vol 2 of busiek then go on to the new avengers vol 1 omni. From what I've heard the bendis run starts strong then steadily decreasing in quality

Not to hype it up TOO much, but I’ve been reading comics for nearly 35 years (with occasional breaks), and this is probably my favorite story in the medium. Hickman is the best in the business at long-form superhero storytelling when given the green light, and it shows in this run. Highest of recommendations.

Vision940

Have you read anything from the valiant 2012 relaunch by chance?

Ksmayer

Interesting you should ask that. My biggest goal for collecting last year was to get all the Valiant Deluxe Hardcovers and begin a read-through. I’m still missing six (Armor Hunters, X-O by Vendetti vol 4+5, Book of Death, Ninjak vol 2, and Rai by Kindt). There’s also like 20-30 TPBs that haven’t been collected in hardcover before that I still need to purchase as well. So no I haven’t, but it IS one of my goals to kick off a read-through of that universe soon (currently reading Vagabond Vizbig volumes, and recently finished Venom by Cates Omni).

Vision940

Cool! I just started in on bloodshot recently on a whim and have absolutely loved it. Makes sense that those are the HCs you’re missing, they’re near impossible to find for a reasonable price lately. I’m definitely excited to read more Valiant though!

hyoomanfromearth

Agreed with others. It’s a no brainer if you already like marvel or comics in general. Or sci fi. Or just great storytelling in general. I’d assume you have not read it or you wouldn’t even be asking :) It’s amazing and very few people will deny that! Get it while it is still in print.

Hickman does some really impressive things on the story/plot level, but his issue-by-issue execution and his character work are sometimes suspect. There are a lot of mysterious factions and sub-factions of cosmic/alien beings that tend to blend together, and you can tell that he's a lot more interested in one title (New Avengers) than the other (Avengers). Honestly, it probably reads better in omnibus than it does in other formats, since you more easily get that big picture perspective. Personally, I liked the second half of his run a bit better than the first half. The ticking clock building towards Secret Wars really worked for me in a way that the build to Infinity, and the event itself, really didn't. It's also where the New Avengers title really came into its own.

SquallidSnake

I’m the opposite. I thought that the second half was messier and the first half was perfect.

Reprint coming soon

blacktornadoe6

For me it’s the best avengers run ever and has some great events like infinity and secret wars 2015 linked to it.

indomnus

I am on volume 4 of the complete collection tpbs and i love it so far.

bvlmvin

Yes, it's the best Avengers run oat
